Galaxy Brain - To Catch Lightning in a Bottle

Have you read To Catch Lightning in a Bottle? No???? WHAT ON EARTH ARE YOU STILL DOING HERE GO GO GO GO GO!!!!!

To Catch Lightning in a Bottle by @storm-leviosa-fanfics my beloved <3. It is a truly beautiful fic that is incredibly heartfelt and incredibly well written. It's got figurative language that will make an English Teacher cry. It's got Reynie, caught in a rough spot but so well loved. It's got Miss Perumal being Such A Good Mom. It's so thoughtful, in every word, about trauma and coping mechanisms and how us humans tend to hold these things in the palms of our hands. This fic deserves endless amounts of praise. I feel lucky to have read it!

TMBS COMMENT CHALLENGE: WEEK 1

I love participating in this challenge! I read some wonderful fics, and I meant every single comment on them!

Dec 1: Something Old

Fic 1: Made For Growing by @mashpotatoequeen

Kicking it off with a traditional feel-good fic. I love how it portrays how Constance feels about Rhonda's new boyfriend, and how she's worried that it means Rhonda will leave her behind, and how Mr. Benedict calms those worries in the traditional Mr. Benedict way. It's so soft and fluffy, and I loved it all.

Dec 2: Something New

Fic 2: Try to Be by 2001aso

A fic still in progress, but wow. Sam seems like an amazing character, and although I'm not entirely sure the author has a Tumblr, I want to give them a lot of kudos. Sam'll put a bunch of skills on the table with the other kids, and I love it for her.

Day 3: Something Blue

Fic 3: Hurt/Comfort Snippets (Chapter 3) by @mvshortcut

The prompt "Why haven't you been eating?" with Rhonda and Milligan? *chef's kiss* MILLIGAN IS DAD TO EVERYONE, AND RHONDA IS JUST SO WORRIED ABOUT HER SISTER AND OTHER DAD! NOT TO MENTION THE MENTIONS OF CONSTANCE GETTING INTO THE CANDY JAR AND DINO NUGGIES! Also, I never heard the headcanon of Rhonda being vegetarian, but I love it!

Day 4: Remarkable Reynie Muldoon

Fic 4: Reynie Blender Time Heeheehoohoo by @sophieswundergarten

I was actually there when the fic got published, but I just HAD to leave another comment on the fic. I enjoy how Dr. Galvani isn't overly mean or sadistic, but he believes these men over the boy they kidnapped. He isn't inherently evil, but he is one of those adults who can be bribed to do just about any unethical thing. I ate these floorboards right up, and had to return for seconds!

Day 5: Treasure Trove

Fic 5: Time and A Half by @mvshortcut

Ah yes, the best feel-good fic. What do you mean it's not canon? No, this actually happened, and you can't convince me otherwise! I love how it built upon the world and gave some context to the discussions between Milligan and the Ten Men! I have returned for the other structural supports over and over, and I love it!

Day 6: Diamond in The Rough

Fic 6: I'm Not Ready Yet by Kitkatz123

If you like Kaynie, you will like this fic. It's short and sweet, and leaves the amazing message of "It's not goodbye, not forever at least."

Day 7: Clever Constance Contraire

Fic 7: Double Edged Sword by Molly_Hats

*singing* Whump~ Whump, whump whump whump whump whump whuuuuuump!

A very good whump fic! Constance sacrificing herself to save Mr. Benedict, when she's usually so stubborn! It really shows how much she loves her dad! And OUGH, when Mr. B keeps repeating that he's fine! That! Is! Heartwrenching! Read it!

December Comment Challenge Day 6 - Diamond in the Rough

Listen, after the dance scene, any fic that can make me so genuinely scared of Show Curtain deserves a medal. The second chapter is such an interesting peek into his character. In fact I am actively hunting Gert for sport as I type this, especially for the author's note.

Villain Appreciation - kate and her bucket sitting in a tree - S-P-Y-I-N-G

@bi-demon-ium i am far too week a person to survive this absolute fantastic beast of a crack fic. It's hilarious. It's beyond hilarious. It trancends sheer ridiculous to a fantastic plane of humour. The dialogue is so well done, witty and back and forth and adding perfectly to the chaos. Fantastic. Curtain being beyond lost makes me cackle like nothing else. Fantastic! The way the Benedict Bros spent .5 seconds together and fall back into the same bickering habits of childhood. FANTASTIC.

Look at them!!! LOOK AT THEM!!! MY KIDDOS MY BEANS MY SMOL AND PRECIOUS LOVELIES!!! I love love LOVE love how you captured their unique personalities in a single moment. I love how much movement is in this, from Kate's hair to Reynie's little glance over his shoulder. We are so lucky to have this art, @catter-bug! Thank you for sharing it with us <3

Also, the way you draw shoes in particular is fantastic. They're all perfect from the top of their heads to the tip of their toes!

Comment Spree - S.O.S.

@nobodysdaydreams it's finally happening. I'm finally reading S.O.S. and although I do not have full context for the events going on as someone who predominantly focuses on the books, I am fully engaged and locked in. WOW is this a really cool fic with excellent backstory and world building!!!! The dialogue is so sharp and the suspense builds so naturally. The heart wrenching moments are heart wrenching and the funny moments make me grin like crazy. I can't wait to keep reading!!!

I chose two fics for today! "Sunday Tea" is such a wonderful look into Reynie's adult life and very cathartic to read. As much as I adore "Safety is a Fading Memory," Sophie is the Reynie Muldoon Whump writer to me, so you can pick any one of her fics and it will be incredible.

@deeskip i hope that you know every time i see this I release a truly profound and ugly snorting laughter. It's absolutely perfect in every way. The facial expressions, Curtain's over the top rage and word bubble dripping with his detestment. Mr. Benedict, suddenly very much the boy he was in The Extraordinary Education, dishing absolute sass like a champ. His face. His faaaaceee. It's so very perfect and this art cheers me immensely. Thank you!

Also, the time you took into the plaid is very impressive to me. All in all 10/10 thank you for your service!!!

We've Had One Breakfast Yes - Sparks

Every once in a while I get a hankering for a good whump fic and @sophieswundergarten's fic Sparks always hits the spot. It's got everything! Electrocution! Concerned grown ups! Reynie being ridiculously intelligent and caring about his friends a ridiculous amount while his self sacrificial tendencies act in full force!!! Electrocution!! What's not to love?

December Comment Challenge Day 3 - Something Blue

On the third day of this challenge, which is definitely today and not yesterday, esteemed MBS fandom creator Mashpotatoequeen murdered me in cold blood. SAD!

This is my message from beyond the grave that you should all read this fic too. You totally won't be destroyed as well. (I was, in fact, resurrected by the end of this fic as well as the author's note, so I'm sure we can all forgive Mashpotatoequeen for murdering me.)

December Comment Challenge Day 1 - Something Old

Dust Bunnies and Paper Scraps by Thalia Castellan

I interpreted the prompt to the extreme and found the oldest MBS fic I could on fanfiction.net. If you're used to AO3, I promise this fic is worth venturing to ff.net for. It's short and sweet, made me emotional about Constance's newfound family, and depicts her as the toddler she is at heart, even if she is a little genius. Go read it!

Ooooooh but I love this. I LOVE this. I remember when so much of the awesome fanart we got were little headshots like this, a small inspiration taken from the book art. It's always incredibly fun seeing people's own take on it, though, and your take is positively lovely.

My boy Reynie! Look at him!!! Look at his little sweater vest!!! Look at how kind his smile is, oh my goodness. I don't know how artists capture emotions with lines but every time it make me feel The Awe. I love how each of the kids has a little colour associated with them, and I LOVE how Reynie is green!! You chose so well. It's cool how the green colour isn't just his vest and the little clover decorations, but rather a part of his outline too!!! (And with the other kids as well, Reynie's just where I first noticed.)

Sticky is ADORABLE here. I love his shy smile and his big ol' glasses. His eyes are even a little bigger than the others because of the lenses! That's fantastic detail I'm so impressed! His outfit is also perfect and very much a Sticky look, which makes me grin. The little worry drops as his... symbol(?) is so fitting. I want to hug him. I want to hug The Boi.

Constance's little grumpy face is so charming, in the way that little grumpy kids are endlessly charming to me. They've got big personalities and Opinions and this is absolutely fantastic! Of course she's wearing her raincoat, but I like the little red clip in her hair too. Another perfect sign too with the red wrinkles!! She is grumpy! It's cool how cartoons and anime and comics have given us these codes to let us look at little lines and know exactly what they represent!

Kate! Look at her big grin and her little winky face! She's got such personality and you've captured it beautifully here. It's really cool how you managed to capture the difference between Kate and Constance's hair, one being whispy white/blonde and one golden! Sometimes it's a toss up with what colour Kate is - her red bucket is so iconic!- but I totally agree that she's a yellow. She's bright and cheery and excitable 95% of the time!

Anyways, these are so lovely @lotsofsq! I'd love to hear about your process or why yous specifically added any of those little details like the symbols if you have the time and energy and will, but not worries! I'm just happy I got to enjoy them. Thank you for sharing!

This was such an interesting peek into Constance's thoughts during Season 2! It's a neat balance of horror and humor and heartbreak. Her voice is really distinct in the narration here - it felt like it was pulled directly from the show!
