Tony Conrad : L’enfant du violon mal accordé et de la cuisine absurde.

Dans l’ombre des figures de l’avant-garde new-yorkaise, Tony Conrad s’amuse encore à raconter comment tout a commencé.

Car au départ, il y a ce gamin, réservé, un peu gauche, qui se retrouve inscrit à des cours de violon sans trop savoir pourquoi.

Pas dans l’éclat des projecteurs, ni dans le feu sacré d’une vocation précoce, mais dans le documentaire Tony Conrad: The Dreaminimalist de Marie Losier.

Il revient avec humour et autodérision sur son parcours et son rôle dans l’émergence de nouvelles formes artistiques dans les années 1960.

Peut-être un coup des parents. Peut-être un hasard. Ce qu’il sait, c’est que ce fichu instrument ne sonne jamais juste et qu’il fait de son mieux, sans grande conviction.

À côté, il distribue des journaux, mais rechigne à réclamer l’argent des abonnés. S’il entend un « Je n’ai pas la monnaie », il file sans demander son reste.

Et pourtant, c’est avec ses maigres économies qu’il s’offre un violon.

Un instrument dont il déteste la sonorité, une « pièce de merde » comme il le dira plus tard, mais qui va, sans qu’il ne le sache encore, tracer le chemin de son langage musical.

L’enfance de Tony Conrad, c’est aussi celle des petites joies absurdes et des situations cocasses, comme ce fameux Fanny Farmer Cookbook que sa mère sortait parfois.

Lui et ses frères se moquaient du nom, le trouvant particulièrement drôle : Fanny Farmer, c’était bien plus qu’un simple livre de cuisine.

C’était un univers de recettes improbables et de rires, une petite échappatoire dans une vie où l’imprévu et la déconcertante réalité s’entremêlaient.

Un jour, Tony se retrouve à y découvrir une recette de pickles d'oignons, et soudain, une révélation : il pourrait utiliser les oignons comme métaphore pour le film, en particulier pour le film « positive fine grain print stock », qu’il trouve aussi beau et irisé qu’un oignon.

Mais l’art, chez Conrad, ce n’est pas seulement les violons mal accordés ou les recettes de cuisine. C’est un voyage, une quête vers New York, où il rejoint des figures comme La Monte Young, John Cage, et David Berman. Là, il comprend qu’il doit être là, au cœur de l’effervescence créative.

Son arrivée à New York est marquée par une rencontre improbable avec Jack Smith, un cinéaste excentrique et inclassable. Dans un loft qu’il partage avec Smith, Conrad plonge dans un monde où l’art prend des formes inattendues, parfois dérangeantes.

Il croise même Arthur Lubin, le réalisateur des fameux albums de Miss Montesso, qui n’hésite pas à produire des images décalées, parfois cruelles, d’une absurdité assumée.

Là encore, l’art de Tony Conrad ne se limite pas à des simples cases : il est polymorphe, en constante évolution, en perpétuelle remise en question.

Il se souvient d’une époque où sa mère fabriquait des marionnettes, une tradition familiale étrange et drôle, qui lui permettait de s’évader dans un monde où l’innocence des spectacles pour enfants côtoyait des aventures plus philosophiques.

À l’époque, il incarnait tous les personnages de ces spectacles familiaux, du Prince de l'Inde à Santa Claus, toujours avec un brin d’absurdité.

Tony Conrad, à travers les âges, n’a cessé de fuir le conformisme et les attentes sociales.

Du violon mal accordé à la cuisine farfelue, de la rencontre avec la contre-culture new-yorkaise à l’univers onirique des marionnettes, il a toujours su tirer l’essence de ce qui semblait décalé et en faire un terrain d’expérimentation musicale et artistique.

Et ainsi, du Fanny Farmer Cookbook, de l’enfant timide à l’artiste audacieux, Tony Conrad nous invite à reconsidérer la beauté des imperfections, des détours et des accidents.

Et si, finalement, le véritable art ne naissait pas des réussites, mais de ces détours imprévus, de ces instruments mal accordés et de ces recettes absurdes qui transforment notre regard sur le monde ?

"When I first met Lou Reed a the beginning of 1965, he was a 22-year old songwriter at Pickwick Records in Long Island City, and I was a 22-year old avant-garde musician in La Monte Young's Theatre of Eternal Music. We were introduced by a Pickwick producer, Terry Phillips, who thought I was a pop musician because I had long hair. He asked me, Tony Conrad and a friend, the sculptor Walter de Maria, to form a band witht Lou called the Primitives. Phillips wanted to publicize a song had written and recorded in a back room and Pickwick has released as a single, 'The Ostrich', by a fictious band, the Primitives. The pop programme American Bandstand wanted them to perform this on on TV, so Phillips was forced to put out an appropriate-looking band together. We thought it would be fun, and as a lark spent a couple of weekends playing the TV show and a few other East Coast gigs. Even though the record bombed, the experience of being in a rock band, however ersatz, gave Lou and me the opportunity to connect." (John Cale)
