All in all, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz was a pretty good adaptation as an Oz sequel. Despite very clearly following up the 1939 film and using those variations of the characters, it was made by people who really cared about the books and knew their stuff. It was chock filled with references and nods to Oz things from several adaptations, not just the books. Though of course they were warped to fit the plot the movie was telling.

Some of these details in no particular order included the erection of a Dorothy statue, the Nome King pursuing revenge on Dorothy, being able to bring inanimate objects to life with a magical substance, background posters for the '39 Professor Marvel, bringing the Wizard back to Oz, casting actors like James Monroe Igleheart (literally how did they get him?!) who were in other productions, the inclusion of musical numbers from the '39 film that didn't make the first Hanna-Barbera film or reprises (including the Jitterbug!), the Queen of the Field Mice appearing, the nomes having a giant unending pit they throw people in, and the Wizard returning to Oz to stay even after Dorothy leaves.

It was really nice to see the nomes finally in a film adaptation! And Jason Alexander killed as Ruggedo. I am a hater at heart though, so I have a few minor issues with their portrayal. The emphasis on his being a King first and foremost and wanting things due to his station obscured his portrayal that I always read as a critique of a uber rich gilded age American business man, and things like his symbol mimicking the flag of the Soviet Union also didn't mesh cohesively. And they spelled Nome with a G. That being said they really cashed in on the puns with things like nome sweet nome, and there's no place like nome, which I appreciated and felt was in the spirit of the source material while also honoring the '39 film.

The animation was significantly worse than the last film, but this is a sequel and a Hanna-Barbera annual film at that, so keeping that in mind it was pretty good. I think the whole animation budget went to the Jitterbug sequence, which looked significantly better than the rest of the film.

My only comment on it as a Hanna-Barbera piece of media is that, unlike the last movie where Tom and Jerry played a big role and basically propelled the plot forward, they do absolutely nothing here. They are barely in any scenes. This movie is much more about Oz and all the characters, and would lose only minutes of screen time if you cut Tom and Jerry. Not that I mind, but I'm sure Tom and Jerry fans weren't as thrilled about this one. The original songs were nice touches though.

All in all a fun but simple time, made better if you know it's a goofy watch and enjoy with your Ozian friends or a drink or two!

If you're curious what a sequel to MGM's Wizard of Oz would be like, Tom and Jerry's Back to Oz is surprisingly a decent venture, even includes deleted stuff like the Jitterbug and characters from the books.

When they were all quite presentable they followed the soldier girl into a big room where the Witch Glinda sat upon a throne of rubies. She was both beautiful and young to their eyes. Her hair was a rich red in color and fell in flowing ringlets over her shoulders. Her dress was pure white but her eyes were blue, and they looked kindly upon the little girl. "What can I do for you, my child?" she asked.

Of course, when talking about the most famous Wicked Witch of Oz, we HAVE to go by the 1939 "The Wizard of Oz" movie, the MGM production that ended up making Oz a worldwide phenomenon and shaped pop culture's view of the Land of Oz to this day, overshadowing the original Baum novels for many, many decades, up until... Well up until today.

The 1939 movie is also a crucial part of the development of the Wicked Witch of the West's design, as the MGM's Witch played by Margaret Hamilton became THE most famous face of the character, and a defining visual for basically most witches in pop culture. The black dress with the pointy hat, the long chin with the hooked nose, the sharp fingernails, the broomstick, the wicked cackle and above all the green skin - all of this became utterly iconic, despite none of these elements being present in Baum's novel.

Of course a huge part of the success of this specific incarnation of the Witch was Margaret Hamilton's performance. She famously played the Wicked sorceress a few more times - never actually putting back the exact same makeup or outfit, but still carrying on the spirit of the character throughout various media.

The most famous example is the Sesame Street episode considered "lost" for a very long time and that the Internet has been so obsessed about. There Hamilton plays back the Wicked Witch, though in a more disheveled version and with as an added touch a green lining on the cape:

Several other media were created as a direct follow-up or continuation of the 1939 MGM movie, and as such reuse the "MGM design" of the Wicked Witch, with various modifications. For example I am thinking of the 1990 cartoon series "The Wizard of Oz", an animated direct-sequel to the MGM movie, where the Witch reappears with some design change (the facial features are more bulbous, the pointy nails are painted red, the outfit is purple instead of black)

A more recent example would be the children cartoon "Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz", another serial-sequel to the MGM movie and where the witch makes recurring appearances. Though the design was made to fit more Hamilton's makeup and outfit, the purple touch remains, to help with the natural difficulty of animating an all-black outfit.

And, of course, you also have the infamous "Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz"

A much more well-received and famous revival of Hamilton's character was the 2011 musical "The Wizard of Oz", a stage transposition of the MGM movie by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The witch in this production, while taking back all the MGM-specific traits (the green skin, the black outfit, the broomstick) also has personal features that make her stand out. Notably the heavy use of feathers in her outfit and the evolution of her hair, which goes from a spiral hairdo evoking both a witch's hat and a tornado, to an "exploded" form more reminiscent of a storm cloud. This results in a more "aerial" witch with a strong sky-motif to her.

Y'know what's funny? All last year peeps kept liking my 'Didn't Wanna Feel Old' journal from 2023. One commenter said I should make a new one for 2024. Jee, ya' don't say? Guess you missed how that was already a thing. Was nobody interested in seeing what all reached a major milestone back in 2024? Ghostbusters, Ninja Turtles, Transformers, they all celebrated their 40th Anniversary, Lion King had its 30th, a lot of cool stuff got that much older. Shame nobody seemed to notice.
