Something that really got to me about the Salt Lake Crew scenes so far is that they don't feel like friends. Yeah sure, they have some issues, mainly the Love Triangle Trio, but they are longtime friends. They are Loyal to each other above all else rn. They were in this decision to come after Joel together, even if Abby was the main motivator. Abby didn't convince them to help out of hierarchy or fear of her, but because they wanted to. Because they cared about her and what they all lost. She doesn't order them around as if they're subservient.

Without something similar to Owen and Abby's playful-then-difficult conversation, we don't get a feel for them as people. All the righteous justifications in the world mean nothing for swaying an audience if it's isolated; just words from a strange and hateful mouth.

XIVWrite 7: Morsel

It used to be Rohesia could count on one dream to be her nightmare. The one where she drowned - that fear had supplanted all of her childhood terrors, and a few more besides. 

It’s not that the terror of the water has lessened. At times just walking the piers of Limsa Lominsa is enough to make her break out in a cold sweat. That fear she’s quite sure will never leave her. 

But there are other fears, now - not worse, perhaps, but more immediate, more gnawing. Ones that she cannot so easily dodge by avoiding boats and beaches - cannot so easily turn her mind from. 

Tonight in this dream - she knows in some way that she is dreaming, even though she can’t seem to escape it - it’s those other fears, nipping at her heels. 

At one point she was running the streets of her childhood home, winding the narrow corridors of sun-red stone and trying, desperately, to get away. Now it’s all dark, and she’s lost her way. Or maybe the way is gone now, the way it sometimes is in dreams. 

She can do nothing for that - not here and now, when everything in her still screams for her to run. Whatever it takes, only so she might get away. 

The shifting sound of her pursuer makes her shudder. She shoves herself back against a wall, and though she can’t feel her hands, can’t feel her breath panting, somehow in this dream, she knows this is the most panic she’s ever felt. 

Even so - she curls a hand into a fist, waiting for it to draw closer. There’s nowhere left for her to run. All that’s left for her to do is to strike out. 

The hissing voice of this nightmare thing drags over her like sandpaper. “Thorneyessss… it’s too late for them. Come here… let me devour you, too.” 

Rohesia clenches her jaw so tightly it must nearly crack. 

“Deliciousss, their aether… won’t you give yours to me, too?” 

Closer and closer the hissing, shifting form comes. Rohesia tightens her fist, and makes ready to turn the corner - 

And finally, finally, jolts awake. 

“Fuckin’ - voidsent,” she mutters, thrashing her way out of bed, in search of a light. She can’t stand the dark, not tonight. Not when, if she closes her eyes again, she’ll see the voidsent, wearing the corpses of her friends.

it's been a good few days since we made our (re)acquaintance with our good professor dr. van helsing, which means im going to do what i promised to do literal months ago and present my historical faceclaim: dutch reformed church minister (dominee) cornelis eliza van koetsveld (1807-1893):

one of the most well-known ministers of his era, he started out as a simple village preacher and ended up as court minister - he even baptised queen wilhelmina of the netherlands (1880-1962). he was also, like many dutch reformed ministers in the 19th century, a fairly popular author. it was relatively common for dutch ministers to write fictionalised accounts of their experiences, especially in the countryside, about the people and their habits, the day-to-day occurences, their own efforts to teach and guide their flock correctly and the difficulties they encountered. such accounts usually included some kind of social commentary (van koetsveld's later work was inspired by dickens) and moral lessons for the readers as well. van koetsveld's most popular book can be found here, though it is of course in dutch.

so why van koetsveld? going off his looks alone, when i saw his picture for the first time, i was struck by how in almost every single one of his portraits, he looks kind and caring and yet - there is something mischievous about him, like he's in on some joke or a little piece of knowledge that you, the onlooker, have not yet been made aware of. he looks like a knowledgeable elderly man who also knows how to have little fun - which, to me? is van helsing to a t. and it's not just in his face: his written work exudes the authoritativeness of the 19th century preacher but is full of witty comments and sharp wisecracks that still make me chuckle when i read them.

there is also something else that endears him to me, and that makes me think he's a good fit for van helsing: van koetsveld founded the first dutch school for special education of what we now know to be neurodivergent children, the 'hague idiot school' (1855-1920). the name of his institute doesn't translate particularly well to modern times, but it is important to view this in context: the children who attended this school were generally thought to be feeble-minded and therefore incapable of development, but van koetsveld disagreed with that sentiment. now i don't think van koetsveld would've believed vampires to be anything else but a baseless countryside myth, but his views on neurodivergent children show a certain open-mindedness, to think differently from other people, that is a core trait of van helsing too. (somewhat in that vein, for anyone interested, when the time comes, ill make a post on his conduct towards renfield)

tl;dr, when looking at his pictures i can easily imagine him doing any of the things we see van helsing do in the books: teasing seward, maintaining his gentle but firm bedside manner around his patients, getting up to the various nighttime shenanigans from the next few weeks, and van koetsveld's real-life temperament, as far as can be established, seems to collide quite well with the character of van helsing.

so, can we all agree to please keep discourse-bait posts outside the main tag?

this is like. the #1 reason i don't go into the main tag. it's exhausting. i rely almost entirely on mdzsartreblogs and my friends reblogs to find new posts, because the main tag is filled with #hot takes and discourse bait and people trying to start shit on purpose, which is silly cause most of the time you'll be posting that for your followers who already agree with you anyway

so, for the sake of welcoming new people, can we keep the main tag clear, please? if you do, use a different tag (you've must all have seen by now how i only ever tag my posts as #modao) i hate blocking people on tumblr, but because there's no mute button, it's the only option, but that also means i miss any other non-discourse bait post they might make

so like, let's keep it chill, let's keep it respectful. post whatever you wish on your blog, but if you're tagging it as #mdzs (or any main fandom tag), then please first wonder if it's a post you genuinely think would add value to it and help boost the artists and writers trying to look for audiences, or are you just looking for people to anger and causing people to not want to go into the tag anymore
