he ACTUALLY thought that HE, himself, was permanently blinded before going, 20 minutes later, “OH FUCK! I can see again”

If I had a nickel for every time a main Star Trek character had a brother who was forced into becoming the villain of the story by a combination of mental illness, bad parenting, and a cosmic entity, and who’s last action despite everything was to express their love to their largely emotionless sibling, I’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s incredibly fucking weird that this has happened twice.
