A deep ache had settled into his bones, every muscle stiff and sore as he lay in the hospital bed, the sheets tucked too tightly around him. His eyelids felt heavy, barely open, and his vision blurred under the harsh glare of the fluorescent lights above. He’d been drifting in and out of consciousness for what felt like hours, but now his mind refused to let him slip back into sleep. Everything hurt.

Where am I? He shifted under the covers, his vision slowly adjusting. The steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor filled the room, its sound grating on his nerves. He turned his head to glare at the screen—it was too loud.

No, what was loud was the ringing in his ears—the deafening blast of—

A sharp gasp tore from his throat as his entire body tensed. Instinctively, he tried to sit up but was met with a surge of pain, forcing a pained hiss from his lips. His trembling body collapsed back onto the mattress, every nerve screaming.

The Nasty Burger. His parents. Jazz. Sam. Tucker. Mr. Lancer, too?

“Hey! Help! Hello!?” Danny’s voice cracked with desperation as the heart monitor beside him spiked, its alarm shrill and piercing, calling the nurses to his side.

Favorite themes to write? found family, i say, clawing my face as they lock me away - like you'll have to pry that from my cold dead hands i LOVE writing familial relationships. angst, hurt / comfort / drama - anything with INTENSE feelings ( it might just be me or an ADHD thing or none of the above, but i tend to fade away from more chill threads / day to day kind of things after a bit ). also fun AUs ! a lot of healing from trauma, fighting back against something oppressive, anything that lets you dig into the emotions. and hopepunk, 24/7 ! get that nihilistic grimdark shit away from me.

That explains a few things but if it is something so important... how did Coco not recognise it earlier?

Also, randomly placed new break cards ???

Seriously, this show makes it very hard not to root for these two. Komachi is the only one relatively close to being on his wavelength and that's saying something because Coco is right there.

Although, mostly a Nuts ep, it seemed like a bit of back pedalling as they expanded on his story from before. The guy is carrying so much guilt and won't unburden on anyone, that's going to take its toll.

Also, Baron actually did something this week, darn is he ruthless with his words but well written with his subtle exploitive, ruthless, double meaning way of speaking.

From the preview, I was going to call another parallel but in the end, the two were distinctively different and tackled different things, so I'll let this one slide.

I've met a few people like that over the years, it's so frustrating when they don't listen and burn out. It is a sad state of affairs, especially when you know you have people around to fall back on, not everyone is as lucky.

XD An actual team effort, they even got Coco and Nuts involved, you don't get to see that everyday.

And we are graced with another rare occurrence of Rin and Nozomi being actual best friends. (Over this weird, mother daughter like thing they have going most the other time)

And what exactly are you going to do about it? Get in the way? Be a target, in an attempt to show support or just generally diddly squat to contribute.

The side view is a bit better but how does A become B on this one... Ignoring the fact that I'm still surprised he made it this long. On the other hand, that was a pathetic final showdown with the guy. I'm not even sure why he's even in the show to start with. (Striking at them during the marathon when they'll be already exhausted was a smart play though)

Bunbee with that potential face turn down the line?

o.O Nuts built a giant hamster wheel and put it in the fridge...kinda feel for Coco over that last bit, why would you put it in the fridge!? (Although does it not seem a little ironic to have this ep, follow an ep where Coco and Nuts were helping to train for a marathon by running with them? While acusing Coco of being inactive.)

Jumps forwards, lands backwards... magical girl logic?

It's still just a giant hamster wheel (which everyone seems too polite to say?) at least they had the decency to take it out the fridge -.-

It's a good solution, a healthier but similar item instead... however this whole ep feels like a subtle drugs are bad message, under the cover of eating healthy and being more active. Coco acted like he need a fix all ep and was in rehab... heck even the end, despite the healthier alternative has them worrying of relapse.

Whoops last week kind of sucked.  But I’m still writing every day!  So I’m still making progress!

And on the plus side, one thing I did finish a lot of last week was edits!  I’ve edited all the way up to Chapter 8, which means I’m very nearly done with The Bad Chapters, and everything after 10 or so should be pretty easy.  It’s honestly kind of astounding how quick these edits are going.  Back in the old thread, it used to take months.  But now it’s just really easy to see all the sentences that need rearranging or the filtering that can be removed or the pointless verbosity that can be pared down. (God, Chapter 8 had a truly ludicrous amount of filtering.  It’s like I started doing it just for that chapter, was told “hey maybe don’t” and then immediately stopped for all subsequent chapters.  It’s silly.)

Really, the hardest thing I’ve run into so far is rewriting the Firestorm vs Ninetales fight in Chapter 7.  That one took most of an afternoon because the majority of the prose was lifted from Revision 10.

Dr. Brennan furrowed his brows, maintaining the calm, professional demeanor expected of him as a physician. He waited for Vlad to finish before responding.

"Mr. Masters, I understand that you have some expertise in the paranormal. Living in Amity Park, I've had my own encounters—just the other day, a ghost calling itself the Box Ghost startled me outside my house. I dropped my keys," he added with a dry chuckle, before returning to the matter at hand. "That being said, I don't dismiss the possibility that something beyond the ordinary might be involved here, something a medical team wouldn't necessarily catch."

He paused briefly, choosing his words carefully. "If I didn’t believe you knew what you were talking about, I’d be less inclined to let you conduct your own investigation. But given your... particular background, I won't stand in your way. I’ll keep any mention of this to a minimum around Daniel for now, but... I have a feeling you may not uncover anything beyond what we’ve already found. Still, you're free to look into it if you wish."

Vlad had a great deal of practice with condescending looks and he employed his best one now. "I don't expect you to understand this, but ghosts could have very well had a hand in this. They could very well confuse one teenager and leave fake bodies in place. You may leave this to your own eyes, but I have been in this field for too long to make such a foolish leap."

Of course if he was wrong...

No, he wasn't wrong.

His intuition was not to be ignored and it told him that they were alive and he wasn't going to tolerate this foolish talk of them being dead when he still had to verify it.

"Now I would greatly appreciate it if you could hold off on telling my interim charge that everyone he cares for is dead until I can confirm whether or not they are dead, seeing as you are supposedly interested in minimizing trauma." Maddie would thank him for reading this doctor the riot act later.

Dr. Brennan spoke in a low, measured tone, just loud enough for Vlad to hear without catching Danny's attention. "Their bodies were identifiable through photographs and driver’s licenses—Jack and Maddie Fenton, Jasmine Fenton, and the boy’s teacher. We took every care not to add further distress for Daniel, given his current state and the situation with you as his soon-to-be guardian."

He paused briefly, his expression solemn. "As for Samantha Manson and Tucker Foley, they were identified by their student ID cards. Daniel had one on him when we found him—before we changed him into a hospital gown."

Dr. Brennan hesitated for a moment before continuing, "Samantha Manson, in particular, has distinctive features. Her status as an heiress to the Mansons made it easier to confirm." He glanced down at his clipboard, exhaling softly. "I do have photographs of the scene if you'd prefer to see for yourself."

Flipping through the file, he pulled out a small stack of photographs, keeping them face down as he handed them to Vlad. If Vlad chose to look, he would find undeniable evidence of the remains recovered at the scene, along with images of a severely injured but still-alive Danny, moments before he was pulled from the rubble.

Dr. Brennan's voice remained steady, though there was a certain gravity to his words. "It’ll take a few days to get the DNA results back from the lab, but I believe we both can trust our own eyes. The bodies match the descriptions, and Daniel himself can attest to who was there. The number of victims we recovered lines up exactly with the people Daniel said were present."

Vlad gave the man a dry look. He already had a dislike of doctors. All doctors. This one was no different. Nevertheless, he obviously wasn't getting anything else out of Danny, so he followed him.

To his credit, he did wait until the doctor stopped to continue his line of thought. "I don't know what kind of evidence you think was found, but I would be very interested to know what you think is so irrefutable that you have the right to tell a boy that his parents are dead. DNA? perhaps? These things take time, the tests take time. You can't possibly know it's them." Vlad said resolutely.

Dr. Brennan's attention immediately shifted to the boy, his wide-eyed stare full of confusion and fear. The concern was written all over his face. The doctor let out a quiet sigh, carefully considering how to handle such a delicate situation. He'd seen denial before—it was a natural response—but this level of resistance would make it harder to guide both of them toward acceptance.

"Mr. Masters, I understand this is difficult to process, especially without concrete proof in front of you. But I assure you, the first responders and medical team on the scene conducted a thorough search of the restaurant's debris... and they found evidence." He stopped himself from saying more, his gaze softening as it fell on Danny’s distressed expression.

"...I think we should continue this conversation outside." He turned back to Danny. "Daniel, we'll be right back, alright?"

Danny swallowed hard, nodding shakily, his throat tight with emotion.

Without waiting for a reply from Vlad, Dr. Brennan made his way to the door, holding it open and waiting for him to follow.

Vlad listened to both Danny's and the doctor's information in turn. So this whole mess was in fact due to the explosion he had seen on the news. The seven people mentioned, six plus Daniel himself were all accounted for, and yet it made little sense.

What were such an odd group of people doing at a fast food restaurant at this time of night? Why his teacher? Surely a parent teacher conference would take place at the school, and even if they had decided to meet up at a public restaurant, why were his little friends with him? And Jasmine? It didn't make sense.

As for Daniel being the only survivor. Vlad barely held back a scoff, just barely. "I'm sorry, but you say first responders recovered them from the scene? I saw that scene on television, I can hardly believe you would know anything at this point. I'd like to confirm things myself before you further upset poor Daniel who has already been through quite enough today."

Truth be told, he didn't care quite so much about upsetting Danny, in fact he had been trying to provoke him a few moments ago. But concern for children did shut most people up, and he didn't like what this doctor was saying.

"In fact, even if you had found proof, I would like to do my own research, the Fentons are," Vlad emphasized the word, implying that they very much were still alive, "ghost hunters. Ghosts are tricky beings. Leaving a construct body in the place of an accident while spiriting away a real person is not out of the realm of possibility, and I would much rather ensure my dear friends are not being held captive."

It was a bold assertion, but it made much more sense to Vlad than the alternative.

After the nurses ensured Danny had calmed down and his vitals were stable, they offered sympathetic smiles and quietly left the room. Danny, still trembling slightly, reached for the glass of water they'd left, gulping it down to soothe his dry throat. The cool liquid briefly alleviated the rough patches inside, but his mind remained foggy, his fragmented memories swirling as he struggled to make sense of it all.

A knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts, and his baby-blue eyes flicked over to the sound. The glass clinked lightly on the tray just as the sharp, measured steps echoed into the room. Danny’s heart skipped a beat when he saw who it was.

Vlad Masters.

His eyes widened, a silent gasp caught in his chest. He could barely breathe as their gazes locked.

“Hello, Daniel.” Vlad’s smooth voice cut through the tense air, sending a jolt through Danny.

His chest tightened, hands sliding under the sheets to clench into fists. What was he doing here? Why now? The doctor hadn’t yet come in, and a sliver of hope still flickered within Danny. But that hope was slipping as he saw Vlad standing before him, looking down with that calm, unreadable expression.

“Why are you here?” Danny hissed through clenched teeth, trying to keep the tremor from his voice. Was Vlad here to gloat? To rub salt in the wound? Or worse—what if he was here to deliver news the doctor couldn’t?

No. That couldn’t be it.

They’re fine. They’re all fine. We’re okay.

Danny’s eyes remained locked on Vlad, distrust and nervous energy swirling in his gaze, as if waiting for the truth to break through.

The Fentons were dead.

Vlad was told this and could not process it.

He nodded along like he understood, like he was absorbing all this, but at a fundamental level, he couldn't.

The Fentons were dead.

Well, almost all dead.

Daniel was still alive.

Half-Alive.

Of course Danny would live. Hadn't he himself survived things humans never could? His own house exploding had been more of an inconvenience than anything else.

Vlad couldn't resolve the discrepancy between what he was told and what had to be true, so he turned his mind to helping where he could. He could think about the rest later.

"You should go see him, he's awake now, and you're a familiar face. He needs that right now." Some or other hospital staff told him.

Truth be told, he highly doubted it, but he nodded anyways. Better than dwelling on why he was here. If Daniel wanted to jump out of the bed and beat him with a hospital side table, well maybe it would make things seem more real.

He was lead to the room in question and knocked on the door frame before coming in.

"Hello Daniel."
