“I don’t think they’re ready for the fall, had a little, and now she wants more. Told her I gotta make some calls, This just might be one hell of a night”. - The Walls by Chase Atlantic

The sports section has always been your favorite part of the newspaper. Reading about athletes making history was so inspiring. This is what ignited your interest in sports journalism. You’d get involved in the school newspaper in high school, almost covering all the sports. You were always on a high, but it came crashing down when you entered college. Entering the Daily Bugle as the only female reporter has its downside. Your male peers would always look down on you, trying to discourage you from touching sports. Quoting your editor in chief, “Leave the sports reporting to the men who take it seriously, and report on something simple, like the upcoming musical”. But you were determined to make your mark in the world as a sports journalist.
You were staring at your computer for the last ten minutes trying to figure out the perfect conclusion for the basketball article. Your eyes wondered towards the time on the upper right hand corner.
4:40 pm
“I’ll finish it during english”.
You shut off your laptop and slid it in your bag
Your evening class is on the other side of the college, and unfortunately, you don’t own a car or a scooter so you have to walk 15 minutes from your dorm to your designated building. On your way to your class, you would usually pass by the baseball field, where the baseball teams begins to prep for the season.
While walking by the baseball field, you hear the sound of baseballs being hit by bats, the whistles being blown by the coach and the players yelling at each other to run.
As you continue your walk down, you hear a baseball being whacked and cheers from other players.
“Way to go Sato”! One person cheered.
You see the baseball fly over the fence, but before you could move out of the way, everything went pitch black.
~
Moments later you wake up in a bright, unfamiliar room. Your head was pounding, and a cold pack was sitting on your forehead.
You try to sit up, but you felt too dizzy.
A woman, who you assume was the school medic, came up to you and helped you sit up.
“What happened”? You ask.
“Isn’t it obvious? You got hit with a baseball. You were out for almost 5 hours”. She said.
“Oh”. You look down, feeling embarrassed.
“Young lady, you shouldn’t be walking near the baseball field. Especially when there’s practice going on. You’re lucky it’s just a mild concussion”. The medic lectured you.
“It’s the only way I get to my class”. Then your stomach sinks. You look at the clock.
9:32 pm.
“Fuck, I missed the lecture”! You cussed in your head. And then the realization settles in.
“FUCK I MISSED THE DEADLINE”! You groaned while you bury your head in your hands. You can kiss your journalism dreams goodbye.
“I don’t care what excuse you have. I swear, you college kids are so careless. As soon as you’re able to, get out of my office and try to find a ride home”. She puts another ice pack onto your head and leaves you to wallow in your misery.
“Well, isn’t she delightful”. An unfamiliar voice says.
You look up to see a 6 ft tall guy with raven hair leaning against the door frame.
“Dorthy is usually snappy at this point. I wouldn’t take it personally”. He enters the room and approaches you.
“Can I help you”? You ask
“I wanted to apologize to you, for accidentally hitting you with that baseball”. He scratched his neck.
“Oh, so that was you”. You glared at the guy while fixing the ice pack on your head.
“Yeah, I guess my strength was too much”. He laughed, trying to lighten the mood. You were still unamused.
“It’s a little late, shouldn’t you be heading home”?
“I wanted to know if you were okay”.
“Aww how thoughtful”.
“I’m Kenji. Kenji Sato. Baseball rookie today, baseball legend tomorrow”. He brags.
“Kenji… aren’t you the same Kenji that scored 5 home runs in a row at that one game against Florida state two years ago”?
He smirks. “So you’re a fan”.
“Not really, but I remember it made headlines for the school paper . You’re pretty impressive for a freshman”.
“For a freshman huh”? He laughs.
“Hey, it’s a compliment pretty boy”. You lean back into the chair.
“You know, I never got your name pretty girl”.
“Y/N. Y/N L/N”. You extend your hand and Kenji shook it.
“Well Y/N. I want to make this up to you. Y’know, I haven’t had dinner yet. You maybe want to join me?”
“Sure. What do you have in mind”?
~
“Wait, so that was you who broke the dean’s window”? Your eyes widened.
“No one knows aside from my buddies on the team. Consider it an inside scoop”. Kenji winks.
The waiter sets down a pepperoni pizza down on the table. The smell of the sizzling meat and cheesy goodness reached both of your noses, making both of your mouths water.
You guys ate all of the pizza in under five minutes. More of Kenji eating everything considering his metabolism. A few minutes later, he pushed the dish aside and leaned back in his chair.
“So Y/N, why journalism? Specifically sports journalism”? He interogates.
“I used to be apart of the school newspaper back in high school. Something about watching the games and interviewing athletes has always peaked my interest. If you ask me, it’s better than reporting on politics or school plays”. You sipped on your water.
“Ahhh, so you’re nosy”.
“Y’know if it weren’t for us being nosy, you wouldn’t get your 15 minutes of fame”. You say, making Kenji chuckle
“So, any articles you’re working on”?
“Well, I wrote one on basketball team but I missed the deadline because somebody knocked me out with a baseball”.
Kenji shrunk down into his seat. “Sorry about that. Really”.
“Don’t worry, I usually don’t hold grudges.”
“Well look on the bright side, you got a new story”. He says.
“Aspiring journalist gets knocked out by the famed Kenji Sato”.
You laughed. “As much as that would make a really great story, nobody at that the Daily Bugle takes me seriously”. You sighed, playing with the straw inside your cup.
“How come”? He raised his eye brow.
“According to my editor, and to all the men at the daily bugle, “leave the sports to the men”. You quote.
“That sounds pretty toxic. You deserve a chance to show the world how crazy talented you are with words. You deserve better than that place you’re in Y/N”.
“As much as I want to, I’m willing to stay. I’m very determined to prove myself. Even if I have to get my hands dirty”.
“You are persistent”.
“I prefer ambitious”.
“I like ambitious women”.
“Sure you do”.
~
For the last few weeks, you kept seeing Kenji. He would walk you to your classes, bring you coffee when you had a bad day at the Daily Bugle. Whenever he didn’t have baseball practice, you two would either go out for dinner or hang out at your dorm. There was something about his company that never made you feel lonely.
You came to one of Kenji’s games. Not as a reporter, but as a supporter. Despite being a little sad that the editor will never let you write for the sports section, you showed up for Kenji.
“And here comes number 7, right on the bat”. The announcer says as he walked up to the home plate.
You watched in concentration as he got into position. Everyone’s eyes were on him, hoping he would bring them another win. The pitcher throws the ball and Kenji knocks the ball out of the park.
“AND ITS ANOTHER GRAND SLAM BY KENJI SATO! GIVING THE BUGLES ANOTHER WIN”! The announcer shouts into the microphone.
You cheered the loudest for Kenji as he ran through all of the bases. He made eye contact with you and winked at you, making you blush a bit.
~
You were leaning against the wall of the locker room, waiting for Kenji to come out. All of the baseball players were outside cheering and screaming like animals, celebrating another win.
“I didn’t expect you to come”. You hear Kenji say. He walked up to you, his duffle bag in one arm, and his helmet in another.
“I’m an aspiring sports journalist. Of course I’d show up”. You walk up to him.
“You played well today”.
“Thanks”
You and Kenji walk out of the stadium
“So, any plans after this”?
“Well”… You began to think. “I was thinking about heading back to my dorm, curl up in bed and watch TV”.
“Damn, I was planning on asking you if you wanted to come back to my place, but if it’s that important to you, then who am I to stop you”.
“Well, that also doesn’t sound like a bad idea. But shouldn’t you be with your team, celebrating”? You gestured to the group of men screaming like chimpanzees.
“I don’t usually go out with the team. Win or loose”. He puts his helmet on and walks over to his bike.
“Wow, didn’t take you as an introvert”.
Kenji turns in the ignition on his bike.
“Are you coming or not”?
~
You were at the kitchen in Kenji’s apartment fixing him a grilled cheese and popping a bottle of wine as a reward for Kenji’s hard work. As you set the grilled cheese on the plate, Kenji immediately grabs it and takes a bite.
“Wait, it’s still”- But before you could warn him, the burning sensation has already hit Kenji’s tongue. He yelps at the sudden burn. Tears well in the corner of his eye as he throws the grilled cheese back onto the paper plate.
“You should’ve waited for it to cool down”. You scolded.
“Hey, I’m just really hungry. Cut me some slack will you”? He says, drinking his wine.
“Awww are you crying”? You notice the tear threatening to slide off his face.
“What? I never cry”. He crosses his arms.
“It’s okay to cry every once in a while”. You laugh as you swipe the tear off with your thumb. He leans into your touch as his onyx eyes fixated onto your (eye color) orbs. He leans closer, both of your faces inches apart from each other. And out of the blue, Kenji’s lips landed onto yours. You kiss back, tasting the red wine aftertaste. He lifts you up on the counter, and you wrap your legs around him. The air around you gets hotter, as it turns into a male out session. The next thing you know, he carries you into his room and shuts the door behind him.
~
You woke up with the sun hitting your eyes. Realizing that you were not in your own room and not wearing any clothes, the panic begins to settles in. You tried but there was a strong grip around your waist You turn around to see Kenji sleeping peacefully next to you.
“Oh no, this is bad”. You panicked. If your peers at the Daily Bugle hear about you sleeping with an athlete, they’ll never take you seriously.
You slowly got out of bed, trying your best not to wake up Kenji. As you got out of his room, you were attempting to put your 3 inch heeled boots back on, accidentally kicking the wall in the process.
“Shit”. You muttered while putting on the other boot.
You quickly slipped out of Kenji’s apartment without waking him up, already arranging your ride home.
While waiting outside the apartment building, you remembered what Kenji said, about you deserve something better than the Daily Bugle. Kenji was there for you and now you’re just leaving him. Screw what everyone thought of you. You liked Kenji, and it’s clear that he might feel the same. You went back up to his apartment. When you were about to knock, you noticed the door was slightly open. Peeping through the crack, you see Kenji talking to another guy that was probably his roommate.
“Dude, what happened to you last night? You totally ditched the team again”! The guy asks.
“Let’s just say I scored another one last night”. Said Kenji.
“Oh shiii, Kenji you dog”! His roomate laughs. “Who was it? Was it Tiffany from sports psychology”?
“No”.
“Rosalie from the dance squad”?
“No. Hint: she’s apart of the Daily Bugle”.
It took his roommate a minute, then his eyes widened and his jaw dropped.
“SHIT YOU DID NOT”.
“I did”.
“You do realize people look down on stuff like this, it’s like an integrity thing”.
“I know, which is why that scores me double”.
“But if word goes out, the coach is gonna have your head”
“It’s not like anyone has to know, anyways she ran off before I could officially walk her out. I wasn’t too attached to her anyway”. Said Kenji.
“But don’t you still care about her”? His roomate asks, a bit of hope glimmered in your eyes.
“Pfft no, she’s some that I accidentally injured. I take her out for pizza one time and she still thinks I’m taking her seriously”. He laughs.
You stood there dumbfounded. The whole time Kenji was just using you to increase his body count?
Before you could hear any more of the conversation, you left the apartment building. You entered the taxi, tears threatening to spill. To think that a guy, let alone an athlete, actually respected you. You were stupid to believe that you had someone care about you.
A fire ignited in your belly that day. You were determined to prove all of the men wrong, to prove Kenji wrong. Even if it meant hurting him, and other people to get yourself on top.

“Now I see you out here on your own, and you been. Sippin' on the Hennessy, like you don't remember me. Girl, we both know, don't pretend. That we ain't got history” - Tension by Jack & Jack

Ken waved at you as you pull up in his driveway. As soon as you opened the trunk, Kenji immediately took your bags.
“I could’ve done it myself”. You said.
“I wanted to be a gentleman”. Ken mockingly bows.
“Whatever”. You sighed as you follow him into his home.
You look around his spacious house. He has everything. A nice kitchen, a huge living room, a view of the ocean. Not gonna lie, you were pretty impressed.
“Were you always this spoiled”? You turn to Ken.
“Being an only child has his perks”. He says as he walks up to you with a cup of coffee. “Consider it an olive branch”. He extend the mug to you.
“Thank you”. You take the mug from him.
“Now, before we begin the two month long interview, I want to make two things clear”. Kenji begins. “One, you’re allowed to ask me anything, but I get to choose what to answer”.
“Then what’s the point of me asking you questions if you’re just gonna dodge them”.
“Anyways”. He continues,
“The second and most important thing, you’re free to roam around here but you’re not allowed in the basement”. He
“What’s in the basement”? You ask.
“None of your business”. He retorts.
“Alright then”. You put your hands up in defense.
“I look forward to the next two months. You will not be disappointed”. He extends his hand to shake.
“I look forward to this being over”. You smirked as you shake his hand.
~
The first couple of weeks, you were adjusting to your new environment. Despite you trying to be in good graces with him, you still found him annoying.
One time, you were in the living room peer reviewing an article when Ken enters the room with a jump rope. You paid no attention to him as he did his exercise in front of the glass window. But Kenji being the little prick he is, took off his shirt and threw it on the couch, landing on your head. You threw it down on the ground in disgust and looked to see Ken doing little tricks with his jump rope. All while being shirtless. He knows his plan is working when you noticed you staring at his reflection through the glass window.
“Like what you see”?
“I’d rather be hit by a baseball again”. You closed your laptop and walked off.
During your first interview with him, he was avoiding your questions and changing the subject left and right.
“You know, you said I get to ask you anything, and yet you’re not answering any of my questions”. You said.
“Remember rule number ? I get to pick and choose what questions to answer. Also, you said to “be honest”. He says while using air quotes.
“Being honest means answering the questions correctly”. You deadpanned.
“Oh, I didn’t know I was supposed to tell you what you wanted to hear. Is that how you managed to end an athlete’s career? By manipulating them into telling you their secrets and use it against them”? Ken presses on.
“That’s not how journalism works Ken, I just report what i see and hear. I don’t need to manipulate anyone. If it causes a disruption in an athlete’s career, then so be it”. You cross your arms.
“You’re evil, you know that”? Ken glares at you.
“You’re impossible, you know that”? You retort.
“If me being impossible means seeing how sexy you look riled up, then yeah, I love being impossible“. He says.
You stood up and bend down on the table. His eyes met yours, both of your faces inches away from each other.
“Fuck off”. You sneered, ending the recording. You straightened your back and grabbed your recorder off the table. “I’m so over this”. You roll your eyes.
“Oh okay. Well the door is right behind you. Although a little FIY, if you walk out that door, it’s bye bye journalism career”. He leans back all smug.
You groan. Of course he’s going to bring up the blackmail, and it won’t stop until it’s over. Anger boils inside of you. He’s making this interview and your life a living hell. You really want to slap Ken in the face, but your integrity is keeping you from getting potentially fired.
Ken starts to laugh at you. “If only you could see what I see… you look super red right now. I should piss you off more often”.
The interview ended early and Ken ran off to “take care of business”, while you went back to the guest room, and took out your frustrations on a pillow.
~
When it came to watching Ken’s games, he paid for a private box, isolating you from everyone from the media. Some of your coworkers side eyed you, but all you could do was just sit there. You’d watching giants loose over and over again. From him attempting to break a bat, to his emotional breakdowns at home. Apart of you found this amusing. But another part of you feels a bit of sympathy.
You left the guest room to get a glass of water, when you saw Ken in the kitchen stuffing mochi donuts in his face.
“You know that’s not really healthy”. You commented.
He looks at you and takes another bite out of the donut. He pushes the donut box towards you implying for you to take one, but you declined.
For some reason, you feel bad for him. Sure, he’s annoying and rude, but you noticed that he wasn’t as confident as he was during college. Even during your interviews, he didn’t make any snarky comments and instead gave out short and closed off answers. It made you wonder what going on with him.
The next evening, Ken came home all tired and defeated. As he laid down on the couch, a sweet and tangy aroma caught his attention. He peaks into the kitchen to see you cooking something.
“Whatcha doing?” He asks.
“I’m making dinner”. You said.
“Why”?
“Cause I’d rather not eat a box of donuts”. You gestured to the unopened box of mochi donuts on the kitchen counter
He looks at you confused. You never do anything nice. Like ever.
“Go sit, food’s almost ready”. You gestered to the table as you took the asparagus out of the oven.
Five minutes later, you put down a plate with some teriyaki salmon and oven roasted asparagus, and then placed a bowl of white rice on the side.
“Smells good”. He compliments before taking a bite of his teriyaki salmon. His eyes widened. The flavors were bursting on his tounge, something he hasn’t experienced in weeks.
“Y’know, you didn’t have to do all of this”. Ken says with a mouthful of rice and salmon, making you internally gag.
“I wanted to. Considering how long I’ll be staying here, I’d rather not eat junk food everyday”. You said, taking a bite of the asparagus before continuing. “Also, I felt bad for pushing you the last few weeks”. You admitted.
“It’s not really a big deal, you were just doing your job. I promised you the exclusive, and I didn’t fulfill my end of the bargain. I’m sorry”.
“Wow, an apology from Ken Sato. Can I quote you on that”? You joked.
“Haha, funny”. He rolled his eyes as he finished the last of his rice. “The food’s good. Y’know if you were my personal chef instead of my interviewer, I would’ve probably tolerated you more”.
“Aaaand you ruined it”. You begin to get up out of your seat.
“Gee, didn’t know there was a moment between us”.
While you were collecting the dirty plates, you both felt the ground shake. At first you thought you were just imagining things, but the ground shook again, and the lights were flickering. You try to maintain your balance as the ground repeatedly shook.
“Oh my God, was that an earthquake”? You begin to panic.
Kenji quickly got up from his seat and began to run towards the basement.
“Ken, where are you going”? You yelled.
“I’ll be right back. Stay where you are”. He instructs. The next thing you know, he disappears into the basement. The ceiling began to crack and you immediately took cover underneath the table.
A few seconds later, the shaking stops and the light stops flickering. But Ken was nowhere to be found. The elevator leading to the basement was still open. While you were told to not go into the basement, deep down you wanted to know if he was okay.
Suddenly, you hear a crash and yelling coming from the basement. With no hesitation, you ran into the elevator and made your way down to the basement.
“Ken”? You ran out of the elevator. But before you could start looking for him, you ran into what you thought was a wall. As you stumbled down and into your butt, you hear high pitch laughter.
“Not funny”! You yelled. “Ken Sato, whatever BS you’re pulling right now, you need to cut it”-
You look up at the supposed wall and your jaw drops. Your eyes met the eyes of a 20 foot lizard baby who was happily chirping at you.

IN THE PAST AND IN EVERY LIFETIME
KENJI SATO X READER

“And if death do us part, I promise to find you in every lifetime” - Alex Warren

Your fiance kisses your forehead while he pulls you closer to him. You rested your head on his chest while admiring the small diamond ring that glimmered in the moonlight.
“It’s beautiful”.
“I’m glad you like it. When I saw it at the shop, it made me think of you”.
“It’s perfect”.
He lifts up your chin and plants a warm, soft kiss on your lips as the bells of a near by clock tower signals the start of a new year and a new decade.
“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you, and if death do us part, I will always look for you in every lifetime”.
“Happy New Years Y/N”…
“Y/N”! Your friend Asami yells at you, snapping you out of your day dream.
“We’re here”. She points to the bookstore.
“Oh sorry”. You apologized as she drags you into the place.
~
As soon as the two of you entered the bookstore, the smell of coffee and new books hit your nostrils. There was an end-of-the-year sale at Asami’s favorite bookstore and she insisted you come along. You took this as an opportunity to find books for your research paper for the psychology PhD program. While the two of you were looking at books, Asami caught you zoning out again.
“Y/N”! She snaps her fingers getting you out of your trance. “I’m here”! You said loudly, getting attention from other bystanders.
“Seriously, what is up with you? Did you pull an all nighter again? Like I get it’s your thesis paper, but you do realize sleep is important right”? Asami says while skimming through a random book.
“No, it’s not about the paper. I keep having this dream for like the past month and it’s been bothering me”. You say while skimming through the bookshelves.
“Oooh do tell”. Asami looks at you with curiosity.
“In the dream, I was with a guy and we were at this park filled with snow, and he proposed to me under a tree”.
“Man, I wish I had a dream about a guy”. Asami shakes her head and laughs.
“Asami, I’m being serious. It’s like, the dream is telling me to remember this guy, but I really don’t”.
“No offense but I think you’re reading way too many psychology books. I think it’s time to switch genres”.
"That's not how psychology works". You deadpan.
“Anyways, I gotta use the bathroom. BRB”. Asami puts down the book she was looking at and takes off, leaving you alone to wonder off.
You were walking around trying to find a book you’ve been wanting to use for your paper. After a few minutes of searching, you spot a large textbook sitting on the top shelf.
"Only one copy left".
You notice a step ladder near the bookshelf and begin to climb it. As soon as you reached the last step of the ladder, you stood on your tippy toes and you reached for the book. After a few attempts, you managed to get your book. But before you could climb back down, the screws of the ladder unscrewed itself, causing the step to break. You fall off and braced for impact, only for a guy to catch you.
“Woah, has anyone ever told you not to climb on faulty ladders? ”. The man puts you down before you could get a better look at him.
“Sorry”. You looked down in embarrassment. The man picks the book you dropped from the floor.
“Here, you should be more careful next time”. His speech slowed down as he made eye contact with you. His arm was frozen in place, the book still in his hand. You look at the man and his features. For some reason, he looks so familiar. It feels like you’ve met him before, but you don’t know where.
“Ummm… thank you”. You grabbed the book from him and began to walk away.
“Y/N”? You turn back to him.
“Yeah”?
“I thought I’d never see you again”. He muttered out loud.
“I’m sorry, do I know you”? You ask, feeling really creeped out.
“Oh”. He clears his throat. “I’m sorry, it’s just, you look like someone I knew from a long time ago”.
“Y/N”! Asami calls out to you. “There you are! I was looking for you! You have got to stop wandering around girl”! Asami notices the guy and looks up and down in disgust. “Shall we head to the register”? She says, slowly dragging you away from the man.
“WAIT”! You and Asami turn back at the man in annoyance.
“I know we just met, but, I want to take you out on a date”. He grabbed a pen from his pocket, took your book and wrote down his number and his name on the first page.
“Text me and we’ll set something up”. He walked away, leaving you stunned.
“Girl, who was that”? Asami asks.
You look down at the page. “I don’t know, but I think i’m about to find out”.
~
You were waiting for the mystery guy to arrive. Of all the days to meet up, he picked New Year’s eve. Despite being really busy, he managed to get a reservation at what is coincidentally your favorite cafe.
From the information you gathered from Asami’s stalker account, the man that saved you from falling on your ass at the book store, was none other than Ken Sato. Turns out he’s a baseball player for the giants, and according to Asami, he is LOADED.
You feel a buzz from your phone. Thinking it was a message from Ken, you opened your phone, only to get a text message from Asami.
“I really hope your date goes well! But if he tries to attempt some serial killer shit, it’s on sight”.
“Asami, you’ve been reading too many horror novels. You should consider switching genres. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine”.
As you send the text message, Kenji runs into the cafe. You wave at him, catching his attention.
“I'm sorry for being late”. Ken sits down. “There was traffic downtown. Another kaiju incident”. He huffs.
“It’s, fine. I’m glad you made it”. You smiled at him.
The waiter took your orders and placed some tea in a white porcelain teapot down, along with two white teacups. He leaves with the menus, leaving you and Ken to bond.
“I’ve always wanted to try this place. This cafe looks cozy”. Ken looks around at the aesthetically pleasing decor.
“The food here is to die for! This is literally my favorite cafe since forever”. You said. Ken nodded.
“From what I’ve read, this place has been open since the 70’s”. He begins to pour some tea into your cup.
“I love how everything is so simple”. You take a sip from your tea. As soon as the hot liquid touches your mouth, it stings your tongue.
“Ahh, hot”! You yelp. Ken chuckles as you pout.
“Something’s never changed”. He chuckles as he shakes his head.
You look at him in bewilderment.
“Sorry," He cleared his throat. "I'm probably creeping you out”. He twiddled his thumbs, looking super stressed out.
“I’m sorry Ken”…
“Kenji. Call me Kenji”. He interrupts.
“Okay, Kenji, have we met before? Because when we met at that bookstore, you said you thought you would never see me again”.
“You really don’t remember me”? Kenji says, his gray eyes looking at you with disappointment.
“Well, the thing is, I think you’re the guy that keeps appearing in my dreams . I thought you were someone I made up, but it turns out you’re real, and you’re sitting right in front of me”.
“Am I supposed to”? You ask
Kenji looks down at his tea, the clumps of sugar that he put in a minute ago beginning to dissolve.
“Umm, nevermind. So, tell me about yourself”.
The conversation lasted for hours. Everything felt so casual between the two of you. Kenji told you how he led the Giants to the championships; despite almost dragging them six feet underground. He had to use simpler terms when describing some of the plays since you weren’t much of a sports fan. On the other hand, you were telling him how you were trying to pursue your PhD in psychology, and how it’s always been your dream to get your doctorate degree. Kenji admired the bright look on your face while you talked about your passion.
While you were having a great time with Kenji, you have a gut feeling that he has something to do with your dreams. He knows something you don’t, and you want to know what he’s hiding.
Eventually, the waiter had to kick you out of the cafe because they were closing early for the holiday. As you two stepped out in the cold, the sun was almost gone, and the sky became darker.
“I don’t really feel like going home yet. Wanna head down to the park with me”? Kenji asks.
“Umm, sure"!
As you walk to the park, Kenji grabs your hand. You look up at him and smile. There was something familiar about this warm feeling, like deja vu. When you reach the park, you can see the patch of snow that stretches down for miles. While walking down the semi-icy path, you keep thinking about Kenji's motives. He's not telling you anything, and couldn't take any more secrets.
“Kenji, can you be honest with me”? You blurt out.
He looks down at you.
“How come you remember me, but I don’t remember you? What are you not telling me”?
Kenji sighs and looks at the ground. You stood there, your arms crossed, waiting for him to answer you.
“This might sound weird. Like out of a novel weird”.
“Try me”.
“Okay, but first, come with me”. Kenji grabs your hand and drags you along.
“Where are we going”? You ask.
“You’ll see”.
You both go deeper into the park, where all the trees divide the park and the streets and where there is no one in sight. The more you both go down the path, the more your anxiety starts to peak.
“Oh my God, what if Asami was right? What if he is an actual serial killer and he planned your demise since your first encounter”?
But a familiar setting caught your eye before you could think of any worst-case scenarios. You were standing in front of a tree covered in snow. The same tree that was in your dream sequence.
“Look familiar”? Kenji asks.
“Actually yeah”. You turn to him. “What are we doing here”? You ask him.
“This was the place where I proposed to you”.
“Proposed to me”?
Your brain clicked as you piece everything together. The repeated dream you had was a memory from the past.
“You’re the guy… you’re the guy from my dreams”. Your eyes widen
“So you do remember”!
“Not exactly”. You shrug.
Kenji takes both of your hands. You look up at him. His soft gaze locked onto you.
“Y/N, you and I were together in our past life”.
You stared at him like a deer in headlines. You’ve read about past lives in an article before, but you didn't think it was real.
“December 31st, 1979”. He starts. “I took you to that cafe, y'know the one we went to today, and then we walked down to this very same park and I proposed to you here”.
You still look at Kenji in shock. You tried to say something, but you couldn't form any sentences.
“I understand it’s a lot to process”. Said Kenji.
“No, no I sort of understand now. Although, I don’t remember anything after that”.
Kenji looks down at the ground. “Six months after the New Year, we were in a car crash. I only suffered a broken leg. But your injuries were too severe. You didn’t survive in surgery”.
“Oh”.
“That day, I promised myself that I would find you again, and when I did, I would never let you go”.
Kenji takes out a small black box. He opens it to reveal a small diamond ring, the same one he proposed with all those years ago.
“Kenji”…
“I know we just met again, and I don’t expect you to remember anything, but you are my soulmate, Y/N. I never want to lose you again". Kenji puts the ring on your finger. The small diamond ring glimmering in the moonlight.
Everything comes flooding back to you. The guy was Kenji. He's real. Everything that happened in your dream is real. Kenji pulls you closer to him. Your lips were inches away from his. He closes the gap between the two of you. Your heart swells as he hugs you tighter. The two of you separate, trying to catch your breath. You admired the ring, reminiscing how beautiful it was, how it felt so right on your ring finger.
“It’s perfect”. You smile.
“I know, but it’s not as perfect as you”. He smiles
You blush. “I can’t believe you waited for me”.
“I did promise you all those years ago, that if death do us part, I will always look for you in every lifetime”.
The bells of a nearby clock tower signaling the start of a new year.
“Happy New Year Y/N”.
“Happy New Year Kenji”.
You kiss Kenji again as the sound of the clock tower bells continue to echo across the park.

Alex and Kovur’s wedding is everything!!! I want something like that someday!! Also, the bookstore scene was inspired by a Tinder ad with Lana Condor lol.
IMPORTANT A/N: I will be going international for a few weeks so everything might be on hold for a bit. But I have a few things cooking. Also, stay tuned next Friday/Saturday for a little surprise.

The Falling Action
Kenji Sato x Journalist! Reader
Enemies To Lovers | Foced Proximity | Pining
A/N: Thus chapter is a tad angsty. Also, the plot line from the film slightly changed, so in this case his dad doesn’t make an appearance in this series”.

That night, you were talking false prophets and profits they make in the margins of poetry sonnets. You never read up on it, shame could've learned something.
Us by Gracie Abrams ft Taylor Swift

You were at the library studying for your journalism exam next week. With the editor finally taking you seriously and letting you cover more games, and finals coming up, you were stressed out.
While reviewing your notes, you felt the table slightly shake, along with the sound of something slammed onto the table. You look up to see an angry Kenji Sato looking down at you. You took your headphones off and looked at him up and down.
“Can I help you”? You deadpanned.
“What the fuck is this”? He point at the paper that he slammed on the table.
“Kenji Sato, the next irrelevance in baseball”
“My truth”?
“It’s just one game Y/N, ONE. FUCKING. GAME”! He slams his fist on the table, unfazing you.
“So? I report what I see”.
“Do you realize what this does to my career? My status on the team is on the line, my reputation, is about to be in shambles. Nobody is gonna sign me because of you”! Kenji raised his voice to the point where he was grabbing the attention of everyone around the two of you.
“If you don’t like what you see, you should try harder next time”. you retorted.
He lets out a laugh. “You know, I don’t even know why I came here in the first place. Considering the person who wrote this knows how to sleep her way through a sports team”.
You stood up angrily, slamming your hands onto the table.
“I work to get what I want. Between the two of us, I don’t sleep with other people just to increase a body count”.
“At least I have natural talent”
“At least I don’t talk shit about another girl to their roommate while she watches”.
Ken stood there in silence. Everyone was staring at the two of you. A couple of bystanders were whispering to each other and side eyeing you.
“Now if you excuse me, some of us are trying to survive finals week”. You sat back down and put your headphones back on, turning up the volume of your music.
Kenji growled, snatching the paper off the table and walking away. But then he turns back to you.
“I’ll show you. Just wait and see. I’ll become the greatest living player! Then we’ll see who the irrelevant one is”.
“Mhm, keep telling yourself that”.
~
Your faced turned white as a ghost as you come face to face with a baby kaiju. You wanted to run, but your feet were glued to the floor, and your knees locked itself.
“Y/N? I can explain”. You hear Kenji say.
He tried to calm you down, but you tuned him out and you still stood there in fear while the Kaiju chirps happily at you.
“W-W-Why is there a kaiju in your basement”? You whisper.
The Kaiju approaches you slowly, curious about the tiny person in front of her.
“Please don’t eat me”. You cried.
“It’s okay, she’s harmless”. He reassures you.
You slowly approach the kaiju, hesitant to touch her. She crouched down to your level, consenting for you to pat her head. You gently pat her head, making her chirp. You and Kenji smile as she clapped and jumped happily.
~
“Why did you go down to the basement when I told you not to”? He interrogated you while you sipped on your coffee.
“The more important question here is why are you keeping a kaiju in your basement”? You gestured to the baby pink lizard that’s now sleeping in the containment tube. Kenji sighs, running his hands through his hair. You slowly turn to him, the realization hitting you.
“Holy shit”.
Kenji didn’t look at you.
“HOLY SHIT”
“Theres a lot more to it than you think. But promise me you won’t tell anybody about this”. He pleaded.
You sat up straight. You took your phone out of your pocket and you shut it off right in front of him. You then put it down on the table.
“You have my word”.
He goes on to explain what’s been going on the past few months. He tells you about taking his father’s place as Ultraman, which explains the excess damage in the city. He also tells you how he rescued the baby kaiju from the KDF and how he’s been trying to raise her alone.
“So the reason why you’ve been off your game lately is because you were taking care of the baby”? You ask.
“Yeah. It’s part of being Ultraman I guess”. He shrugged.
“That explains a lot of things”. The room fell silent for a moment before Kenji spoke up.
“You’re not going to add this to your article are you”? He worries.
“Ken, I’m not that inhumane. I promise you, I won’t tell anyone”. You said.
“Thank you”. Kenji sighs in relief.
“Does she have a name”?
“No, her name is just baby”.
“You’ve been taking care of a baby kaiju for two months, and you haven’t thought about giving her a name”?
“Well, I don’t see you giving me ideas”.
You sigh, you pinched the bridge of your nose and shook your head.
“I really am trying my best. With baseball, with raising “baby”, with everything. I want people to know that I want to be the best player and the best hero, but it’s hard when you really can’t tell anyone. It just feels so”…
“Isolating”?
“Yeah, also, the KDF is on my ass and well, my dad isn’t really around, so”..
You look at him with pity. Kenji was looking down at the ground, not knowing how to handle anything anymore. You scoot next to him and take his hand.
“Y’know, you don’t have to do this alone. If you need help, then I can step in. As much as I like seeing you suffer, I don’t want you to suffer.”
Kenji’s eyes widened. “Wow, you actually do care”. He said in disbelief. You roll your eyes. “Try to get some sleep. I’ll look over her”.
“You sure, I mean she’s kind of”-
“Good night Kenji”. You say, picking up a magazine and putting your legs on the table.
Kenji stared at you in bewilderment. He feared the day that you would find out and expose him in the tabloids. But to his surprise, you were more accepting, more human. He left the basement feeling much calmer, knowing that you’re ready to show up for him.
~
For the past 3 weeks, you kept your promises and helped Kenji take care of the baby kaiju (that you both named Emi) while he juggles his baseball career and his Ultraman duties.
While he caught up on sleep, you fed Emi her late night snacks and read her bed time stories.
While he was out, you cooked him healthy meals and prepare some heating packs incase he comes home with sore muscles. Everytime Kenji comes home in the evening, he would always look forward to the food that’s on the table. Whenever you weren’t busy with your job, he would ask you to have dinner with him. During those times, you guys would have a casual conversation. No forced interviews, no bickering or throwing insults. When it came to the interviews, he started to become more vulnerable. The exchange didn’t feel forced, and he became more genuine with you. What felt like a hundred year feud came to a close, and the two of you started to become friends.
You’ve noticed a huge change in Ken. He became a leader for his team, and a better hero for the city. Whenever the two of you bond, he showed off his softer side, a side you’ve grown to love.
Ken was very grateful for you. Although he hasn’t showed it, he’s glad to have you around. It made him smile whenever he sees you and Emi bonding. There was something about you that made his heart beat skip a beat. The way you would laugh at his attempts to make an actual joke during the interview session. Or the way you would passionately talking about the games you’ve been to when you went abroad.
The two of you know that your time with Ken is short lived. But deep down, Ken doesn’t know what he would do when you leave.
~
Kenji walked into the basement to find you sitting couch typing away on your laptop while looking after a sleeping Emi. It warmed Kenji’s heart that you were so accepting of Emi and everything else that has been going on.
You look up from your laptop and smile. “I’ve finished the revisions. Wanna take a look”? You give him your laptop. Kenji takes it from you and skims it.
“Inside Ken Sato’s Space”
Kenji skims each paragraph while quickly scrolling down, stopping at the last paragraph.
“What we all thought was an arrogant athlete, turns out to be a guy with a misunderstood, soft heart. Ken Sato has grown up, not only as an athlete, but as a human being. His newfound maturity has led to the giants to win after win. His leadership and confidence has not only impacted everyone on and off the field, but also in himself. His attitude continues to impact the Giants as they head to the championship game”.
“It’s perfect”. He smiled, handing your laptop back.
You scroll to the top of the page and hovered over the post now button.
“And posted”! You said as you closed your laptop. Kenji looks at you with so much admiration.
“What, you think it’s too cheesy”? You tease. Kenji laughs.
“No, no. I just… I never got to say thank you. For helping me with Emi, and for not taking a chance on me”.
“You don’t have to thank me. Emi is the sweetest”. You say as you filed your documents into a folder.
“Anyways, I was just thinking, I should take you out for dinner. As a thank you for tolerating for the past 2 months”.
“As much as I love being treated to a 5 star michelin restaurant, I think I know a better way to celebrate”.
~
You flipped the grilled cheese on the pan and turned off the stove. But before you could put it on the plate, Kenji takes it from the pan and takes a bite.
“Ah hot”! He yelps. You laughed at him as he throws the grilled cheese onto the porcelain plate.
“You really don’t learn from your mistakes”. You laugh.
“Hey, I’m just hungry”. He pouts.
You notice the crumbs at the corner of Kenji’s mouth and gently brushes it off. Kenji leans into your touch as he stares into your (e/c) eyes. Your breath hitched as his face inches closer to you. Your heart beats faster, waiting for him to make a move. But before you both could do anything, his watch started beeping. He looks down to see live camera footage of Emi, now awake from her nap.
“I should go check on her”. He says.
“I’ll wash the dishes”. You said, starting to grab the pan and knife from the stove.
~
You were putting the clean dishes onto the dish rack when you hear your phone ringing in the living room. You walked up to grab it, and when you turned it over, the adrenaline rushes through your body when you realize your boss was calling.
“Hi Daryl”. You immediately answer
“Y/N, have you checked your article? Your boss asks.
“Why, is there something wrong with it”? You ask.
“Just look at it”. Daryl demanded.
You looked at the website where your article was published, and your eyes widened.
900 K likes; 750 comments
“It hasn’t been 24 hours”.
“Well, believe it. Cause you did that Y/N. The company has been getting a lot of new subscribers for the sports page. Which leads me to another thing, my supervisor loves your work so much, that they want you to work a 2 year residency at the Norwegian office.
“Wait, Norway”?
“Yes, Y/N. Consider it a promotion. You definitely deserve it”. Daryl says.
You almost jumped for joy. It’s always been your dream to work in Norway. That’s where all of the best soccer and volleyball teams are. You managed to contain yourself before you freak out the whole house.
“You’re expected to start next month, until then, keep up the good work”. He says.
“Thank you, I promise I won’t let you down”. You say before Daryl hangs up.
You began to jump up and down and squealed with excitement. You’re finally getting the life you wanted, and there was nothing holding you back.
“Who was that”? You turn to see Kenji walking out of the elevator.
“That was my boss, Daryl”.
“Was there something wrong with the article”? Kenji asks.
“No, in fact, look how much reception it got”! You showed him the article on your phone. His eyes widened with the
“Wow, that is a lot of likes”. His eyes widened.
“I know, and it’s been only five hours”! You smiled ear to ear. “And the best part is, I’m offered a 2 year residency in Norway”!
“So you’re leaving again”?
“Well, yeah”.
Kenji’s smile faded. He was so used to having you here, but now you’re leaving again. To him, it felt like college all over again.
“Kenji”? He looks up at you.
“Are you okay”?
Kenji gives you a small smile. He puts his hand on your shoulder. “I’m happy for you, Y/N”.
You smiled back at him. “Thank you, Kenji”.
What you thought was a happy moment turned cold and distant during your final week with Kenji.
He would go out at night, and wouldn’t come back until early morning, blaming it on “ultraman duty”.
Whenever you tried to talk to him, he would either give you a short response or just not respond at all. And every time you walk in a room, Kenji would just leave.
One day, you were at the dining table, finalizing paperwork for Milan while eating some maple & brown sugar oatmeal. Kenji walked in the kitchen, not realizing you were there.
“Kenji”?
He didn’t look at you as he walked up to the fridge.
“I made some oatmeal. Do you want some”?
He grabbed his energy drink from the fridge and walked out of the kitchen. You got up and walked after him. You caught up with him, and blocked his path.
“Okay, what is going on with you? You’ve been straight up ignoring me for the last few days. What’s going on with you”?
“Nothing, Y/N”. Kenji begins to walk away. But you push him back.
“Kenji, please. Whatever I did wrong, please, just tell me”.
“What’s bothering me is that you’re leaving, again”.
“What are you talking about”?
“You have everything you wanted. You got everything right here. You don’t need Norway to prove a point”.
“This is MY career, Kenji. My life. I’ve built my whole life on my work, and I’m not letting you get in my way”.
“So I’m just another stepping stone for you huh”? He scoffs. “If only your college self could see you now”. He says with sarcasm.
Your eyes widened. “Wow, and here I thought you finally grew up”. You folded your arms”. “You’re so shallow”.
“And you’re just a pain in my ass”. Kenji retorts.
There was silence between the two of you. What you thought was a progressing friendship was now destroyed, pushing you both back to square one.
“This was a mistake. You should’ve left when you got the chance”. Kenji mutters
“And then what? If I did leave, were you going to blackmail me again”?
He looks up at you, meeting your (eye color) eyes. You stared him down with anger and disgust.
“For all I care, you can expose me whenever the fuck you want. I don’t care what people think of me, and I’m not scared of you”.
He knew he shouldn’t have put you up to this. That this whole interview process was a mistake. He hurt you and himself, and all he could do now is deal with the collateral damage.
“I want you out of here by tomorrow morning”.
“I’ll do you one better, I’ll leave right now”. You walk past him and entered the guest room. Kenji flinched at the sound of the door slamming shut.
~
You put the last suitcase in the trunk and closed the trunk door. Before you went in your car, you stared at the front door, hoping that Ken would apologize and ask you to come back in. But you shrug the expectation off and drove off.
As you drove into the city, you start to tear up. The interview was merely an assignment, so why is this affecting you so much?
“You don’t need Norway to prove a point”.
You hated Ken, you hated the way he roped you into this mess, how he played with your feelings again. But your heart screamed, “GO BACK”, while your head told you to press the gas pedal harder.
~
Kenji enters the basement where the baby kaiju was waiting for the both of you. She chirps with glee when she sees Kenji, and then she looks around for you.
“She’s not coming back”. He sighs, sitting down on the steps next to the baby’s containment unit. Her smile fades. She lets out a little whimper.
“I’m sorry Emi. I scared her off, and I don’t know how to fix this”. Kenji sat next to Emi and put his head in his arms. She settles down next to him in hopes of comforting her father. He leaned onto Emi, resting his head on her arm. It made him feel a little better, but the pain ran deeper in his heart. He had so many opportunities to tell you how he felt about you, but now you slipped through his fingers again.
“Nice going Ken”.

“Ken Sato has received a 3rd strike. One wonders, how hard is it to hit a small ball, I bet a one-eyed zombie could hit a ball better than he can”. You say into your recorder.
“Wow, you are harsh”. Ami says as you end your recording.
“It’s called being honest. I report what I see”. You reminded her. “I mean have you seen the way he played today”?
“Yes Y/N, we’ve been watching the same game. But it got me thinking. When I interviewed Ken, he refused to talk about his family. He refuses to show vulnerability. It’s like he’s wearing some sort of mask. Something is going on with him, and when I know something, I don’t let go”. Said Ami.
“Wow, you are very determined”.
“At least get to know him before you start roasting him”. Ami suggested.
“Note taken”. You lied.
After graduating college, you were hired as an intern at the Los Angeles Magazine. You would stay at the office after midnight to revise and edit articles for other reporters. Eventually, your boss gave you your first assignment. Coincidentally, at a baseball game. You took in every detail of every player, noting all of the small mistakes and flaws of the games. Everyone looked like they didn’t know how to play, much to your disappointment. But it made juicy material for you.
That night, you were writing like you were running out of time. The article you wrote was on some of the players and their failures. The morning after, you got called in to the editor’s office. At first you thought you were about to get fired, but your surprise, he complimented on your writing style, asking you to cover another baseball game. Eventually, you got promoted to journalist within 6 months of working there, naming you the youngest journalist in the field. A year and a half later, you were offered a job at the International Review Journal. They pay twice as much as the last salary and you get to travel for your job. It didn’t take too long for you to accept it, and the next thing you knew, you were on your way to make your mark in the world.
Everywhere you went, your words impacted people and the way they perceive their favorite athletes. All of the readers love you, while the athletes feared and hated you. You didn’t care for the love and hate. What matters is you were unstoppable.
Now here you are in Tokyo, Japan watching the Ken Sato struggle. You felt bad that the Giants were on a loosing streak, but you didn’t feel bad for Ken. It was his ego that brought him here after all. You leaned back in your chair with your recorder in your hand, while watching Ken having a temper tantrum in front of his coach.
~
As you walked out of the stadium, you were fishing out your car keys when you realized something was missing in your bag.
“Where’s my recorder”?
Panic starts to settle in as you looked through your tote bag.
“Looking for this”?
You turn around to see Ken Sato, waving your recording device in front of you.
“Well, if it isn’t the walking loosing streak. I would say great game, but let’s face it, i’ve seen better”. You sneered.
“Y/N L/N, the pain in my ass, Let me guess, obsessing with me as usual”? He asks
“I’m not obsessed with you, and even if I were, I would rather launch myself out of Tokyo on a ten foot pole than fan girl over a baseball fuck up”. You rolled your eyes.
“You have really creative comments Y/N. I think my favorite one has to be when you called me the hare who couldn’t beat the tortoise. But slower and more stupider”. He laughs.
“I also noticed that I’m the only person mentioned in your commentary. Am I just a cover for the fact that you know nothing about baseball”?
“Of course I know everything about baseball. I just like taking notes on the most notable failures in baseball history”. You scoffed
He lets out a laugh that still annoys you to this day. “It’s nice to know I have a fan”.
“Once again, the only person obsessed with you is you”. You retorted.
“Says the person who followed me all the way here from California”. He tossed your recorder to you. “I’ve read some of your stuff online. Judging by your writing style, you should consider a career in fanfiction writing instead of sports journalism”.
“Fuck off Ken”. You said.
While he turned around to walk away, you gave him the middle finger, and he stuck up his in return.
You rolled your eyes as you got into your car.
“What an asshole. And for the record, I was here first”. You aggressively push your car key into the ignition.
You were back in your apartment, editing your article on your gray velvet couch. You took a sip of your pineapple smoothie as you reread the last paragraph you’ve just written.
“Ken Sato, “the best living player”, is now the best living curse. From being on cloud 9 to falling into the pits of underworld, he might as well drag the giants along with him. Tread carefully Sato, consider yourself a dead man walking. If looks could kill, we wouldn’t be Coach Shimura”.
Is this considered slander? Possibly. But to you, it’s called journalism. And the best part of the job is the chaos it causes post-publish.
After rereading and editing, you hit publish. You sat back and watched as the likes and views came in.
Later that night, you were celebrating the success of your latest article, alone. You downed the last of your dirty shirley, feeling content with yourself and the hard work you’ve put in. You were about to ask for the bill, when the bartender placed a martini in front of you.
“I didn’t order this”. You look up at the bartender confused.
“It came from the gentleman in the black blazer”. He points to the man sitting at the end of the bar.
You look over with curiosity to see the man sitting at the end of the bar. Only to be disappointed when you realized the guy was Ken. He got up and walks up to you.
You glare at Ken as he approached you. “What do you want”?
“Can’t a man treat a cute girl to a drink”? He takes a seat next you.
You’ve been down this road before. After you publish an article, the athletes either bombards you with threatening emails or bribe you with money or expensive gifts. Either way, it didn’t faze you.
“If this is about the article, I’m not taking it down or tweaking it to your liking”.
“I usually don’t give a shit about what you personally think of me. However, my career is on the line because of you”. He said, his onyx eyes giving you the death stare.
“Awww, it’s not my fault the world thinks you suck. Go cry about it”. You roll your eyes.
“I’m not begging for you to delete the article. Instead, I’m offering you an opportunity”. Kenji proposes.
You turn your body towards him. “Go on”.
“You come live with me for the next two months, get the Kenji exclusive. You get to ask any question, and you get to follow me around. It’ll make great coverage for the sports magazine”. He leans back in his chair.
“Okay and why would I want to live with you”? You scoff.
Kenji smirks. “You can decline the once in a lifetime opportunity to do this interview, or I can tell everyone about our little escapade during college”.
You glared at him. “Excuse me”?
“Imagine if people found out that Ken Sato, a baseball legend and Y/N L/N, his biggest hater had a one night stand during our junior year. That would seriously affect your following and your career, wouldn’t it”? Kenji condescends, leaving you completely disgusted.
“You’re not the only one who can play dirty Y/N”. He smirks.
Of all the annoying things Kenji does, one thing you did not expect from him is to straight out blackmail you. Another is the fact that he’s right. If people found out you slept with an athlete, you can kiss your promotion goodbye. For once, you were backed into a corner, and there was nothing you could do or say to save yourself. Swallowing your pride, you decided to take the defeat.
“Fine. I’ll come shadow you”. You surrendered reluctantly.
Kenji smiles from ear to ear.
“But if you pull some shady shit on me, I’m ending it”. You threatened.
“Won’t be a problem”. Kenji pulls out a pen and writes something down on a napkin.
“Here’s the address to my house. Arrive at my place on Sunday at 9 am sharp”. He hands you the napkin and hands some cash to the bar tender.
“I look forward to this interview Y/N”. He winks at you as he leaves the bar. You sunk in your seat appalled.
“What the fuck did I just agree to”?

Summary:
Y/N L/N is a sports journalist, well known for her detailed articles and for destroying an athlete's reputation in one paragraph.
Kenji Sato is a baseball player with an ego. He prides himself on being the best “living player”, despite his recent losing streak.
The two of them have an intertwined past. A past that made them despise each other. After years of banter, Ken has a proposition. A proposition that Y/N is forced to take.
Warning: I changed up the original story a bit so it might give off OC vibes

Despite you leaving for Norway today, your boss asked you to cover the championship game, with the benefit of letting you leave during the 7th inning stretch.
Instead of taking notes, you just sat and watched the game. Ken was there cheering for his team, despite the broken arm. You tried to avoid looking at Ken, but it was difficult when the jumbotron would feature him every ten minutes. To your knowledge, he hasn’t said anything about the one-night stand in college. Which was surprising, because you were ready to come clean about it all.
“Hey Y/N”?
You turn to Ami.
“Is everything all right”? She asks.
“Yeah, I’m totally fine”! You assured her.
“Really? Cause you haven’t touched your recorder”. She points to the device that is resting on the table.
“Oh, that old thing? I don’t need it”. You laughed. Ami looked at you unamused.
“Is this about Ken”? She asks. Your side eyed her slowly. “What makes you think this is about Ken”?
“Y/N”. Ami raised her eyebrow. “Every time Ken appears on the jumbotron, you look away. Also, you’ve been staring at Ken’s social media page”. She points to your phone on your lap. Your phone was on low brightness but Kenji’s X page was still visible to Ami’s eyes. You turn your phone off and put it on the table facing down.
“You are psychotic”.
“It’s just an observation”. Ami shrugs.
You continue to watch the game, mentally counting down the minutes you have until you finally get to leave.
“Have you talked to him since the interview”? Ami asks.
“No. And I don’t have a reason to”.
“Maybe you should at least see him before you leave”. She suggested
“Like I said, I don’t have a reason to talk to him. He was merely an assignment”. You lied.
As soon as the announcer announces the 7th inning stretch, you begin to pack your bags.
“And that’s my cue to leave”. You smiled as you put your bag straps on your shoulder
“Before you go, a little piece of advice”. Ami says halting you to a stop.
“You’re the youngest reporter in the business. You’ve done so much for yourself. So don’t be afraid to be spontaneous sometimes”.
You slowly nodded. “Okay then, well, it was nice working with you too Ami”. You exited the media room and then started to speed walk to the parking lot
~
Kenji’s eyes dart up at the media room and then back to the game. Every time his eyes looked into the room, his heart sank. He looks at the empty chair with sadness. You were already gone.
“SATO! EYE ON THE GAME”! Coach Shimura yells.
Sato sat up straight and watched the game, trying to not think about you.
“Dude, you okay? You’ve been out of focus since you got back”. His teammate, Ryouta, says.
“I’m fine”. Ken says, trying to watch the game.
“Really? Because your eyes keep wandering at the media box”. Ryouta presses on
“Um, Ryouta? Enough about me, more on the game”.
“If this is about the reporter chick, you should go after her”.
Ken groaned. “Ryouta, drop it. Y/N’s already gone. She’s probably on that plane right now”.
~
“UGH WHAT THE HELL”! You honked at the car in front of you. “DRIVE FASTER”! You yelled. You looked out the window and saw a line of cars ahead of yours. Of all the days the kaiju had to destroy the highway, it just had to be the day you were leaving. You slightly slide into your seat.
“Don’t be afraid to be spontaneous”. Ami echoed in your mind.
“Ugh, what is up with her and her psychic advice”? You scoff as you tap your pointer finger on the steering wheel.
The world was so persistent on guilt-tripping you today. While you were loading your luggage’s into your car, all of the billboards surrounding your apartment had Ken’s face plastered front and center with a chicken leg in his hand. During your drive to the stadium, there were posters of Ken and his signature colognes on the telephone poles. And now, as you were waiting forever in your car, a blimp flew over the highway every few minutes with a beer ad starring Ken.
“Tastes like a home run”. He would say repeatedly.
You groaned. This was a sign. A sign that you have to make things right with Kenji. You stepped on the gas pedal, driving out of the line of cars and off to the nearest exit.
~
“You know, I don’t think it’s too late to go find her and tell her how you feel. It’ll make you chivalrous”. Said Ryouta.
Kenji pinched the bridge of his nose. “Ryouta. Game. Focus”.
“I know, I know, but I just think, you shouldn’t go in with life without any regrets. Life is too short, and I think she would like it if she reached out”.
Kenji turns to Ryouta. ready to yell at him. But for some reason, he was right. The least Kenji could do is head to the airport and apologize to you in person. But he was stuck here, afraid that one wrong move could piss off his coach.
The crowd cheers as another player from the Giants steps up to the plate, ready to hit the ball. Kenji looks at his watch and then at the sight of the game.
“Go, I’ll cover you”. Ryouta whispers in Ken’s ear.
“Thank you, Ryouta”. Ken pats his shoulder and runs out of the box unnoticed.
~
You quickly got out of your car and ran off, not caring if it was locked or not. You ran towards the stadium in hopes that you could catch Ken. You hear the crowds roar as you almost reach the entrance. A small round object launched into the sky, falling out of the dome. You didn’t pay attention to it and focused on the entrance.
“Y/N”! Someone yelled.
But before you could turn your head, everything went pitch black.
~
“Y/N”?
You open your eyes and a bright light blinds you. Someone helped you sit up and put an ice pack on your head.
“Y/N, are you okay”? You turn to see three Ken Satos looking down at you.
“Ken? I thought you were an only child”.
He chuckles, “It’s probably the concussion talking”.
Eventually, your eyes started to adjust to reality, but the pounding headache was still lingering.
“What happened”?
“You got hit by a baseball. Again. I found you unconscious by the stadium entrance”.
“Oh, so that’s what it was”.
“On the bright side, it wasn’t me who knocked you out this time”. He laughs.
You try to laugh, but the pain in your head begins to throb. Ken adjusts the ice pack on your head.
“So, did you guys”…
Ken shows the championship ring on his ring finger. You smile. “Congrats”.
“Thanks”.
“What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be celebrating with your team”?
“I wanted to see if you were okay and to apologize for everything, for what happened during college, what I said last month, and for blackmailing you. I was completely selfish. You have every right to be mad at me”.
“I’m not really mad at you. For one thing, I should be apologizing to you too. For what happened in college. I was so focused on my career that I wasn’t being self-aware, and ended up hurting your feelings. I wasn’t using you for any story. But it didn’t look that way when I left that morning. I’m sorry ”.
Kenji smiles. “I guess everything was built by a few misunderstandings”.
“Yeah, it was. I’m glad we got to sort it out”.
You look up at the clock on the wall.
8:51 PM
“Great, I missed my flight. And considering I just ended my lease on my apartment, looks like I have to go hotel hunting”.
“Or, you can stay with me for the night”. Ken suggested.
“Are you sure, I don’t want to intrude”-
“I want you to. As a way to make up for everything. Also, Emi really misses you”.
~
You walk into Kenji’s house and the feeling of peace returns to you. The first thing you do when entering the home is head to the basement to see Emi. As soon as you step out of the elevator, Emi immediately runs up to you, chirping gleefully and jumping up and down with joy.
“I told you, she’s Y/N deprived”.
You laugh. “Well, I missed you too Emi”.
For the rest of the night you both played with Emi until she got tired. After putting her in the tube, you both settled down on the couch. You were trying to find flights for tomorrow, while Ken was trying to find his energy drink in the cooler.
“Thanks for letting me stay. Despite everything”. You said as you turned off your phone.
Kenji grabs his drink and cracks it open “It’s no problem. Like I said, I wanted to make it up to you”. He gives you a soft smile before drinking from the can.
“So, did you find another flight”? He asks.
“Yep, leaves tomorrow afternoon”.
“That’s great”.
You raise an eyebrow. “You aren’t going to try to stop me”?
“Nah, I don’t want to get in the way again”. He says.
You were both sitting in silence, watching Emi intently while Mina sang her a lullaby.
“Although”… He adds
You turn to Kenji. He takes your hands and holds them gently.
“I don’t want to go the rest of my life without telling you how much you mean to me. You’re more than just Emi’s babysitter. You’re everything that I want. For the last two months, I never felt so alone whenever I’m with you. You make me want to become the best version of myself and become a better person. I know I can’t make you stay, but I want you to know that I love you”.
~
That night, you were lying in your bed, staring at the ceiling. You were thinking about Kenji’s confession. About how you were about to respond, but he ran out to do “Ultraman business”, knowing all too well that he can’t fight with a broken arm. But you knew deep down, he was scared. Scared that he was going to repeat the same mistakes, scared that you were going to laugh at him.
You hear a buzz coming from your phone and you turn it on.
UNITED AIRLINES
FLIGHT FROM TOKYO TO OSLO
Boarding Time: 1:05
Flight Time: 1:45 PM
CHECK-IN NOW
Your stomach turns as you look at it. Instead of being excited, you lay there with an ultimatum. Kenji or your job. Your job made you happy. You achieved more promotions and accomplishments than any other reporter. You were traveling the world, and you were getting so much praise from everyone. While you were happy, deep down you weren’t satisfied. On the other hand, being with Kenji brought you peace. Sure you two didn’t get along at first, but as time passed by, you were comfortable around him. You haven’t felt any comfort since you started your current job. You’re scared to think about what life would be like if you left Japan already. How upsetting it would be if you left Kenji behind without telling him…
You love him too.
Your cheeks heat up, and you feel your heart beating faster.
You love Kenji.
The billboards, Ami’s advice, and the baseball incident led you back to Kenji. And this time, the world was giving you a second chance.
So with your impulses ready to take the risk, you begin to text your boss.
~
The next morning, you wake up to the smell of something burning. You got up and ran out of your room. When you get to the kitchen, you see Kenji putting down a plate of food on the table.
“Hey, you’re awake”! He smiles. “Breakfast is almost ready”!
You look down at the plate of food. The toast was almost burnt to a crisp. The bacon looks too oily and ready to turn into ash. As for the eggs, it looks completely overcooked and a little black.
“I know it looks unappetizing, but if you put a lot of ketchup on the eggs, it’ll mask the ashy taste”. Kenji says earnestly.
“You made this for me”? You look back at Kenji.
“Well yeah. You made dinner for me multiple times, so I thought I would do something for you too. Also, you have a flight today so I just wanted to make sure you eat well and”-
Before Kenji could finish his thought, you walked up to him and locked your lips onto his. Kenji stands there in shock, but eventually returns the kiss, holding you close with his arm. He held you tightly not wanting to let you go. You pull away to catch your breath, Kenji puts his forehead onto yours, his breath shaky.
“I canceled my flight”. You say, finally speaking up.
His eyes widened. “What? What about Norway”?
“I told my boss that I want to continue working in Japan. He was more than understanding. So he extended my residency here. Meaning, I’m staying”.
“But why Y/N? What about your dreams”?
“Norway can wait. I am still young after all. Plus I don’t want to go on with the rest of my life without telling you… I love you too, Kenji”.
Kenji smiles and kisses you again.
“I love you Y/N. I promise to never take you for granted, and to make every minute of every day worth”-
Suddenly, you both hear a high pitch alarm go off and see a visible trail of black clouds coming from the oven. Kenji’s happy face turned into horror as he ran towards the oven.
“NO NO NO NOT THE HASH BROWNS”.
You tried to stifle your laughter as he tried to grab the tray from the oven with one hand. You grabbed an oven mitt and helped him take it out, the smell of burnt potatoes hitting your nose. Kenji throws the burnt potato patties in the trash can. He sighs as he grabs his phone from his pocket
“How about we take out”.

BONUS SCENE (cause I love my patient pookies)
“So what’s gonna happen now that you’re staying in Japan”? Kenji asks as he takes a bite of his ham and cheese omelette.
“Well, I get to obsess over one of the greatest living players in history”. You responded as you finished your bacon strip.
Kenji sits up tall with a toothy grin.
“I mean, Ohtani is so amazing. I mean, his batting average is perfect”. You dreamily sigh. Ken pouts at you, making you laugh.
“Aww you jealous”?
“Pft, no”. He crosses his arms and huffs.
You put your to go box down on the coffee table and scoot closer to Kenji.
“Awww it’s okay”. You cooed while slightly pinching Kenji’s cheeks. “You’re still the second greatest player of all time”.
Suddenly, Kenji throws his to go box on the table and tackles you down on the couch. You screamed as Kenji begins to tickle you.
“Hey, you’re arm”! You breathed out while you point at his sling.
“Eh, it’s almost healed anyway”. He shrugs, continuing his assault.
“Stop”! You laugh.
“Say it”!
“Okay, okay”! You breathed out. “You, Kenji Sato, is the greatest living baseball player”.
“Better than Ohtani”?
“Better than Ohtani”.
“Yes”! He hugs you tightly as you both fell back on the couch.
“I’m glad you’re staying with me”. Kenji whispers and kisses your forehead. You cuddle closer to him, hearing his steady breathing and relaxed heart beat.
“I’m glad I get to stay with you”.

Hello, how are you? I saw your fic where reader and Kenji are siblings but they have a 2 years gap. Can you do 1 where reader is like 10-13 yo? So basically she's like Ken's really young baby sister. Thanks! It's absolutely ok if no :)
Sato Sibling Headcanons II
"I'm just trying to protect you"
In this scenario, you are 13/14
⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺˚•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙˚⁺‧͙⁺
╰► Remember when I said Kenji is very protective?
╰► Yea it still stands
╰► He became your guardian after y’all’s mother disappeared
╰► It took a toll on your mental health. losing a family member is hard. and considering y’all’s relationship with your dad, you don’t really have anyone else aside from Kenji and Mina
╰► As the older brother/guardian, he wanted to protect you and your feelings from the world
╰► Like that’s his baby sister, if you hurt her, physically or emotionally, he’ll be planning your demise
╰► Because you’re not old enough to live by yourself, you had to go with Kenji back to Japan
╰► After you were born, Emiko took you and Kenji to the United States, so you don’t really know anything about Japanese culture, or have any memories of Japan.
╰► Kenji helped you adjust to Japan. He took you to all of the non-touristy places. And with the help of Mina, he helped you with your Japanese so you can talk to your classmates easily.
╰► He’s also one of those brothers who acts like the parent. I mean it comes with the job of course
╰► Even though it’s a different city, it’s still dangerous. especially with all the kaiju running around
╰► He makes your safety his #1 priority
╰► This means 9:00 pm curfew, life 360, trackers, everything
╰► But while Kenji is either at his games or he’s running around at night as Ultraman, you take this as an opportunity to sneak out at night ;)
╰► When y’all’s dad found out you were here, Kenji made it his mission to make sure your dad doesn’t get to interact with you
╰► Like Kenji knows it’s bad to keep you away from getting to know your dad, but knowing how emotionally unavailable he was during Kenji’s youth, he doesn’t want you to get hurt
╰► Which leads to arguments with Kenji
╰► “I’m not five Kenji! When will you learn that I’m not some fragile flower”
╰► “You don’t understand Y/N, he’s not a good father. I’m just trying to protect you from getting hurt again”
╰► “Y’know, just because you have daddy issues, doesn’t mean you have to drag me along with you. ”
╰► 😳… dang girl
╰► After a few days of silent treatment, Kenji finally apologized and arranged a day for a family day for the three of you
╰► Kenji is still grasping that you’re not as fragile as he thought you were
╰► You’re proving to him every day that you’re a very strong person
╰► Reminds him and your dad of someone they know
╰► But don’t think that Kenji is letting his guard down. He’s still your brother after all.

He says.
“Aspiring journalist gets knocked out the famed Kenji Sato”.
You laughed. “As much as that would make a really great story, nobody at that the Daily Bugle takes me seriously”. You sighed, playing with the straw inside your cup.
“How come”? He raised his eye brow.
“According to him, and to all the men at the daily bugle, “leave the sports to the men”. You deepen your voice to imitate the editor.
“Thank you. So, any plans after this”?
“Well”… You began to think. “I was thinking about heading back to my dorm, curl up in bed and watch TV”.
“Damn, I was planning on asking you if you wanted to come back to my place, but if it’s that important to you, then who am I to stop you”. He began to walk away.
“Well, that also doesn’t sound like a bad idea. But shouldn’t you be with your team, celebrating”? You gestured to the group of men screaming like chimpanzees.
“I don’t usually go out with the team. Win or not”. He shrugged.
“Wow, didn’t take you as an introvert”. You poked at his arm.
“Are you coming or not”? He turns to you.
~
You were at the kitchen, fixing him a grilled cheese and popping a bottle of wine as a reward for Kenji.
When you were about to knock, you noticed the door was open.
I just took her out for pizza one time and she still thinks I’m taking her seriously”. He laughs.
You stood there dumbfounded. The whole time you were with Kenji was just so he increase his body count?
You left the apartment building once again.
