I really admire the way you write bg3 charas and I was curious about your opinion- what you think about the polyamory options in the game? iirc Shadowheart and Astarion are open to it- Shadowheart at least is enthusiastic about poly with Halsin and a four/fivesome with the drows at Sharess’s Caress, I’ve seen mixed interpretations of Astarion’s reactions. Karlach I think? Says she’s open to it but due to circumstance wants a closed relationship. (Halsin ofc is very openly poly.)

Okay, just to be clear, poly isn't having threesomes and vice versa, so I don't think we should use their willingness to have the orgy in Sharess's Caress as a frame of reference. Because the drow twins are two strangers and not people they're in a poly relationship with.

Poly relationships don't require having sex. They're like any other relationship, just with more people. AroAce people can be poly too.

Also, I think the reason we don't have poly ingame besides Halsin, which was a last edition, is because Larian ran out of time and budget. They'd have to make whole new scenes with whole new dialogue trees and animations.

And keep in mind that they're characters, just tools and dolls. Not real people. You can headcanon them all as poly, and it's valid.

Anyway, so here is my opinion who is and who isn't poly ingame.

There are monogamous exlusive characters who make it very clear they don't want poly: Gale, Minthara and maybe Lae'zel

There are some who show being poly but can't due to circumstances and the current options of people: Shadowheart, Karlach, and Astarion.

Side note, I really don't believe that theory going around about how Astarion was only willing to be poly with Halsin because "high elves don't take relationships with wood elves seriously". Maybe if this was dos2 then sure, but Larian really removed most of these things in Baldur's Gate 3.

It feels like cherry-picking. If we are going with this old representation of high elves, then based on that, he'd never be with any non-high elf Tav, not even human. Astarion agreed to share with Halsin because he is clearly comfortable with him. It feels belittling and insulting to both of their queerness to even consider this theory. Especially with how his past lover was a whole drow, you really think a high elf who is racist against wood elves would consider loving a drow if this was the case?

This leaves Wyll, which... honestly, I'm not sure how to categorise him.

Wyll is selfless. He always assumes you're going to choose the other person in Act 2 and bids you farewell, saying how the dance you shared will be a nice memory.

He focuses on his love for you, not owning you, not being possessive, but genuine overflowing love and poems. I think Wyll might be open to being poly but not just with anyone, it would have to be someone he loves as deeply as you.

Gale 1 is my 'standard' Gale. He is a trans man; but he has been through a lot of magic 'surgeries' and will present at first glance like a cis man. The changes were basically seamless. The issue is... Gale. He couldn't resist, when he was having his magic bottom surgery, to make a few... choices. So whilst, much like Caedes he's able to change his cock temporarily on a whim? His standard cock is a little... weird. He's large but not unnaturally so; he has a few ridges and a knot and can knot your character. He also has quite a ... large output. He can modify all of this and if he hasn't slept with your partner before he'll likely disguise his cock to a more natural human one. He does sometimes regret letting his horny brain steer his body design so much. Mystra always made him hide it away so it's been a long time since he's had sex au naturel.

Gale 2 is also a trans man but he's kinda 'earlier' in this process and hasn't had bottom 'surgery' yet. It's questionable whether he will in this universe, because it's been so long. He got too caught up in his studies and magic and Mystra so just... never got around to it. He's also used to magically summoning a cock and is very insecure about his basic body plan, but if he trusts someone enough he would let them see him as he is. Please use masc terms for his genitalia in this situation bc otherwise his brain gets kinda fucky. Gale 3 is the one you are much less likely to encounter, and this is bc this is my 'in game' Gale. He's a cis guy, but he's also in a relationship w Caedes; and he's very much monogamous. (Caedes is actually really chill about Gale sleeping with other people, generally, but Gale is the one who has issue with it.)

Things that are consistent: sO! Gale is a sub. Like. Massively submissive. He loves giving up control. When he's newly with a partner, he will do his best to show himself as impressive - big magic, grand acts, trying in some way to be a strong masculine partner. But the second you try to get control off him, you'll have it. As much as he enjoys getting off, Gale is immensely focused on the other person's pleasure, and will often neglect his own. Look y'all know his issues they're gonna reflect here --

He's also uh. Mad kinky. Gale will do most anything for another partner, including summoning tentacles, using illusion magic to throw together whatever fantasies they want, he'll work super hard for it. I'll add two disclaimers: first, I have yet to fully romance Astarion myself (I've gotten to Gauntlet of Shar/post confession but dropped it because I realized I wanted to do something different with my character too late). Second, I mostly bring up his comment/reaction to Halsin primarily because whenever I mention enjoying KarlachxTavxHalsin, the first thing I get (admittedly, usually by Astarion fans) is how she "actually doesn't approve" (it's to the point I think where a lot of newcomers believe she is one of the solely monogamous companions, with Wyll and Gale), usually paired with this tone of "you are being a dick to her if you want Halsin too." Basically, I'm just pointing out that Astarion's comments can be read as negative/not as enthusiastic towards the proposition as the larger fandom makes him out to be. It's not the full on, out-of-character disgust Karlach has, but there's room for a little nuance (especially if folks are gonna ignore that Karlach basically says "do what makes you happy" like Astarion kinda does)-- I personally think he's a bit nervous about the fact you aren't having sex/is insecure about whether that's actually okay with Tav. I'm not saying AstarionxTavxHalsin is wrong (not at all-- despite my criticisms, I actually like this ship-- tbh, there are few ships that I actually dislike, and even then, I get them), but if the same folks wanting a hot elf sammich are gonna tell me I am problematic for KarlachxTavxHalsin, I am gonna start picking apart scenes/dialogue especially when both pairings are allowed in the vanilla game because sometimes this fandom gets a wee bit hypocritical.

I also 10000% agree with the idea that HalsinxAstarion (with or without Tav) is super popular primarily due to the struck out points described above; I only bring up the Drow twins because I've had folks use that as some additional fuel to their "Karlach isn't poly" spiel (I will also add-- I think folks don't want to pair KarlachxHalsin because two strong, muscular characters-- especially if one is fem-- doesn't fit their visual ship dynamics, which blows since they both canonically find each other attractive. Plus-- THEY WOULD BE SOOOOO GOOD TOGETHER).

Also-- the Shadowlands banter between Karlach and Halsin was 10000% what secured my belief in KarlachxTavxHalsin (prev you basically recounted the full thing word-for-word), and in my playthrough this basically happened the night after my Tav and Karlach had sex post LLI. I like to think my Tav heard them and was like HELL YESS I GET TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BIG BEEFY SAMMICH only to be disappointed by Larian.

Basically-- I fully agree with you prev. on all points and was just focusing on some of the specific dialogues in my post. But yes-- we should be able to fuck Karlach as friends. Honestly Larian-- where is the Karlach-gets-passed-around-like-a-blunt-at-camp post LLI scene?

Side note: omg KarlachxAstarionxHalsin would be so damn PRECIOUS.
