Transformers: Mosaic #444 - "Learning Curve"

wada sez: Why the connection between Crosshairs and Wheeljack? Per Villa on deviantART: “I just thought they were "related" because of the similar faces and the engineering interests”. Ed Pirrie often takes inspiration from Geoff Senior for his artwork, and this strip is no exception. On deviantART he noted: “I based Wheeljack's robot mode on his design in the War Within comics, only less bulky.” That robot on the very right in the first panel is actually Afterburner, recoloured as an original characters because technically speaking in cartoon continuity Afterburner wasn’t built yet at the point of this flashback! The revised version of this strip would take this idea even further by recolouring Wideload as well, who first appeared in the cartoon’s fourth season. Preview, clean inks and Italian verison below.

Omake: Death by Smelting Pit
Cybertron, 783 AD
General Obsidia hovered down Cybertron's halls as he entered the throne room. Before him, sitting on her throne with a bored look on her face, was the Empress of Destruction, Megaempress. "Lady Megaempress," he announced his presence, kneeling before her. "I have news from the front lines."

"General Obsidia," Megaempress acknowledged, "What is your news?"
"Our army of Ninja bots and newly created Combiners successfully conquered the planet Remnant." General Obsidia reported.
"As expected," Megaempress smiled softly, musing about how she would use this "Dust" to finally crush her archenemy, the Gaian female named Solus Prime(or Aitō Hahaoya, as she called herself, but who really cared about that?). Obsidia wasn't done reporting, it turned out.
"Our Elite Vehicons sustained heavy damage, unfortunately," he continued somberly. Everyone in the throne room became silent, taking a moment to mourn the loss of their comrades.
"Such is the price of war..." Megaempress whispered, tearing up somewhat. She then stretched out her left servo, pointing at Obsidia. "Have them sent to the repair bay secured with the knowledge that they have earned my eternal gratitude."
Obsidia nodded as he obeyed, "At once, my Empress..." He transformed and flew to the troops to notify them of the news. Megaempress smiled softly as she sat on her throne and caressed her pet turbofox on its head.
-----------------
Meanwhile, the wounded Elite Vehicons limped towards the door that read "Repair Bay" on it, opened, entered, and realized too late that they were inside a smelting chamber. They were quickly melted into slag.
----------------
"Ma'am?"
"Commander Obisdia!" Megaempress replied, turning her attention toward him with a soft smile on her face. "I trust our Vehicons have recovered well?" Obsidia swallowed a lump that was lodged in his voicebox. "What is it?" She asked, noticing his anxiety. "Speak your mind,"
"That's just it, my lady," he began, already nervous and unsure of his fate. "It would seem that the door to the infirmary is in fact, the door to a smelting chamber... So the Vehicons are no longer online, they're now offline because they got turned into molten slag..."
Megaempress' optic grew wide at this revelation. "What?!" she exclaimed with shock and horror. "How could this have happened?" She looked at Obsidia with an enraged look. "I order you to investigate!"
"At once, Lady Megaempress," Obsidia turned to leave only to have some lingering doubts. Being the high-ranking General he was, he voiced them. "You.. wouldn't have wanted them offlined would you, ma'am?"
Megaempress stared at him with subtle distrust in her optics. "What are you implying?" She asked, her voice shifting into a dangerous tone along with her pet turbofox growling.
"I'm saying that maybe it's easier for you to kill them... than to heal them?" Was Obsidia's answer. He was now sweating energon from his frame, scared of what might become of him.
Megaempress gasped, surprise on her face still present. "General," She began, "I am aghast!" She then sighed in resignation, "If you think I should be investigated, then take it up with the impartial investigation committee."
General Obsidia nodded. "At once, My Lady..." He transformed into his altmode and quickly flew off, intending to get to the bottom of this mystery. It was a quick flight, as he noticed the sign that led to his intended destination. Now to see what's going on... He thought before opening the door.
Upon entering, the door behind Obsidia suddenly locked itself, making the former General realize too late that he was inside a smelting pit just like those Elite Vehicon troops, ultimately being reduced to molten slag. _____________
"Well, that about does it!" a Constructicon named Wideload exclaimed, a bright smile on his smile as he rubbed his hands. "71 mismarked doors, all of them leading directly into a smelting pit!"
A dark smile emerged from Megaempress as she heard this news. "Excellent work, Wideload," she replied, "Now even these very walls cannot contain my cruelty!" She let an evil cackle, lightning seemingly appearing from out of nowhere.
If he were unnerved by this, Wideload would not have shown it. "So..." he coughed, "About my paycheck..."
Megaempress snapped from her thoughts, looking at Wideload before realizing what he had just asked. "Oh!" she exclaimed, momentarily thinking, "You can pick it up at Accounts Payable!" She replied with a supposedly friendly smile.
However, unlike the late General Obsidia, Wideload seemed sharper than he looked. "Lady Megaempress, ma'am" he began, "I don't wanna sound suspicious but 'Accounts Payable' is one of the doors that I redirected toward a smelting pit," he raised an optic ridge at her, "You wouldn't be trying to cheat me out of my hard-earned pay, would you?"
Realizing her intentions had been found out, Megaempress quickly came up with another idea. She laughed, playfully waving a finger at him, "Wideload," She commented, "You are a clever mech!" The Empress of Destruction giggled. "You got me!" She pulled out a small cloth bundle, placing it into Wideload's hand, "Here you go!"
Wideload, not one to leave it to chance, opened it, seeing nothing but electrum coins with the letter C on them. "These are Cybercoins," He pointed out, showing them to Megaempress, "They're only good at gift shops!" A frown formed on his face as he looked at his leader, questioning her sanity and validity as a leader.
"Do spend them all in one place!" Megaempress added, a seemingly friendly smile plastered onto her face.
--------------------------------------------
Widload grumbled as he rolled down the halls, feeling like he had just been cheated out of his payment. "That no-good..." He transformed into his robot mode as he reached his destination, a door that held a sign reading "Gift Shop"
Continuing to grumble, he entered the Gift Shop, "Why did I have to get the Gift Shop..." The Constructicon mumbled before closing the doors, only to instantly scream his Spark out as he was painfully turned inside out due to an unfortunate encounter with the former Autobot Mnemosurgen-turned-serial killer: Sunder.
However, Sunder was currently locked up, his limbs restrained. So how did Sunder turn Wideload inside-out?
See, Sunder had a unique skill ability as he could gaze into his victim's optics and do remote mnemosurgery surgery of the most advanced tasks, even shutting down basic functions such as transforming. And forget Wideload did, for when he tried to escape he used his Conversion Cog, snuffing out his own Spark by turning himself inside-out.
A passing ST3VE heard Wideload's screams and briefly considered investigating. Then, he came to the reasonable conclusion that his life was more important than some unfortunate soul. He quickly shook his head before the Vehicon sped off to resume his work.
---------------------------------------
"Well, that about does it!" Another Constructicon said, "The Gift Shop is now a room that leads directly to Sunder's cell!"
Megaempress clasped her hands together, a smile on her face, "Excellent work, Wideload!" she replied.
The Constructicon raised an optic ridge and corrected her, "Buckethead," he said, confused as to whom Megaempress was referring.
"-I mean Buckethead!" The Decepticon leader caught on, realizing what she had just said.
"Who's Wideload?" Buckhead asked, scratching his head. Then it clicked: " Are you working with my brother?" he inquired.
Megaempress looked to the side, "Not anymore..." She answered, doing anything not to meet the Constructicon's gaze.
If he was suspicious of his Empress of Destruction, Buckethead did not show it. At all. As in, he didn't suspect that the Camien in front of him knew something that he didn't. "That's a bit ominous," Buckethead pointed before shrugging it off. "But, no matter. How's about my paycheck?"
"Oh!" Megaempress went, realizing he wasn't going to press further. Even better, She thought as her pet Turbofox purred while being petted. I can do what I originally wanted to do with Wideload!"You can pick it up at Accounts Payable!" She replied, knowing full well, what would result from that.
Still not suspicious of his leader's intentions, Buckethead smiled, "I see no issue with that, my lady," He replied, leaving the office and traveling down the halls. After many twists and turns, Buckethead found the door that led to Accounts Payable. Oblivious to what awaited him, Buckethead opened the door and entered, only realizing too late that he was inside a smelting chamber when the door slammed shut. "That rotten Glitch-AAAAAGGGGHHHHHH!" His last words would be before his processor was fried.
-------------------------------------------------------
"Lady Megaempress?" A Vehicon named R0B3RT went as he stood in front of Megaempress's throne.
"Yes?" Megaempress replied, acknowledging her soldier's presence. "What is it?"
R0B3RT scratched his head, searing for a way to not get slagged. "Rumor has it that you're sending random Cons into Smelting Pits and turning them inside out," He took a deep breath before asserting himself. "I think I speak for every Decepticon when I say that..." He looked into her optics doing his very best to not leak some transmission fluid. "This is bad for morale," He shuddered, shutting his optics and expecting to be shot on the spot for his bold words.
Instead, the Decepticon Leader nodded, listening intently to his statement. "I see," she finally spoke after being quiet for a few clicks. "Why don't you take this coupon, and head on towards the newly installed Acid Pits Spa?" She gestured to her turbofox, who grabbed a few slips of paper with her jaws and gently placed them into R0B3RT's servo.
R0B3RT blinked, confused by this action of generosity. "I'm uh... not really the spa type," He protested.
"I insist," The Empress of Destruction spoke, this time with a seemingly more threatening tone in her voice.
The Vehicon knew better than to press his luck further.
---------------------------------------------
R0B3RT cautiously explored the western wing of Decepticon HQ, not wishing to find a very poor end. He was paranoid. Why wouldn't he? His leader, the femme that every mech and femme in the Decepticons looked up to, had just bribed him and subtly threatened him to take said bribe. What if she's going to make an example of me? R0B3RT thought as he drove down a street. For all I know, this is a trap! Stopping at the spa, the Vehicon transformed. Looking down at his coupon, he took a deep breath and gulped as he quickly pressed the door, expecting death on the other side.
Instead, R0B3RT got a very pleasant surprise. Decepticons of all shapes and sizes were talking to each other as they dipped themselves into the weak Acid pits, cleaning them of rust and any other ailments that would be plaguing them. R0B3RT saw Captain Leozack getting a massage from one of the femmes that looked a lot like that Camien Nightbird that had recently left on that secret mission.
That new recruit D-16 was there as well, sitting in one of the acid pits, having the time of his life.
R0B3RT sighed with relief as he entered the spa, realizing that he wasn't going to die. I need a little privacy. He thought to himself. But where to find something that can do that? He noticed a room that read "Private Bathroom" I could use a leak. R0B3RT thought as he approached the door. If he had a face, R0B3RT knew that he would be smiling with joy. Opening the door, the Vehicon entered before seeing nothing there. "Oh FRAG!" He screamed before the door suddenly closed and proceeded to melt him into slag.
-----------------------------------
Steam Hammer put his hands to his hip and scowled. "I ain't finishing no spa until you tell me what happened to my fellow Constructicons!" he demanded.
Megaempress groaned as she banged her head against the backrest of her throne. The one time I tried to be merciful and giving, She thought. this scrap happens!
Being a leader was tough.

Other Cybertronians: Jetfire, Goshooter and Cab, Omega Supreme, the Spychangers, Guard City, Impactor, Autobot Topspin, Autobot Whirl, Roadbuster, Twintwist, and the Minicons
The Gotchard Cast and their Cybertronians friends have set off to save Christmas but, they cause some accidents to happen during their mission to save Christmas. Some of these Incidents are as follows:
When Spanner and his Cybertronian allies were delivering gifts at Northern Base, a dragon woke up after Spanner's group delivered the gifts and to stop it from attacking, Steamhammer uses his shovel arm to sucker punch the dragon in the face, causing the dragon to de-transform and reveal their true form, Ise. After getting sucker punched, Ise begins to cry because he was just punched by a strong left hook, and this alerts all of Northern Base and the Cybertronians stationed there. Realizing they have been compromised, Astrotrain tells all of them to leave now and get out.
Lachesis and her group went to deliver the presents of the King-Ohgers and while in Gokkan, Lachesis, Scylla, Brawl, Cloudraker, Runabout, and Skid-Z saw an asleep Rita, Himeno, and Jeramie with a tied up and petrified Moffun! Gira and he screamed at them to untie him but, they just closed the door on them to not question what that was.
Renge, Sabimaru, and their Cybertronian friends were delivering the presents Kyoryugers, Ryusoulgers, Go-Ongers, Kiramagers, Go-Busters, Ninningers, Shinkengers, and Zyuohgers, but during these deliveries, they accidentally destroyed parts of the Sentai bases or in the Go-Busters case, accidentally destroyed part of the Gattai they use.
Houou/Original Kaguya and his Cybertronian group of dumbasses delivered the Decade Cast presents without any issues but when it came to delivering presents to Shinnosuke, let's just say Shinnosuke's living room gets totaled.
During a trip to deliver presents to the other Riders, Hopper1 holds a mistletoe under Houtaro and Rinne, and while blushing, Ransack and Rust Dust make Houtaro and Rinne. Which causes both of them not able to look at each other.
When Rinne and her squad of Cybertronians were delivering presents to Emu, Pounce accidentally knocks down Emu's Christmas tree on to him and it zaps Emu, hurting him and knocking him out.
An unrelated incident and after delivering the Revice, Fourze and Gavv Casts' presents with little issue, Houtaro, Hopper1 and their Cybertronian pals go to deliver presents to the W Cast but when they deliver the presents, Ransack and Hopper1 and go to see what is causing that noise. When they go into the garage they see Philip getting beaten to a pulp by multiple Cat Yo-kai and Mick for something they don't know about.
Jetfire, while delivering presents, accidentally crashed into a house in the Philippines, but thankfully the family was but they were terrified by a giant talking robot jet crashing into their house. The person that lives goes by some random name known as Curry, Kairi, or something like that.
Another unrelated incident that happened was Shockwave forcing the Science Squad minus George and Philip to be of average intelligence, meaning they are as smart as people like Gentaro and Sougo.
During all of this, the Gotchard Cast and their pals accidentally and unknowingly destroyed parts of Japan by trying to give presents.
So the Gotchard Cast and their pals have saved Christmas! Ignoring the carnage they have caused throughout all of Japan.
So what are the Riders' reaction to the Gotchard Cast and their small army of Cybertronians saving Christmas but with some carnage occurring because of the Gotchard Cast and their Cybertronians?
Never again. Just... Never again

With my CoH art all posted, I'm going to start posting some of my Transformers designs!
Me and some friends have two Transformers campaigns going on right now, one Autobot and one Decepticon, and these are our characters in each of them!
Hyperbeam, Wideload, Telecom, Cloudskip.
Killdozer, Solenoid, Havoc, Puncture.
And these are some backup characters that me and one of the other people in the campaign have made in the case of one of our characters' Sudden, Untimely Demise.
I've also done some redesigns of canon characters to fit in with the 'official show artstyle' as that same friend has deigned to call it.

|#...triple changer tracks??|
Excuse this, when I learn to format and make those tiny screen captures I don't know, I'm a honorable grandma. But it just triggered the Gameplay Rant.
So. The thing is, Tracks is not exactly a triple changer, but due to the lack of other information he might as well be.
Essence, the system Hasbro's official licensed RPGs run on, does not have either a singular class or a dual race/class system. The basic Essence requires a character to have essentially, heh, backstory/motivation, additional backstory/job and role/specialization. But there comes in the first piece of clunk, as two of three categories appear basically redundant in Transformers' edition specifically. But that's not the issue today.
The second piece of clunk, which brought us the problem of Tracks, is that one of the roles/jobs/classes is Modemaster, which encompasses... Triple & more Changers AND Soundwave/Blaster type tape decks. If this seems counterintuitive, well, we're in the same boat. I think the original idea was "doing a lot of unusual things with altmodes", but to dump people with multiple alts and people with partners and minions into the same class is just...
Anyway. While Tracks basically is never mentioned otherwise, he is specifically noted as a Modemaster, and while the class technically may include people with unusual altmode elements like wings on a car, it is equally possible that Tracks is one of the two other notable unrelated archetypes, and since Tracks is definitely is not a cassette player, he must be a Triple Changer instead.
It might be a joke, if Tracks was mentioned literally anywhere else aside from this one time and some illustrations. Gnaw the Sharkticon has more flavor text!
@arceespinkgun
Quite besadly, Llyra was only mentioned in a letter by Hi-Q as having being binary-bonded. Whoever her partner is, I can only say it's not Arcee, as Leniad - the name of Arcee's headmaster unit from Titans Return toyline and Daniel backwards, as the toy homages the cartoon finale - is mentioned right before her in the same sentence.
Hauler is one of the Devastator's Autobot components, but the others are Wideload, Quickmix and Scoop. Scoop is there because of IDW1, where he replaced Prowl, while the other three are a Beast Wars Uprising reference (yes, Hauler included) - they formed Devastator there too, and other Uprising Constructicons are mentioned right before as Decepticons. Sorenson's writing, you see.
Things that happened in the Official Transformers RPG's lore.
So, I've got my hands on all three rulebooks of the official TF RPG. And also the G. I. Joe RPG, but that's irrelevant right now. My batch did not include the crossover rulebook, sadly.
Therefore, notes on the lore and other details in the "basic" canon, because TFWiki did not go into the details, that grew into this list of odd events mentioned.
First thing first, the general continuity is very close to Cyberverse or G1 Fanon, having the basic outline of G1 cartoon, but with details and chunks of backstory pulled from elsewhere - Optimus is a former archivist/data clerk, Bumblebee is a sportscar, et cetera.
To note, there's a somewhat short introductory "who-is-who" list and basic character sheets with profiles both.
Well, I've already got my whiplash, so it's your turn now.
There's something very funky going on with Devastator. Prowl's introduction blurb directly states that something Combiner Wars-esque/Prowlstator has happened, and reads as implying that Autobots hijacked Devastator. By all accounts, Scrapper is alive, making it a possible genuine canonical instance of Prowlastator with Scrapper alive, but the Constructions as whole are placed with the Decepticons. But, Tergamax mentions that among people that were at any moment replacement parts of Devastator there were five Autobots, Prowl included. What happened?
The "who is who" listing for Autobots includes declarations of jobs/roles/traits. Some of these are notable: 1) Ironhide is a chemist 2) Swerve is in Public Relations 3) Rung is Psy-Ops 4) Perceptor is specifically an engineer 5) Bumblebee is noted as "Hero of the People". Must be popular.
Speaking of roles, monochromatic SIC of the day is Jazz, who is also a strategist now.
All of the people in the introductory list are implied to be the Ark crew, and there are problems regarding space travel for Autobots right now. This means that Anode, Lug, those two kids from IDW2, Elita's team and Glyph are on the crew.
Rattrap is a Decepticon.
Optimus Prime has a thick Iaconian accent in Cybertronian. It turns "Teletraan" into "Teletron".
Character sheets include a list of languages that character speaks. Some of these past the standart English+Cybertronian are completely random. Optimus Prime speaks Dutch. Korean is surprisingly popular. In what could be a nice callback, Slingshot has Arabic. The only two people who know the language of newly-introduced alien species of Catharsians are Ratchet and Wildrider. But the crown is taken by First Aid, who has both ASL and Quileute. Yes, the basically extint language of a small tribe warring legally with Stephanie Meyer.
Speaking of languages, both Megatron and Shockwave are noted passable polyglots, and both lack the Universal Translator perk Soundwave, Blaster and Perceptor have. But while Megatron has vague but limited "languages from across Decepticon territory", Shockwave has "all common languages", implying he knows at least a bit of almost everything manually.
Tracks is a triple changer, apparently.
Decepticons' thing is mass-producing sparkless drone clones of their own members.
There's a general threat level system with lists included, where 0 is a random human civilian, 24 is Optimus and Megatron, and 25 is Omega Supreme and Scorponok. Chosen numbers for some characters are thought-provoking. Jazz is 14. Ratchet is 15. First Aid is 9. Wildrider is 6. Ironhide and Starscream are tied with 17. Lord Zarak by himself is 10.
Transformers The Movie sort-of happened, with no apparent notable casualties except for Megatron, who got Galvatroned, but there is a chance that Cyclonus, while a minion of Unicron, predates those events. He is also in an odd position of formally being a part of Decepticons and not the followers of Unicron, who are technically a separate faction.
Scorponok and Deathsaurus are member of Decepticon High Command/Conclave along with Shockwave and Soundwave. Nobody trusts Starscream, so he is not there, but he has the air force.
Mindwipe is, once again, a sorcerer.
Predacons, the combiner team, somehow adopted a sharkticon.
The evil plan du jour of, apparently, pre-Unicron era is converting Earth into the second Cybertron via several colony sites.
#Nighty Talks#Transformers#I have a love-hate relationship with Uprising#Perhaps I should have added more to the list#Eh later#Again I'm happy to answer any questions#Enigma leans more into the combiner side of things#But there's notable Nebulan/Master presence here#Even if it's shorter overall on lore than the previous two books#At least it continued the Devastator saga#Maccadam

Dear Vector Prime, Was Airchanid ever punished considering she was on one of Cybertron's moons? Were any of the surviving aliens given reparations? I feel like imprisonment wouldn't exactly fit her.
Dear Airachnid Asker,
Early into the rebuilding efforts, numerous Mini-Cons made efforts to recolonize Cybertron’s twin moons, their ancestral homeland. A reconstruction team headed by Sledge, Wideload and Yardarm landed to begin the long task of restoring Helpful City to functionality—but only a few cycles after landing, they disappeared. Subsequent search and rescue teams also went missing, and before long Cybertronian authorities quarantined the moon until they could determine what was going on—though this maneuver caused no small amount of friction with a number of hardline Mini-Con separatists who wanted nothing more than to return to their home and put the hated “bulks” of Cybertron behind them.
It didn’t take long for them to figure out what had happened—the starving Airachnid, who had long since exhausted her initial food supply, had seized upon the opportunity for fresh prey and baited each new morsel into a careful trap, growing stronger with each new victim she claimed. Soon, Drift assembled a heavily armed contingent of specialists to deal with the infestation. Pitted against these pest control specialists, Airachnid could hardly put up a fair fight, and the mutant Arachnicon soon found herself impaled upon the business end of Drift’s sword.
As for the second part of your question—unfortunately, the Autobots and Decepticons rarely deigned to notice the many organic species they shared their arm of the galaxy with, and the alien races that Airachnid had wiped out could hardly advocate for themselves. If only there could’ve been some kind of reconciliation effort—unfortunately, in the years that followed, the Cybertronian race evolved and regressed in equal measure, growing increasingly insular, and eschewed the affairs of the wider galactic community in favour of their own evolutionary wars.

Transformers: Mosaic #471 - "Evil Dead Transformers"
Originally posted on April 5th, 2010

wada sez: The "joke" of this one is that it's making fun of Don Figueroa's then-newly-revealed art style for IDW's relaunched ongoing series, which drew inspiration from the live-action movies for its skeletal faces—and at the same time, it’s doing a riff on the Evil Dead franchise. Outback loses his hand and has it replaced with a (laser) chainsword, much like Evil Dead protagonist Ash; the use of Outback specifically is maybe a reference to Spotlight: Kup, where his corpse appears missing that same arm. I can't identify a couple of the characters, is that a Rock Lord in the third panel, do you think? Could that blue guy getting bisected be someone like Wideload or Tackle? Much to ponder.
