Chapter Four:

“How’s Tidepaw doing, Shellpaw?” Lichenstar inquired, his green eyes filled with fear. His black tail swiped the sand back and forth on the ground as he waited for Shellpaw’s response.

“He’s alright,” Shellpaw answered with a smile that seemed to relax Lichenstar, “A few nights and he should be up and about again.”

Lichenstar’s stiff shoulders dropped as he stared at Shellpaw’s amber eyes. “No wonder Rootdash wanted you as her apprentice. You’ve done well, I’m glad to have you as our medicine cat.”

“You mean medicine cat apprentice,” Shellpaw almost smirked as he corrected Lichenstar.

“No,” Lichenstar began, a proud yet sad parental look plastered on his face, “I’m glad that we have you as our medicine cat.”

Shellpaw’s mouth slowly opened in shock, “B-but AbyssalClan hasn’t recognized me yet!” His protest seemed to have been louder than he thought, attracting nearby cats to come closer and listen in. “I can’t be considered a full-fledged medicine cat without AbyssalClan’s approval.”

“That’s true,” Lichenstar meowed, “but that doesn’t mean I can’t recognize you as KelpClan’s medicine cat. I’m going to give you your name.”

Shellpaw looked down at his paws, clenching the sand tightly. “Can…you wait until Tidepaw recovers?”

Lichenstar stared at the apprentice, a curious look on his face. He seemed to ponder Shellpaw’s request to delay his naming, “That works with me.”

“Thank you,” Shellpaw responded, voice shaking as his grip loosened from the ground. Shellpaw was still stressed This isn’t right. I can only get my name after AbyssalClan recognizes me. What is Lichenstar thinking? 

Amid his trainwreck of thoughts, a familiar voice called out to him. “Shellpaw! Join us on a patrol!” Claypaw shouted with her typical bright smile.

Hovering above Claypaw was her mentor; Sandslash, with a welcoming gaze just as warm as Claypaw’s was. Nearby was the clan’s deputy, Turtlesplash. He was also the mentor of Redpaw who had been staring daggers at Shellpaw with a sour face.

As he padded over, Turtlesplash spoke out, “You don’t have to come, Shellpaw. I know you have a lot to deal with ever since your mentor went missing.” 

Shellpaw shook his head, returning a smile, “It's fine. Tidepaw’s doing well enough and I need to find some herbs anyway. It’ll be safer going in a group, especially since an otter decided to attack Tidepaw on a patrol.”

“That’s true,” Turtlesplash meowed, flicking his tail at the patrol to get going.

The patrol took a long route, heading to the Dippers first. As they reached the location, Shellpaw gathered oysters that could be eaten and used as containers later. Catching up to the patrol after almost being left behind, they arrived at Kelp Crevices.

The location was often used as a safe ground for hunting, but recently otters like the one that attacked Tidepaw began drifting near. 

As the mentors trained their apprentices, Shellpaw drifted nearby in search of herbs. As he scanned the area, he came across a bedding of sea grass. They were overgrown, and deciding that it was a good time to harvest, his paws began to get to work.

Shellpaw flexed his claws out, cautiously cutting the sea kelp like his mentor had told. The recall of the memory distracted Shellpaw as a turtle shell flung out of the sea grass and at his face, causing him to wince in pain. 

He stared up at the turtle shell that began drifting away as the other cats came to him at the sound of his yowl. 

To his shock, Redpaw had a concerned look that disappeared when he looked at the group.

“Are you alright?” Sandslash asked, Turtlesplash continuing, “We heard you yelp. What happened?”

“I’m alright, a crab was hiding in the seagrass and clawed my paw.” He lied, not wanting the truth of what happened to come to light. “Sorry for the false alarm.”

“That’s what we’re here for, no?” Claypaw inquired, “If something happens to you, we’re here to help!”

Though Shellpaw didn’t show it, he almost felt like crying. His mentor was gone, and he should be helping everyone, no the other way around. He took a breath in before responding.

“Yeah. Yeah, thank you,” He meowed, his voice slightly unsteady.

WE'RE GETTING SO CLOSE TO ACTION POINTS YALL!!!

There's still so much left to build before we can actually do that but have this lovely chapter 4 that I am kinda proud of and kinda not. Feel free to analyze some of the events in this chapter, who know maybe I left a few hints at the next few chapters >:D.

To get past this little mini art block I’m in I decided to design adult versions of the kittens/apprentices from the warriors series where they either died/we never see them as adults. I’m gonna tag anything related to this #starclan warriors.

First up is Turtlekit from Shadowclan, who I have aged up to warrior and named Turtlesplash. She is the kit of Ashcloud and Cinderfur on the family tree and supposedly dies from carrionplace disease in TPB. Her siblings are Rubblekit and Quietkit.

Turtlesplash: A very fun loving and vibrant cat, will often perform potentially dangerous stunts in the pursuit to entertain not only themselves, but their friends as well, 14/10

Frostblood: Often seems cold and calculating and distant, and they will defend their clan to their dying breath, using a combination of strength, smarts and skill to do so. 15/10

Lightningstrike: The fastest cat the clans have ever seen if they do say so themselves. Cocky and arrogant they will never turn down the chance to impress. A very loyal friend who never breaks a promise, 15/10

Rabbithop: Humble and anxious, this cat will often underestimate their own abilities but will always give it their all regardless 13/10

Firechaser: A reckless daredevil who always charges headfirst into battle and will tell the stories of their adventures to many wide eyed kits. They will never do anything that puts others at risk though and will often throw themselves into danger to protect others, 15/10

Hawktalon: A brilliant strategist who always picks their battles carefully. Intelligent, strong and with a strict moral code, this is one cat you will not want to get on the bad side of, 14/10

🌸Doublebounce, ❄️Light Stream, ☀️Hare! maybe a little 🌲/☀️Merry or a ✨Speckle!

🌸 Double's relationship with all of Tideclan interests me tbh. Given that it was her birthclan and she left them after feeling like an outcast and burden for so long...theres a LOT of tension there to play around with. Of course, her relationship with Tenderheart will always have a special place in my heart bc Anon and I had it planned for so long and have finally been able to rp it. There's so much guilt and hatred and desperation mixed in with those two...

Largely Double's relationship with her mother created all the relationships she had with other Tideclan cats as well. She would have never become close to Orca and her adopted kiddos if her own mom had been there more. They would have never had such a poor falling out. And the mentor/apprentice relationship between her and Mako would have been better had he not been so focused on playing the middle man and protecting Tender's feelings.

It's always a lot with Double and I really appreciate how much COTM has allowed me to develop her. She's one of my favorite ocs.

☀ Hare's ideal friend would be someone who he can confide in. Who listens and doesn't judge. And tbh he's already found this in Turtlesplash and Jasperchasm! Clawsplash is another good friend of his but Claw reminds him a lot of one of his siblings so they can get testy with one another sometimes.

☀/🌲Merry...Cousin Merry...I want Razz to be closer to you in rp. They haven't talked much in regards to the twins' mom disappearing or Razz's "adventures" on her own and I wish they would! In terms of shipping...I don't know if I have any specific cats? I havent seen Merry interact with too many his age.

✨Intial thoughts on Specklestone: Mean little baby!!!! She called Ladybug a "pretender" (in her head but still lol). Lady got her chance to teach some manners though. I'd like to talk to Speckle again and see how she's grown since they last talked, considering Lady has been with Creekclan for many moons now and is an official warrior.

Chapter Fifteen

Shellshift’s stomach turned as he stared down at the small sardine below his paws, his emotions tossing and turning. He hated Redpaw. No. He despised her. But was it fair to?

Everyday, during training, she’d get compared to him and Tidecrash, of course she’d be upset. But that- that didn’t give her any right to bully him. It didn’t ever give her the right to put his life in danger. It would NEVER make what she did to him be right.

He would never forgive her for how she tormented him every chance she got. For how she would bully him to pieces. No, he would never forgive her.

He crushed the sardine under his paws, taking a heavy breath to calm himself.

“I can’t think this way,” he murmured, his head twisting.

“Shellshift?” A concerned voice meowed softly at Shellshift’s side, “Are you alright?”

Swiftly, Shellshift flicked to face the young calico, “Sorry, you just don’t look very well right now.”

Shellshift hesitated before speaking up, “It’s alright Waterbite, thanks for checking up on me. I appreciate it.”

“Well you know!” Waterbite grinned, “Anything for a mate!”

As Shellshift fixed his posture, Waterbite cleared his throat and continued, “By the way, Lichenstar dropped the otter caution, ‘parently they drifted away.”

Shellshift nodded, staring at Waterbite in a somewhat suspicious manner as Waterbite licked his paw, “Did you cut your paw again?” Shellshift inquired, with a knowing face.

Startled, Waterbite looked up a look of embarrassment and shock, “How’d you know?”

Shellshift groaned, getting up and padding into the den and right out, “You keep acting like you didn’t get injured, that it makes it more obvious.”

Waterbite returned an awkward chuckle, “Sorry, you know how bad I am at collected urchins! If we don’t get rid of them they’ll uproot the kelp roots!”

“Uproot,” He grumbled, swiftly applying the kelp poultice and wrapping it up in a kelp vine, “At this point, you’ll be purposefully injuring yourself.”

Waterbite rolled his eyes with a playful smirk, “Yeah yeah, it’s not like I’m injuring myself on purpose. It hurts y’know?”

Shellshift sighed, tightening the wrap around Waterbite’s paw, “Alright, that should do,” he meowed, head flicking to Redpaw and Claypaw entering camp, “Don’t put too much pressure and it’ll heal fast.”

“Thanks Shellshift,” Waterbite responded, getting up and turning away, “I’ve got to go, Turtlesplash’s orders to keep Lichenstar informed every moment of his life.”

Shellshift rose, nodding politely to the older warrior, “I should go too, good day Waterbite.”

“See you around!” Waterbite meowed as Shellshift padded away, one thing on his mind.

“Uproot…” he murmured to himself as he padded through the camp. He desperately needed to find Tidecrash.

“Tidecrash!” Shellshift called, catching a glimpse of his fur whizzing past a few cats returning from patrol.

“Shellshift!” Tidecrash returned the call, a hint of joy in his voice as he bounded towards Shellshift, “How are you? Well, I hope?”

“Good, I need to talk to you,” Shellshift meowed, in a more serious tone.

“Are you gonna confess?” Tidecrash teased, playfully shoving Shellshift.

Shellshift stared at Tidecrash and he paused, “Oh you’re serious. Your den?”

“Yeah, meet me there, nightfall,” Shellshift turned around, and watched his clanmates as he padded from Tidecrash.

Tidecrash watched as Shellshift disappeared into the medicine cat den. Under his breath, he murmured so no clanmate could hear, “I want you to tell me you like me…”

Shellshift was curled up, staring at the exit of the den, his eyes waiting for a single movement, a shadow to flash by.

And just like his request was granted, a voice cooed into the den, “You in there?”

“Of course I am you dimbus,” Shellshift meowed his response as Tidecrash padded in a concerned look on his face.

“You alright? You look like you saw a ghost or something, or like Redpaw is haunting you.” Tidecrash inquired, through his joke a concerned face apparent.

“You remember the prophecy, I feel like everything’s coming back to me bit by bit.” Shellshift responded, uncurling as Tidecrash approached his side, “Shellshift, and now uproot. Something about something’s secret being uprooted? I feel like it has to do something with Rootdash’s disappearance. It’s all in bits and pieces though and I'm starting to get scared.”

Tidecrash brushed his pelt against Shellshift and his muzzle nuzzled gently across Shellshift’s, “Calm down there Shell. How about you tell me about what came back?”

Shellshift took a breath, Tidecrash’s scent clouding any other scent around him, “Alright uhm. I was talking to Waterbite when he mentioned something about the kelps getting uprooted when it came back to me. Something’s secret being uprooted. Like a secret of the past coming to light and I-”

A crash sounded just outside the den, and Tidecrash bounced in front of Shellshift, growling.

“Shellpaw!” Darkpelt crashed in frantically, clearly out of breath, “I need help!”

Oakpaw-Huge brown tabby with yellow eyes. Oakpaw is the definition of gentle giant. He does know how to fight, but would rather not resort to violence for issues. Even when he does have to resort to physical confrontation he'd rather use his size and strength to hold down the aggressor then anything else. He's basically like Ferdinand the Bull as a cat. Mentor is Mousetail(the tiny one), parents are Molefoot and Briarwhisker. Will be named Oakleaf in the future. Future mates with Turtlesplash.

Oakpaw - I love him, he’s a good boy. Oakleaf suits him so well, and I love the dynamic of huge apprentice and tiny mentor lol, 15/10

Chapter Nine

“Paw up.” Shellpaw meowed, examining Tidepaw’s movement in his hindpaw.

“How’s it?” Tidepaw inquired, shaking it slightly.

“Doing good,” Shellpaw responded, removing the old kelp wrap and applying a new layer, “You should be good in a few days.”

“Too bad it wasn’t any sooner, I could’ve gone to the training at CoralClan.” Tidepaw purred, lowering his paw, “Would’ve been a nice last gift as an apprentice.”

Placing the old wrapping away, Shellpaw rolled his eyes at Tidepaw, “You wouldn’t have gone anyway! You would’ve been named as soon as you recovered!”

“Well, there’s nothing wrong with wishful thinking,” Tidepaw chuckled, “I think you need to learn that.”

“Hey! I know how to have wishful thinking!” Shellpaw complained, though with a smile on his face.

A throat cleared, attracting the two to look at the front of the den entrance. It was Lichenstar, Cavernleap, and their two kits under them.

“Is something wrong, Lichenstar?” Shellpaw meowed, as the two kits hurled themselves towards him.

“Cavernleap wasn’t feeling well before Oysterkit decided to hide from us, and when Oysterkit went missing, it made him feel even worse,” Lichenstar answered, his tail wrapped affectionately tight around Cavernleap’s.

Shellpaw nodded, his tail flicking to an empty area for Cavernleap to lay on.

“I also wanted to talk to you about Tidepaw and well, other things too.” Lichenstar continued, letting go of Cavernleap’s tail as he padded away.

“Sure,” Shellpaw responded, his voice as lengthy as a manta ray.

Lichenstar’s smile crooked as his tail flicked, beckoning Shellpaw to come outside with him.

“So..is this about Turtlesplash?” Shellpaw quickly inquired, staring at his paws as the two walked farther from the medicine den.

Lichenstar remained quiet as the two finally arrived at a desolate place.

“Partly,” He finally answered with a look of apology, “He can’t face you right now. He feels awful about what happened.”

Shellpaw sighed, “Is there anything else to this?”

“Yes, how is Tidepaw doing?”

“Alright,” Shellpaw shifted into a sitting position, “He should be better in a few days.”

“‘K. How about you?” Lichenstar asked, his green gaze piercing through Shellpaw.

“What…do you mean?” Shellpaw inquired, his tail wrapping around himself from discomfort.

Lichenstar blinked a few times before answering, “I was going to give you a name, and I was wondering if AbyssalClan already has.”

“No. They haven’t.” Shellpaw meowed, pawing the ground nervously.

“Alright then. What do you think about ‘Shellshift’?” Lichenstar meowed, sending a shiver down Shellpaw’s spine. Where had he heard ‘Shellshift’ before?

“Are you alright?” Lichenstar asked, his meow full of concern.

“Yes,” Shellpaw slowly responded, doubting it, “I’m fine. And the name is good. I like it.”

“Cool,” Lichenstar turned away, “Also, since the apprentices are out and Tidepaw can’t really do anything, can you help the elders?”

Shellpaw retracted a bit, “oh uh.”

“Joking.” Lichenstar chuckled, padding away.

Shellpaw stared at his leader in disbelief.

“So, what’d Lichenstar say to you?” Tidepaw asked as Shellpaw tended to Cavernleap’s fever.

“Nothing really,” Shellpaw answered, his tail wrapped around the energetic kittens.

“So we’re keeping secrets now?” Tidepaw teased, his paw patting Clamkit’s head.

As the kit giggled under Tidepaw’s hand, Shellpaw rolled his eyes, “It was about your health.”

Tidepaw patted Shellpaw’s head, “Thank you for telling me,” He giggled lightly.

“Whatever..” Shellpaw’s face reddened, “Just get better soon. We're the only apprentices in camp since the others won’t be back for a few days.”

“We’ll see them at full moon though. It’s soon, right?” Tidepaw inquired, his tail slowly swishing in the water.

“Yep.” Shellpaw answered his attention returning to Cavernleap.

Chapter Eight

A yowl jolted Shellpaw from his slumber. He stirred for a moment in his bedding before jumping up on his paws. That was Lichenstar’s meeting howl.

Swiftly padding out, Shellpaw saw a crowd gathering around Lichenstar, who stared anxiously toward the nursery and at his mate, Cavernleap. 

Lichenstar scanned the crowd with a fearful look on his face, “Oysterkit is missing.”

A murmur arose in the crowd, a mix of annoyance and nervousness splitting within each voice. 

 A voice shouted behind Lichenstar, drawing everyone's attention, “The issue isn’t that Oysterkit is missing. The issue is that she’s missing and the otters have been aggressive!” 

Shellpaw’s face contorted, and memories of Tidepaw’s injured body flashed through Shellpaw’s head.

“We wanted to tell you all since there’s the danger of searching for the kit. Getting into otter territory could seriously hurt you!” Turtlesplash continued, his voice wearing down, “We’re asking for cats to help us but to give you all a warning for now.”

Taking a breath in, Shellpaw padded forward slowly, “Let me help.” 

Turtlesplash gazed at Shellpaw, pausing for a moment and looking up. “Anyone besides Shellpaw.”

“What?” Shellpaw’s front paw stomped forward, his eyes gazing at Turtlesplash.

“You heard me Shellpaw. You aren’t going to look for Oysterkit.” Turtlesplash growled.

“Why!” Shellpaw snapped back.

Turtlesplash’s eyes narrowed at Shellpaw, stepping right in front of him, “We are not losing another medicine cat!” 

Shellpaw felt the sand below him bunch together under his paws. “This is a kit’s life we’re talking about!” Shellpaw retorted his anger festering in his throat.

“Do you think I don’t know that?” Turtlesplash countered, the crowd growing anxious as the two continued to argue, “Even then, we are not putting you at risk Shellpaw.”

“I don’t care if I'm at risk,” Shellpaw responded, his chest heaving.

“For AbyssalClan’s sake, Shellpaw! Why won’t you listen to me!” Turtlesplash shouted, “No wonder Rootdash disappeared!”

“Turtlesplash!” Lichenstar swiftly shouted as Turtlesplash finished.

“Lichenstar!” Turtlesplash howled, turning to face him in the eye. 

Shellpaw felt a weight crash on him as the two stood facing each other. Turtlesplash seemed to be calming down, but Shellpaw sure wasn’t. Rootdash didn’t leave him. It wasn’t his fault.

Having cooled down, Turtlesplash turned to Shellpaw, an apologetic look on his face, “Shellpaw…”

Shellpaw wasn’t taking it anymore, “Don’t say anything,” he meowed turning towards the medicine cat den and beginning to pad away.

As he neared the den, Shellpaw could hear Turtlesplash’s pained voice murmuring to Lichenstar, “Why in AbyssalClan did I say that?” 

“Hey, you alright?” Tidepaw asked as Shellpaw entered, slumping onto the ground. “What happened?”

“Nothing important,” Shellpaw responded, his eyes dulled.

“Okay, well,” Tidepaw began, padding to Shellpaw’s side and prodding his ear, “I’m here if you need to talk.”

“Thanks.” Shellpaw purred, eyes slowly shutting.

“Of course.”

That was a lot of conversation....well. It's out! Chapter 8! This is a lot of building for relevant plot later on, but this chapter also provides a look into the functions of Kelpclan! I hope you guys liked it!
