A quick sketch this morning and learning about some writers I’ve never heard of. Pak Kyongni, was a South Korean poet and novelist who earned international acclaim for the 21-volume epic novel T’oji (1969–94; "Land"), in which she chronicled Korea’s history from 1897 to 1945. The collapse and resurgence of the Choi family at the centre of the plot actually signifies the fall and rise of the Korean people, and what Pak emphasizes through the whole story is the importance of loving kindness and cherishing life. The ironclad/robot wars vehicle is from a monument to Nikolai Gogol, the writer of another book for my reading list, Taras Bulba, is a romanticized historical telling of the life of a Zaporozhian Coassack. The titular character Taras Bulba, and his two sons Andriy and Ostap, are the center of the tale. The original story was deemed “too Ukrainian” by Russian authorities, and Gogol rewrote the story to produce a rather different second edition which showcased far more Russian nationalist themes.
