1. A head canon that you can back up with canon (must provide evidence)

Eridan Ampora is a fuckin disaster of a troll who is more interested in the idea of a being A Great and Powerful Sea Dweller than the reality of being a sea troll. He barely even qualifies, in fact: Fef straight up calls him out for having only spent “a few days maybe” underwater in his whole life. He seems incredibly low on self-knowledge in general, tbh. Honestly, I don’t think he has a solid sense of who he is, so he hangs everything on playing the role he thinks he should have.

2. A head canon that blatantly contradicts canon (but you love it anyway)Okay, so in canon it’s true that Eridan is incredibly caste-ist and uses blood-based insults all the time. And yet, I love 110% of fanfics where he finds out that Karkat is a mutant and gets over it. I don’t think it’s entirely impossible, given how much Eridan already hilariously contradicts himself. The best implementation I’ve ever seen of this included the explanation that “if [my friend] has to be off the spectrum, you might as well be off the spectrum in the correct direction” so congratulations, Karkat is now a sea dweller. (Karkat for the record was like “THAT DOESN’T EVEN MAKE SENSE, BUT IT’S ON PAR FOR YOU.”)

3. The popular head canon that you disagree with (and why)Okay so I know we all love ‘hipster Eridan’ (and Karkat even calls him a SCARFNECKED DOUCHEBAG HIPSTER) but tbh I don’t read his sense of fashion as hipster at all. Given his overt interest in FLARPing and his overt(ly suppressed) interest in magic, I think he’s actually that guy who wears his Star Trek uniform to school yet tries to play it off that he always dresses like this. He’s just nerdy enough to wear costumes everywhere, but too insecure to OWN it.

4. Take a popular head canon and invert it Eridan Ampora, the rich, fashionable hipster in high school AUs?  How about Eridan Ampora the nerdlord disaster who is constantly correcting the history teacher on minute points to show that he Knows Everything. He has also simultaneously decided that everyone else is trash for not being as good as him, but that he will hit on anyone who remotely pays attention to him. In other words: he is a complete outcast with only one or two friends who sort of tolerates him.

5. A controversial head canon that you have never sharedHaha you gave me this head canon actually, but for the benefit of the rest of the world: Eridan “March” Ampora is not transfemale. Eridan is transhemo. Seriously. Cause on Alternia, gender is a not a marked thing the way it is for us humans -- it’s your position in the blood caste where people draw strict lines. (And tbh, it doesn’t entirely make sense. How do they actually tell who is ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ when it comes to like...shades of blue. Srsly. Equius is higher than Vriska but yet lower saturation, then Gamzee is lower than Eridan yet GZ is the lowly saturated one, and anyway Eridan and Fef both have more red in them than Gamzee??  And the lowest lowbloods are true reds?) 

ANYWAY. Eridan doesn’t go in the water, he lives on land, and most of his friends outside of Fef were all lowbloods. He felt comfortable talking about relationships and feelings with Karkat, who types in completely hemoanonymous grey. Eridan also vehemently avoids any attempts to point out these things. What if Eridan’s toxic, obsessive insistence on being seen as a Sea Dweller is that he doesn’t feel secure in his caste -- he doubles down because he’s freaked out by certain Weird Feelings he has sometimes. Maybe Eridan thinks about wearing a slightly darker shade purple sometimes. Like, he would still be Important if he had been hatched an indigo, right?  It’s not weird that he’s thought about it. Everyone has had Weird Thoughts before. (No one must ever find out about his.)

Anyway, just imagine Eridan doubling down on his obsession with being a sea dweller, but actually he’d be much happier if he were able to transition to another castesign and live as a land dweller instead. Sadly, he was too focused on being a prick and couldn’t get his shit together.
