Been a hot sec since I’ve seen the first one, but I don’t remember this franchise being so gory. They really amped up the gore on the sequel.

Seems even more appropriate now because I am a radio host now. Piques my interest in stories about radio (recs please!)

Just like the first film, the dinner scene is so unsettling. Especially the close up shots on the family. Makes me think of family dinners <3

I could write an entire dissertation about how the chainsaw = the penis.

Watch this if:

You feel like your family is driving you insane

Vegetarianism speaks to you immensely

The phallic imagery isn’t too on the nose for you

Similar titles:

Let’s be clear: Easy Rider is not a horror film. But somehow, it feels closer to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre than almost anything that actually sits within the horror genre. That’s not a knock on horror—it's a testament to how raw and unsettling Easy Rider really is, beneath the counterculture iconography.

Visually and tonally, it hits the same nerve. You’ve got the scorched Southern landscapes, the dusty highways, and that psychedelic imagery that gives way to something uglier. Both films weaponize the road trip structure: wide open America that slowly closes in on its characters until violence strikes as quickly and abruptly as Leatherface's mallet. And just like when the door slams shut in the Sawyer house, the Southwestern landscapes resume their passive silence. 

In Easy Rider, death isn’t foreshadowed, moralized, or explained—it just happens at random. Like in TCM, nihilism is part of the landscape, treating its characters with the same cold indifference as the sun beating down on the road. There's no catharsis. Just silence, and maybe a dog barking in the distance.

It’s kind of poetic—or maybe cursed, given his career prospects in 1986—that Dennis Hopper, who co-wrote, directed, and starred in Easy Rider, would later appear in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the only sequel helmed by Tobe Hooper himself. It’s like Hopper was already orbiting this world of Southern-fried horror long before chainsaws were involved.

Easy Rider isn’t horror. But it feels more like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre than any of its sequels or imitators, including the second instalment.
