more of my yapping about the fandom-given hetalia Ukraine name

I don't like the Katyusha Ukraine because in my opinion it doesn't suit her, and people constantly use the name incorrectly. basically, Katyusha is like a playful version of "Kateryna/Katya", but people write it like a formal first name pretty often (Katyusha Chernenko), no blame since it comes from a place of unfamiliarity with slavic languages, it's just a bit annoying. plus the word is associated with that one russian song that became popular during World War II god it just doesn't suit her at all in my opinion 😭

"Katyusha" is a diminutive form of the name Kateryna, except it's of russian origin; in Ukrainian the diminutive forms of the name are "Katrusya", "Katerynka", or less commonly "Katrunya"

historically, the russian empire and later the soviet union promoted russian at the expense of Ukrainian, leading to the suppression of Ukrainian culture and language. of course, some Ukrainians use Katyush/Katyusha as playful nicknames, because the blending of Ukrainian and russian, that's been caused by reoccurring russification, migration, and political influence, lead to mixed usage in everyday speech – it's a normal thing (surzhyk). it's not a crime to use this word or anything, I just find it ironic that the character that represents a nation constantly oppressed by russian imperialism, in hetalia only exists as a dependant and less important character to give russia more endearing relationships and make him more interesting, and then the Japanese fandom coincidentally has also chosen the russian word for her name (I assume it's after that popular soviet song)

really I feel there's not much Ukrainian about canon hetalia Ukraine, which seems to be a very common feeling among many of my Ukrainian friends who know about the character :/ they think she's cute and pretty, but when it comes to national identity and culture, she is not relatable even on a stereotypical level, and has little depth as a character

anyway, if you want some Ukrainian first names, here's a list of the ones I think sound fitting (SUBJECTIVE OPINION 😡)

Myroslava (love this one) - slavic origin, a combination of мир and слава, meaning peace and glory. it suits resilient and strong people

Olha/Olya (ОЛЯ UA!!!!!!!) - scandinavian origin (ukr. variant of Hélga). yea it's a really old and really common name that associates with the Kyivan Rus era, anyway I use it because of a meme and due to every Olya I've met building this collective Olya in my head that's literally how I also see Ukraine. she's such an Olya. it's hard to explain

Olena (not Olyena) - greek origin (ukr. variant of Helénē) came to Ukrainian through Church Slavic "Yelena" (not Yelyena)

Lesya - Ukrainian name deriving from "Olesya" which in turn derives from "Oleksandra". I'm very biased about it because it's one of my favourite female names, and also many Ukrainians associate it with Lesya Ukrayinka, which is the self-given title of an outstanding Ukrainian writer, translator and cultural figure

Halyna - likely greek origin and comes from "galēnē". I like it because I get to call her Halynka/Halya, I think it sounds cute

Tetyana - common slavic name, likely of roman origin, it just has a tender and pretty sound to it

these names are common in some or all other slavic languages, differing in varied phonetics

😑 I am NOT gatekeeping people from calling her "Kateryna", I just personally dislike Katyusha or russian Yekatyerina for her, and in my opinion the old russian-speaking fandom did a better job naming her Olha, even if that popularized the russian transcription for this same name (Olga)

Did you know that there's a little bit of Catalan culture in Ukraine? They are the Kyiv giants, created after the Catalan tradition of giants. In Catalan culture, each town or city has a couple of giant-sized figures that are taken out to dance during Catalan traditional holidays such as festa major (local patron saint day) and Corpus together with other traditional Catalan street dances. Very often, these giants represent the mythical founders of the town, characters of important local legends or history.

Barcelona (Catalonia's capital city) celebrates its main festa major for La Mercè. Since 2006, every year Barcelona invites a guest city to be present in the cultural activities of this holiday and take part in cultural exchange. In 2023, this city was Kyiv (Ukraine). Kyiv decided, not only to send Ukrainian dancers, but also to join in the festa major with their own couple of giants: Olga and Volodymyr. After the end of La Mercè, they have been taken to Kyiv.

I have not been able to find out if the giants still exist or it they have perished in Russia's attacks.

Happy Independence Day, Ukraine! 🇺🇦

On 24 August 1991 Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union.

In mid August of that year a hardline faction of the Communist Party of the USSR tried to overthrow reformist President Mikhail S. Gorbachev. The attempted coup failed after a couple of days because of mass demonstrations in Moscow and because some of the coup plotters were too drunk to think clearly.

But Ukrainians had seen enough and decided that they were not going back to the bad old days of Stalinism. So parliament in Kyiv passed a resolution declaring Ukraine to be an independent state. By the end of the year the USSR had fallen apart but Ukraine was still there. So at least legally, Ukraine is older than the current Russian Federation.

DW spoke with one of the parliamentarians who declared independence 33 years ago.

Despite Russia's genocidal aggression, Ukraine is still independent and free.

The music group МЮСЛІ UA (translation: Müsli Ukraine) produced this video which sampled bits of a speech made by President Joe Biden a year after Russia's illegal invasion.

Next site, Miniland UA, in Kyiv. It's the largest model of a railway in Ukraine. The creators wanted to show a model of Ukraine. It has recreations of actual Ukrainian buildings, such as Olesko Castle in Lviv, Oblast. I would love to go see this!

Fact Check: BBC Did NOT Produce, Broadcast A Report About Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska Attempting To 'Escape'

Did the BBC report that Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska tried to escape to Europe and was put under the guard of the national Security Service when the attempt failed? No, that's not true: In a statement to Lead Stories, a BBC spokesperson refuted the claim, referring to the viral video as "fabricated content that impersonates the BBC." No credible media organization ever reported the purported news.

The claim appeared in a post (archived here) published on X on April 4, 2025. It opened:

🇺🇦 UA | 🇪🇺 EU | 🏴‍☠️ NATO: Yelena Zelenska is reportedly unavailable to the media due to a failed escape attempt.

Zelensky's wife planned to flee to an unnamed European country. However, the escape failed and she is now under strict SBU guard. The alleged reason for the escape is a strained relationship with Volodymyr Zelensky and a number of unspecified political disagreements. Source in the image.

This is what the post looked like on X at the time of writing:

The shared video clearly displayed the BBC logo, implying that it was an authentic report by the British public broadcaster.

However, a BBC spokesperson told Lead Stories via email on April 8, 2025, that the broadcaster had nothing to do with the clip:

This is not BBC journalism. Whenever we are notified about fabricated content that impersonates the BBC we take the necessary action. We encourage everyone to use credible, trusted sources of news.

A Google search across the BBC website for the keywords seen here showed no matching reports published between the first day of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war and this writing:

A search for the same keywords (archived here) across credible media organizations indexed by Google News did not show a single outlet ever reporting the purported story:

The viral video on X suggested that Zelenska's "whereabouts are kept secret from the general public." While advanced security measures for high-ranking public figures are not uncommon when countries are at war, Zelenska did not entirely disappear from the public view. For example, on the day of the post's publication, a video of the Ukrainian First Lady (archived here) was uploaded to the website of Ukraine's President. One day earlier, the President's website published images of Zelenska (archived here) from an official meeting.

Ukraine's state-funded Center for Countering Disinformation said on X (archived here) that the claim about Zelenska was false, too.
