Cine: Nowhere (1997)

El cine de Gregg Araki no es sencillo: está lleno de escenas que conllevan un simbolismo que no es fácil de asimilar ni comprender. Así lo demuestran películas, ya reseñadas en este blog, como "Mysterious Skin" (2004) y, más específicamente, "Kaboom" (2010). En esta oportunidad estamos frente al cierre de una trilogía a la que denominó "Teenage Apocalypse" (Apocalipsis adolescente), precedida por  "Totally F***ed Up" (1993) y "Doom Generation" (1995). Una aclaración: no es necesario ver estos filmes para sentarse a ver "Nowhere".

La historia se centra en un grupo de adolescentes, los cuales pasan su tiempo esperando la gran fiesta ofrecida por un tal "Jujifruit" (Gibby Haines). Es un mundo surreal y salvaje en el que todo límite, incluso los de la realidad, son difusos. Los personajes principales incluyen a Dark (James Duval), un chico que trabaja realizando videos mientras tiene visiones de un extraterrestre con rasgos reptilianos que secuestra a sus amigos y a su novia Mel (Rachel True), que tiene una amante en Lucifer (Kathleen Robertson). Al peculiar trío llega Montgomery (Nathan Bexton), un chico que seduce a Dark con su tímida personalidad.

Esta peculiar comedia negra incluye otros nombres muy conocidos para el público estadounidense, de los cuales algunos también pueden serlo para el espectador de otros lares: Christina Applegate (Dingbat), Chiara Mastroianni (Kriss), Debi Mazar (Kozi), Jordan Ladd (Alyssa), Ryan Philippe (Shad), Heather Graham (Lilith), Scott Caan (Ducky), Mena Suvari (Zoe), Denise Richards (Jana), Staci Keanan (Ever) y, en otros roles, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan y Traci Lords. El elenco adulto incluye a Beverly D´Angelo (la madre de Dark), John Ritter (el telepredicador Moses Helper), Charlotte Rae (una adivina), la ex estrella infantil Christopher Knight y Eve Plumb (los Sightvatsohn).

El grupo adolescente se completa con Joshua Gibran Mayweather (Zero, el hermano menor de Mel), Sarah Lassez ("Egg", la malograda hermana de Ducky), Guillermo Díaz (Cowboy, el novio de Bart, interpretado por Jeremy Jordan), Thyme Lewis (Elvis, el novio brutal de Alyssa) y Devon Odessa ("What").

👉 One of my Fave Club tracks from back in the day (like “95, I think) … er.. nights. I remember when this was being played everywhere. … There sure seemed to be a lot of smooching in dark places to this one… go figure, right? It’s one of those awesome tracks that had that effect, at least at the dark clubs I was hanging out at, at the time. :)

"Nowhere is Like Beverly Hills 90210 on acid"! Since isolation we've been catching up on some old AND newer films by one of my favorite directors from the 90's, Gregg Araki. The man I loved from my teenage youth who I always felt like my twin with his taste and love of sex, shoegaze/synth pop music, aliens and murders. His style in films still captivates me today Including one I seen recently... WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD (2014, my new personal fav of late). ----‐------------------------------------- NOWHERE, DOOM GENERATION and TOTALLY FUCKED UP was part of his "Teenage Apocalypse Trilogy" that starred the underrated JAMES DUVAL (Donnie Darko). Araki had a gift of picking the next big star's for his films, and Nowhere had many familiar faces I love. SPLENDOR (1999) MYSTERIOUS SKIN (2004) and KABOOM(2010), are two more that are worth watching.
