The Vance County Sheriff’s Office initially told Magee’s mother and stepfather that Magee died by suicide, Matthews said.

“How can you say that it was a suicide? We have not even had autopsy report. We haven’t had a full investigation,” Matthews said. “Now that all of this is out and we’re amplifying the issue, now, all of a sudden, the sheriff has put out a statement and isn’t saying that it is a suicide. Now he’s saying if anyone knows anything to reach out to Crime Stoppers hotline. We’re not going to play this game, sir.”

She added that Magee didn’t have a history of mental illness or criminal activity. “So what would make this man hang himself?” Matthews said rhetorically. “And how he was hung, it was no way that he could have done that himself.”

2025 Annie Allen Youth Poetry Contest

In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Gwendolyn Brooks's landmark book Annie Allen, Brooks Permissions and Crescendo Literary are hosting a golden shovel competition for students in grades 9-12, focused on the poem “Beverly Hills, Chicago.”

A golden shovel is a type of poem that borrows lines from an existing poem to make a new, original poem.

Eligibility: High school students in the Chicagoland area. Two categories: 9th/10th grade; 11th/12th grade. The submitted poem must follow the form of a golden shovel and must be based on "Beverly Hills Chicago." See below for more information.

Deadline and Submission: Poems should be submitted via this form by 5 PM Central Time on Sunday, May 18.

Prizes: $200 and a signed book bundle for the winning student in each category. Publication of the winning poems (and an honorable mention in each category, if applicable) in The Triibe or South Side Weekly (CL will manage publication partnership). Certificate honoring the winner, with letter of recognition from Nora Brooks Blakely.
