The diary entries of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels show that the Third Reich was deliberately distorting reports of Czech aggression and exaggerating German political responses to blackmail the international community into conceding to Berlin’s demands.

In June 1938, Goebbels described the Nazi campaign to seize Czechoslovakia: “We must bite hard—then the situation will get very dangerous.”

“Prague still lives in a complete illusion. People there believe they will get help from France, Russia and even England. Poor idiots!” Goebbels gloated over the looming fate of the Czechs.

“All is over. Silent, mournful, abandoned, broken, Czechoslovakia recedes into the darkness,” Churchill admonished the House of Commons on Oct. 5, 1938.

In just 3 years, everything would change again. That change was named Reinhard Heydrich.

After seizing power in Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic now), Heydrich arranged the swift execution of Alois Elias, the nominal head of the Czech government. This effectively destroyed Czech national sovereignty and allowed Heydrich to rule as dictator. Heydrich did away with standard court proceedings. Instead, he created a police state and encouraged civilians to denounce each other. Trials were conducted by civilians and police. Heydrich enforced executions at lightning speed.

In October and November 1941, Heydrich’s kangaroo court system executed at least 342 people and turned an additional estimated 1,289 people over to the Gestapo.

Except this squeaky voiced asshole was smart. Perhaps too smart for his own good, given we know what happened to him.

Heydrich employed the good'ol stick and carrot method. I'll do right by you, IF you do right by me. Food rations were increased. Things like proper clothing and footwear were given to those that toed the nazi line and worked hard.

It seems that Heydrich believed the Czech people liked him or at least respected him.

Foolishness on his part, for certain. The Butcher of Prague was himself butchered. Rightfully so.

The Bad News Bears, having recently found the Tears of Serraih and stopped a selfish, reckless summoner from bringing destruction to the world, are setting off on the next chapter of their adventure. They are traveling from Varwick to the ancient twin cities of Chanyeol and Cheadal. While Cheadal is considered the center of Ostesh faith, Chanyeol is a center of arcane magic learnings. The Bad News Bears will travel from Varwick to Craydon’s Ferry, then onwards to Stington where they will meet a merchant caravan to accompany north to Norton and finally to Chanyeol. Who thinks it will be a calm, pleasant journey through early summer? Not I, says the DM. And neither do my players.

Torchship Dev Diary 6 - Local Space

In keeping with the alternating lore/rules dev diaries, this one is going to be lore-heavy, though we’ll touch on mechanics here and there. It’s about the world of Torchship, and specifically the 

Local Space

Torchship is set in and around the former territory of the Aquillian Empire, a vast and ancient imperial power whose defeat by upstart humans and their allies sets the stage for the campaign. This area and its immediate neighbours are known simply as ‘local space’, which can be thought of kinda the way the Alpha Quadrant works in Star Trek. It’s the local political scene, and one that has been heavily shaken up.

Before we get into it, we should talk about some of the material factors that shaped the galaxy as it is today. FTL travel in this setting is roughly the same as the speeds that vessels in TOS managed, except we’re actually holding you to it; you do not have the ability to cross the galaxy as the plot demands, which shapes the kinds of adventures you have. 

The speedy exploration rockets of Star Patrol have a sustained speed of just one light year per day, which is still ridiculous, but means it takes about a week to get between stars. That means to get from one side of the galaxy to the other would take almost three hundred years. This helps to constrain the action; in the majority of cases, every system is a self-contained little adventure, and you can’t rocket off between systems casually or call for help that’ll arrive instantly.

But to make interstellar travel, warfare, and politics still make sense with speeds like that, we’ve added a bit of a twist. At great expense, powers can build themselves a sort of interstellar railroad called a beacon network, which consists of giant stations positioned light-years apart forming bridges of space between them. An FTL-capable rocket which gets on the beacon network has its speed hugely multiplied; making what would be months or even years-long trips take mere weeks.

The beacon network is hugely important to the galaxy, which is why humanity blowing a lot of it up in the big war two decades ago has caused a lot of issues. The IUR is slowly bringing the network back online again, and most of your campaigns are about being explorers at the very edge of the network, pressing on into unknown space or reclaiming the border stations the Aquillians abandoned for cost centuries ago.

Yeager-1 approaches a reactivated Aquillian beacon at the end of a branch of the network. Beyond this point is unknown space.

The Exploration Taboo

For being mostly an empty void, space in Torchship is dense with Strange Things. One of the conceits of the setting is that the weekly adventures of the Enterprise are not exceptional; every single ship in Star Patrol deals with this bullshit every time they pull into a new system. Star Patrol has manuals for what to do when you fall back in time to 1967, encounter beings claiming to be ancient Earth gods, or run into giant space microorganisms, because it just happens so often.

In fact, it happens so often that space empires gradually lose the stomach for adventure, or else get wiped out by superpowered godlike beings they upset. This is called the Exploration Taboo, and while it varies in strength over the centuries, it’s the reason why there’s so much unknown space despite thousands of years of alien empires knocking about. After your third neighbour is assimilated by a hive mind they stumbled over, even sending probes or looking too closely by telescope starts to feel too dangerous to risk.

As a result, instead of blob-like borders encompassing stars in neat and simple fashion, alien powers form vast spindly spiderwebs of explored stars linked by the beacon network, surrounded by the dark unknown. Borders are simply where these webs brush up against each other by chance, and as a result the various powers tend to be entangled by overlapping networks, separated by dozens or hundreds of light years that may as well be impassable walls for all the dangers lurking inside.

Humanity, being new to the place, doesn’t have an exploration taboo yet, which is why you’re going to be the ones to venture off the network and discover all the wonders and horrors of the galaxy. By doing so, other powers have also been forced out of their caution to do something similar, at least for now.

The Major Players

Besides the Star Union, we have a few pre-defined major players in the galaxy. Nothing is stopping you from making your own, but these are some of the ones we prepped for you. Each of these powers has a number of associated Identities you can use in character creation, so you can absolutely play defectors, ambassadors, or liaisons from them.

The Aquillian Remnants & Breakaways

Aquillians are the local smug space elves and, thirty years ago, the Aquillian Empire was the dominant (though declining) power of local space, whose enormous beacon network spanned a thousand light years. Local Space is very much defined by them, and the rivalries they formed with other powers. They had twelve developed worlds and hundreds of minor colonists, tributaries, and vassals; local space was until recently unipolar and the compass pointed unwaveringly in their direction.

The Aquillian Empire also sucked. They systematically conquered newcomers to FTL travel, exiled people off their worlds, genetically engineered their own population into meek compliance, and wiped out rivals with biological weapons. Whatever else happens now, the galaxy is better for its collapse. 

In its place has arisen hundreds of micro-states; some of these are various conquered aliens finally achieving independence, but most are Aquillian-dominated. The IUR classifies these are remnants (states which want to rebuild the Empire in some way) and breakaways (states which don’t, and incidentally are usually friendly to the Union). These two groups act as essentially the default groups to reach for if you just need some folks to be up to something, with the remnants hostile and the breakaways somewhere on a spectrum between neutral and desperately appeasing toward the Union.

The biggest Remnant is the Divine Empire, which controls the Aquillian homeworld and has the best claim to the throne; they’re the result of formerly-somewhat-fringe sect of people who worship past Emperors as a patheon gaining power and their Empress is constantly looking to undermine the IUR and get her Empire back. The DMZ between them and the IUR is the perfect place for some covert espionage action.

The biggest Breakaway is the First Aquillian Republic, which is on the cusp of joining the Union outright, making them perfect allies for early in your campaigns. Because all the historical republics and revolutionary movements of Aquillian history got memory-holed, and because Solar Patrol used to jam up Aquillian communication channels with the 2120s movie adaptation of Les Misérables, they consciously model themselves on a sort of alien pastiche of the French Revolution; presumably the studio had the costumes lying around. They’re rife with interesting problems to build episodes around, like their fear of genetic engineering which is keeping them out of the Union, their discrimination against the Enforcer caste of the former empire, and their unstable political system.

Though much reduced from the height of Imperial power, the Divine Empire has access to many ancient and terrible tools.

The Zinovian Sphere

Properly the Universal Republic, the Zinovian Sphere was once a close ally of the Star Union before there was an absolutely catastrophic falling out. See, four hundred years ago, the Zinovians rose up against the Aquillian colonists occupying their homeworld, and lost. Exiled from their own planet and forcefully settled on a handful of marginally-survivable high-gravity worlds, the revolutionaries managed to rebuild their society into a powerhouse, albeit at enormous cost. 

When humanity started fighting the Aquillian Empire, they eagerly allied with us, sharing their technology in exchange for the promise we’d help them take their homeworld back. But when the Aquillians sued for peace a hundred light years short of their former home, a war-weary humanity signed the treaty. As you can imagine, the Zinovians didn’t take it well.

The Zinovians are fun because they’re actually eight factions in a trenchcoat, meaning that any episode dealing with them will undoubtedly be complicated by the fact they're working at cross-purposes to each other. The Zinovian government has eight ministries which have at this point each become a minor power of their own, rivals with one another but united by their desire to get their homeworld back and make the Aquillians pay. When one Ministry reaches out to the Union to try and patch things up, another is there to sabotage them. 

Defectors and spies and propaganda campaigns go both ways between them and the Union, so they make perfect fodder for Cold War style stories and wheels-within-wheels, all packaged in the tragedy of a falling-out that humanity is very much not blameless in.

Zinovian rockets are heavily armoured, heavily armed, and all business.

The CNFT

The Contractually Networked Free Territories are an offshoot of the Aquillian Empire which managed to secure a lot of wealth and power by exploiting how much the galaxy sucks. While most powers in the setting are states run by and for a single species, the CNFT is a multi-species project who have historically taken in refugees and asylum-seekers from the many conflicts sparking in the wake of the decaying Empire… and promptly exploiting their labour. As long as the flow of newcomers kept up, the capitalist system of the CNFT would continue to grow.

Well, the arrival of the Star Union to the scene has quite suddenly rearranged the priority destination for a lot of desperate people, and the CNFT is feeling it. To keep their quarterly growth targets, its corporations engage in all sorts of nefarious and/or stupid schemes in the fringes of its space, schemes which Star Patrollers might stumble upon. Of course, you have to be careful defusing this situation, because when their corporations get bullied by the meanie communists, the CNFT have a tendency to send their extremely well funded and extremely terrifying military out to settle matters in their favour.

Because they’re a multi-species nation, the CNFT has a lot of interesting diversity, from the descendants of Zinovian refugees playing up the highly marketable Warrior Race angle to the original Aquillian species before all the genetic modification to the labour robots they buy in bulk. They’re also uniquely easy to bribe, for obvious reasons, which can make them a clutch, if somewhat mercenary, ally in the right circumstances.

The Voxyte Cooperative

You know those episodes where Kirk beams down to a planet to find some cavemen worshipping a computer? The Voxyte are what happens when Kirk never shows up and those cavemen build a technological civilization at the computer’s instructions. Now a local power, the Voxyte don’t worship their computers anymore, but they still do turn over everything from organising their politics to arranging relationships to them, their entire lives dictated by algorithms.

The Voxyte are allies of the IUR, albeit allies who are as horrified by our chaotic, unorderly, and hurt-prone society as we are of the lack of privacy and choice in theirs. It’s a situation that leads to a lot of awkwardness and misunderstanding which can create interesting diplomatic problems to work through, complicated by the whims of their AI overlords. What happens when, say, a Voxyte comes up to one of your crew and announces the computer has decided they’re perfectly compatible and thus married now? What happens when a Voxyte defects their society for yours? What happens when one of your crew defects your society for theirs?

The other thing that’s fun about the Voxyte is they’re one tech level ahead, with 7d6 tools and incredible resources that could really help the IUR, which means you’re incentivized to either suck up to them or exploit their naive innocence. They’ve been a pariah state for centuries, and they’re so glad to just have a friend out in the stars that, unfortunately, you might just walk all over them.

The Argentotrons

Fifteen hundred years ago, a previous incarnation of the Aquillian Empire was counterbalanced with the Argent Empire, an even larger and older power which had long constrained their ambitions. After years of conflict and tense peace, the Aquillians engineered a biological weapon which took lethal advantage of a quirk in Argent biology; within two centuries, they were all dead.

In those two centuries, though, the Argent were forced to increasingly automate their society to make up for their failing health and declining numbers, and did such a good job of it that, despite probably being extinct, their empire is still there. The Argentotrons are the robotic ships, stations, and servants which continue to follow ancient directives, still churning out vehicles for the coming war and mining whole systems dry despite slowly decaying to nothing. 

You can’t really negotiate with the Argentotrons; they aren’t actually sentient, or at least they don’t seem to be. But that does mean there’s an entire empire’s worth of refining and mining just sitting in storehouses or being shipped to dead worlds, unimaginable material wealth which could go a huge way toward shoring up the Union’s position and stabilising local space. 

All you have to do is avoid the killbots and get their first.

The Nariene Environmental Protectorate

When humanity first ran into the Nariene, they’d uplifted a species to act as a fresh petroleum market, and to kidnap the psychics among their population for experimentation. This was a pretty good introduction to the Protectorate, supposedly a sort of climate safeguarding organisation for the Nariene equivalent of the UN, and in reality the fascist organisation that took over their space program and is spreading rapidly to the stars. For a long time they were kept in check by the proximity to the Aquillian Empire, which prevented them from expanding too far lest they be detected, but no such restrictions exist now.

The Nariene are a dark mirror of the IUR, a similarly young and dynamic political body expanding rapidly in the power vacuum of the dead Empire, desperate for resources. In the Nariene’s case, it’s because their homeworld is dying, choked by unchecked industry and a runaway carbon cycle, worsened by the conquests needed to hold it at bay. They’ve got incredible stealth technology from centuries of tiptoing around the sleeping giants and have built up a shipbuilding industry which is growing out of control; in a few years, they might eclipse the IUR, unless they collapse or somebody stops them.

The Nariene EP are great villains, pure and simple; everything about them is designed to make for excellent rivals to grapple with over the course of a campaign. They’ve got no exploration taboo either, and a branch of explorers similar to Star Patrol. When you run into them, you know they’re up to no good, but they also know they’re not yet in a position to beat the IUR in a straight fight so they have to be sneaky about it, dancing around the technicalities of the treaty between the two powers. As explorers, you probably aren’t well equipped to fight them either, but whatever they’re up to, they have to be stopped. When you do beat them, their cloaking devices and small-scale teleports means they’re slippery enough for their commanders to always wiggle away, shaking their fists. I’ll get you next time, Star Patrol!

Of course, it’s not hopeless. The Protectorate’s ongoing power depends on the by-in of a population it doesn’t fully control, many of whom genuinely do want to try and fix their homeworld instead of just continuing to feed the factories and line the pockets of their rich backers. There are idealists in their ranks to appeal to and resistance groups you can ally with; maybe you can help put a stop to this and explore the stars together.

Others

Local space is a big place, and I can’t even cover everyone here. There’s vast runner fleets like the Cyphillon, plant-people with no homeworld living aboard greenhouse-like ships. There’s chlorine-breathing species working for multiple powers on toxic worlds, silicon-based life, and sentient robot species. There’s the enigmatic Watchers, if they really exist, parallel dimensions that keep brushing up against ours, and the distant threat of the Engon Assembly lurking on the far side of Voxyte space. Looming over all of it is the White Marble Civilization, the vast and seemingly omnipotent power which barely seems to notice the ants scurrying about underfoot. There’s a whole galaxy to explore.

However this man was so persistent that as Ani got up to leave he tried to hug and kiss her. Ani with her face turned away was basically licked. Traumatised everyone had a quiet evening and early bedtime.

Long Rest? What’s that?

Our heroes (plus Swish) awaken to a somewhat drizzly morning. The druid remembers that Druidcraft can tell the weather, so knows it won’t rain for another 24 hours. After some discussion, the three decided to proceed by shooting a grappling hook with a rope across. Then Comfort, with Neni, wades across, while holding onto the rope with Sahzal anchoring (despite having a negative modifier). Comfort, the tol redhead, succeeds easily. Swish the Kenku bounds easily across. Then Sahzal tries to get across, fails her check, and is almost swept away by the current. Luckily she succeeds Dex (rogues are good at Dex, go figure), and holds onto the rope, so Comfort and Neni can drag the drowned tiefling to the other side. Sahzal is cold and wet but mostly unharmed. They were clever enough (and rolled well enough) to tie a knot in the rope that they could undo from afar, when needed.

DM notes: I didn’t actually like this challenge… didn’t seem interesting enough. But hey, it worked.

After a short rest to dry off, the three plus Swish continue on their way. They soon come across the remains of a merchant caravan. Nothing much is left besides a few scraps of clothing, blood splatters almost worn away by the earlier rain, and smashed wagons. After a few investigation and survival checks, Neni concludes the attackers were gnolls, and Sahzal and Comfort find some valuable stones and a small figurine of a Halfling that looks like it has been chewed on. Sahzal also finds a roughly made dagger someone made out of worg’s tooth, and keeps it.

The three hear howling of gnolls, but manage to stay quiet and unobtrusive enough to avoid notice. They bed down for the night.

On day three, they rise bright and early to the sound of more howling. The gnolls have found them! Sahzal, Neni, Comfort, and Swish try to escape through a Skill Challenge! By using skills they are proficient in, they try to lose the gnolls in the woods. I think they got the allotted 3 successes before 3 failures and managed to lose the gnolls… for now. The great thing about being the DM is you can just move the encounter you planned to somewhere else so you get use out of the encounter and make it seem like the players still got away from something.

There was running. So much running. There’s a nice list of chase mechanics and random chase complications in the DMs guide. I used a few of them for flavor. 

The successful skill challenge did give the players time to set some traps. Neni and Comfort had hunting traps, which they combined with ropes stretched across trails they thought the gnolls would take. Then, they hid.

DM notes: as part of my homebrew, I let the players use a Survival check to hide the hunting traps versus the gnolls’ perception/passive perception. If they failed, disadvantage on the dex check to avoid the traps. Unfortunately, the gnolls rolled decently. 

The gnolls, one gnoll and one hunter (multi-attack, higher perception and stealth than normal gnolls, plus their arrows slow the attacked creature) brought two hyenas (CR 0 monsters are good to flesh out an encounter at early levels, just watch out for damage amounts!). One of the gnolls tripped and fell prone, and eventually fell victim to Comfort’s quarterstaff. Swish, as an NPC, offered some support by climbing a tree and offering a few shots from a light crossbow. They also used Healing Word when Comfort or Sahzal fell to too much damage. I had Swish climb a tree so they couldn’t tank hits, and mostly just offer healing so Neni could figure out her spellcasting abilities instead of always being the healer (I also wanted her to keep spell slots for later for Reasons).

They won, but barely got time to rest before more gnoll howls and barking laughter was on their tails. They thought they had gotten away… and eventually settled down to rest.

But, cackles the DM, they didn’t get to rest for very long. A very fun mechanic is to cut your players rests short so they don’t get the benefits! But, don’t be too mean. I had a back up if it looked like the group was going to be killed. While I’m not against player deaths, I wanted the new players to at least get to town before they got themselves killed. Level 1 PCs are VERY squishy! The thief had 9 HP! That’s two hits!

Anyways, the poor players are awoken by howling gnolls and shadows around their camp. Luckily, they found a defensible location up against some huge boulders and warded avenues of attack with rope, caltrops, and hunting traps again. Unluckily… their friend Swish the healer was nowhere to be seen. Also luckily, for Comfort the non-darkvision human, at least, Sahzal the Abyssal Tiefling rolled Light as her daily cantrip.

This is why I tried to help Neni conserve spell slots before.

They were attacked by two more hyenas, a gnoll, and two witherlings. The gnoll was caught by a trap and never had much of a chance to attack as he was focused down. One of the hyenas stepped on caltrops and was slowed enough to give the players some time to focus instead of being surrounded. However, things still looked quite grim.

Sahzal tried one of her favorite techniques—run away just a little bit but never enough to actually get out of range of the monster so I’ll get run down anyways! Note to Sahzal: 20 feet does not outrun many monsters. Neni and Comfort didn’t stay very close together, either, much to Comfort’s chagrin as she tried to tank for people who just wouldn’t stay close…

I was going to only make the players last for some number of turns, but they managed to kill everyone except for a hyena or two, which ran away injured once the gnolls were down, before my deadline. But once all of the gnolls were down, the three still heard howls, still heard yelps, and still saw dark shapes out in the shadows. Sahzal used Light on the large boulder they had their backs against and they stood ready for a last stand…

Only for a familiar shape come leaping out of the shadows to take down a leaping gnoll. It was a kenku, but not their friend Swish, another kenku with a red spot on his neck. The kenku was accompanied by a huge dog that took down another gnoll from the woods. More humanoid and canine shapes in the woods cleaned out the gnolls that had the three players cornered. One, a human female with the biggest, fluffiest mastiff/wolf dog they’d ever seen at her side came out of the woods and introduced herself as Dannyl Riswick, and her dog Butterscotch. The kenku introduced himself as Strawberry, and called them a bunch of idiots… but thanked them for helping out Swish. It turned out that Swish had run along ahead to the town and made a nuisance of themselves until the gates opened and a rescue squad was assembled to save Comfort, Sahzal, and Neni.

Dannyl and Strawberry (and Butterscotch of course) accompany the three tired and wounded travelers to the gates of town, where they are lead to warm, fur-covered beds, and collapse into an exhausted, healing sleep (and finally get that fucking long rest they wanted).

Ashton checks how the girls are doing and makes sure their injuries have healed sufficiently, then bustles them into the other room for breakfast (Neni rides a dog taller than her to the table).

Ashton, with little input from his wife (who is not a morning person), speaks a little of the town and of his suggestions for what the girls should do. Unfortunately, they cannot stay at the temple, as they aren’t injured anymore. He recommends heading to one of the two inns in town. There is the Blue Trout, owned by Harrod Linscott, the mayor of the town. The Blue Trout is in the main square, and is where the merchants and most visitors to town live. The other inn is Crow’s Feet Inn, which Dannyl informs them is where they will find their friend Swish. The owner, Del, has more reasonable rates than the Blue Trout, and the inn is offset from the main part of town and a quieter establishment.

After breakfast, Sahzal, Comfort, and Neni head outside to see their first conscious view of Varwick. It is a small, walled town of tightly clustered wooden houses with shared yards every few, with very few buildings over a story in height. They have slanted roofs, proof of the heavy snowfall the northern reaches encounter. A tall watchtower by each gate rises above the sturdy walls, and shows the shadows of sentries standing on alert and looking out to the forest that surrounds the town. The town is centered around a cluster of stone buildings a short distance from the temple they just departed. One is a three story tall inn with a blue fish sign that is visible even from where they stand, obviously the Blue Trout Inn. The next largest building is closer to the lake the town borders is two stories tall but has a squat belltower rising above it. Dannyl points it out as the town hall and location of the harbormaster, Asenray Liebwin. She is steward over the summer bounty. A few streets over, just past the town hall is the dark waters of the Blier Bore. Several small docks jut out into the water, mostly empty, though a fishing boats can be seen on dock, either early in or awaiting repairs. Other buildings of note include a smithy down the street from the temple with a small attached living quarters. Smoke and clanging metal come from the squat building. Down further is an apothecary, signified by the bundled herbs outside. Even further than the apothecary, up against the back wall, is another two story building that Dannyl points to as the second inn.

The streets are busy but not crowded as the few hundred residents of the town go about their business. They are an assorted, rough collection of people of many different races, with very few children in sight. Many have a large dog beside them or guarding the front porch of the house. Many of the houses have a few chickens or even a goat wandering carefully fenced off gardens in the shared yards. The town as a whole and its residents are rough, but clean. Almost everyone in sight bears some sort of weapon, and Dannyl advises the three women to keep them as well, as raids from the forest dwellers are not uncommon, but also warns to keep out of trouble. She is the head of the town’s militia, after all, and would hate to see her husband’s hospitality revoked.

With that warning in their ears, Dannyl stalks off to the kennels attached to the temple and is greeted by a happy chorus of barks, and the three players are left to their own in the new town. There is a bit of a discussion about whether they will continue to travel together, but Comfort dismisses discussion by just following Sahzal when she walks off with Neni on her shoulders.

They first head to the apothecary, where they are introduced to Elric, the gnomish proprietor. The apothecary is slightly cramped inside for Sahzal and especially tall Comfort, with the walls lined with books, scrolls, herbs, and potion vials. The window is covered with herbs in various stages of drying. The back room and the potion vials are locked up tight behind several layers of locks, some of which shine with magical energy when Elric unlocks them. The alchemist is a bit eccentric, but is generally reacts to the three players well, especially when Neni expresses an interest in the local herbs. He gladly offers to let her read and copy a scroll about the local flora, for a small fee, of course. He also jokes a little about them getting rescued on the road the night before. Apparently, news travels fast around town. Neni, Sahzal, and Comfort purchase a few healing potions and move on.

Their next stop is the blacksmith’s. The blacksmith is Havry Stonebrow, a gruff dwarf who does not acknowledge the girls as they step into his dark but surprisingly clean and extremely neat forge. He is hammering at the forge, which is the only sooty corner of the forge, the soot somehow kept to that corner and away from the weapons, armor, and adventuring gear on the walls around the shop. Sahzal touches something. Havry barks, “hands off, girly.” Sahzal would have touched something again, but Havry finished his work for the moment and turns to the girls, gruffly demanding what they want.

Sahzal’s charming approach to diplomacy lands her with ever-increasing prices, eventually forcing Comfort to step in and smooth things over a bit. Sahzal, however, notices that Havry’s eyes twinkle a little in amusement with every barbed comment they exchange (especially when Sahzal actually purchases something). They pick up some extra ammunition, studded leather armor, an extra hunting trap, and a few more odds and ends.

The girls decide to skip the Blue Trout Inn altogether, though they see it is a bustling place, with pleasant music emerging from it. They instead head to Crow’s Feet Inn, which has a rather crude sign outside with the words “Crow’s Feet Inn” burned into the wood and a crude black feather underneath. When they step inside they notice it is not nearly as busy as Blue Trout, but there are a few inside for a late lunch. Most of those inside the main dining area are the kenku staff who are cleaning tables, sanding down talon marks, moving dishes into the back, or hanging out talking to the patrons. The room is an eclectic mix of mismatched furniture that has seen better years, but is still clean. The walls are lined with shelves that are covered in an incredible assortment of knickknacks, little stones of every color, feathers, skulls, antlers, interesting weapons, twisted pieces of wood, statues, mostly seemingly junk but all an interesting mishmash of trinkets. There is a snow leopard tabaxi sitting on the bar chattering the ear off a diminutive sun elf behind the bar.

The girls have a chance to take in their surroundings for only a moment before they are nearly bowled over by a short flurry of black feathers and happy chirps. Swish gives each of them a huge hug and peeps of greeting in broken Common. After their greetings and assurances that they are not hurt, Swish herds them over to the bar and triumphantly introduces them to the elf, who’s name is Del, and is the owner of the inn. The girls quickly realize that Del is blind as he introduces himself and thanks them for picking up Swish on the road and keeping them out of trouble in their travels. Del offers a deal. They can stay in a small converted storage room for a fraction of the price that three rooms would otherwise cost, with meals and one drink a night thrown in. They accept, and Del passes them off to Strawberry, the inn’s manager, to take them to the room.

That evening, Sahzal, Neni, and Comfort go to the dining area to socialize and get some information. Strawberry introduces them to the details of the summer bounty that brings adventurers from all over to the small town of Varwick. In return for cleansing the woods of the monsters that proliferate and make things dangerous for the town and the winter fur trappers, where the town gets most of its income, the town gives out a bounty for each monster head. The girls have already been introduced to the gnolls that are that spring’s most pressing problem.

After they are introduced to the bounty, a woman a few years older than them approaches them. She introduces herself as Fen, and requests their assistance to clear an owlbear den. She explains that she isn’t that familiar with the woods, so she’d rather have company, especially against an owlbear. She’ll pay them of course, and offers 125 gold for their assistance. They think it over, and accept.

Sahzal asks Del about Fen when she has a moment (and rolls a Nat 20, of course). Fen came to Varwick about a month ago. She claims to be escaping some family drama, maybe an arranged marriage. Del has noticed that her accent speaks of a higher class of birth than what she’s claimed, but she hasn’t caused any trouble, so he’s left her to her own devices. She’s been helpful and can hold her own in a fight. Sahzal is a little reassured that they won’t be taken into the woods and killed.

Before heading to bed to rest up and brainstorm what to do about owlbears (and what the hell is an owlbear, in Sahzal’s case), Comfort spots someone she knows. One of the reasons she came to Varwick was stories, mostly from her brother, and many featuring a certain famous figure of the region known as the Druoi Drain. It is Reinbeck, the master sharpshooter, the one who could fire six hand crossbows in the time it took most men to fire only one. He is sitting at one of the tables in Crow’s Feet, along with the mysterious hooded and cloaked Jii and the sweet cleric Grace. Comfort approaches her hero to ask for advice on fighting owlbears. His advice? Avoid the owlbears, but he’ll help her out if she really wants to. Don’t engage in melee. Don’t let yourself be hunted, or you’ll get cornered. Use the terrain to your advantage. He compliments Comfort on making it to town in one piece (the compliment goes way over her head).

The three of them go to their room to rest up and figure out how in the world are they going to fight owlbears.

DM’s notes: this session was a lot of fun. It involved 0 fighting and very few rolls, but lots of getting to know the characters, the setting, and rp! They made quite the impression on many of the residents.

Introducing Varwick

Now is the year 2394 OR (Osheth reckoning) and it is an exciting time to be an adventurer around the continent of Makor. The dragon turtles are swarming outside of their normal breeding times within the Ranfus Sea, cutting off many of the trade routes between countries. Nonsu reports that the orc tribes of the Shabok Drylands are amassing under one banner: that of the Bloodfist. They prepare for war. The fey Freland Forest are expanding almost as fast as Osten’s mages and soldiers can burn it back. Societies of the deep roads, the surly deep dwarves, the stoic deep gnomes, even drow, speak of civil war among the great undercities; unrest that is quick spreading through the depths of the earth. Diviners at the ancient city of Cheadal and across the lands of the inland sea speak of grave portents… but are blind to exactly what is to come.

This is a land of magic, arcane, divine, and mundane, where the great dual Creator deities Ran-Mah cycle through sleep and awake as they watch over the planes of existence. We start our adventure in the north west Osten Empire, in the region called the Druoi Drain, a series of large lakes and rivers that span the wilderness and forests between Droiland and Osten. On the northern shore of the largest lake, the massive, bottomless Bleir Bore, fur traders and fishermen have beaten back the Svatzvald Forest and the monsters within to build the small town of Varwick. Filled with the rough and ready and those otherwise disinclined to join more heavily populated areas, the town is home to a varied and motley crew of adventurers and trappers, and a famous summer bounty on monstrous creature heads. The bounty brings people from far around, looking for a quick fortune or an out of the way corner of the world to escape responsibility.

We join our heroes midway on the muddy and wagon-rutted road between Craydon’s Ferry and Varwick. They are a group you don’t see together very often. Comfort, a fighter, left her farm home in the night with all the weapons and supplies she could carry and set out to see the world, find adventure, and prove herself. Neni the Halfling druid rides on Comfort’s shoulders most of the time, taking notes about her observations in this strange land so far from home. She left her home, the equatorial islands of the ghostwise Halfling clans, on a journey to learn of the world and find the balance within herself. Last, we come to Sahzal, a tiefling of grey and black and fiendish magic running through her veins. She flees unfortunate attention placed on her by the regional thieves’ guild, of which she was a member until a falling out occurred. Neni joined Comfort because she likes to climb tall things. Sahzal joined because there is strength in numbers and faith in her ability to outrun a farmgirl and a Halfling

The three have travelled together for a few days and are just getting to know one another when they hear a commotion up ahead. Comfort urges the other two to come with her to see what is wrong, Neni agrees, and Sahzal reluctantly follows, setting the stage for many an adventure to come. They find a trio of blighted skeletons with hunched backs, canid skulls, and jutting, black stained fangs attacking a small, chirping, leaping kenku, who peeps “Help help!” to the ladies when they see the group. Neni identifies the creatures as Witherlings, undead gnolls, and the trio remembers hearing that the road to Varwick was particularly dangerous this spring because of a gnoll warband harassing travelers.

The trio dispatches the witherlings, with Neni learning how potent her Produce Flame cantrip can be incinerating desiccated scraps of flesh, and Comfort using her quarterstaff on her very first mobile (if non-living) target. The kenku introduces themself as Swish, though they have a very rough grasp on the Common tongue and spend most of their time peeping or echoing words said to them to learn more.

That night, Neni ruins her first DM plan by rolling a Nat 20 to find a safe place to rest, and the heroes conclude the session for the evening, unsure of what is to come.
