the way that some people degrade romance as a genre is soooo frustrating. romance is not inherently superficial—literally no genre is. it’s not basic, or plain, or unimaginative. love and romance are SO FUN !!! i can’t help but see the correlation between our sex-shaming, vulnerability-hiding, misogynistic culture and romance slander. there’s also such a crucial element of feminism to romance that people tend to overlook—men being kind, thoughtful, considerate, devoted, and vulnerable in this genre sets a higher standard for how women should be treated in relationships. it can help people recognize how they like to be loved, and where they are being mistreated in their own lives. there’s no need for authors to ‘transcend’ the romance genre; it stands validly on its own. shoutout to romance lovers !!!! 💌💘💐

Summer Break

The coming of the first summer break at NRC is gonna be a bittersweet time for Emi.

The winter break was unfortunate enough, with most of the school leaving to visit their families.

The summer break is much worse – even the octatrio is making the trip, and everyone’s gonna be gone for much longer.

And somehow I have a feeling Crowley will not have considered her situation too much, either.

Plus, she and Jamil just about started dating, and now they’re about to be apart for the whole summer…

So I’m just thinking of Jamil and Emi, hanging out at Ramshackle or something, and Emi being all

🖤: I was just thinking… if maybe I could join you? 🥺👉👈 Like, staying with your family would probably be too much, and not like I want to be inviting myself to meet the parents already, but maybe you and Kalim can find an air conditioned closet to shove me into for a bit or something?

(The offense Jamil will take to this idea, joking as it is, that he’d treat her this way and also that he/they wouldn’t be able to offer better hospitality to her.)

🖤: Since, you know, me and Grim can’t really stay here for the whole summer. Deuce already offered to let me stay with him, but I can’t possibly impose on him and his mother, and same with Ace. And… it would be nice to get to spend some time with you, you know. Maybe for my birthday, if I’m lucky. Would be nice to spend it with you, if I can.

Of course, as soon as Kalim catches wind of this, he’s all on board. And Jamil’s private self is gonna have an easier time being all “she’s someone from school who doesn’t really have family to go home to so Kalim / we invited her to spend some time with us” rather than “hey this is my brand new girlfriend and she’s gonna come over”.

(Though somehow I have a feeling Najma will sus it out anyway soon enough.

Not like Jamil usually looks at many people with such fondness.)

(Emi’s gonna be all over gossiping about Jamil and everything else with Najma. What a win-win.)

Anyway, I’m sure Jamil will figure out a way to sort it out without feeling all exposed (or inadequate) about it. Time to put all those Asim resources to a use that actually benefits himself, too.

Besides, in the Silk City they’ll actually have the rest of the Asim servants around, so Jamil won’t have to be quite so glued to Kalim’s side as he’s at NRC. So while he’ll probably want to avoid giving any cause for gossip, he’ll also actually have some free time to spend with Emi.

You know, show her around while she’s staying there. On Kalim’s orders and all that, totally.

Besides, Kalim would absolutely be telling Jamil to spend time with Emi (and his family), and at this point Jamil might actually take more of an advantage of that.

With Emi’s birthday being literally the day after Kalim’s, she doesn’t expect much.

Not that she wants a huge extravaganza, either – she’ll absolutely love being noticed and celebrated, but she also doesn’t want to impose and be a bother knows that Kalim’s celebrations will already be taking a lot out of Jamil.

Kalim would probably even offer a shared birthday celebration, which will have Emi panicking to decline the offer.

Like, no way. She wouldn’t have a clue on how to behave herself in the center of all that extravaganza, and besides, it’s not like all those people would be there for her - they’d be there to celebrate Kalim, and she’d just feel very much like an outsider.

And while Emi maybe can’t keep Kalim completely from throwing some kind of a get-together, Jamil will definitely be making sure to privately show his own appreciation to her – Emi may protest and downplay it, claiming she doesn’t want him to trouble himself, but it’s all too obvious just how much she enjoys and appreciates something like this done for her. So, quality time, thoughtful gifts and very good food it is, just for the two of them.

Like, does she really think he'd not celebrate her properly and that he'd miss on the chance to see her happy because of what he's done for her? She'd better think again.

I think Bram and Lovecraft should find a (probably haunted) ship that just drifts out in an anomalous and liminal, to put it frankly, odd, bit of sea, forever a drift, surrounded by nothing but fog, no wind, no rain, no waves, no storms, just quiet. I think they should hole up there and sleep for a couple hundred years. yeah. I think that would be nice.
