This Week in BL - Multiple Thrupples are Forming

June 2023 Wk 2

Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Step By Step (Tues WeTV & Gaga) ep 8 of 10 - Emotional blackmail from the ex notwithstanding, I guess it’s Pat’s turn to break hearts. I have to say Up was really well cast in this part - extremely believable. Well done all around. Jeng is so smitten, so awkward, so cautious, yet so sharp when it comes to a seme confrontations. I LOVE how sensitive Jeng is to the fact that he has a one-sided crush but also deluded by how much he wants the fantasy of the relationship. The agonizing roller coaster we watch him go through in this ep did a lot of work to elevate and expand his character. (Oh hi Green!) Poor Pat: thinks he’s teasing his straight boss, is actually slow dancing with future husband. Happens to the best of us.

La Pluie (Sat iQIYI) ep 8 of 10 - Don’t kiss someone else. Just argh. Dumb plot divice. I expected better of you LP. Everyone is so overdramatic and overreacting. I wonder if (in addition to all of the other tropes this narrative is scrutinizing) it’s examining bisexual identity through Pat + his ex? Like, this episode is actually about trusting the bisexual to choose his gay lover when he has the so called “option of being normal.” That soulmate is an allegory for gayness & identity & choice (and whether we even have a choice in who we love and are attracted to) and the interplay all of this has with one's own perception of self and other's perception of you… Or am I giving it too much credit? Meanwhile... l flipping adore the love triangle twist, and really wonder if they’re gonna have the guts to take this aspect to its inevitable triangular conclusion. Such a good show.

Be My Favorite (Fri YouTube) ep 4 of 10? - Screw all y’all, I’m eloping with Pair & Max. We forming a thrupple and pretending Jittirain doesn’t exist. Trash watch here.

Luminous Solution (Sat Gaga) ep 4 of 6 - I love the high school boys so much it’s scary: flirting, biting, frankness, roughhousing + lap sitting! Also messy high school gay triangle. Gah. All of this for little-old me?! I was mad every time we jumped forward in time (to the adults) or whatever the hell is going on. Thank goodness this is only 6 eps.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love Tractor (Korea Weds iQIYI) eps 3-4 of 8 - I LOVE IT SO MUCH. IT IS EVERYTHING. SHUT UP I AM FERRIL FOR THE BEAUTIFUL CITY BOY & HIS YOUNG FARMER. Come on. Korea. Have mercy? Plus some language play? Slayed. Right... the episode; This show reminds me so much of a Korean style Restart After Come Back Home. I’m not even slightly mad about it. It’s the BL I didn’t even know to ask for. Soap opera tumble and baby in hospital is SUCH a princess moment and I am living for it. Although the reversal is even cuter, princess turns out to be a caring tsundere Dom. And then obligatory water-hose frolicking! Oh, stop, you. (Allegory much? i being to think hose spraying is just another way of BL saying... well... hose spraying) AND “there is only one bed but they slept together on the floor together anyway”. These boys are hitting all my favorite tropes. BL please never lose your sense of childish wonder. And... the hose spraying is nice too.

Tokyo in April AKA Shigatsu no Tokyo wa (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 1 of 8 - Based on a NSFW yaoi, this is a reunion romance that takes place in an office. Look, this is a weird little 2nd chance at love that reminds me a bit of Our Dating Sim. But it’s more traditional yaoi office romance with evil boss and inter-departmental politics. The leads are cute childhood (almost) sweethearts and I adore it unreasonably already.

Vian the series (Vietnam YouTube ) ep 6 of 12 - Vertical video prod is stupid. I’m sorry young people. Stop it. BUT the cuddling is cute. Christ BV can kiss. Is there anyone he doesn’t have amazing chemistry with? Oh the sunshade trope I haven’t seen that one in forever. Also clearly his character has a type, and that type = ultra-bitch.

Stupid Genius (Vietnam Fri YouTube) ep 2 of 6 - It’s fine.

Naked Dinner AKA Zenra Meshi (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 9 of 12 - Oh dear. Baby is hurt and rejected. Faen fatal knows her competition is a boy, she also knows what jealousy looks like. But this baby has his own boy. This is all feeling rather Thai BL. There’s even an ep 11 of DOOM coming up next.

It’s Airing But ...

House of Stars (Thai Mon iQIYI) 12 eps - I bounced at ep 3. Will binge if told it is worth it at end.

Stay (Pinoy YouTube) 7 eps - It’s mostly in English and set in LA so I’m not bothering but the first one did drop.

Ever After (Pinoy ????) - I got nothing.

Takumi-kun Series 6: Nagai Nagai Monogatari no Hajimari no Asa (Japan Sun ????) 10 eps - NO ONE ASKED FOR THIS and no, I have no idea where to get it, why would I? (Say it with me everyone: Oh Japan, must you?*)

Boys Love Omegaverse (Japan ????) - honestly tho? Who tf cares? You’ll still tell me if you find it, because inquiring minds... Irony of this airing at the same time as Takumi-kun. Full circle much, Japan?

Ended This Week

Tin Tem Jai special showed up on Gaga as ep 11 & 12 under the original show. (Indebted to spies reporting in.) Also on YouTube. What was that I just watched? Did I watch something? Was there anything? I suppose the bathtub scene was cute. Subs are bonkers. Seriously. Do. Not. Bother.

Our Dining Table AKA Bokura no Shokutaku (Japan) - pay attention TTJ THIS is how you do a special. But I’m gonna do a series review, here ya go: I was always gonna love the show if they stuck to the manga (which is very dear to my heart). And they did, paralleling it almost exactly. It’s a quiet & cozy little parable of found family alleviating loneliness. Possibly too slow for some but definitely high up there for me with the best of what Japan can do (like Restart After Come Back Home), it’s only flaw (if I dare say such a thing) is that it is not really “romantic.” Lovely & sweet but the romance beats are being used to build a family relationship, not just couple intimacy, it’s OK with me, but not totally BL. 9/10

This gives bad boy hazer Dino an opportunity to hit on Rak at last. From The Yearbook people so I will not watch this as it airs. After Remember Me? Never again with them.

lost and found

So in something of a rush this late morning, it came up that someone needed to run up to a tractor repair joint up in Valley Falls area (13.2 mi distant by Google Maps) to get a new (used) tire and new (in the box) tube put on an old (like way old) rim, so that the water wagon (it’s a thousand-gallon tank, which is no joke) could roll again.

So I went with Farmkid, because it’s unskilled work and she could be kept safely occupied. It’s just far enough that it’s a solid half-hour drive, you gotta pick one way or the other around the reservoir. Real scenic, either way, not bad traffic.

Now, I had no time to prepare, we were coming up hard against the time crunch of lunch and then Farmkid’s busy afternoon social schedule, but I managed to get myself and herself together-- got my kindle so I could read to Kid while they worked on the tire, got her notebook so she could work on the novel she’s writing on the way there and back, since I could workshop it out loud as she’s composing-- that’s the issue, she always wants input, and I’m usually busy with something else when she’s asking, but in the car, I’m a perfect captive audience!

So, anyway, I normally like more time to mentally organize myself for an outing, but we were doing all right, and I made my little plan-- need to gas up the car first, as I hadn’t put fuel in it since Buffalo, BIL handed me a credit card to pay off the balance he’s got at the tractor shop, and off we went.

So we went to the Stewarts right around the corner, I put gas in the car in my usual method, put the wallet and notebook on the roof of the car, pull the notebook down and begin writing in it while fueling, take the notebook and wallet together back to the driver’s seat to write down the mileage, put the wallet on the passenger seat and the notebook in its compartment. But I was talking to Farmkid as I did it, and I remember specifically writing down the mileage but I don’t remember where I put the wallet, don’t recollect between talking to her and getting in the car whether I put it into my purse or onto the seat or into the notebook compartment...

So, you might have an inkling where this story’s going. As I was driving, I realized I’d forgotten to get Kid a mask; I have a spare I keep now tucked in the passenger sunshade, and I had to flip it down to see that yes, I do have a second spare up there, phew, so she could wear it.

Got to Temco, had Kid haul in the tube neatly in its box, carried the tire (heavy) and the rim (super fucking heavy) on my own, nobody in there’s wearing masks but there’s a hilarious sign. Hang on, I’m going to append the photo I took.

Howie, the guy who runs the place, is the dad of two women who were two of my sisters’ lifelong best friends, and has had that long gray beard since the 80s. The other gray beard guy is his best friend since small times, with whom my mother recently had some dealings-- he’s involved in the caretaking of some local cemetery, and my mom as town historian has corresponded extensively with him but hadn’t met him in person until recently.

Anyhow, there was much debate about putting that tire and that tube on this rim, they didn’t think it would work, maybe it would, they called BIL, there was much disussion, eventually they said they’d work on it and see what they couldn’t do, and I said I’d go wait in the car.

Farmkid and I sat in the car and I was reading to her from my Kindle while she energetically climbed in and out the windows and such, and I suddenly felt my purse and realized I couldn’t feel my wallet in it, and then gosh, had I put it on the seat? I thought I’d put it on the seat, so I put down the Kindle and went to look.

Notebook’s in its compartment, but by itself. Car seat has crap on it but no wallet. Nothing on the floor. It’s definitely not in my purse. Well fuck.

I called Stewart’s and the manager picked up and said “oh gosh! I’ll go look and be right back and tell you if I see anything out there!”

So I’m sitting there listening to occasional background noise on the line at the convenience store, when sure enough Gray Beard Guy Who Isn’t Howie came out the door and asked if I could pull around the other side to get the tire into the back of my car. So I did, and of course my car’s bluetooth picked up the call and then when the Stewarts guy came back on the line he couldn’t hear me over all the car noises, so he hung up. Fuck. Probably it was a no, though.

So I got the tire, and said, “I can’t pay right this minute,” expecting some kind of fuss, but Gray Beard Not Howie (I think his name is John) was like “oh we’re really not worried, we know where you’re at”, so I drove away with no further ado, and Farmkid eagerly kept her eyes peeled the whole drive back to look and see if my wallet had blown off the roof of the car somewhere in this twelve miles.

It had not.

We stopped at Stewart’s, and I found the manager, who said regretfully that he had not been able to find it. I then had to explain to Farmkid that in fact no it was still missing, and I was in trouble-- because sure, there was money in there, but there were credit cards that someone could steal, and also my driver’s license, which proves that I’m legally allowe to operate my car, and you can’t just go to the DMV and get a new one, you have to make an appointment and it takes months now what with the epidemic and all.

Farmkid, very sweetly and concernedly, offered to loan me all the money she had, which was “a gajillion dollars!” (I happen to know she has about thirty dollars in a piggy bank.) I thanked her and told her it was very sweet of her but it wasn’t necessary, I just was going to be in trouble if I needed anything on my drive back to Buffalo.

So we got home, a bit late but still in time for lunch, and BIL quick went and paused his credit card-- apparently it lets you suspend it so it’s still active for like, recurring payments, but can’t be used for anything unexpected.

I was just mustering myself to figure out my bank’s phone number to see if I could do anything like that, when my phone, in my hand, rang, with a private number.

My phone number’s not anywhere on my wallet, so I thought it couldn’t possibly be related, but I answered, and it was a state trooper. He asked if I was me, and I said yes, and he asked if I was nearby, and I said yes, and he said “you lost your wallet at Stewarts”, and I said “I sure did, sir,” and when I told him where I was, he said “Oh, I know where that is, I’ll be right over.”

Sure enough, a state police car pulled into the driveway about five minutes later.

A retired trooper had found the wallet in the Stewarts parking lot, and had brought it over to the trooper depot just up the street. “How’d I find you,” he said, “that’s what you want to know, isn’t it?”

“Kinda, yeah,” I said, “but I thought maybe Stewarts had my number in their call history.”

“Nope!” he said. “I just Googled you. You’ve got a lot of personal information online, on the public Internet! Did you used to live over on [road my parents live on]?”

“Yes,” I said, “does it have their phone number too?”

“Yeah, I figured I’d try that one next,” he said.

I sighed. “Well, I mean, that’s how it works nowadays,” I said. “And it worked out, this time.”

“Yeah,” he said, “but it’s sort of creepy.” He handed me my wallet, and said “Oh, see if anything’s missing.”

I unzipped it. “Well,” I said resignedly, “all the cash is gone, but I don’t expect the person who took it’s the one who turned it in.” I shrugged. “Times are hard, probably whoever took it needed it more than me, I’ll be all right,” which is true, but annoyingly, I did have kind of a lot of cash in there. Oh well.

I don’t have to figure out how to replace my license in this stupid pandemic, so I won’t cry over a hundred and fifty bucks or so. A couple of weeks ago, that would’ve been devastating, but-- and i never used to carry much money, but my car got broken into a couple of times, and I just don’t have anywhere else to keep money since I live out of my car nowadays. So oh well.

But I am DONE for the day, I am not going to attempt to have any thoughts in my head for the rest of the day. Sheesh.

Málaga, Spain

For many of us, the last time it felt like the whole world was having the same conversation was on September 11th, 2001. For me, it was also the day I left London for Faedis, Italy. A few people around me on the train were murmuring about some kind an attack. When I got the airport, it was so quiet. People stood frozen in front of televisions watching two plumes of black smoke rise into a blue sky.

I’d met Marco while he was in London for a couple days to sell some wine. We both quoted Biggie Smalls and the Big Lebowski. He was just getting the family vineyard going as a proper business. I had no plans beyond the next weekend. I said I liked the idea of working on a vineyard. He said, cool.

The house was a kitchen and a bedroom above the cantina. Almost everything inside was older than me. The roof in the bedroom sloped down to the floor. We opened a few bottles and ate dinner.

While insects buzzed and chirped outside the windows, we watched our world reorganize itself towards endless war on television. It was cold that night. We slept under scratchy blankets on little beds made during times of less abundance.

I stayed until the end of October. We often ate lunch in Orsaria with his parents, Paolo and Miriam. I liked them. They acted as if Marco had just found a younger brother they had somehow misplaced. I also liked their house. It was big, beautiful and warm. They had comfortable sofas and a computer for sending sentimental emails and downloading mp3s.

I did my best to match their enthusiasm for every course. E buona la pasta, Tito? Si, si... buonissimo! Marco, perché non mangia di più? When I got sick, they had a doctor come to the house. He brought a stethoscope in a leather bag. Nonna introduced me to grappa as medicine. The first glass felt like hot wax going down my throat.

I annoyed Marco with my plans to marry his sister Barbara, even though she thought I was a sfigato. We drove down gravel roads to parties in little bars where his friends played reggae like some of mine did back home.

No matter how late we stayed out, or how many bottles we left empty on the table, Marco was up with the sun and ready to work. He’d drink flat Coca-Cola before his coffee. Some fuel to get the engine started, man. Good for the stomach.

Winemaking is agriculture, science, art, design, engineering, sales, marketing, gambling, guessing…. When there aren’t vines to trim, there are tanks to check, fertilizers to buy, grapes to take to the laboratory, grass to cut, cases to deliver, bottles to label, fill, cork... People we’d meet throughout the day said, buon lavoro as goodbye.

Whenever something could go wrong, it often did. Marco’s momentary frustration would quickly just become something else to laugh about. Stay calm. Piano, piano. We have to be the Tom Cruise of the situation, man.

Sometimes he would sketch out the plans for our day on scrap paper. Little cartoons of machines, grapes, tanks and tubes with arrows between them. Numbers and notes floating around the edges. He never drew us. We were always moving anyway.

During the vendemmia a crowd arrived to help. Friends, traveling workers and his family, of course. Nonno laughed and shook his head at me and my allergies. I never really got the hang of the tractor, but I loved cutting the grapes free. We stacked crates and tipped them into presses. They all knew far more about my country than I did about theirs. We debated the merits of Sublime, compared Berlusconi to Bush and retold our favorite Simpsons episodes. Every day we all ate lunch together on the patio beneath a sunshade of interwoven vines.

The wine we made went to tables all around Friuli-Venezia-Giulia and parts of Europe. I brought a few bottles with me when I left for Torino. Some went to rest on shelves in the cantina.

The last time I was in Faedis was in August 2016. Marco still sings while he’s walking between the rows of vines. 'Biggie Biggie Biggie can’t you see…’ I mean come on. man. He was really the best. You know it. The best... ‘It was all a dream. I used to read Word-Up Magazine…’

The TV in the kitchen is gone. There’s a wood stove there now. They watch movies projected on the wall of the room we used to sleep in. A futon for guests has replaced the little beds. Marco had remodeled the house to make room for another proper bedroom.

He dug out some grimy bottles of our wine. It was six years younger than I was when we made it. I didn’t get to see Barbara. Paulo and Miriam’s house is now a bed and breakfast. Go there if you’re ever near Orsaria. It’s even more beautiful now.

Friuili is 300 km from Lombardia. In February, Marco and I started talking and texting about the virus. I’d already started veering away from people on the sidewalk. There was a movie I wanted to see in the cinema, but I didn’t go. I avoided the port full of cruise ship passengers. But I still went out.

On March 6, I’d had an internal debate about going to the botanical gardens on my day off. It’s outdoors. It’s low season. It’ll be empty. It’s windy and warm. And anyway, Málaga isn’t Bergamo. I rode my bike there, and while I was locking it, I reconsidered again. I saw a couple walking down from the mountains across the road. Should I just hike up this trail instead? Instead I went inside. I’d only been in summer before. I wanted to see what it looked like at the beginning of spring.

While I was having my coffee, a woman sat at the other end of the picnic table. When she started blowing her nose, I told myself it would be silly and rude to get up. Then she started coughing. I looked at the unwrapped sandwich I had brought from home. My open water thermos. Mentally measuring metres and wind speed. Still feeling like I was being ridiculous. Her daughter brought the drinks and sat down. Ecco la tua mamma... I picked up my things and moved to another table.

I spent the next half hour telling myself I was being paranoid while trying to focus on the plants in the sunshine. Doing impossible math in my head. There are 60 million Italians.... they could have been traveling for weeks... maybe they live here... anyone could have it... there are so many old people here... I heard that man couch under is hat... it could have been on the coffee cup anyway… the bartender washes them in the sink... how hot is that water?

I walked to the end of the gardens where a gazebo was built for the view of the cathedral and the sea. I watched turtles swimming around the little pond. Marco texted me. Stay at home. I called him to tell him about the Italian women and my paranoia. They walked by while I was on the phone, and I moved upwind. Still feeling ridiculous.

He was calm as always. The main problem is there aren’t enough beds for the, how do you say... the reanimation. The people they are just fucking dying in the corridors. They don’t know for sure who is the patient zero, but the patient one or two. He’s a 38 years old guy. He’s been on the fucking respirator for weeks. In Cividale there are three cases. It’s crazy, man. What we have to do is just fucking close everything like they did in China. But that will never happen you know man, because this is Europe.

Two days later the Italian government locked down Lombardia and fourteen other provinces. The following day they extended to it include the entire country. Within a week, most of Europe followed suit.

Seven weeks later the Italian government agrees with many of you about the essential nature of wine. So Marco is still working. Since the lockdown started, he’s been in the hospital twice. He was in a car accident in March, and then something more serious happened in April.

He sent me a selfie from the hospital bed. I called him and he answered laughing. His wife had thought he was faking a stroke to play a trick on her. Fucking unbelievable, man. I tried to drink the juice. You know in the morning, the orange juice, and I put it all over my t-shirt. I couldn’t put it to my mouth. I couldn’t say nothing. I was like blah, blah, blah. My brain was no good. Anyway, how are you, are you good?

The hospitals in Udine aren’t overwhelmed, but he was only allowed one visitor per day. He asked his mother to bring his laptop, so he could get some work done. Everybody say rest. Rest, rest, rest. Okay, I’m in the bed.

When he was discharged he sent me a photo with his wife and baby walking between the vines. Their daughter, Emilia, has unruly red hair. In every photo she looks overjoyed and a little surprised to have found herself inside her new body. Are you ok? Super ok, man. Super ok. They were all smiles. Glowing in the green grass. Paola looks far too smart to have fallen for either of us back when we would try to out-charm each other every time a woman arrived at the vineyard.

Marco’s still getting up with the sun. But fewer and fewer Italians have money for wine. He’s not loading pallets with boxes bound for dinner parties in Oslo or Chicago. No American tourists will be giggling at his accent this summer. The local restaurants are dark and full of stale air.

For almost twenty years, whenever I’ve called Marco to talk about moving or just getting away, he reminds me of my house in Faedis.

Next to the front door there are photographs of family and friends working together since long before the days of color. Behind the house, up on top of the hill, there is a little shack with the year 1867 written above the door. It will still be there once our world has reorganized itself yet again.

So will we.

11. HOURS. @ the beach today.

9am til 8pm, I was at Port Stanley beach. I am sunburnt, I have 3 new rocks, I smell like sunshine and banana boat sunblock and lake water and I feel GLORIOUS! Here are some photos I took, before I got bored of technology and went to play in the lake and read books and make a friendship bracelet in the shade.

I call this machine the Smoothie Tractor.

So pristiiiine. There was like, ONE person (besides me). He was VERY tanned and jogging.

This little clump of sand dune/windbreak + scrub was my shade for most of the day. I’m getting a sunshade for the next time I go. Barring finding a free giant umbrella on the roadside, I’ll bring my tent.

My enjoyments this day.

This was at about 11:30am, when I realised I had had ZERO sunblock or shade for 2.5 hours in the HAWTHAWTHEAT and moved. There were SO many people there today.

It was a good day.
