Let’s Talk HTTYD!

HTTYD was the most amazing live action film I’ve seen in a good bloody while! The power, the aura, the overall atmosphere was insane! It made you emotional, you could feel it was a love letter to the OG! It was faithful to the original, so much love was put into it, so much passion. The energy was there, you felt like you were on Berk.

As a kid, I loved the original, I loved Toothless. I myself had a cat, a tuxedo cat who just happened to be a Norwegian Forest Cat. Susie, my late cat, had eyes identical to his, so bright and vivid. Her tail was broken, crooked and coincidentally was to the side that Toothless’s own tail had broken. She also had a few teeth missing. She was our own night fury! The Toothless in the live action made me think of my cat, as a cat person who has the biggest soft spot for tuxedos and black cats I was in absolute love seeing how faithful to the OG they were with Toothless. I was so impressed and in shock.

Keeping Toothless as feline as possible was a true love letter to those of us who have or had cats that we could see him in, we could see a piece of our furry companions on the big screen in the form of a beloved childhood dragon we all know and love.

Keeping Gerard Butler as Stoic the Vast was the beyond amazing, no one could be Stoic but him, he was made for Stoic. You could genuinely tell that Gerard was having fun as Stoic, he was in his element and was more than excited to physically take on that role, 90 lbs suit and all! Mason was made to be Hiccup, I can’t imagine any other young man for the role. Mason brought Hiccup to life in the best way possible, he played him so spectacularly well that I couldn’t imagine any other for the role. He checked all the boxes, all we needed was a bit more of… that! Yes, I gestured to all of him! He had the sass, he had the charm, and my gods did he have the Hiccup flare!

Nico Parker was PERFECT for Astrid! She was made for that role! I know in the beginning people had their doubts about her as Astrid but let me say that she was the best person for the job. No one else could have brought her to life like Nico. Nico’s energy and aura was what made you the viewer truly believe she was Astrid from the original, her power was present, her energy matched phenomenally, she did the original justice. My family, who are usually very critical about changes to films, all agree that Nico was Astrid through and through. That is OUR Astrid.

The music.. the bagpipes! BLOODY HELL THAT WAS A MASTERPIECE!! 100/10!!! Bagpipes are a powerful instrument, I grew up with them in music around me. I had been to parades with them many times and had heard them at church during special occasions, most memorable was the anniversary of the OKC bombing. Bagpipes make you feel things, they have this way of inflicting intense emotions in you the listener. Whether it be for happiness or sadness that is up to the listener to determine.

In HTTYD, bagpipes are a common instrument throughout the soundtrack. You can really hear them best during the intro, the arena, the new tail scene, the test flight, and especially in the battle against the Red Death. I hear people use the argument that they don’t fit as Vikings were Norse, yes, BUT need I remind you that they did in fact inhabit the British Isles and even as far as Canada, there’s debate over how far inland they went into North America but for what is known now I can confirm Canada was a settlement site. Naturally there were cases of where they would mix with the local populations in places like the isles and thus cultures mixed. Bagpipes DO make sense! Coincidentally, bagpipes would have existed in the time of the Vikings! Bagpipes date back to 1000 AD and the Vikings do as well, they may have had instances with them being used by the Vikings themselves! Vikings were around approximately from 800 AD - 1050 AD, so there’s your history lesson. It is speculated they did go longer until almost 1100 AD but that is up for debate.

The opening shot of Berk was truly insanely well executed, the music for This is Berk was spot on to the OG but with some beautiful tweaks to it. Enhancing the use of bagpipes as well as other woodwinds and brass instruments, the percussions were on point and hit you hard. You could FEEL the energy. The opening was spot on to the original and was captured flawlessly. My mum was shocked, she could not get over it. “It was like I was on Berk, it was stunningly accurate to the original!” - my mum

For those who were unaware, I was in orchestra back in community college for my AA Degree, my first song on the piano was Forbidden Friendship, hearing the new version made me emotional, that, that was so beautifully enhanced I cried! The score itself was incredible, it was beautifully executed and could not ask for a better remake of the beloved scene and music. Test Drive hits you hard, when I tell you the theater cheered so loud I mean it, everyone went nuts for Test Drive and I could hear tears of joy. This, this is how it’s done! Hitting the audience with a banger like Test Drive and recreating one of the most iconic scenes in animation ever by using the man, the myth, the legendary John Powell for the score that brings all us back to how we were as kiddos wanting desperately to ride a dragon with an epic score playing as we flew through the skies over Berk.

The new version for New Tail (Carefully Attaching) was so beautifully done, I know people were a bit disappointed about not having the woodwind buildup to the takeoff but that, to me, was okay, they added this beautiful little adjustment where it’s this more almost thumping effect that to me feels like it’s matching the heartbeat of Hiccup as he’s attaching the new tail. The thumps, while very folk music like, fit to match a heartbeat of sorts. It worked! Then bam! The takeoff! Toothless takes flight and tosses Hiccup into the lake! Mason’s cheering was so adorably hilarious the theater was cracking up.

The battle at the end was insane, the music was more powerful than the 2010 version! That’s saying something as that one back in 2010 hit harder than any bullet train could when running into you. You could feel so much of its overpowering intensity, it was insane! You could tell the audience was in awe. They were for it every step of the way!

I could probably ramble on about the music alone! Ah- well- that’s what happens when you are a music nerd and former orchestra student I suppose!

I can say that this movie, regardless of what some may believe, is 100% worth watching. It is so powerful and beautiful that it will make you feel emotional, you will feel like this is the biggest love letter to you as a fan. We grew up with HTTYD, many of us are adults now, we were kids back then, we grew up with Hiccup and Toothless, this is our movie to enjoy and feel nostalgic about over and over again.

I love Disney and all but this, this kicks them in the metaphorical balls so bloody hard in the live action department as of recently that they should probably study up on it. No hate of course, I just feel like some of what we had lately from them has been quite lacking. Not HTTYD, gods no. That, that hit every point needed and necessary.

Go see HTTYD!! I’m telling you it’s amazing!! I’m probably going to see it again because why the hell not?!

It’s safe to say that you can give Russy the MVP trophy.

Last night, history was made at the Amway Center in Orlando as one MVP candidate had the game of his life in such MVP caliber display. Russell Westbrook sparked a amazing OKC Thunder come-from-behind victory over the Orlando Magic which helped clinched a playoff berth. The Thunder defeated the Magic 114-106 as Westbrook set a NBA record for most points scored in a triple double performance. The NBA All Star dropped a whopping 57 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists as he was able to complete his 38th triple-double of the year.

With just 8 games left in the regular season, Westbrook is just 3 triple doubles shy of tying Hall Of Famer Oscar Robertson‘s all-time record for the most in a single season. In addition, Russell joins the elite list such as fellow MVP candidate James Harden, LA Lakers legends Wilt Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor as the only players in league history with multiple 50 point triple doubles.

As close as this year’s MVP race is, expect a photo finish in the end as Westbrook and Harden are planning to light up the scoreboard night in and night out. But if Westbrook continues his triple double streak to finish the season off in a begin, let’s just say Jordan needs to plan a custom-made Jumpman tuxedo for Russell to accept the NBA MVP award on June. 26 in New York.
