The Book of the Unnamed Midwife
An apocalypse is a horrifying event. In the right hands, fiction can take this deep fear and transform into a gorgeous piece of work, thoughtful and well crafted. This author has done an amazing skill: taking a bleak landscape and making you care for a world that has descended into chaos.
Like other apocalypse novels, this one begins with a flu that kills most of the people who contract it. In this world, woman are dis-proportionally  affected and childbirth becomes a fruitless endeavor. This story follows one woman who survives and is looking for a reason to live. Trained as a nurse and midwife, she searches for women to help and a reason to keep going. This novel stands out for its honesty, and unflinching look at how the world treats and views women. Bleak but powerful story-telling is a mix of POV's and storytelling which further makes for an interesting twist on a possible world changing event.

Trouble is a friend of mine If you are looking for a YA mystery novel that's funny with an edge - this just might be the book for you! Zoe is just your average teenager. Her parents divorce leads to a move from NYC to a small upstate town. She just wants to fit in and lay low until she can transfer to a prep school. Her plans fall apart the moment she meets Digby. Instead of a few weeks at a boring, cliquey high school living her her annoying, space cadet mom, Zoe's life is filled with hiding in dumpsters, getting hustled by her friends, escaping murder and explosions, not to mention confronting her views on herself and her parents marriage. Full of problematic teens, creepy adults and lackluster parenting, this book made me relive high school in a way I hadn't felt in a while. Funny and honest, this was a great YA for hitting nostalgia and mystery itches.

So excited for #DiverseAthon this year! It’s running from Jan 22nd to Jan 29th. This event simply asks readers to “celebrate diversity in literature by reading diverse books all week”. You can get ideas for reads and participate in discussion on social media by using and following the hashtag #diverseathon and #readdiverse2017 and the @diverseathon twitter.
Some of my picks are these two fantastic books that were released recently Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson and Whatever Happened to Interracial Love by Kathleen Collins.
Are you participating? Let me know and show me what you plan on reading!!

The Book of Harlan follows the life of a young man born in the early twentieth century in Georgia and his encounters with the historical events both in the US and abroad.
Lyrical and evocative, the novel reads more like interconnected short stories, introducing a wide range of amazing characters and their own beautiful stories.
The book is billed as a WWII novel, but in reality it covers a wide range of events that black Americans were part of and witness to in the most turbulent century the world has endured. The best thing you can take away from the novel is the sense of history doing much deeper and nuanced than is taught in America and a desire to know more. It will make you want to take a plunge into NYC real estate politics, the Korean War, and how POC were treated after serving in WWII.

“Books are, let’s face it, better than anything else. If we played a cultural Fantasy boxing league, and made books go fifteen rounds in the ring against the best that any other art form had to offer, then books would win pretty much every time” - Nick Hornby
