Karasuno's Spear and Shield
Rewatching the Shiratorizawa & Karasuno match manga, I just can’t help noticing how Tsuki and Tadashi are always following each other’s footsteps. The moment Tsuki discovers his love for volleyball, Tadashi starts to show off his value on the court.
Tumblr media
Tsuki and Tadashi are so similar because they are not always in the spotlight like other Ace players in the team. Tsuki pushes himself to be rational by putting himself in a worrying loop. Tadashi only has a brief chance on court and even if he makes a small mistake, others may be disappointed in him. For them the path to success has more struggles and misunderstandings than other members. They show how ordinary people can push their boundaries and still have a dream.
Tumblr media
They can see themselves in each other. Tsuki always feels unsatisfied with his performance because he needs to see the result and thinks the process is meaningless without the result. Tadashi knows that Tsuki will be harsh on himself so he tells Tsuki not to question his own capacities. Tsuki just needs Tadashi to remind him that receiving an average result is not “lame”. They are already moving forward.
Tumblr media
They are already able to fight back-to-back in the Dumpster Battle. This time Tadashi is the first one to notice that Tadashi’s work starts to pay off. Their role changes and even though Tsuki is less expressive, he wants to support Tadashi in his way.
Tadashi is the spear that shocks the opponent team and Tsuki is the shield that defends the bottom line for the team. The choice of position is interesting because Tadashi looks a bit timid, while he actually got the grit to find the way out, and Tsuki looks emotionally unstable but actually is determined enough to shield Tadashi’s back.
Tumblr media
I like that their relationship is equal and no one takes a dominant stance. Little Tsuki helped little Tadashi at first, but they were both vulnerable at that time. They have moved forward a lot after having each other. You can fearlessly become yourself when there is someone who always supports you.
