oh my gosh! thank you!! i really love character interactions and relationship dynamics, so i wanted to depict two girls who seemed like opposites - one cool and laid-back, the other soft and sweet. after a while they started to take on a life of their own, and i thought it'd be wonderful if their story could evoke the feeling of a shoujo romance!

i had a lot of things on my mind when i wrote the script... friendship, intimacy, communication... communication can be so hard! sometimes it's harder with someone you're close to because their opinion is so important to you. and what happens when you've got a character who's non-confrontational and has low self-esteem + someone who prefers actions over words, and would rather burn bridges than admit to feeling vulnerable? how would they get past that? i wanted to write their flaws as believable, and how their life experiences have shaped the way they think about themselves / the way they respond to personal conflict... but also how they learn from each other and grow ❤️ tysm for the question!!

thank you both so much!!!! <3 a sequel is actually one of the ideas i pitched for my second book! my editor cautioned against it in case IYHM didn't perform well, so i ended up going in a different direction - but my fingers are crossed for future opportunities 😤 realistically, it will probably depend on sales... but for the record, i'd want to do one regardless of the numbers...

i have one more book coming out, which i'm working on right now! the timeline is a bit up in the air atm but i'll try to keep everyone posted. making a book is so slow but i'm so grateful to you all for waiting 🥺💛

Why thank you! I’m glad you guys are still invested or are in the process of investing yourselves into this project of mine! I hope you don’t mind me lumping some info onto here because it has been a while since I opened my inbox, haha:

There are three-or-so parts to Just Deserts.

A big reason as to why I’m seemingly reluctant to answer Borderline-related questions is simply because Borderline is in Part Three.

Yes, it’s definitely taking a lot of restraint for me to not just ditch working on the first two parts for Borderline, but I’d love for Borderline to have a good build up and lend ENA some fun along the way. That isn’t to mention the hell that is architectural/environmental design that I’m absolutely not excited for!

So, when you ask me what does Borderline look like… I ask myself that too!

Forgive the crudeness, but if you really need it in your mind’s eye, Borderline itself is a remote, hexagonal-walled, high surveillance country of six states or Bonds that parodies the American Pentagon. It’s settled in a distant desert far East of the world— hence Just Deserts. In terms of art direction, Borderline draws strongly from Brutalism, Speculative, and Art Deco design.

How does Just Deserts go then?

Just Deserts precedes ENA’s ultimate encounter with the Boss. It starts sometime after Lonely Door with Froggy renting a pedal boat originally intended for the inconspicuous isle North of the Hub’s docks.

Although, just as he was going to bear ENA the news, Froggy notices the eye in the sky’s sudden attentiveness. Visitors to the Hub give comment, discussing their paranoia and the unfortunate circumstances they found themselves in due to being caught by its gaze.

Froggy suspects that the eye, the Sun, is creeping on them, or rather that the Boss is creeping on them through the Sun. Unwilling to risk their pursuit, the pair agrees to pedal— well, more like agree to have ENA pedal— for the Sun.

Hours— or really minutes— into the sail, ENA realizes that the ocean is bloody massive and very much alive. She has zero means of navigation other than the Sun itself, which ends up bringing her to three distinct locations: Bizaar, Sitasar, and Borderline. Each country has its own Genie and conflict for ENA to shoulder as her own as usual, but hey! The client’s always right, and the payoff’ll be huge!

Status Update.

I’m working on Part One, which features Bizaar (pronounced: BY-ZAAR) as you saw up top. I can best describe it to be an off-shore trade resort situated at the supposed center of the world. The exotic emporium prides itself for its cardiomarine merchandise and fittingly exotic founder— a real piece of work that guy is.

I’d consider it a fun place! Although, ENA might swing between loving or hating it since she’d be surrounded by fellow con-artists successful, affluent, and admirable business folk.

As I’ve hinted before, Borderline is the only place with other ENAs, so both Bizaar and Sitasar will feature plenty of non-ENA-kin characters.

Admittedly, it is getting harder to work without a framework or template such as the ENA species, but! I long and crave for variation, and you all likely do too! Just Deserts’ll be no fun if they’re all ENAs, and I need my break from polygons once in a while, so don’t be so jarred if you see some new faces or forms some time soon.

Also, heeey, we’re branding! Look at that. Oh— that’s another thing actually— there was a bit of a slow down with the graphics cause I need to buy font licenses. Why buy it if I’m doing personal use? Well, what if YOU wanted to commission something from me? I wouldn’t want to disrespect type artists and rob you of my type design!

Rain wants to go swimming in the lake at the first sign of spring. Dew doesn't want to freeze. No warnings, 650 words.

“Come swimming with me,” Rain says, a wild look in his eyes, door flung open.

Dew, glasses perched on the narrow bridge of his nose, eyes wide and startled behind them, bursts out laughing. He’s still in bed for once, even though the sun is high in the sky. Comfortable and warm and there’s no way he’s getting in the water right now. “Rain, froggy, there is still snow on the ground. I’m not going swimming with you.”

“Come on, Dew,” Rain says, sliding to his knees at the side of Dew’s bed. His long hands clasp, and if Dew wanted to be particularly sacrilegious, he’d think Rain looks like a little boy saying his prayers before bed. “Please. Don’t wanna go alone.”

“You don’t want to or you can’t?” Dew asks, uncharacteristically softly. He sets his glasses aside on the nightstand closest to him, stretching until his shoulder pops loudly and he groans with soft relief.

“Don’t want to,” Rain shrugs. “And you like to swim so let’s goooooo.” The water ghoul grabs one of his hands, just barely pulling. Dew doesn’t have to put in much effort to resist.

“I don’t want to freeze, pearl,” Dew says, smoothing a spindly thumb over the back of Rain’s hand, even as the water ghoul pulls.

“The ice’s melted. You won’t freeze,” he pouts. Dew blinks.

“Oh, Rain, froggy. It’s your first spring Up Top,” he breathes. Every piece falling into place, the puzzle completed and on display.

“And what about it? The ice is gone now, we can swim. And not just in the bathhouses. We can swim for real,” Rain presses, eyes wide and earnest.

“Even when it’s warm enough for the ice to melt, the water doesn’t warm for a long while,” Dew whispers. “My first spring, I spent three days in the infirmary because I got too cold and they couldn’t warm me up, even with Ifrit laying on top of me like the world’s densest weighted blanket. I don’t want you to think you can regulate your temperature and wind up like me.”

Rain huffs. Flops onto Dew’s lap like a particularly displeased cat, gangly limbs stretched out in every direction and baring his belly where his shirt rides up. Dew can’t help himself but place a warm palm on the teal skin that’s revealed. “Can’t be that bad, I was from the Deepwater.”

Dew hems and haws, rubbing over Rain’s stomach, feeling the faintest fuzz of his body hair. “I know the waters there are cold, but these are near freezing, and the Deepwater is saltwater, it’s different.”

“Aww,” Rain whines, flicking his finned tail back and forth. “Dewey, please. I can handle it.”

Dew sighs, bending at the middle to kiss between Rain’s coral horns. “If you say so, froggy. But I’m not able to. I promise I will come swimming with you when the water properly warms up. But I have to say no to right now. You go if you’re confident.”

Rain sighs, rolling onto his side to nuzzle Dew’s skinny thigh. “Fine. Alright. I guess. I’m gonna come back if it’s too cold,” Rain promises, reaching up to cup the sharp cheekbones. “Besides, I got my space heater if I freeze.” Rain bats his eyelashes, and Dew smacks his shoulder.

“What did I just say about Ifrit- Oh, suit yourself, pearl. I will resign myself to be your body heat regulator, you lizard.”

Rain lifts his chin and smiles smugly, a purr kicking up and making his bright teal gills flutter. “Thank you, Dewey,” he croons. “Can’t wait to come back here and cuddle.” He stands with a groan, untangling his limbs and getting his feet under him.

Dew sighs, drawing on his elemental magic, body heat increasing and warming the covers. “Yeah, go freeze. I’ll make it all better.”

Rain grins and darts out the door, and Dew resigns himself to thawing duty.

Spring is my favorite season, because that's when nature awakens and the weather gets nicer and warmer. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to do a drawing related to spring earlier, since I was working on other topics and was busy, but it makes no sense for me to start summer before I do spring, and I did two drawings related to spring. More specifically, related to my version of the Quack Pack team (Quack Pack AU).

Spring in the northern hemisphere usually begins between March 20 and March 22 and lasts until June 21 when summer begins, while in the southern hemisphere it is autumn. Then winter ends and spring awakens in the form of flowering of many flowers and plants, and the trees themselves become beautiful with the emergence of buds and after the flowers bloom. All this then leads to the trees shedding their leaves, which happens later. Unfortunately, lately spring does not last long because either a cold wave that lasts for several weeks or a heat wave comes, which enters early summer, and all those flowers that bloom disappear at a high speed. There are also cases when it rains a lot, as in autumn. In any case, the benefit of this is that there are also new crops from the fields as well as from the orchards, as the fruits are picked from the trees, but only in the later period during the summer. Bees take a lot of pollen from the flowers, which they then use to make honey. So spring is an extremely important season, and without it we wouldn't have the other seasons. In honor of it, even though it's over, I drew two drawings of teenagers and kids ducks playing in nature and hanging out again with their animals that they met during the fall. Yes, this is like a redraw from my earlier drawings that I drew in the fall, and you can find more about it here: Quack Pack Autumn (Fall) - Huey, Dewey and Louie plus Phooey Duck with their family and friends in the forest with woodland animals and pets

The only difference is that unlike autumn when the leaves fall from the trees and the days are shorter, in spring everything blooms and nature awakens, as well as the days are getting longer. So in these drawings, unlike the leaves, you can see the flowers that usually appear in spring. Mostly tulips and violets, as well as chamomiles and numerous forest flowers that appear during spring, as well as the flowers from the trees themselves that bloom. The boys and girls, having found their beloved animals again (it doesn’t matter if it’s North America or Europe, although the biodiversity on the two continents is completely different) who are actually very peaceful and seek attention for play. And those animals are in keeping with the personalities of these teenage ducks who hug them. And they wear clothes appropriate for spring. Yes, I drew them in the Quack Pack version, and I think it certainly suits them, especially because of their personalities (the same goes for preteens and regular younger children from the regular versions), especially Louie and Webby who love animals and care for them. Ducktales 1987 and the Quack Pack episode “Shrunken Heroes” prove my point. Huey got a fox, Dewey a beaver, Phooey a skunk, April a raccoon, May a bear, June a woodpecker, Webby a fawn and her pet rabbit Swettie, and Louie Duck and Gosalyn Mallard got both male and female rabbits and squirrels. Dugan Duck is with his toad Froggy. All happy together in the forest. Yes, I have of course added pets like Webby's pet rabbit named Sweetie, May's Knuckles the Iguana and Dugan's pet frog named Froggy. For those who don't know, Knuckles the Iguana is actually Daisy's pet from Quack Pack. To not repeat myself again, this time I didn't add the Easter eggs that you can recognize in the picture, unlike my drawing related to autumn, because those animals are more like my version with which they are related and friendly with our heroes, but you can see above them that there is a loving couple of sparrows as well as the bee itself and around the flowers and leaves that are falling in the background. I hope you like this!

I hope you like these drawings and these ideas and feel free to like and reblog this and feel free to say what you all like and what you don’t like. Just don’t use these same ideas and these designs of these characters and animals without mentioning me. Thank you! It is also my wish and intention to dedicate this to my favorite season that has long passed, but not to remain forgotten until a new cycle comes when spring comes again after winter. Face # 7: Baby Frog ruminates

To recap once more, this year (2024) I have been trying to draw faces, all year long. Being an outsider artist, I never had anyone teach me how to do it. So once again, I will just teach myself by doing it over and over in different variations. Recently I went out on a few dates with this single mom, her name is Britt. No spark, no problem, we kind of became friends instead. I’ve been over to her place a few times and met her infant boy. I won’t give you the boy’s name, but I call him Baby Frog because he’s got a bit of a froggy face going on. He’s like all other babies. He loves to laugh, and he gets fussy sometimes, but he also makes this stone-cold face when I’m talking to his mom, like I owe him money, or like he knows something about my mother.

Out of any of the drawings I’ve done for this series, this one was by far the easiest. Babies have these fat, lumpy faces that basically have no definition. This kid has eyes that are deep brown, and they're HUGE, so when he’s just kind of passive and staring at something he kinda looks like he’s a possessed stone golem. Britt puts him in funny hats that make his head look like a big, chubby mushroom stalk. He drools uncontrollably all the time. When I’m over at Britt’s place I sometimes wish I could get away with an infant’s social behavior and fashions. I often wonder if the Baby Frog is in deep thought when he just stares away like he does, and I wonder if he’ll have the same steely glance as an adult, because it’s somewhat intimidating even at his age. I’ve come to like Baby Frog a lot, and he has enjoyed my company as well. I’m around few babies these days, and despite their awkward mannerisms, I still like them better than adults. Infants are just honest. Drawing faces has been generally difficult, next time I’ll try an adult face at a dynamic angle. I’ve got to keep challenging myself, and I’m still not VERY good at this. Ahhhh, finally finished my first drawing of the year!! About time!!

Anyway, new year, new OC? Apparently? This started as what was supposed to be a silly art trade with @halfblood-ghost but it might be leading to more of a collaborative thing where we make animal witch OCs xD Honestly I'm SO excited about this, I'm having so much fun with this ❤️

So yeah! Welcome froggie girl! She does potions and water-based magic, and she's just the first of them witchy characters to be introduced. We'll be introducing other two characters as well at some point. Expect shenanigans and queerness between the three of them 👀

Getting back into my groove of making art in spastic burst until I burn out :) Land of Monsters and Frogs

In the Land of Monsters and Frogs, our fair denizen Echidna (the Mother of Monsters) is once again threatened with the extermination of our dear froggy friends. These things have piss poor battle sense and barely any way to fight off whatever hellions get prototyped in. So she decides to give them adaptations by mutating them. What can go wrong? :) Everything. The poor things' genes are unstable causing constant vicious and monstrous mutations that make them horrendously dangerous. Wings, and claws, and poison scales, oh my! The Hero of Space here must not only survive this Skaia forsaken hellscape but also ignite the Forge which will disperse ash and steam causing a global rain. Echidna, knowing that the frogs would be safe once the Forge is ignited, pre-placed the cure for the constant mutations inside the Forge in the form of a vapor that will be transported with the rain and steam. The monsters will lose their dangerous traits and slowly revert back to normal frogs in a few generations (give or take) and in the meantime the Hero of Space must breed the Genesis Frog with more caution for these rogue genes. Creator Note: Obviously I created this one for myself given the lengthy blurb. LoMaF is much more suited to me (and who knows maybe you too dear reader) and I enjoy it's concept much more. Plus I got to draw some funky creatures to decorate with, and there's an actual volcano this time. -[BC]

Chapter 1 - Call and Lodging - Part 1

My Xtransciever should buzz with a call from my contact any second now.

I’d touched down by Mountain Town only moments ago. The name seemed seriously uninspired, but, in a way, that sort of thing is what makes a place noteworthy to begin with. I should know.

It was half past seven in the morning, and the inexplicably turquoise grass beneath my feet crunched with the shattering of frost as I dropped down from atop my Jigglypuff, Ririri.

Mountain Town is a precinct within the Jaf’va region, a politically peculiar land situated between Kalos and Unova. I’d never had a good excuse to find myself in the area, so, when I was contacted about a hit in Jaf’va, I couldn’t control my curiosity. I accepted the job more than a little hastily, so much so to the extent that I don’t actually know what it is that I’m to do here myself, just that I am.

Here, that is.

What I do know is that I was told to arrive at these exact coordinates, at this exact time, and to keep a low profile. I’d descended through the air on Ririri into a meadow a little ways south of Mountain Town as per the instructions. In the distance, I could see a great barrier wall that ran along the border of the town in its entirety. The southernmost gate faced me, and the pointed watch towers on either side of it were both empty; a fact that isn’t to be taken as a coincidence. My contact is well-informed, that’s for sure.

As if on queue, my Xtransciever received a call. Tachoda was the name displayed on the other end. I waited a moment as I pondered on what was inevitably a code name, trying to see if I could draw a connection of some sort from it, but hadn’t a lick of luck in my attempt at all. Finally, I answered the call.

A video feed flickered on from the other end and I came face to face with Tachoda through the screen of my Xtransciever. So, really, we weren’t face-to-face at all. I was certainly seeing him, though. He had strawberry-blond hair and the type of face that was froggy but attractive enough at the same time. He wore a gray suit and an obnoxiously lime green tie. His hair was swooped to one side.

“Green,” he said.

Which is my name, by the way.

My eyes were drawn to the upper right-hand side of the screen where a smaller window displayed the video that my own Xtransciever was sending out. I looked good today, but that was most days. I had auburn hair down to my mid-back and fluffy bangs that did a fantastic job of framing my face.

Every masterpiece needs a good frame. Ask any gallery director.

I wore a chic black mini dress, white gloves, and a totally cute pair of boots I picked up in Kalos on the flight here.

The dress was a similar one to another I had when I was much younger. I figured it’d fit the mood. I hadn’t done something like this in a while, after all.

Speaking of which, moods are important to set. Especially with men that you want something out of. It’s all about the way you approach a situation, sometimes you don’t even necessarily need to lie!

Although you really should anyways.

Furthermore, uniformly, there needn’t be any carry-through on your end either. Just the prospect of an opportunity in a man’s head is enough to throw him off balance.

They’re greedy and bullheaded like that. How simple!

“Tach,” I replied, batting my eyelashes alongside the other works one might expect. Oooo, I’m pretty good, huh-?

“Tachoda,” he responded sternly, “It’s Tach-oda. Let’s not get too comfortable, Green.” He stifled a laugh as I brooded on what had just transpired. “Green,” he continued, “you’re really not a very creative thinker, huh? What a code name!” His enunciation of the ‘o’ in ‘code’ ran a little high and upset me further.

Grr..!

He’s just trashing my name at this point!

His face suddenly snapped back to a straightly serious expression and he immediately began to proceed with the details of the mission at hand. “Take note of these things. Jaf’va is a region that is unique in its external openness but internal isolation. It’s easy to enter what is technically ‘Jaf’va’, but finding yourself anywhere but in the wilderness between the civilization within is more complicated.”

“You gonna quiz me on this or-?”

“The land within Jaf’va isn’t so much subdivided as it is claimed,” he continued without missing a beat, “The Daimyos of Jaf’va are a group of royally recognized landholders scattered throughout the region. For whatever reason, the culture around here developed such that taking more land is seen as lowbrow and deplorable, where it’s really at for these people is control and fortification. As such, the Daimyo aren’t interested in conquest, only the defense of their land. In other words, they are fiercely territorial.”

“So I gotta steal something from this Mountain Town Daimyo guy?”

“On the contraire, Mountain Town stands as an exception to the established rule I’ve explained thus far. If you’ll allow me to continue; as a result of the Daimyo culture in Jaf’va, there tend to be massive spans of what we’ll call unclaimed land. The Daimyo are so strict with who gets in or out of their respective claims that it wouldn’t be a stretch to label the people of Jaf’va as either claimed or unclaimed as well. This is where Mountain Town comes into play as an anomaly. Mountain Town is the result of unclaimed residents emulating Daimyo settlement culture inside the unclaimed land.”

“Okay..? And my target? Or, is there a target?” I asked, “What am I doing here?”

“We have a… point of interest within Mountain Town. That’s all you need for now. I’ll send you the documents that your entry sponsor provided. Present them to the guards once you reach the gate and they’ll let you in. Good luck, and enjoy your stay.”

“My what? My huh? Hey, quit it with the vagueness, Mister I’m-so-mysterious! I already know enough guys like that!”

“I trust you’ll work it out.”

“I trust I’ll work my foot-!”

“Green, one more thing.”

“Yeah, what is it!?”

“Stay out of trouble.” He smiled and ended the call.

Before my surgery i wanted to challenge myself to draw as many of the mha students in my style as I could. and then i drew tsu more froggy like and everything devolved from there. yes i made them less human. it's fun. catboy iida is really funny to me so i did it. ojiro's still special and the only one who has a tail because i don't want to take that from him.

Artfight Postmortem

as you may know, i am prone to reflection on my art and process and progress. herein, i'm gonna navel gaze a bit about artfight 2024.

top line: really enjoyed myself, did a bunch of new things and this was "The Year of Artist Friends" which is spectacular.

i completed 20 attacks this year, including my first ever mass attacks! altogether I drew 28 different characters (incl 4 of my own).

for the first time, I had *users* i wanted to attack, rather than just characters i'd gathered via search or discord. honestly, three years ago when i picked up the stylus i was just excited at the prospect of drawing for other people, period. artfight was a cool way to be in community without prerequisites. i didn't quite dare to dream i might make some real connections and make proper friends. and yet :) here we are! i went in with three 'art friends' and i'm leaving with at least three more

in addition to being the year of artist friends, this could be "the year of clip studio paint was on megasale a week before artfight" because i knocked out like 2 practice pieces before July 1st so i wouldn't be starting with completely unfamiliar tools, but i used/learned csp for the vast majority of my attacks. one i finished in krita (lonnie), and my final attack i only used krita.

definitely trial-by-fired myself! but it motivated me to explore csp, and most important, gave me a reason to practice practice practice. last year i drew almost exclusively humans, lots of full bodys, because i wanted to get a better grip on anatomy and drawing a variety of faces. it worked then, and, well, i think i learned more of csp in one month of artfight than i would have if i was just plodding through my personal projects for 33 days :) *looks at my wip folder with months old files* pretty sure.

ok i'm gonna look at a few faves/standouts now:

came in hot with 0tt0 here! the main brush for this one (froggy pencil) was a mainstay for the whole month. so versatile!!! and lovely texture. this isn't quiiite brat green but this was what made me go, hmm, what if i... did a few pieces inspired by this album i can't stop listening to?

and then i took a huge turn and just used a soft round brush for Desa and Iryna for my dear friend @bobomcfoe bc i really wanted to turn these out in something approaching my "usual style" of late and i feared getting too deep into the temptations of csp if i put them off. and, um, yeah i love them. i got sooo close to matching that angle but ahh i can see the tilt now! nonetheless, love these two, not least bc brookie has some of the most pleasing color palettes to work w :)

then on to Rosé and baby's first vector lines! you can RESIZE lines in csp. did you know that? i didn't know that. i did forget to use it as much as i could have in later ones though, so i still only kinda know it ig. and halftone shading! bc why not? another thing i really only did this once, but want to experiment with more

Rook here, for my new friend @gender-premium-tm, was me realizing how to use filters/filter layers in csp. now THAT is something i used a lot this month! also something i use often in krita. i must say, though the csp options are slightly more limited (afaik), they have oomph!

okay these two are my "explicitly brat pieces"! artfight keeps you moving, which i find really valuable, bc i could have dithered foreverrr over Lonnie's gif here. like, do i add his arm? maybe he should be wearing a shirt? or, what if i just draw him twice, instead of splitting the expressi--see it just never ends. and as i am always going on about, art is so precious bc it is a reflection of us when we make it. maybe for some future artfight i'll redraw this (as Lonnie's artist @wenmistry did for me with Ebon this year), but for july 2024, i'm amazed at how well i executed this for just 2.5 days of work! (i did forget his glasses, which realization gave me a different take on the composition, so this is high on my list of potential redraws)

and then Aagatha. this is in my top 3 for this year. the pink just works so well with the green and her artist added the song to her character playlist AND added the necklace to her actual dnd inventory. like. omg. the impact your art can have!!! how freaking cool is that???

two mass attacks! i was in a silly goofy mood. i feel like i really got a handle on vectors w the anthro mass attack, i adjusted every single point on that one by hand. weird what hyperfocus makes you do sometimes, but i learned a lot from that. mainly that i will probably never user vectors as my main linework tool. there are circumstances it is perfect for, and outside of that i'm good w my raster lines lol

which is exactly what i used for this other mass attack, featuring mostly my ocs. hey, sometimes you need to shake things up! i can see here the style starting to hew back to my "usual style", though i'm thinking that might have a lot to do with drawing 5 people very quickly. falling back on practiced techniques. and by this time i apparently knew csp well enough to reproduce them pretty closely! ooh, one thing this made me miss was the transform tool in krita. that floor was ROUGH to wrestle into place in csp.

Echo is my crowning achievement with the froggy pencil, most of the shading here is just layers w that. and one last nod to brat green :)

i've worked in the paper cut style before (both my pfp's use it) but i really exploited csp's clipping layers to make Scraps here. they did make me briefly forget how they work in krita when i switched back, so well done w that

i played with gradient maps a little earlier in the month but for Okanar i actually made my own gradient! really a useful tool for ref'ing real human skin tones to make non-human ones, without muddying them up too much.

finally, Chaos. this actually might be my favorite! ironically this is the one that i made in krita. it was like, ahh, yes my old friend. wait where is the scroll bar. ah, okay, yes my old friend... the line layer is set to burn which just makes the whole thing so warm (and the cause of the red outlines on the earrings). used my old sable brush, a pattern fill set to overlay... my old stomping grounds! but plus a rendering technique i picked up this month and some other random habits i picked up in csp (like copying a detail to a new layer, moving it where i want a copy, and drawing/tracing it back onto the original layer in the new position. nothing i couldn't have been doing in krita all along, but made easier by the tool layout in csp, and therefore now discovered by me. amazing how one integrates new knowledge. it's like magic sometimes!!!)

Been working on some new Coveling designs! This is just one of 4 designs I'm in the process of drawing digitally from my sketchbook, as well as some new and old item designs. The first batch of drawings is at least half a decade old, probably more! They don't really represent my current art style or plan for Crescent Cove. :']

Not sure how much I want to share v. save for eventual alpha-testing / future. What do y'all think? Would you rather see everything, or have surprises? Of course, anything actually "secret" I'll keep to myself, but I'm more than happy to share more if y'all would like to see! I have some little froggy / toad buddies I've been working on that I think are gonna be super cute! :P

Trying to enjoy the process and not be too much of a self-critic or fixate on the little things - designs can always be touched up down the line!

Inspired by my evil little cat named Biscuit who likes to yell at me for food when I get home - also, tiger sharks and other shark species, obviously haha. I think they're pretty cute!

1.When did you start creating art? - since i could use crayons and pencils, maybe around the age of 3-4... i liked filling notebooks with silly little comics for myself or drawing pokemon, then i decided i wanted to take it more seriously around the age of 7-8 because i wanted to draw legit-looking dragons… somehow down the line that’s brought me to drawing footballers. 

8.How would you describe your art style? - As an anime/western cartoony art style typically found on tumblr. Doing digital art as a teenager, I was obsessed with the style of art that’s popular on pixiv and deviantart otakus, but i eventually got fed up with it being too pretty, it was inadequate for drawing… more “realistic” human features. So i tried to adopt a more western style to depict that, but I wasn’t satisfied with this either — maybe because it wasn’t turning out pretty enough… And while studying politics in school, I looked to political cartoons for inspiration, including those from the 19th-20th centuries — i think this is how i picked up using black lines and crosshatching effects, and i try to convey an irreverent tone. So.. it’s an awkward mix between being anime, western-animation, and.. somehow slightly political cartoon inspired?

10.How do you deal with art block? - Try to put pressure off myself, take time to absorb ideas rather than come up with them by looking at other works of art, sketching details that interest me. Going for walks with my sketchbook (or ipad) to do sketches or studies of things i see. Engaging with other media - reading, music, tv, and allowing myself to digest the experience. Tricking myself that occasional periods of frustration are growing pains. If I’m lucky (more like, if i’m more disciplined) then an art block just means i can spend creative time doing writing instead.

17.Your personal favourite works of art (not made by you) are���?

I cannot easily think of my goated artworks and i fear that i’m going to forget the pieces that’s been most important to me in my life. I also fear there’s too many to fill in to this answer. So I’ll just name four to sample.

La Jeune Martyre by Delaroche. I learnt of it when Cameos posted their pixel art rendition of it (probably also counts as among my favourite artworks). I have been obsessed with it since then and got to see it in the Louvre for my birthday last year. It’s so ethereal and eerie, and reminds me somewhat of Twin Peaks.

Angel’s Egg (the movie). Something about pieces that have this ethereal or liminal quality that engage you, they really get to me. 

Ruby, Gold and Malachite by Henry Scott Tuke. I used the title of this painting for the title of my blog once, a stunning set of colours/minerals to imagine together. Anyway, twinks galore, who says no. 

Saturn Devouring His Son by Francisco Goya. I like the backstory of Goya’s black paintings. Painting such an image on the wall of your house is a powerful way to go out to say the least.

Animal Crossing memories, part 2

It's brand new day, time to get back to it! I'm going to toss in some of my favourite ACNH screenshots between the paragraphs. Stuff that I wasn't able to fit in previously, most of it silly, some pretty. They don't have anything to do with what I have to say, but I'd like to share them somewhere & I don't want this post to be a plain wall of text either. Let's go!

So what is my overall opinion on the game? I think it's awesome. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I didn't get around to experience any of the previous AC instalments, so I have no way to compare. I know that some of the faithful fans of the series aren't necessarily thrilled with New Horizons & looking at their criticisms, they raise good points! Personally I enjoy the game for what it is: there's no wrong way to play it and there is no pressure to do it one way or another. I keep coming back to the Sims and Minecraft for the exact same reasons.

When I opened New Horizons on my birthday this year, I finally took the time to check out all of the features they added over 2 years ago. Better late than never I say! They were met with a mixture of excitement and disappointment, haha. Mostly that first one, thankfully. Cyrus' customisation workshop is hands down one of the best things ever - you no longer have to hunt down your desired item variations on Nookazon or beg your friends for them. There are so, so many new objects in the game. Some of the prices were reduced. You can customise your home inside and outside as well as expand your storage. Froggy chair is back!

Let me tell you though, I was appalled when I found out that bulk crafting wasn't implemented. Why, Nintendo. Why! I know they're still adding minor patches to the game, but I'm afraid it's safe to assume that we're never going to get that at this point. I understand why it wouldn't apply to big items, but fish bait? Come on. We can already buy stuff in bulk. Same thing applies to Nook Miles tickets, why the heck can't we print several at the time? Or fly from one mystery island to another, skipping the airport? Eugh. I heard that Nintendo is notorious for not taking the voices of their fanbase into consideration, so I believe we're stuck forever with these pesky mechanics!

But I don't want to be a negative Nancy. I will stand by my words: the game is awesome. I'm thankful for what we got! I believe New Horizons truly deserved its success and I hope the next instalment in the series will receive a warm welcome just like this one. Unlike some players, I don't think another major update is necessary. Of course it would be great, though the game feels finished to me - with all the events, items, recipes, customisation options, it's a solid title. I can safely say it's one of my favourites as far as all games go.

Now, with all that said, what does the future hold for my little island of Pan? Well... the days of Pan are numbered. After some back and forth, I decided it's time to delete my save file and start fresh. I will take a hot minute to explain why (so bear with me if you're curious), but first I want to say why it was a tough choice. Pan is nearly dang perfect for me. Great layout, long pier, blue airport, oranges as my native fruit and windflowers as native.. flowers! I have quite a few items & board drawings that I hold very dear because they came from friends. I like all of my villagers a lot. I love how the island looks. I have so many memories. After all, it's my true and only Pan.

What's wrong, then?! A lot, man. A lot. Even though I'm proud of how the island looks, it's not fun to play on and that alone is a big deal breaker for me. I (mostly) finished it around the time when heavily-terraformed and decorated islands were all the rage & unfortunately developed that unhealthy mindset of comparing myself to all those much more skilled players. For whatever reason, I wanted to live up to somebody else's standards. Not anymore! My next keyword would be "less": less decorations, less flowers, less trees, less cliffs, less waterfalls. (Seriously. They are so frickin' loud)

Admittedly, Pan doesn't have nearly as much clutter as some other islands do, but it's still a problem in many different ways. The whole central part lags and it drives me nuts every time. I'm pretty much confined to walking on paths as there isn't a lot of open space anymore. Said custom paths flicker a lot. Performing some of the daily tasks can be difficult. Wanna catch a fish? There ain't no space. Shoot down an airdrop? Nope, no space. Build a Snowboy without the snowball getting obliterated 10 times in a row? No. Space.

I know there's always an option to declutter, remodel or flatten and start over - I did these and considered them again! But each and every one seems so daunting now. This brings me to my next point: I miss so many things from the early stages of the game. The spacious, natural feeling of a brand new island. Darting around the place like there's no tomorrow. Slowly building everything from scratch, making your own way through it all. Catching all the critters, searching for fossils, getting scammed by Jolly Redd. Heck, even paying off all the effing debt!

I'm always a strong advocate for a second playthrough. It's true that I love jumping into games with as little knowledge about them as possible, hardly anything can replace that fresh, first experience! But it's so much fun to rediscover too. I pay a lot more attention to detail whenever I replay because I already know the main story and I'm ready to take in all of the smaller things. There is no real story in Animal Crossing, just progress and I hope to take it a little at a time. When the game came out, I had a bit of an unhealthy obsession with it, haha. (Who didn't, though?)

I never visited any of the famed treasure islands, but I did time travel quite a bit. Both things can be absolutely okay if they're exactly what you're looking for. Not sure if that was the right choice for me. I played for hours on end, grinding so hard that I think I just burned myself out much sooner that I wanted to. I couldn't bring myself to touch New Horizons for a long time after that. I believe many other players experienced something similar. That and also all the dramas that inevitably erupted with an introduction of so many new players to the AC community. The game kind of faded into obscurity after its prime. Folks were collectively tired.

Many aspects of that initial hullabaloo were great, not gonna lie! Jumping on the bandwagon, sharing our adventures, making memes. Still, it feels nice to come back after it all subsided - to a game that is, after all, supposed to be relaxing and mellow. I've mellowed down over the years too. Not only that, but I also don't feel the need to rush through it as there is no fear of spoilers anymore, I already know all the unlocks, I know what happens in the game. I'm looking forward to getting back into it with a fresh, blank canvas to have fun on and a more open mind.

If I can figure out how, I will record a tour. If it's worth it, I will save a dream address. This little fictional land meant so much to me (and I can't even fully explain why I get so attached to stuff like that). I even don't know why I just spent so much time talking about Animal Crossing. Perhaps it's easier for me to talk about games, cartoons and fictional characters than my personal life? It is easier for sure!
