RXM Reality, the project of Chicago-based producer and composer Mike Meegan, blends breakcore, techno, grime, noise, and other styles into detailed composites. Meegan has made five albums to date under the RXM banner, four on Hausu Mountain and one on Orange Milk. Dusted’s Andrew Forell looked under the hood to find the pop in Meegan’s latest, No. 1 in the World, observing “[He] buries it deep beneath slabs of distortion, glitched out percussion, processed vocals and meatgrinder effects. Still, it wriggles and writhes through the cracks to lie exhausted on the surface, grains swept into semblances of songs besmeared with dirt.” Here are 11 decidedly un-pop songs close to Meegan’s heart.

This is a clip from Children of Men where Michael Cain plays the Aphex Twin track “Omgyjya switch 7” with screams edited over it. I saw this movie in a theater when I was pretty young and this clip really made a lasting impression on me.

UK Dubstep and its offshoots are huge for me. I love how this track is edited like a bunch of tape loops cut together.

Toiret status, koeosaeme, and CVN all just travelled from Japan to play in Chicago and the show was absolutely amazing. I had the pleasure of hanging out with them before the show and we went to Hyde Park together. This whole album is awesome.

Actress — Get Ohn (Fairlight Mix)

I used to listen to this album a lot when I was falling asleep and I would start lucidly hallucinating. The interchanging loops of Actress’s music shifts so subtly that even if you think they are locked in and looping together, they are actually shifting and morphing through the songs.

Björk’s takeover of Tri Angle Records’ Rinse FM show (1/8) (February 18, 2015) - HD

This choice covers a lot of influences for me. Different shows on Rinse FM turned me on to so many amazing songs that I have forgotten and will probably never remember. This particular mix is Bjork and Robin Carolan DJ’ing a bunch of Tri Angle Records songs. Björk is an amazing DJ and will always be ahead of her time. Tri Angle was such an awesome label.

Nozomu Matsumoto is Tokyo-based artist and curator. Nozomu has done curation for Tokyo Art Meeting VI TOKYO: Sensing the Cultural Magma of the Metropolis at The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, 2015. His sound design work includes Nile Koetting’s Sustainable Hours at Maison Hermés, 2016 and FUKAMI, une plongée dans l'esthétique japonaise at Hôtel Salomon de Rothschild, 2018. Nozomu released remarkable first vinyl Climatotherapy and début for The Death of Rave in 2018. Climatotherapy also developed as a performance installation in collaboration with Nile Koetting in ASSEMBLY at Somerset House in 2018.

Chicago avant-vaporwave artist shares another taste of upcoming LP for Hausu Mountain Fire-Toolz has been one of the most exciting names in experimental electronic music over the last few years. Armed with dreamy vaporwave atmospherics, pummeling rapid-fire beats and shrieking vocal dissonance, the Chicago-based artist has impressed on a variety of albums, including last year’s lush and expansive Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace). Today she shares a galvanizing video for brand new song “Rainbow Bridge,” the title track off her forthcoming LP which arrives on May 8 via Hausu Mountain. Right out of the gate, machine gun-like digital percussion and blood-curdling screams swirl frantically before the track enters a peaceful lull, underscoring bending, twinkling synths and staticky swells of background static. Soon, a cavalcade of noodling guitars bleeds through the mix, giving the track its wondrous, shimmering kick. The song then powers down for a moment – a tranquil calm before the storm, in which a final last-gasp stratospheric noise crescendo brings everything to its explosive, cathartic conclusion. The video clip, meanwhile, is crafted with deft visual aplomb; a flurry of eye-popping colors and graphic visual overlays conjure a kaleidoscopic, acid-washed visual tapestry. Chicago producer Angel Marcloid’s Fire-Toolz project releases a new album Rainbow Bridge on Hausu Mountain on May 7. Today we premiere the music video of the album’s title track. The album follows Field Whispers (Into The Crystal Palace) on Orange Milk and returns Fire-Toolz to Hausu Mountain. Toiret Status, Koeosaeme, CVN, woopheadclrms, Machine Girl, and EQUIP participated in a Fire-Toolz remix album Triangular Reformat. Field Whispers (Into the Crystal Palace) was a groundbreaking program of electronic fantasy that was painstakingly realized with a delicate, complex, and three-dimensional vision. A consummate collage of MIDI composition, Fire-Toolz music changes and recombines constantly within each track, producing a magnificent baroque spread filled with beauty and chaos. Passing through the consciousness of sorrow and sadness, screams turn into love.

自主企画PLAYSET vol.8が近づいて参りました！

今回の出演者について、あくまで僕の観点で、出会いや印象を書いていこうと思います。 --- まずはSNJOくん。

彼とはVMOが主催する「世紀末」というイベントで出会いました。イベントの前に昔からgroup_inouを聞いていたという事をTwitterに書いてくれて、嬉しいなぁ～と思っていました。実際に会うと、とてもシャイな青年で、しかし音楽的には色んな方向に可能性の枝葉が伸びていて、キラキラしている印象でした。歌ができるという点も素晴らしいなーと思っていました。そして、先日メトロのビンちゃん主催のカオスイベント「スクリューパイルドライバー」で久しぶりに共演したのですが、歌もサウンドも格段にパワーアップしていて、堂々たるパフォーマンスにビックリしました。今はどんどん変化している時期だと思うので、PLAYSETのライブも楽しみです！ ---

映像作家の橋本麦ちゃんから教えてもらいました。麦ちゃんからミュージシャンをおすすめしてもらうのは初めてだったので、驚いた事を覚えています。麦ちゃんが作った新千歳空港国際アニメーション映画祭のオープニングでは音楽を担当されています。僕は「Toiret Statue」というアルバムが大好きで、このアルバムとthe hatchの「OpaqueAge」だけを交互に聴いてる時期がありました。実際両者のサウンドは全然違うのですが、リズムの面白さに共通するものを感じていて、勝手に2マン観たいなーとか夢想していました。toiret statusさんの音楽は聴いていると凝り固まった脳みそがほぐれていくような、手放し運転しているような感覚があって、いつもモヤモヤしている時にフレッシュな刺激をもらっています。メロコアのドラムからスタートしたという点にも勝手に親近感を覚えています。ライブを観るのは初めてなので、とても楽しみです！

Tsudio Studioさん。

この夏、宮崎に旅行したのですが、台風で行きの飛行機が欠航になってしまいました。突然やる事が無くなってしまったので、よく行くTHREEのスケジュールを見ていると、Local Visionsのアーティストの名前が並んでいました。僕はこの時点でLocal Visionsについて詳しく知らなかったのですが、ビンちゃんからイベントが大盛況だった話を聞いていたり、SNJOくんがリリースしているので、とても気になっていました。そこで一気にLocal Visionsのアーティストを知ることになるのですが、みんなスタイルはバラバラなのにどこか統一した空気感があって、激しい音楽ではないのにお客さんは熱気を帯びていて、その様子がとても新鮮で感動しました。そこでトリを務めていたのが、Tsudio Studioさんです。SNJOくんがLocal Visionsの"若頭"なら、まさに"組長"のライブでした。その余韻に浸ったまま、一日遅れで到着した宮崎ではずっとTsudio Studioさんの「Port Island」聴いていました。奇跡的なタイミングで出会えたと思っています！

最後はさよひめぼうさん。

まあー怪物ですよね。最初に名前を見たのはパ音の「SOUND EXPO」で、目撃した人たちがとにかく異常なテンションになっていた事を覚えています。僕もすぐに音源を聴いて、ぶっ飛ばされました。初めてライブを観たのはこれもパ音のイベントで、前日岡山でオールナイトだったのですが、さよひめぼうさんが観たくて急いで東京に帰った記憶があります。ライブは音源以上に肉体的で凄まじく、ADと体が千切れるほど踊り狂いました。そして、先日マルチネからリリースされた「深圳DIVA」が、また新しい地平を切り開いていて、本当に素晴らしいです。関西でさよひめぼうさんを観れる機会は多くないと思うので、ぜひ目撃して下さい！

応募してくれた他の皆様の全員の音源を事細かに覚えているか、と問われれば正直言うと難しいです。

それでもどこかで「応募しました」等と声をかけてくださったりしますし、

どこかでピックアップされてり聞いたりした人が「音源を送ってくれた人だ」と思う機会がままあり、そういった事が嬉しいです。

オーディションとかではなく縁を持ちたい、という私の一方的な欲望をなんとか良い影響に転化できばと思い開催しましたが、結果が分かるのはもう少し先になると思います。
