Perfect To Love Part 14

Pairing: Steve Harrington x FemReader!PlusSize
Warnings: fluff, mentions of bullying, body image issues, fat shaming, angst, trust issues, language.
Summary: Beth Walker was used to living in the shadows. She had only one friend and anyone else who paid her mind usually bullied her for her size. So she learned to keep her mouth shut, her head down, and her heart closed because she had to accept the fact that she would be nothing more than the fat girl to people. That is until Robin decides Beth needs more in life and that might just include a boy who she never would’ve thought could see her for who she truly was.

Part 13 ←→ Part 15
Masterlist

Neither Alan or Allie fought Beth when she said she wasn’t going to school that morning. After all it was the day before Thanksgiving break so how much could she really be missing? So they both left for work, leaving Beth alone in her bed to stare out at the small inch of snow that covered the earth. It would probably melt and return a few times until winter completely swallowed them whole, but for now she would be heartbroken while the earth froze and for some reason that thought made her somewhat content.
Steve had called Robin in a panic, telling her that he had tried to call Beth only to be told she didn't want to talk to him. Robin had tried to call herself only for Allie to inform her of the same thing. She tried to recall ay moment, maybe something that happened at school that could make Beth shut them out, but she came up completely short. She assured Steve that it could be something else bothering her entirely and she would talk to her tomorrow. But when Beth didnt show up for school Robin found herself worrying more and more that maybe it was something that she did.
“She’s not here” Robin grumbled once she was sat in the front seat of Steve’s BMW his head on a swivel, searching each of the Escorts in the parking lot in hope to find hers.
“Something has to be wrong” Steve finally said and Robin sighed as she leaned back in the seat. She wasn’t used to being shut out.
“Obviously Steve, any clue what it could be?” she didn’t mean to sound so rude but the sarcasm and annoyance was unavoidable while she stressed about her friend.
“Not a thought” he muttered, eyes still scanning the parking lot in hopes she’d appear.
“What’d you do?” both of the teenagers jumped as Dustin appeared in the back seat of the car, slamming the door shut behind him.
“Jesus Dustin, what do you even mean?” Steve asked, a hand over his heart as he tried to calm its pace.
"Beth didn't show up to free period with me and Eddie and she would never miss school. So what did you do?" Dustin accused, pointing at Steve and ready to skin him alive for any wrong doing to his new friend.
"Nothing, I dont know. Me and Robin both called last night and her Mom said she didn't want to talk to us. We're just as confused as you" Steve defended himself but Dustin wasn’t fully convinced.
"Well we better figure it out before she goes to New York for Thanksgiving" Dustin said leaning back in the seat and buckling himself in. Confused looks plastered across both the older friends faces and Dustin almost rolled his eyes.
"She's going away?" Steve started to ask because he felt like this was something he should have known but maybe he just missed it, forgot. No way he could've forgotten.
"Look we'll worry about that later but I have a plan, drive to Beth's" Robin said and Steve obeyed, shifting the car into gear, and taking off down the roads covered in a soft layer of white snow. They all were relieved to see the Escort in the driveway but neither of her parents vehicles.
After a mostly silent ride, everyone experiencing different thoughts over this disappearing act Beth had pulled. Steve racked his brain and hated to admit that his thoughts always went back to Colin. He probably said something and ruined it, upset her, and he was fully prepared to kill him if need be. Robin worried that she got scared, scared of being with Steve, and not thinking she was good enough, and she was ready to prove her wrong. Where Dustin fully stood behind the fact the two idiots had done something whether it was intentional or not.
"So what's this masterplan?" Steve asked nervously, stomach doing somersaults over the fact she was just inside.
"This" Robin said as she grabbed a stack of books from her bag. "It's Beth work for over break, I collected it for her so I had an excuse to come here"
"Genius!" Steve praised and Dustin rolled his eyes. They were definitely both idiots.
"Look give me just a minute and then I'll give you guys a signal to join me" Robin said and they both nodded as she slipped out the car and into the cold. They watched as she stood on the porch, raising a nervous hand to ring the doorbell.
Beth groaned audibly as she heard the doorbell ring throughout the house. Quickly she tugged on a hoodie as she rushed down the stairs to see who from her mothers church group she'd have to turn away. Yet when she glanced through the peephole she was met with her twitchy and nervous friend Robin. Ex friend. "I don't want to talk to you"
"I'm not here to talk" Robin said after flinching from the response her friend had given her.
"Robin, you always have something to say" Beth sighed out, almost so quietly through the door she didn't hear it.
"Beth I have your school work, I'm worried about you, that's all" Robin counter offered and Beth pressed her forehead aginst the door wishing she would’ve just let whoever rang the doorbell go away.
"Just leave it on the porch, please" Beth said sounding a bit strangled from trying to fight off the tears that were burning to come out.
"Beth what did I do, why are you shutting me out?" Robin ignored her request and Steve and Dustin both noticed she was talking to the closed door, only assuming Beth was on the other side.
"Just leave it Robin" Beth finally cried out and Robin sighed as she leaned to set the stack of books at the foot of the door. Steve hit the steering wheel as he watched Robin retreat back to the car and jump inside to escape the cold.
"Let me try" Dustin said, pushing himself out of the back seat before Steve could ask what had happened. Dustin wrapped his arms around himself, the wind pushing his hat back slightly as he approached the door. He was about to ring the doorbell when he still heard Beth's soft cries on the other side.
"Beth, what’s wrong?" he called out and Beth gasped slightly at the sound of Dustin's voice, backing away from the door so he couldn't hear her.
"Nothing Dustin, don't worry about it, please" she called back and Dustin sighed as he tried to keep from shivering in the cold.
"We're all so worried about you" he said and Beth felt more tears burn at her eyes because choosing to leave behind Steve and Robin included everyone else including this sweet young boy who had become such a good friend to her. That thought broke her heart even more as she considered that in the friend divorce they would all get the kids she had come to know and love.
"I know Dustin, and you're the best for checking on me. I just need to be alone" and before Dustin could respond he heard her footsteps rushing up the stairs. The pair in the car watched his shoulders drop as he returned to the car himself after another failed attempt.
"That was a bust" Dustin said as he closed himself into the warmth of the vehicle. Steve's heater working over time. "She ran back upstairs before I could say anything else"
"Robin which room is hers?" Steve questioned and Robin gave him a confused look before pointing to the left window above the canopy of the porch. "I'll be back"
"Wait Steve, dont get hurt!' Robin called after him but he slammed the drivers side door shut while ignoring her. Dustin leaned forward to watch as Steve jogged up the porch. As if he had done this a hundred times before he was swigning a leg to stand on the rail. He used one of the beams to keep balance as he stood up, twisting his body to grip the edge of the canopy, and begin to pull himself up. Steve had always been strong because of swimming and basketball and now he was strong from staying in shape to fight monsters. Thankfully it came in handy as he finally got majority of his body on the canopy and he was able to walk across and face her window.
Before he tapped on the glass he saw her curled in bed, the room dark as she shook with tears and his heart broke. He wanted to know what he had done, what they could do to fix it. Giving in he tapped on the glass just to see her jump before looking at him with a tear stained face. Beth went against her better judgment and stood to open the window. Steve couldn’t help but smile as she revealed herself to him as he sat crouched out her window. "You're gonna get hurt"
"It was worth the risk" he told her and she sighed, using the sleeve of her hoodie to wipe her face clean of tears. "Can I come in?"
"I don't think you should" she responded and he tried to hide his disppoitnent in her response. Sighing he leaned closer into the window, heart accelerating at how beautiful her hazel eyes looked. So clear from the tears she had let fall. Beth wished he didn't look so handsome himself, hair fluffy and lashes covered in soft snowflakes. She wanted to kiss each one of them away.
"Why are you shutting us out?" Steve asked and Beth sighed, more tears fighting to come to her eyes. He wanted to reach out to her, hold her, but he was worried he’d scare her away.
"I stopped into Family Video yesterday" Steve gave her a confused look, clealry recalling she hadn't been there because she had work herself. Then it dawned on him that him and Robin had been talking about her at work, talking about their plan, that she had been using the back door lately. The exact one he knew you could hear crystal clear through because he had done it himself.
“Oh Beth, you don't understand-" but Beth was holding up her hand, stopping his defense because she didn't want to hear anymore bullshit from either of them.
"Did you know Colin told me he had feelings for me?” Steve was confused again as he let these words sink in. "He told me he hated himself for being attracted to me when everyone else bullied me for being ugly and do you want to know what I said to him?"
"What?" Steve whispered, never have seeing Beth this angry before. It was like he had pushed her past the sad part and now she was just frustrated.
"I told him I ended up with you because you got to know me without someone asking you too, and that made all the difference" Steve sucked in a sharp breath as she told him this, realizing that in a way they had done her wrong. The intentions were pure but maybe she was right. Maybe Steve would have never looked at her without Robin asking him too.
"Beth, please let me explain" she was shaking her head and Steve felt his heart collapse because she had already decided he wasn't worth it. Just like everyone else did.
“I don’t need an explanation Steve. I get it. Robin is your friend and maybe you have changed, it’s not your fault you can’t be attracted to me. You were just being a good friend to Robin” Beth said and Steve realized she had it all wrong. Robin may have asked him to spend time with her but falling for her was all him.
“That’s not it” he started to shake his head but the look she gave him made him stop.
“Please, I can’t be hurt by you again. Let me go” and as Steve went to open his mouth and stop her again she was sliding the window close, clicking the lock, and shutting the curtains. He let out a defeated sigh as she completley shut him out and tears began to rim his eyes. He was angry and hurt for her. He thought he had changed but maybe he didn’t because if he did he would've given Beth a chance and not just now but on that first day of freshman year.
Carefully he made his way back down the canopy and onto the porch where he jogged to his car now that he was completley frozen through. Robin and Dustin looked at him curiously as he settled in his seat, cheeks red and bitten from the cold. He took a moment to absorb the heat, keeping his eyes forward because he was pretty sure he was about to cry and he didn't want them to see that. He didn't want to be pitied because this was his karma, he deserved it for being an asshole all of those years. He was no better than his father, Tommy, Carol, or the rest of the assholes at that school.
"Well, did you see her?" Robin questioned and Steve sighed, glancing out the window to blink away the tears that came to his eyes.
"She came to Family Video yesterday" he said but it didn’t occur to Robin as quickly as it did Steve.
"No she didn't we had a dead shift, we spent majority of it putting away tapes and talking" Robin argued but Steve finally turned and gave her a pointed look.
"And what were we talking about Robin?" again she looked confused but then it dawned on her, realization covering her features.
"She thinks I made you do it, and you were pretending" Robin said and Steve nodded as she buried her face in her hands.
"Do what?" Dustin asked from the back seat but he went ignored.
"She's upet because she thinks I was using her and she's upset that you put her in that position" Steve said rubbing his hands together to regain some warmth.
"Oh God, did you try to explain that it wasn't like that?" Robin asked, heart now aching because she truly was the reason her friend was hurt and now she was no better than all those other kids that had hurt Beth all these years.
"Yeah but she didn't want to hear it. She told me Colin admitted to having feelings for her, that he hated himself for feeling that way, and she told him that the reason we ended up together is because I got to know her without someone asking me too" as Robin gasped Dustin started to piece together what exactly they were talking about.
"Robin you made Steve hang out with Beth?" Dustin whispered and they both turned back to look at him, uneasy looks on their face.
"It wasn't like that, I wanted Steve to get to know her and I figured if people saw Steve with her they'd give her a break. We planned nothing else, we swear" Robin told him and Dustin fell back into the seat with an annoyed chuckle.
"She has every right to be mad you guys, you used her. Your intentions may have been good but what if Steve didn't like her, he was pretending the whole time, and she found that out. That is so shitty of both of you. Of you doing it to her and Steve for going along" Dustin said as he began the shake his head, now angry with both of them too.
"I didn't think of it like that when we first planned it" Robin said, tears now rimming her eyes as well because she broke her best friends heart. That was all her.
"You shouldn’t of planned anything, you could've just brought her to movie night with no plan in place and hoped for the best" Dustin said now looking out the window and away from either of them. He had warned Steve not to hurt her and he loved his friends but he began to love Beth too. Now he was going to lose her because all of them were idiots.
"Let's just give her space, maybe when she gets back we can reach out again and apologize" Steve said putting the car into reverse as Robin quietly cried in the front seat. He was trying not to cry himself, driving through blurry vision because he had hurt beth whether he intended to or not and now Dustin was mad at him.
"If it's any consolation Dustin I did fall for her, whether it was intentional or not" he said as he drove in the direction of his house and Dustin just grunted in response because he knew Steve was telling the truth but that didn't change what had happened.
After all how do you convince the girl who thought she could never be loved that you really did fall for her?

Eddie Redmayne Says 'Willkommen' to Broadway in First Production Photos from Cabaret Revival (Exclusive)
'The Good Nurse' actor is starring as the Emcee alongside Gayle Rankin as the musical's leading lady Sally Bowles
By Sabienna Bowman Published on April 15, 2024 02:30PM EDT

Eddie Redmayne is ready to put on a show in the first photos from Broadway's Cabaret revival!
In PEOPLE's exclusive first look at the famed John Kander and Fred Ebb musical's return to the Great White Way,The Good Nurse actor, 42, suits up at as Kit Kat Klub's mercurial Emcee. With his jaunty green party hat, oversized brown cravat and black gloves, Redmayne is both intriguing and imposing as the fascinating character.
In another snap of the Emcee in action, Redmayne leaps into the air as several members of the cast dance around him during the show's iconic opening number, "Willkommen."

Additional photos from the show shine the spotlight on House of the Dragon actress Gayle Rankin in the role of the vivacious nightclub singer Sally Bowles. In one compelling photo, she seems poised to take the stage with a microphone in hand as she's surrounded by ensemble members during the song, "Mein Herr."
Another picture finds Rankin in a ruffly white dress while holding a prop cigarette as she performs the song "Don’t Tell Mama."
The Cabaret revival is being directed by Rebecca Frecknall, who helmed the West End version, which also starred Redmayne. Previews began April 1 at the August Wilson Theatre in New York City, with the show set to officially open on April 21.

Cabaret has long been a success both on the stage and screen. Based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera, which in turn was adapted from the 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood, Cabaret first hit Broadway in 1966. It was later turned into the 1972 film of the same name starring Oscar-winner Liza Minnelli.
The musical tells the story of Sally, an ambitious English singer who starts up a relationship with American writer Clifford Bradshaw as he observes the eccentric characters who populate the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin. Set between World War I and World War II, the growing unrest beyond the club's doors is ever-present as the artists within express themselves through song.
It features a score by Kander & Ebb made up of a string of songs that have become musical theatre mainstays, like “Willkommen,” “Don't Tell Mamma,” “Mein Herr,” “Two Ladies,” “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” “Money,” “Maybe This Time” and, of course, “Cabaret.”
Jennifer Lopez Visits the Kit Kat Club for Broadway Revival of Cabaret (Exclusive)
Redmayne, who also produces the Broadway revival, has long said that Cabaret “properly ignited” his love for theater, while playing the Emcee in a student production of the musical over 25 years ago.
In an October 2023 statement, he shared, "It now feels completely thrilling and a little surreal to be a part of Rebecca's truly unique vision of Masteroff, Kander, and Ebb's brilliance as it arrives on Broadway, where the piece has such a history."
In addition to Redmayne and Rankin, the rest of the principle cast is rounded out by Ato Blankson-Wood (Clifford), Steven Skybell (Herr) and Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth (Fräulein), as well as Natascia Diaz (Fraulein Kost and Fritzie); and Henry Gottfried (Ernst Ludwig).
The cast also includes, Gabi Campo (Frenchie), Ayla Ciccone-Burton (Helga), Colin Cunliffe (Hans), Loren Lester (Herman/Max), David Merino (Lulu), Julian Ramos (Bobby), MiMi Scardulla (Texas), Paige Smallwood as Rosie, and Marty Lauter (Victor) — also known as Marcia Marcia Marcia of RuPaul's Drag Race fame.
Tickets for Cabaret are on sale now.

Arozarena's HR Helps Rays Take Series.
Rays 5 Twins 4 W-Kelly (5-2) L-Jax (6-10) SV-Stephenson (1)
The Minnesota Twins stole a game from the Rays last night to even the series. The rubber game was this afternoon at Target Field. The Rays struck first in the second inning as Curtis Mead led-off with a triple to right. Oslevis Basabe knocked in a run on an RBI groundout and Chrstian Bethancourt singled to right. With two outs, Yandy Diaz drove in a pair with a double to left and the Rays led by three after two frames. Tampa Bay got back to work in the third as Isaac Paredes walked and Curtis Mead doubled him home. This gave the Rays a four-run lead and the Twins would answer in the bottom of the third. Matt Wallner smacked a Taj Bradley fastball out to center for a solo homer. Kyle Farmer followed with a blast off a Bradley cutter and the back-to-back jacks got the Twins within a pair. The Twins would rally again in the fifth when Eddie Julien and Jorge Polanco drew one-out walks. Max Kepler drove in two with a triple to right to even the game at four apiece. The bullpens held serve until the ninth when Griffin Jax entered the game. Randy Arozarena smoked a slider out to left for a solo homer as the Rays took the lead. Colin Poche got the first two outs of the ninth and the Twins got pinch-runner Andrew Stevenson to second base. Robert Stephenson came on and struck out Christian Vazquez to end the game. The Rays took the series from the Twins on a beautiful day.
-Final Thoughts- Dallas Keuchel wasn't sharp and the Rays knocked him around a bit. He went four innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Dylan Floro got out of Keuchel's mess in the fifth, Emilio Pagan threw two shutout innings, and Caleb Thielbar fanned two in a perfect eighth. Griffin Jax gave up the game-winning homer to Arozarena in the ninth. The Twins scattered five hitsand hit 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. They left six men on base. Jorge Polanco was activated off the bereavement list and Gilberto Celestino was optioned back to St. Paul. The team heads out on a seven-game road trip starting in Chicago. Kenta Maeda will start against the White Sox tomorrow night.

I just read A Crumpled Up Piece of Paper, and I'm obsessed. Can I ask, what are the ages for the other Bridgerton siblings here? Because if Hyacinth is the canon 18 years younger, that puts her at just a year or two older than Ned. Also, does Edmund go into his meeting/relationship with Anthony believing what Kate told him in this chapter? That his Dad doesn't want to meet him?
I’m kind of very surprised by the reaction this new AU has gotten tbh!
Okay So here are some character ages
Anthony- 33
Kate- 32
Edmund - 13
Benedict- 30
Colin- 28
Daphne- 26
Eloise- 24
Francesca-23
Gregory- 18
Hyacinth 16
Edwina-27
So Kate and Edmund have a big conversation after they meet Violet. Edmund knows that Anthony doesn’t really know that he exists, and Kate explains that she’s going to go and explain to Anthony.
“Sweetheart there’s a chance that he might not want to see you. Things were really complicated between us when she split up.”
And Kate’s heart breaks when Edmund looks up at her with tears in his eyes and his voice wobbling. “If he wants to see me, can I see him?”
“If that’s what you want of course you can.”
“Can You be there? And maybe Aunt Eddie and Grandma Mary?”
And Kate doesn’t know what to do but nod.
And she knows what’s going to be waiting for her when She comes home from Anthony’s office, exhausted and trying desperately not to cry. Edmund, pretending not to be excited about the news he might hear.
“Neddy, I spoke to your father today, and if you want to, he wants to meet you tomorrow.” And Edmund’s grin makes all of the awkwardness she’s just gone through worth it. She just hopes that Anthony doesn’t disappoint him.

Okay oscar nominations tomorrow! I’m writing down my predictions for above-the-line categories based on precursors, other people’s predictions, educated guessing, hopedicting and pure vibes:
BEST PICTURE
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once
2. The Fabelmans
3. The Banshees of Inisherin
4. TAR
5. Elvis
6. Avatar: The Way of Water
7. Top Gun: Maverick
8. All Quiet on the Western Front
9. The Whale
10. Triangle of Sadness
The last two are toss-ups. Babylon, The Woman King, Black Panther 2, Women Talking and Aftersun are also possibilities
BEST DIRECTOR
1. Daniels (EEAAO)
2. Spielberg (The Fabelmans)
3. Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Todd Field (TAR)
5. Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front)
I’m not certain about the last spot but looks like a typical all-male line-up regardless
BEST ACTOR
1. Brendan Fraser (The Whale)
2. Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Austin Butler (Elvis)
4. Bill Nighy (Living)
5. Adam Sandler (Hustle)
The 5th spot is a complete mystery. I’m personally hoping for Paul Mescal but i could also see Tom Cruise or even Tom Hanks or Hugh Jackman. Putting Sandler because he made it to SAG and i think it would be funny
BEST ACTRESS
1. Cate Blanchett (TAR)
2. Michelle Yeoh (EEAAO)
3. Danielle Deadwyler (Till)
4. Viola Davis (The Woman king)
5. Ana de Armas (Blonde)
I think there’s a good chance de Armas gets in despite the movie being very controversial. If not her it’s Michelle Williams. I refuse to believe Andrea Riseborough’s blitzkrieg oscar campaign worked
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
1. Ke Huy Quan (EEAAO)
2. Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Barry Keoghan (The Banshees of Inisherin)
4. Paul Dano (The Fabelmans)
5. Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse)
Quan is on unprecedented level of locked to win. I’m very unsure about the last two spots. Out of nowhere David Lynch nomination would be fun
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
1. Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever )
2. Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin)
3. Hong Chau (The Whale)
4. Jamie Lee Curtis (EEAAO)
5. Stephanie Hsu (EEAAO)
If only one the EEAAO ladies gets in it’s sadly going to be Curtis over Hsu because the academy loves veteran actors with narratives, but i’m hoping they both can get in
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
1. Women Talking
2. The Whale
3. Glass Onion
4. All Quiet on the Western Front
5. Living
My unrealistic dream would be The Batman getting nominated here
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
1. TAR
2. The Banshees of Inisherin
3. Everything Everywhere All At Once
4. The Fabelmans
5. Aftersun
Triangle of Sadness i think is actually more likely for the 5th spot but i loved Aftersun so much i’m trying to will this nom into existence
#if you're new here you should know i go nuts during the award season it's my real most embarrassing interest#keanu.txt#awards talk

for the ask game you reblogged - 10 for four weddings and no funeral? 3 and 4 for and it all comes down to you? 1 and 2 for tomorrow never knows? :)
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
okay so, the plot inspiration for four weddings and no funeral came from a reddit thread about how colin's waistcoat in the episode "no weddings and a funeral" might have been inspired by simon callow's character, who wears many glorious waistcoats over the course of four weddings and a funeral (last version of this title i'll type, i swear). my brain upon learning that immediately went "wedding fic! a relationship progression across other peoples' special days!" but i wasn't sure what colin pairing i wanted for it. around that same time, i was following the fic "things you can't unsay" by manuronaldo, which began as a gen colin & jamie fic but had started heading towards romance. i then had that very dangerous writerly thought: "let me put a scene down and see if it goes anywhere......" and here we are! i think the plot just really works with jamie in a way it wouldn't have worked with another afc richmond player and colin, especially given where jamie is at by the end of S2 and seems ready for a healthier romantic relationship post-telling keeley he loves her while accepting she's moved on. jamie is also just a veeeery fun pov to write from. i love that bastard (affectionate)
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
"Or maybe, just maybe, they’re two teenagers holding hands on a bed, in a suburban house, on a quiet street, within a small town, and the universe is bored of them." just about sums up everything i want for steve and eddie. let them rest!
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
i have decided to cheat and give two... fun line: "You’re the most badass woman I’ve ever beheld and when this is over, I think we should platonically have 2.5 babies who will one day take over the world." not fun line: "Steve can’t tell me what to do. He’s dead."
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
ranting in your dms definitely inspired a huge chunk of tomorrow never knows! i just couldn't stop thinking about how fucked up it would be on the other side of a time loop, having to watch someone you care about die (and sometimes at their own hand) and having to trust their word for it that it's okay, everything will reset with their death. and it would be particularly brutal for steve harrington, mr. protector of the universe. i was definitely worried the fic would get very repetitive very fast, so when structuring it, i tried to make sure a good portion of the scenes weren't also in "and it all comes down to you" and that we still get to see steve growing into his feelings for eddie and reckoning with his concept of heroism (it isn't just someone who dies! or comes precariously close to it!)
2: What scene did you first put down?
the back half of loop 81! specifically this: “What if—” “…this is the last time,” Eddie says with a weary sigh. How many times has Steve delivered the same line, how many times has Eddie stolen it from him to reach the inevitable end faster. “You say that every time.” Trapped in his throat is something tough and thorny. His voice comes out scratched when he asks, “Am I always so predictable?” “Yeah.” Eddie smiles, a touch rueful. “It’s the best.” my little hat nod to palm springs, a superior time loop film. i wrote this at the breakfast table while on vacation with my family lol
put one of a fic title in my ask + questions about it
#my apologies friends romans countrymen for how long this answer got#any excuse to talk about colin hughes and jamie/colin and time loops#thank you for the q's casey!!#ask#my writing

A/N:Let’s just say I’m obsessed with Eddie
Warnings: fluff? Jealousy? Mention of drugs and swearing
SUMMARY: JEALOUS! Y/N IS LEAVING, SHE TRIES TO CONVINCE EDDIE TO STAY BEDORE SHE LEAVES THE FOLLOWING DAY
Respectfully, I am proud to be Eddie’s girlfriend, he is everything I need, a dealer, a supplier, someone to talk to outside of school. He basically is my walking cart, he says he loves to hold my stuff and keep some of my stuff when he misses me which makes me love him even more, but the one thing I hate about Eddie is that he plays the stupidest fucking game in the world called Dungeons and Dragons and it’s nerd shit, like it can go on all day if they really wanted too, it’s boring and lame and boring
“Eddie can you just stay home?” You begged “uh uh baby, tonight EVERYONE is gonna be there and I need to get Lucas, Brian, and Colin filled in to what happened while they were gone” he said throwing on his “HellFire” shirt that I loved wearing after a good fuck (kill me😞)
“But baby tomorrow I won’t be here and I want to spend time with you” I whined hoping my persuading skills were working on his blank expression, he just stood there I am assuming thinking about if he should leave
“I mean this campaign is kinda…” he trailed off, me getting the hint
“fine, leave I don’t care, but if you don’t see me when you get back I hope you regret it” I said throwing my hands up and turning over in his bed obviously internally hoping he would change his mind
I heard him sigh very loudly then hearing the door open then close, I then heard the car speed away making my throughly start to ache and tears brimming my eyes, ‘I thought he would choose me over some stupid game’ I thought starting to sniffle “so much for love” I whispered out to no one
A while late I decided that I should just leave and talk to him when I get back from california, I began to pick up my things and open the door only to see Eddie walking up to the door with a cute white teddy bear with a heart in the middle, Y/F/F (your favorite flowers), and a card
“oh I thought you went to the Dungeons and Dragons thingy” I said trying not to look at the beautiful gifts that he obviously bought for me
“Oh yeah, I was but then I felt bad that I wasn’t spending time with my loving beautiful kind girlfriend before she left to someplace across the country” he smirked closing the door behind him
“Who are those for?” I asked playing dumb
“Uh, i think they are for my loving beautiful kind girlfriend” he said going along with me
“Oh who is she?” I smirked waiting to here what amusing thing he would say
“My dog” he laughed then hugged me tightly “oh” I said frowning he chuckled making my heart beat a bit faster
“nah, I don’t even have a dog so I guess the only other loving beautiful kind girlfriend is…” he released himself from the hug and got on one knee
“…you” he smiled handing me the cute gifts which caused me to hug him squishing the gifts
“I love you so much Eddie” I mumbled into his neck “I love you 3000” he whispered into my ear “but before we y’know get into it, read the card” he smiled handing you the card once you let go of him
And this is what the card said:
Y/N, I know leaving to go to play the stupidest game in the world breaks your heart just a little since I choose to go to that over spending every second with you, and it breaks my heart a little knowing that is how you feel, and so since your loving boyfriend (soon to be husband and father to our kids) I want to make your last day with me for a few months the last day you’ll remember about me until we meet again, I love you more than my mom, dad, and uncle, and weed, I love you more than sir, seriously, so since you read my lousy handwriting and I hope correctly punctuated sentences, I want you to know I do love you and I want you too feel like I love you (which I do)
Eddie
I didn’t even have words to say all I could do was kiss him, and hug him
“I hope you liked the card it was fucking 5 dollars” he groaned hugging you tighter
“but every penny was worth it knowing you were the one to receive it” he smiled kissing you again
“I don’t wanna go to california anymore” I cried into his shoulder “I wanna stay with you” I cried even louder hugging him tighter (btw we is on the floor forgot to clarify, you is in his lap hugging him, legs on both sides of him, just letting you picture this in the way I am)
“I know sweetheart, I know” he said rocking me back in forth “but hey, if I make enough money I can visit you before you come back” he said trying to make me feel better “you will?” I asked looking up at him with wide teary eyes, which only made Eddie want to fuck you even more “yeah” he simply said standing up still holding you well carrying you now
“I don’t think I could last 4 months without you anyways” he chuckled making you smile wildly but still crying
“Me neither” I giggled “but let’s make your remaining 10 hours count” he smiled an evil smirk
A/N: how was it? I feel like it was rushed but whateves, hope you enjoyed besties

Sinking. Iris was sinking.
She heard a soft moan as she leaned into him, his tongue sweeping across her full lower lip, and she honestly didn’t know if the sound had come from his throat or her own. She lifted her hands to his neck, cupping him gently as she shifted position, drawing him down to her.
Iris had exchanged so many kisses in her life, some more memorable than others. She remembered the day her little brother was born, and she pressed a shy and awkward kiss to the top of his head, his skin feeling wrinkly and new, impossibly soft beneath her lips. She remembered the night she kissed her mother goodbye moments before she slipped away, her body ravaged by the illness that had taken her from the daughter that still needed her.
Her first “real” kiss had been in sixth grade, with a boy in her class that she’d had a crush on until that moment. She had been pretty and popular, and so everyone had assumed that she’d had many boyfriends, exchanged many kisses in secret. She wasn’t the type to either confirm or deny – then or now – and so nobody knew that the traits that made her so desired – so envied – intimidated many and kept her at an arm’s distance from those around her. After he stole her first kiss, Colin admitted that the act had been a dare. To kiss the most popular girl in school, one that his friends had bragged that they had kissed before. Iris hadn’t told him that his friends were liars, but she’d used the skills her father taught her to teach him a lesson about consent that he wouldn’t soon forget.
Her last kiss had been with Eddie, the night before as he tried to convince her to give their sham relationship another shot. It hadn’t been a kiss of passion or desire, but of friendship and understanding. She and Eddie might not love each other, but they did understand each other. Their kisses, usually exchanged for the benefit of the camera, lacked the spark of passion, but they were familiar and comforting. Like the kisses she exchanged with countless fellow models on countless photoshoots, Eddie’s kisses would never break her heart. Somewhere between Colin and Eddie had been one man who had, the only man she’d ever loved. The only man who had shattered her when he’d walked away.
With a gasp, Iris pulled back, breaking off the kiss as she tried to push the memory of her lost love away. Why should he come to mind now? Barry posed no threat to her heart. She told herself that the passion between them now would fizzle and die. She didn’t expect Barry to stick around forever. She didn’t even want him to. In the end, she’d be content with friendship. So why did their kisses seem like they could be so much more?
A tiny frown flickered across his face as he lifted one hand to brush the back of his fingertips across her cheek. “Iris? Is everything okay?”
She nodded, longing to close the distance between them and renew their embrace, even as part of her screamed to push him away. “Yes, of course,” she murmured. “It’s just…when we kiss, it feels like…”
When her voice trailed off, he threw her an uncertain smile. “Like what?” he asked gently.
Like she’d spent her whole life waiting to kiss him.
Before she could find an easy lie, Eddie stuck his head around the corner. “Hey, sorry to interrupt, but I thought Iris should know her phone keeps going off. Looks like Linda’s trying to get a hold of you.”
Though she felt like she was saved by the bell, she forced a grimace and feigned reluctance as she backed away. “I should take this. I’d hate for Linda to worry…”
“Yeah, no problem,” he agreed, dropping his hands to his sides. But she could fell his eyes on her as she turned and all but fled from the room. A part of her wanted to stay, and that scared her more than she wanted to admit.
Iris spent the rest of the day trying to find perfectly valid reasons to avoid Barry. For his part, he focused on reviewing the security system she had in place, looking for dead zones and blind spots. She tried to convince herself that it was sheer coincidence that he occupied himself with activities that would keep him out of her way. Then she remembered how quickly he’d assessed her upon their first meeting, and she knew he probably caught on to more than she’d like.
The sun was low in the sky when she ran out of busy work to keep her out of his way and leaned back in her chair with a sigh. She couldn’t avoid him forever, but she wasn’t sure what to say to him. She’d come on strong, so it would take some doing to explain why being in his arms earlier that day, she’d suddenly felt afraid that he posed a much greater threat to her heart than she’d first believed. She was no longer certain they could have a no-strings attached fling she’d proposed the night before and wondered if, with Barry, she was playing a game with higher stakes than she was willing to pay.
Iris tossed aside the book she’d been pretending to read for the past hour and rose to her feet. The house had long been quiet, but she had still been painfully aware of Barry’s every move over the past few hours. She didn’t even hesitate as she headed outside, towards the pool.
The concrete was cool against her bare feet as she stepped outside, slowly approaching the lounge where Barry was relaxing. Her footsteps were all but completely silent as she crept towards the pool. Still, she wasn’t surprised when he turned to watch her approach. Knowing where she was at all times was basically his job, though she suspected there was more to it than that.
His gaze was shuttered and he didn’t speak as he watched her approach. His eyes were locked on hers as he picked up his drink and took a long sip, lifting his eyebrows at her over the lip of the glass. She wanted to tell him she was sorry, but if he asked her the reason for her apology, she wasn’t sure what she’d say.
She stifled a sigh as her gaze swept along his body. His long legs, which were surprisingly graceful for a man of his height. A white t-shirt stretched across his torso, and she longed the stroke the hard muscles she knew lay underneath. She knew personally how strong his arms were, where they were crossed over his chest. And the small smile that lurked at the side of his mouth – that mouth she wanted to kiss – well…that was the most lethal of all.
As she watched, the corner of that mouth gave in to the smile that lurked beneath, quirking slightly upward as his head shifted to the side. She met his questioning gaze with her own, though she didn’t have any answers for him. What did she want? She didn’t know.
No. That wasn’t entirely true. She might not be sure what she wanted tomorrow, but she was completely certain of what she wanted tonight. Tonight, she wanted him.
Did she dare give in to her desire? She ran her fingers along the bottom hem of her shirt as she considered what she should do next. Maybe she was giving Barry – and herself – too little credit. They were both adults. Surely they could give in to a night of pleasure without mistaking it for something more. One night with him didn’t have to bring with it a promise of a future. It could just be one night.
Latching on to the idea, ignoring the fact it sounded a little too close to self-justification, even to her, she pulled her shirt over her head, tossing it to the ground. In one smooth gesture, her bra followed. She watched Barry stiffen slightly, but he didn’t move. He just continued to watch her with those eyes that saw too much, letting her set the pace for what was to come.
Pushing aside her fear, Iris let herself revel in the moment. Cocking her head to the side, she fingered the button of her blue jeans. He watched her every move like a hawk watching its prey. Slowly, teasingly, she unbuttoned the snap and pushed her blue jeans down her thighs.
As the coarse fabric pooled on the ground around her, Iris sent up a silent prayer that her feet wouldn’t get tangled in her jeans and she’d manage to step out of them without tripping and killing herself. When she saw the corners of his mouth twitch, she knew he’d read her mind, but she managed to step out of her jeans without making a total fool of herself.
To get him back for his amusement at her expense, Iris hooked her thumbs under the line of her panties, drawing them down her legs with torturous slowness. When she saw a muscle in Barry’s jaw clench and unclench repeatedly and heard his breathing grow shallow, she grinned at her victory. She suspected an entire brass band could pass by and he’d be none the wiser, his attention focused so completely upon her.
Iris didn’t suffer from false modesty. She knew she was beautiful; it was in the job description. She knew what it felt like to be desired; she knew how to manipulate that desire to suit her ends. But the way Barry was looking at her made her heart pound, making her feel off-balance in a way she hadn’t felt in years. If ever.
Pushing that thought aside, she strode toward him, her smile coy as she straddled him in his chair. When he opened his mouth to speak, she pressed a finger against his lips, giving her head a small shake. They could talk tomorrow, if necessary. She didn’t want to spoil this moment between them with words.
If he was bemused by her silent directive, he hid it well as Iris grabbed the bottom of his shirt and yanked it over his head, impatience removing the grace from her movements. Iris let out a sigh of pleasure as she ran her hands down his chest, tracing the curve of muscles that had only been hinted at under his clothes at their first meeting. Barry leaned forward to kiss her, but she tilted back, out of his reach. She was calling the shots here, and she needed to remember that this was about physical pleasure. Not romance. His kisses were intoxicating, making that easy to forget.
Though she could read the disappointment in his eyes, he didn’t protest as he leaned back in his chair, letting her decide what would happen next. Iris threw him an approving smile as she reached for the button of his pants, rewarding his patience by stroking him through the fabric before reaching her hand inside.
Barry groaned as she wrapped her hand around him, running her fingers along his shaft in firm, steady strokes. His moan deepened when, frustrated by the awkward angle caused by his waistband, she unclasped his jeans and pulled him out.
He lifted his hands, causing her to freeze and throw him a warning look, but he met her eyes unflinchingly, his palms out to her in a placating gesture. Moving slowly, as though concerned he would scare her off otherwise, Barry shifted his hands to her hips, helping brace her as she lifted herself onto him.
His hands caressed the her waist, sliding along her thighs and slipping between their bodies. When she moved on top of him, his fingers slipped inside her, making her gasp when he stroked her clit. Iris gasped, grabbing his wrist in a silent plea for him to stop, afraid she was on the verge of losing her control over him. Her control over herself.
His laughter was strained when he chuckled, his hand stilling until she released him. Then he brought his hand to his mouth, his smile wicked as he flicked his tongue against his fingers, tasting her against his skin. Grabbing his wrist, Iris pinned it next to his head as she rolled her hips against him, making him gasp. With her other hand, she dug her fingers into his shoulders, arching her back as she rode him. He continued to steady her with his free hand, and she leaned in towards him.
Barry owed his head and ran his tongue along the curve of her breast, sucking her nipple into his mouth and teasing it with his teeth. Now it was Iris’s turn to moan, and she didn’t protest when he moved his hand from her thigh to the small of her back, steadying her as he worshipped her with his mouth. His tongue was hot against her skin, but his following breath caused her to shiver.
Iris had planned to tease him a little longer, but she wasn’t sure how much longer she could maintain control. Her breath hissed between her teeth when she released his wrist and braced both hands on his shoulders, steadying herself as she increased her rhythm against him. Her moans matched his own when she felt him shudder against her, his hand sliding inside her as he helped bring her to climax. His name was a breath on her lips as she came, trembling against him, but the sound was swallowed by his kiss. Though when she finally caught her breath, wrapped up in his arms on the poolside lounge, her weight braced against his chest, she didn’t know whether he had initiated the kiss, or whether she had herself.
She tried not to think about what that uncertainty might mean.

‘Split Enz On The Road’ story written for ‘Rip It Up’ magazine by lighting director, Raewyn Turner. Circa 1982.
“SPLIT ENZ – ON THE ROAD STORY
Raewyn Turner has been lighting director for Split Enz since 1975. She painted the cover for Frenzy and last year at Dennis Cohn Gallery exhibited drawings in her show entitled ‘On The Road Again’. Raewyn has written for Rip It Up, about behind-the-scenes- staging the 1982 Time And Tide tour of New Zealand.
Six months in a leaky boat and that story nears its end for the second time in two years, as Split Enz round the bend on their last lap of touring, finishing in New Zealand. The past five months have been a variety show, the star hosts mingle with us, briefly, from their conveyer belts, flanked by the extras who are directed to have walk-on and bit parts for the day. The many famed and fabled buildings and cities roll on the big rollers past the car windows, and lots of people pass us, in a hurry, to and fro, people with different accents, different smiles, clothes, lifestyles. While we sit and stand, walk and work, moving from car to aeroplane, airport to motel to theatre, the big rollers roll in the world’s projection room, on to the screens, which are our windows.
Split Enz, the audience, the judge, in the van with the video sensurround windows. The selection committee. In a chartered plane, seated in rows until a kind man appears and opens the exit door, ushering us into another windows room. We sit there, breathing in the muted greens and browns and admiring the blue sky, until we’re told to get out and into another room, where soft musak whispers that life is a breeze. Water flows from taps, milk is instant non-dairy whitener, food is but a phone call and an hour’s wait away, all-night television to lull to sleep, air comes from an air conditioner.
10.00 am on Monday, August 16 in Melbourne, and the band are making a film clip, ‘Never Ceases To Amaze Me’, that Noel has worked out with the director over long phone calls from Darwin. It doesn’t finish until 6.00 pm. Last night at the same time, the band had just come off stage, completing the last date of their Australian tour, an ‘Under-18s’ show in Melbourne.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 17
Melbourne, 7.00 am. Grant Thomas, the tour manager, dutifully makes wake-up calls and in six homes scattered over Melbourne, the entourage is busily preparing and packing to make the flight, leaving at 10.00 am to Auckland. 9.00 am we’re at the airport, tired and grizzly, only to learn that the plane has been delayed for five and a half hours. Back home for some more sleep, while the road crew opt to stay at the airport and busy themselves making badges to display their membership of an exclusive social club – the crew’s very own ‘Split Enz Sports And Social Club’ – crew only.
The same day, 10.30 pm, ‘arrive Auckland and proceed to Hamilton, going by the itinerary. Oops. Noel has left his bag at the airport, so we have to double back. Check into hotel, and the band settle for some sleep while I go down to the Founders Theatre to set up for the first show of the NZ tour. The stage set, which has some technical peculiarities, has to be explained and put up and the special effects projectors babied out of their case and wheeled around. Although the lighting plot was sent over a month in advance, the rigging, cabling and colouring of lamps takes forever on the first set up, so we do all but focus tonight. 6.00 am we call it quits and go back to the hotel for a few hours’ sleep. Laurie Bell, the production manager works on, there are many details to be taken care of before the stage and sound people begin work at 9.00 am.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18
Sound check is early, everyone expecs the first show to be difficult because of the new, unfamiliar NZ equipment – PA, foldback and lights. The Finn elders arrive, Finn cousins playing with the beach balls backstage.
The dressing room is newly painted and most of the band find they have severe headaches the next day. But battle dress donned, they take the stage with enthusiasm and anticipation, because it’s great to be on home soil. The audience is quiet, polite and serious. It’s been a whole year since Split Enz toured NZ and they’re playing new material, working hard. There are a few technical difficulties, but only minor ones. Back to the hotel for some hot chocolate with friends, before retiring.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 19
1.30 pm. Wake up, and Eddie and I go down to the theatre to work on improving our computer programmes (Eddie’s synthesisers are digitally controlled and store many different sounds in computer memories). Computers and synthesisers are relatively new developments and computers, like humans, were not designed for the rigours of the road. Just as Eddie wanders around his hotel, wondering where he is and what he is doing there, these computers become similarly vacant and he is often to be found in a state of panic, trying to reprogramme his sounds minutes before a show. The lighting desk computer is but 120 channels of memories which can be reprogrammed for particular lighting scenes or progressions of lighting changes. However, it too has a habit of becoming vacant, or worse, storing more than its share, which means it could reveal the total lighting show at the press of one memory button.
The sound crew have been working all day, trying ti iron out the creases in last night’s sound.
Ed and Noel go off for a walk into town, looking for water pistols. The Ed Water Pistol Collection has swelled to number 120 over three years.
Soundcheck, dinner – Noel enthuses over the six veges – back to the paintstricken dressing room an hour before the show, to put on the ‘cossies’ (costumes), paint the faces, discuss song lists, tell a few jokes, wet the whistle (or sip a lemonade), do armstretches and leg raises, eat some peanuts or whatever is offering in snacks. The show goes ‘averagely well’ (probably ‘very good’ in another’s words), but we have our own rating system.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 20
6.00 am, get up and drive to Auckland. The car breaks down on the way, but is fixed by a kind mechanic, free of charge. We feel that this could only happen in NZ. The production crew have been waiting outside the Logan Campbell Centre since 8.00 am, but the truck doesn’t arrive till 10. They begin work frantically and irritably, but still able to make light-hearted jokes, and the stage set slowly appears.
Meanwhile, Noel has gone to visit his folks. Tim and Neil arrive in Auckland with theirs, to spend the day together. Nigel, being the most boring (he is aware of the fact) member of the band, has experienced nothing of any interest whatsoever since arriving in NZ, not on this day, except for a sleepy interview with Colin Hogg. Eddie visits his sister and his friend Paul Crowther and they spend the rest of the day babbling about synths.
Backstage in the dressing room the champagne arrives – a greeting from the record company. The band have another of their ‘average’ performances, the crowd was ecstatic but the band are tired. The sound men aren’t feeling happy, so they make plans to spend all day tomorrow on improvements, to further dampen the echoes.
Back to the White Heron, now affectionately known as the Red Herring (no offence meant), for a few drinks with friends in the Carriage Bar. This is the first piece of glamorous living I’ve experienced for about a month or more – other people might call it just having a drink – but it means a lot being able to have the luxury of changing from work clothes to casual and being with friends.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 21
1.30 pm. Wake up and with Noel and Eddie go to Parnell Village where we have breakfast with Noel’s folks, who are in Auckland for both shows. A flying visit to a friend strapped in traction in hospital and it’s on to soundcheck and an early show.
Nigel has spent the day sleeping, jigging and walking, his three favourite pursuits. Neil and Tim are having dinner with their folks at the table over from us. They bribe the resident pianist into playing ‘Feelings’ as an after-dinner tribute to the band. (This song was on the top of the list for singing at the top of one’s voice while bumping along in a van through North America.)
SUNDAY, AUGUST 22
9.00 am. Depart the hotel for the airport, 9.55 flight departs Auckland for Palmerston North, without breakfast.
Tim feels detached from everything, and so opts for the hair-of-the-dog treatment, which will see him through until the end of the performance. The drinks backstage in the dressing room are there to be a starter motor, to kick a tired man into action. It’s an early show again, and it feels good to commence the performance about an hour after soundcheck. It’s still early enough to relax afterwards over dinner and watching TV.
MONDAY, AUGUST 23
10.30 am. Bags are being loaded into five cars, room bills are being paid, and we’re off to Christchurch. It’s a day off, everyone is anticipating what they’ll do, and probably they’ll do nothing. We’ve taken all the back seats in the plane and Ian Magan’s (tour promoter) Air New Zealand voice (fondly remembering “Ladies and gentleman, have you seen this?” on flights to London) booms from three seats away. Tonight he has promised the entourage a free dinner.
Eddie and I miss the free dinner – we’ve been invited to his brother’s house. This is one of the advantages of this job – seeing family and friends in all corners of the world at least once a year – where distance and fares would normally prohibit this. The visits are, however, usually too short and sweet.
The band enthuse over the selection of old cars in ‘perfect condition’ being driven around Christchurch, reeling off the makes as we drive around. Austin, Morris, Zephyr, Vanguard… Tim’s been after a Studebaker and is delighted to hear that people in the entourage have spotted three so far. Back home the Split Enz Club boasts a green FJ Holden (Neil’s), a black Mark II Zephyr (Tim’s), a pink Morris Major Elite 1963 (Eddie’s), a 1950 Black Triumph Renown (Noel’s) and a brown 1954 Fiat station wagon (Nigel’s).
Today Noel went shopping and got the costumes drycleaned. Nigel went for a five-hour walk along the Avon, Neil joined the road crew for a trip to the snow, there they used big plastic rubbish bags for sliding down hills and threw snow at each other.
Tim stayed in and did an interview, then cruised around, went for a walk, I think. Ed, Clark Flannigan (Polygram Records’ man on tour) and I finally got ourselves away from the hotel and went swimming at the QEII pool. It’s the first day of the school holidays and Ed and Clark get swallowed up in the crowds queuing for the hydrotubes. Clark can do 50m overarm in 35 seconds, he tries out the high diving board, but Ed and I only manage the lowest. End of day off.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 24
7.00 am. Get up, shower and down to the Christchurch Town Hall by 8.00 am. It’s a beautiful day, warm with blue, blue skies, the smell of blossom, cold air and woodsmoke, peculiar to NZ.
The stage set is constructed quickly and looks good. I’d anticipated, with sinking stomach feelings, that as far as equipment and organisation of technical details go, the NZ section would be the worst and most difficult of this six-month tour (probably because it has previously been that). However, there have been vast improvements made in the expertise of the hired technical personnel and in the equipment to be found here since we toured last year. It has taken a lot of hard work to elevate it to this level, and although the equipment is different to the systems currently available in Australia, this in no way makes for a compromise situation.
At 10.30 am, I offer to get the food – three dozen donuts, one dozen cream buns, three dozen filled rolls, a bag of apples. We work on until 4.00 pm and soundcheck is at 4.30. After a while, the band drift into playing their oldies, searching for the perfect replacement for ‘Hard Act’, which they’re sick of.
The band are tired. After five months of constant touring and only two weeks off in the period – no weekends – they are finding it hellish to think clearly and with enthusiasm about their shows. They want to try a new set, a different way of playing particular songs, but the energy somehow keeps being channelled the same way. They shone for the Auckland shows and will probably shine for the rest, but they try to break out of their feelings of exhaustion and automatic gear.
Tonight’s performance is once again good, although lacking the fire that the band are striving hard to produce. The audience is enthusiastic. The band and crew and managers return to the hotel bar, where we tell each other jokes until the small hours, winding down for sleep after a long day.
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 25
8.00 am. Woken by chainsaws, jackhammers and the noise of concrete being made in a wheelbarrow. These are quite regular occurrences in hotels where we have stayed, so I drift back to sleep. But Eddie has had enough and has decided to move over to the posh hotel, where Tim and Neil have recently moved, to escape the noise. The hotel is twice the price and offers a complimentary morning newspaper, but we prefer the squat NZ motels, having spent too long in high-rise hotels, with Coffee-Mate (powdered non-dairy whitener) for ea milk.
Soundcheck at 4.30, still the search for the perfect song replacement. ‘In The Wars’, ‘Jamboree’, ‘Under The Wheel’ and a few others are fiddled with and discarded.
Tim, Neil, Eddie and I drive off for dinner and discuss our fatigue and the artistic value (or not) of the song produced under pressure of having to be sold by a record company. The issue of touring arises and they talk about giving it up in Australia and NZ for two years, except for the occasional ‘spectacular’ – an alternative that would provide opportunity for lots of ideas to be exercised. Or perhaps they’d like to do a film, taking a year off to make it and write songs, using that period to develop their musical ability as individuals.
Showtime, the crew are lying around on couches drinking coffee and the first band are pounding away. Eddie is in the dressing room playing his other favourite song, ‘Loving You’ by Minnie Ripperton, accompanied by Neil singing. He breaks away into Chopin.
THURSDAY, AUGUST 26
A day off for some, but the three lighting technicians leave Christchurch at 9.00 am and arrive at Invercargill at 7.00 pm. (The truck has a sleep and they take turns at driving.) The rest of the crew fly down at 11.00 am and spend the rest of the day in the hotel’s spa pool. At 8.00 pm, Laurie, Glen (the set and projects man) and three loaders unpack the truck, having first to remove a fleet of five city council vans that were parked across the stage door. Glen gets to work putting up the stage set and is back at the hotel by 11.00 pm.
Tim, Neil, Clark, Eddie and I have made plans to drive to Akaroa for some fish and chips and scenery, but Eddie and I spend until 2.00 pm buying second-hand furniture for future use, by which time Clark isn’t to be found. The free day has just about slipped away. We make rearrangements with the cars and Tim and Neil go to Akaroa. Noel, Eddie and I take a drive that meanders along a peninsula beyond Lyttleton, and we end up driving along a tractor path up a mountainside. The green pastures, trees in blossom, the mountain and valleys, we can’t wait to settle back here and enjoy the countryside. Tim and Neil return with tales of spectacular scenery, quite in awe of the beauty of the countryside. Neil, in surprise, says it’s always so much better than he’s remembered. Of course, all this talk about ‘nature’ crops up in our conversations especially after a few months on the road, staying in orange and purple hotel rooms. At the same time, the touring lifestyle has another advantage – it provides the blinkers and forces a total commitment to work.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 27
9.00 am. Wake up call from Grant, we move quickly and tiredly into the day.
Arrive Invercargill and greeted by an over-officious officer on the sidewalk at the airport. Magan has an argument with him and Neil throws him a coin as we drive away. Later, Magan receives a speeding ticket from the same officer.
Stop off on the way to the hotel, at the art gallery for a typical photo of the band posing next to a huge anchor for the local papers.
I go straight to work. The crew, having become accustomed to the equipment, are working very fast these days and focus is early. The set works well in the Civic Centre, because the tiers of balconies tower over the stage, which is shallow and therefore the sail has a steep incline. I don’t have a good show, getting my fingers jammed in the faders, despite a grand performance by the projector operators, Glen and Keith, who are by now quite skilled.
Noel apparently just about falls backwards off his drums, fatigued and the rest of the band are tired. But there are only 11 more shows to do, so they attack each one with enthusiasm.
After the show, the musos’ club is less than hospitable, hassling the band at the door. Eddie, Tim and Neil leave and end up helping Magan, who is hosting a three-hour radio show.
The road crew have busily packed clean socks for the Saturday soundcheck before heading off to Queenstown in search of the thrillseeker jetboats. Bed.
Part two of this feature will appear in next months ‘R.I.U’.”

Kitten was incredible!
Totally got their tension spot on and just loved their push and pull at the end.
You just know Eddie saw Kate dancing with Anthony (knowing full well he was going as Batman…) and then going upstairs and she’s like 😏😏
Love that at the end their little resigned “fine i suppose I’ll do the women of the world a favour and date you” though I’m sure she was a lot less blasé about it on the inside!
Thank you for the wonderful Halloween Fic 🥰🥰🥰
I’m so glad you liked it!
The question really is: Did Edwina plan Kate’s costume to set her up?
The answer: Of course she did.
Edwina standing in the corner with her hot nerd soulmate Mathieu (who in this AU looks like William Jackson Harper) dressed as Jane and Tarzan watching Kate grinding against a hot Batman.
And Edwina’s just like “Do you wanna know something funny?”
And Matt’s smiling politely like “Always.”
“Hot Batman over there? I set Kate up with him three weeks ago and she had a terrible time. Either she’s really drunk, or I was right and she was much more attracted to him than she wanted to admit.”
“Is it cool to trick your sister like-!oh look they’re going upstairs.”
“YES KATIE! I have to go see Colin and tell him we were right!”
Because that’s part of the issue. Kate was far more attracted to this arrogant dick of a man than she wanted to be. He’s cocky and a little smug and she hates that she likes it just a little bit, hates that she thinks if he dropped the bravado she’d like him even more.
And Anthony Bridgerton likes a challenge. His Brother Colin had told him he’d found his perfect woman and Anthony had rolled his eyes. Until he’d been shown a picture and… he’s not a saint okay? And even better she was crazy smart and more than a little combative and Anthony left the date in shock, and didn’t stop thinking about her for the next three weeks.
So yeah, they had crazy good sex, and in the morning, I’m a panic he fed her the worst line he’s ever used and by some absolute miracle. It works.
After they’ve fallen into bed again later that day Anthony wakes and hears her on the phone:
“Yeah I got pulled in by the world’s stupidest fucking pick up line last night, tell Mary my boyfriend’s coming to dinner tomorrow.”
And next Halloween he’s in a matching costume with Kate and her corgi captioning his Instagram post
SHE SAID YES!
