Tesla's Dieselgate

Elon Musk lies a lot. He lies about being a “utopian socialist.” He lies about being a “free speech absolutist.” He lies about which companies he founded:

The fundamental laws of physics don’t care about this bullshit, but people do. The comsat lie convinced a bunch of people that pulling fiber to all our homes is literally impossible — as though the electrical and phone lines that come to our homes now were installed by an ancient, lost civilization. Pulling new cabling isn’t a mysterious art, like embalming pharaohs. We do it all the time. One of the poorest places in America installed universal fiber with a mule named “Ole Bub”:

But while Musk lacks the charm of earlier Silicon Valley grifters, he’s much better than they ever were at running a long con. For years, he’s been promising “full self driving…next year.”

He’s hasn’t delivered, but he keeps claiming he has, making Teslas some of the deadliest cars on the road:

Tesla is a giant shell-game masquerading as a car company. The important thing about Tesla isn’t its cars, it’s Tesla’s business arrangement, the Tesla-Financial Complex:

Once you start unpacking Tesla’s balance sheets, you start to realize how much the company depends on government subsidies and tax-breaks, combined with selling carbon credits that make huge, planet-destroying SUVs possible, under the pretense that this is somehow good for the environment:

But even with all those financial shenanigans, Tesla’s got an absurdly high valuation, soaring at times to 1600x its profitability:

That valuation represents a bet on Tesla’s ability to extract ever-higher rents from its customers. Take Tesla’s batteries: you pay for the battery when you buy your car, but you don’t own that battery. You have to rent the right to use its full capacity, with Tesla reserving the right to reduce how far you go on a charge based on your willingness to pay:

That’s just one of the many rent-a-features that Tesla drivers have to shell out for. You don’t own your car at all: when you sell it as a used vehicle, Tesla strips out these features you paid for and makes the next driver pay again, reducing the value of your used car and transfering it to Tesla’s shareholders:

To maintain this rent-extraction racket, Tesla uses DRM that makes it a felony to alter your own car’s software without Tesla’s permission. This is the root of all autoenshittification:

This is technofeudalism. Whereas capitalists seek profits (income from selling things), feudalists seek rents (income from owning the things other people use). If Telsa were a capitalist enterprise, then entrepreneurs could enter the market and sell mods that let you unlock the functionality in your own car:

But because Tesla is a feudal enterprise, capitalists must first secure permission from the fief, Elon Musk, who decides which companies are allowed to compete with him, and how.

Once a company owns the right to decide which software you can run, there’s no limit to the ways it can extract rent from you. Blocking you from changing your device’s software lets a company run overt scams on you. For example, they can block you from getting your car independently repaired with third-party parts.

But they can also screw you in sneaky ways. Once a device has DRM on it, Section 1201 of the DMCA makes it a felony to bypass that DRM, even for legitimate purposes. That means that your DRM-locked device can spy on you, and because no one is allowed to explore how that surveillance works, the manufacturer can be incredibly sloppy with all the personal info they gather:

All kinds of hidden anti-features can lurk in your DRM-locked car, protected from discovery, analysis and criticism by the illegality of bypassing the DRM. For example, Teslas have a hidden feature that lets them lock out their owners and summon a repo man to drive them away if you have a dispute about a late payment:

DRM is a gun on the mantlepiece in Act I, and by Act III, it goes off, revealing some kind of ugly and often dangerous scam. Remember Dieselgate? Volkswagen created a line of demon-haunted cars: if they thought they were being scrutinized (by regulators measuring their emissions), they switched into a mode that traded performance for low emissions. But when they believed themselves to be unobserved, they reversed this, emitting deadly levels of NOX but delivering superior mileage.

The conversion of the VW diesel fleet into mobile gas-chambers wouldn’t have been possible without DRM. DRM adds a layer of serious criminal jeopardy to anyone attempting to reverse-engineer and study any device, from a phone to a car. DRM let Apple claim to be a champion of its users’ privacy even as it spied on them from asshole to appetite:

Now, Tesla is having its own Dieselgate scandal. A stunning investigation by Steve Stecklow and Norihiko Shirouzu for Reuters reveals how Tesla was able to create its own demon-haunted car, which systematically deceived drivers about its driving range, and the increasingly desperate measures the company turned to as customers discovered the ruse:

The root of the deception is very simple: Tesla mis-sells its cars by falsely claiming ranges that those cars can’t attain. Every person who ever bought a Tesla was defrauded.

But this fraud would be easy to detect. If you bought a Tesla rated for 353 miles on a charge, but the dashboard range predictor told you that your fully charged car could only go 150 miles, you’d immediately figure something was up. So your Telsa tells another lie: the range predictor tells you that you can go 353 miles.

But again, if the car continued to tell you it has 203 miles of range when it was about to run out of charge, you’d figure something was up pretty quick — like, the first time your car ran out of battery while the dashboard cheerily informed you that you had 203 miles of range left.

So Teslas tell a third lie: when the battery charge reached about 50%, the fake range is replaced with the real one. That way, drivers aren’t getting mass-stranded by the roadside, and the scam can continue.

But there’s a new problem: drivers whose cars are rated for 353 miles but can’t go anything like that far on a full charge naturally assume that something is wrong with their cars, so they start calling Tesla service and asking to have the car checked over.

This creates a problem for Tesla: those service calls can cost the company $1,000, and of course, there’s nothing wrong with the car. It’s performing exactly as designed. So Tesla created its boldest fraud yet: a boiler-room full of anti-salespeople charged with convincing people that their cars weren’t broken.

This new unit — the “diversion team” — was headquartered in a Nevada satellite office, which was equipped with a metal xylophone that would be rung in triumph every time a Tesla owner was successfully conned into thinking that their car wasn’t defrauding them.

When a Tesla owner called this boiler room, the diverter would run remote diagnostics on their car, then pronounce it fine, and chide the driver for having energy-hungry driving habits (shades of Steve Jobs’s “You’re holding it wrong”):

The drivers who called the Diversion Team weren’t just lied to, they were also punished. The Tesla app was silently altered so that anyone who filed a complaint about their car’s range was no longer able to book a service appointment for any reason. If their car malfunctioned, they’d have to request a callback, which could take several days.

Meanwhile, the diverters on the diversion team were instructed not to inform drivers if the remote diagnostics they performed detected any other defects in the cars.

The diversion team had a 750 complaint/week quota: to juke this stat, diverters would close the case for any driver who failed to answer the phone when they were eventually called back. The center received 2,000+ calls every week. Diverters were ordered to keep calls to five minutes or less.

Eventually, diverters were ordered to cease performing any remote diagnostics on drivers’ cars: a source told Reuters that “Thousands of customers were told there is nothing wrong with their car” without any diagnostics being performed.

Predicting EV range is an inexact science as many factors can affect battery life, notably whether a journey is uphill or downhill. Every EV automaker has to come up with a figure that represents some kind of best guess under a mix of conditions. But while other manufacturers err on the side of caution, Tesla has the most inaccurate mileage estimates in the industry, double the industry average.

Other countries’ regulators have taken note. In Korea, Tesla was fined millions and Elon Musk was personally required to state that he had deceived Tesla buyers. The Korean regulator found that the true range of Teslas under normal winter conditions was less than half of the claimed range.

Now, many companies have been run by malignant narcissists who lied compulsively — think of Thomas Edison, archnemesis of Nikola Tesla himself. The difference here isn’t merely that Musk is a deeply unfit monster of a human being — but rather, that DRM allows him to defraud his customers behind a state-enforced opaque veil. The digital computers at the heart of a Tesla aren’t just demons haunting the car, changing its performance based on whether it believes it is being observed — they also allow Musk to invoke the power of the US government to felonize anyone who tries to peer into the black box where he commits his frauds.

The Pitt Timeline

This timeline of The Pitt will be updated with new information as people will hopefully correct me and add to this! Notes explaining general calculations (confirming season 1 is set in 2025, the birth year of characters, the general timeline I used for medical school to emergency medicine residency) are beneath the cut.

Date - Event

1948 - Montgomery Adamson is born (S1E01, plaque on memorial wall).

1982/1983* - Cassie McKay is born (S1E01, “42-year-old R2”).

1992/1993 - Dana Evans begins working at the Emergency Department at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC) (S1E08, “32 years”).

1995/1996 - Samira Mohan is born (on Twitter, Supriya Ganesh says the writers and her decided Mohan is 29 in season 1 [link]).

October/November 1998 - Trinity Santos is born (S1E06, she tells Yolanda Garcia her star sign is Scorpio; the first draft of the script for the first episode [link] says she is 26, so if the season is set in September, her birthday has not passed yet).

2004/2005 - Victoria Javadi is born (S1E01, “I’m 20”).

By August 2005 - Michael Robinavitch completed his residency program at Big Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana (S1E09). While the timeline between then and his arrival at PTMC is unclear, the hospital closed following Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. Therefore, Robinavitch would have left the hospital in 2005 at the latest.

2007/2008 - Jake Malloy, Robinavitch’s stepson, is born (S1E05, “I’m 17”).

2008/2009 - Mohan’s dad dies when she is 13 (S1E05).

2013/2014 - Harrison Ashcroft, McKay’s son, is born (S1E02, “he’s 11 now”).

March/April 2016 - McKay gets sober (S1E05, “9 years, 5 months, and 11 days”).

2017/2018 - Javadi attends college and later medical school at the University of Pittsburgh (S1E10, “go to college at 13”).

2020/2021 - Tanner Langdon, Frank Langdon’s son, is born (S1E02, “four-year-old”).

Before September 2020 - In a flashback set in 2020 when Adamson’s health was declining because of COVID-19, Mohan is pictured in a photo at his bedside (S1E07, Robinavitch and Perlah Alawi are also pictured). This may be an error in using a picture of the cast, but if accurate, this implies Mohan attended medical school in Pittsburgh. At the latest that this photo could have been taken (at PTMC in early 2020), Mohan would have been in her first year of medical school.

September 2020 - Adamson dies during the COVID-19 pandemic after 17 days on ECMO.

July 2021 - John Shen begins his first year of the emergency medicine residency program at PTMC** (S1E12, “still a resident three months ago”).

July 2022 - Heather Collins, Langdon, and Parker Ellis begin their first year of residency.

July 2023 - Mohan begins her first year of residency.

July 2024 - McKay begins her first year of residency.

July 2025 - Shen becomes an attending physician in emergency medicine. Collins, Langdon, and Ellis begin their fourth year of residency. Mohan begins her third year of residency. McKay begins her second year of residency.

August 2025 - Dennis Whitaker does an internal medicine rotation in PTMC (S1E15). He is in his fourth year of medical school. Javadi is in her third year of medical school at the University of Pittsburgh*** (S1E01).

September 2025 - This is when season 1 takes place (S1E06, Shelby Adamson’s thank you note says “five short years ago” was Adamson’s death, which occurred in 2020). Melissa King begins her second year of residency after two months at a Veterans Affairs hospital (S1E01). Santos begins her internship at PTMC (S1E01).

July 2026 - Season 2 is set on the Fourth of July weekend, ten months after season 1.

Season 1 takes place over the course of fifteen hours of the same day. It occurs on an odd day (S1E02), a Friday (S1E15), and in September (S1E12, break room calendar; season 2 is set 10 months ahead in July). I think this places the date of season 1 as September 5th or September 19th. For the purposes of this timeline, season one is treated as occurring in September 2025. The evidence is as follows:

On YouTube, there is a trailer titled “The Pitt | Official Trailer | Max” (link) with a deleted scene where Collins says to Robby that Adamson’s death was “five years ago today”. We know the death occurred in 2020, so that makes it 2025.

In episode 6, when Shelby Adamson, Adamson’s sister, sends a thank you note to the ER staff, her letter also says it has been five years. A transcription of the note: “To the ER Staff of PTMC, As my brother would have done, I think of you all today. Sending this as a token of thanks for all that you do and all that you did for Monty, five short years ago. With love, Shelby Adamson”

Then, we have that patient in episode 10 who gets hit in the eye playing baseball. He says he is 16 and he was born on December 7th, 2008. This would only make it 2024 if it were December, but it is not.

Finally, Noah Wyle said at the FYC panel recently that season 2 is intended to be set on the Fourth of July weekend, on the 250th anniversary of the US, which makes it July 2026.

*When given the age of a character, I give two possible years the character was born to accommodate for the fact that their birthday may not have passed yet. So, for example, Cassie McKay says she is 42. If we treat season one as being set in September 2025, she is at the latest born in September 1983 if her birthday just passed and she just turned 42. However, it may be the case that her birthday has not passed in the calendar year yet (like Santos, who is a Scorpio and therefore has a birthday sometime in late October to mid-November). This means she can at the earliest be born in September 1982 (say, late September), and turn 43 shortly after the events of season one. I use similar logic for events that happen at a certain age (Mohan’s dad’s death when she was 13 - she could have just turned 13 or turned 14 later that year; same with Javadi and the year she began attending college).

**Here is the general information that I used to make the timeline for medical training. (Information concerning the American medical school system is compiled from cursory Google searches and browsing sources such as the National Resident Matching Program [NRMP] and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education [ACGME]. Please be advised that there may be errors and variations may exist. I am not in the medical field, so do correct me!) Following the completion of medical school, new doctors generally begin their residency programs on July 1. The emergency medicine residency program at Pittsburgh Medical Trauma Center is a four-year program (S1E04): R1 (interns), R2, R3, and R4. I am assuming all of the attendings and residents who we know did/are doing their residencies at PTMC immediately matched after four years of medical school and began their residencies in the emergency department in the July following graduation unless otherwise stated.

***In real life, I only found one medical school in Pittsburgh (the other school in the area confers D.O.), the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (Javadi says she attends Pitt in S1E10). Does Whitaker also attend Pitt? I guess we don’t know if there is another made-up medical school in Pittsburgh until season 2?

This is two and a half Calendar years prior, meaning it is roughly in March. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [2] Interestingly, this is a JP note. In Episode 6, Chapter 5, the English has Moby mention that the Gala is at the end of August, when the fourth years return. The Japanese script has Moby saying that the fourth years return when it becomes August to prepare for graduation, and that at the end of that month, the Gala takes place. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [3] Given the fact that the other known entrance ceremonies both take place in September, it is an educated guess that this is the case for the second years as well. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [4] Episode 15, Chapter 25 has Haku mention that he was in Frostheim for a year before transferring to Hotarubi. In Chapter 2, Rui says Haku transferred suddenly after becoming a 2nd year (in the JP text), meaning that it was most likely September when Haku transferred to Frostheim. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [5] Episode 7, Chapter 26 says the immortal inpatient was cursed during a mission 'last year', though whether that is last school year or last calendar year is unclear. If it was last school year, there is still a chance he was cursed in 2023 (if it happened early on in the year). The implication is that he was cursed prior to March 2024, due to Nicolas saying Yuri wouldn't recognise him nor would Jiro. March-April, 2024 is roughly when multiple events related to the Clash occurred, including transfers, so it is likely that it happened before this point, as it would prevent him and Yuri from meeting. As for Jiro, we don't actually know when he was woken from his coma, so… shrugs. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [6] This one is kinda a doozy. Multiple moving parts place the prologue in 2024. To begin, in Episode 15, Chapter 27, there is a Suspicious Person Report filed on July 10th, 2021. In a subsequent chapter, Chapter 29, Haku discusses the disappearance of Yu Kunishige, who vanished five years ago. Following this disappearance, her father kills himself a year later, and becomes the Unknown Caller anomaly. He is a newer anomaly (also mentioned in Ch27) compared to the other ghosts. Assuming the Unknown Caller is already an anomaly (given that he knows Hanao Numata and was not asking about Yu, as reports said he would do when he was alive), this means Yu vanished no later than 2020. And, if Yu vanished in 2020, and her father killed himself in 2021, that would place Episode 15 in 2025, given that Chapter 5 has Zenji mention it is almost blossom season (Blossom season occurred in Late March) and MC explicitly say it is March. This matches up with Episode 14 taking place in February, and Episode 13 taking place in December.

Furthermore, in Episode 16, Chapter 11, Ritsu mentions it has been 266 days since Sinostra was placed on Probation, which would place that chapter in May. It can't be 2024 at the time of that statement because it was a leap year, and it would mean his count is off by one. It can't be earlier either, because of the aforementioned Yu Kunishige issue. That issue is also why it can't be set in the future; if it is 2026, for example, Yu disappeared in 2021, and her father would be looking for her when the report is filed. Similarly, if it was 2027, there would be no report to file, as Yu would not have disappeared at the time of its filing. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [7] Considering how many Clash related events take place in March or April (which is halfway through the school year), it is unfathomable that it wouldn't take place in 2024. Could it hypothetically take place in 2023? I guess so. But there's no reason for there to be a minimum 3 month gap between major events. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [8] MC speculates in Episode 5, Chapter 31 that Zenji's death happened during the Clash. Haku also states that he died during the 'thick of [all the problems last year]', so it was Likely around the Clash era. Zenji also didn't know the gala was cancelled, as that happened after he died. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [9] In Episode 3, Chapter 11, Haru mentions it took him six months to learn Jabberwock's ropes, and later on in Episode 16, Chapter 8 that Haru transferred suddenly, so it was likely in the middle of last school year. However, horrifically, while the English says it took 6 months for him to learn the ropes, the word he uses in Japanese is 半月; half a month. Further investigation into Kansai-ben shows no special other meaning, so... Um. Yeah. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [10] Episode 2, Chapter 26 Leo mentions that Tohma was in Vagastrom until the middle of last school year, which would put it Vaguely In March. This more or less aligns with the Clash. In Episode 1, Chapter 1, Yumiko and another Frostheim student gossip briefly, and mention that people believe Tohma had something to do with Yuri's transfer. I placed them roughly around the same time therefore, but it is totally possible Yuri's transfer happened Earlier or Later.

[11] In Episode 4, Chapter 10 Ritsu says Taiga became Captain approximately half a year ago. Given that it is October, six months earlier would be April, though as always it could be March that he transfers, given the sheer amount of Clash-specific issues that happen around this time. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [12] Episode 9, Chapter 5 has Kaito reveal that Romeo has been hunting him for half a year at the time of saying that. Once again, given that it is November, and given that the Casino opens roughly around April, and given that Kaito also mentions he didn't see Romeo prior to this, it would make sense that this starts around May. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [13] Once again, Episode 15, Chapter 25 has Haku say he was in Frostheim for a full year before transferring again. Since he is in Hotarubi and seemingly well adapted to it by the beginning of the story, he likely transferred sometime in July or August. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [14] Multiple mentions to when Dionysia became defunct occur, namely Episode 5, Chapter 2 (where it is mentioned they closed last school year) and Episode 16, Chapter 5 (where it is reiterated that Dionysia became defunct at the end of last school year). In the English script, Elias mentions in Ep16 Chapter 7 that Dionysia has been Abandoned for six months, however the JP says that it went defunct Over six months ago, meaning it is still reiterating that Dionysia has been out of commission for quite some time. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [15] Another assumption that this is a yearly event that always reoccurs at the same time every year. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [16] In the Prologue, Chapter 1 it is 7:13pm when MC is on the train coming back (based on timestamps from her group chat). However, in Chapter 3 (and reiterated again in Chapter 4), it is suddenly daytime after MC is cursed. When it is daytime, it is known to be September 4th, and morning based on how much happens during the Prologue in one day, meaning it is likely MC was cursed on September 3rd, and Kisaragi Station OR Kyklos caused time discrepancies.

Another more unhinged reason is that the prophecy says the Whisper of the New Moon would lead the Champion to the isle. In 2024 in Tokyo, the new moon for September occurred September 3rd, roughly around 11pm. Does this moon chart line up with anything else? No, basically just this. However it's a neat coincidence regardless. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [17] In Episode 4, Chapter 21, Kaito says he bet September 5th of that year to the Oblivion Dealer. Later in Chapter 29, he says it was the day after the entrance ceremony, meaning that the entrance ceremony took place September 4th. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [18] Not only does the dates line up with the days that pass throughout the chapters, MC also has the option to bet September 8th of that year in Episode 4, Chapter 24, which is mentioned as the Celebratory Ball in Frostheim. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [19] Once again, Episode 4, Chapter 24 allows MC to wager September 19th, noting it was the Vagastrom undercover investigation where they first used the Fox Robe. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [20] Once again, Episode 4 Chapter 24. MC wagers October 1st, noting it is when she meets Jabberwock.

[21] In Episode 6, Chapter 34 Edward says it's the full moon that night, which is important for the purpose of reiterating the moon thing is likely a coincidence, given that the full moon for October when this chapter occurs is October 17th, which is genuinely impossible for Obscuary to reach, given that this is the fourth day for Obscuary's investigation, and there's a minimum 3 days timeskip between the end of Hotarubi, which is already a week, and Sinostra ends October 10th. Womp womp. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [22] Interestingly enough, in Episode 5, Chapter 9 Moby mentions needing money by the 25th of the month to pay for a ticket to an exclusive stream, which lead me to believe this is when it takes place. However, the Japanese script says he needs it by the 25th of next month. So shrugs. It's not super important, just strange. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [23] Episode 7, Chapter 7 ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [24] Beyond other dates firmly placing the Episode 8 in November, Ritsu mentions in Episode 16, Chapter 23 that the auction took place in November (in the Japanese script, at least). ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [25] Episode 14, Chapter 27 says that the gap between the Director contracting Oui, C'est Bon and his trip to France was 2 months, meaning it is roughly December when they go. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [26] Episode 13, Chapter 1 has a student mention how it is almost time for the Christmas Ball, meaning it's not yet Christmas, and therefore still December. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [27] In Episode 14, Chapter 7, Kaito says he was hoping to get slightly late Valentines Day sweets from MC, meaning it is somewhere around mid-February. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [28] Episode 15, Chapter 5 ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ [29] Episode 16, Chapter 11, Ritsu says it has been 266 days since Sinostra was placed on probation, meaning it is May 28th as of that statement. "Wear it and stay healthy," a comic about masking in solidarity with Palestinians. I made it for Steel Transplant's digital release COVID CAUTIOUS QUEERS ZINE 2 ($0+).

It's a collage of transparent printed text from news/science articles, magazine scraps, and marker drawings of posts Muhammad Smiry & Omar Hamad made from Palestine in 2024. The title is a quote from Hala, a Palestinian girl who sold masks in Gaza until she was killed by Israel last June.

Omar's words make up most of this comic - he is a poet, writer, and a tailor for Gaza's children with his Needle of Hope project, and also has a family survival fund. Support him, Muhammad, Care for Gaza, and all Palestinians in every way you can, and MASK UP against all genocides.

Plain language summary Some children and young people infected with SARS-COV-2 experience impairing symptoms long after infection; this is known as ‘Long COVID’. We used data from the Long COVID in Children and Young People (CloCk) study to describe symptoms and how much they impact children and young people’s lives 24-months post-infection. We found that 7.2% of children and young people consistently meet the ‘Long COVID’ research definition at 3-, 6-, 12- and 24-months post-infection. These children and young people reported around 5-to-6 symptoms at each time-point. Reinfected children and young people had more symptoms than children and young people who report one infection; those who report no infection had the lowest symptom burden. When researching Long COVID, we need to consider clinical impairment and the range of symptoms reported.

Abstract Background Some children and young people (CYP) infected with SARS-COV-2 experience impairing symptoms post-infection, known as post-COVID-19 condition (PCC). Using data from the National Long COVID in Children and Young People (CloCk) study, we report symptoms and their impact up to 24-months post-infection.

Methods CloCk is a cohort of CYP in England aged 11-to-17-years when they had a SARS-CoV-2 PCR-test (between September 2020 and March 2021). Of 31,012 eligible CYP 24-months post-PCR test, 12,632 participated (response = 40.7%). CYP were grouped by infection status: ‘initial test-negatives; no subsequent positive-test’ (NN); ‘initial test-negatives; subsequent positive-test’ (NP); ‘initial test-positives; no reported re-infection’ (PN); and ‘initial test-positives; reported re-infection’ (PP). The Delphi research definition of PCC in CYP was operationalised; symptom severity/impact and validated scales (e.g., Chalder Fatigue Scale) were recorded. We examine symptom profiles 24-month post-index-test by infection status.

Results 7.2% of CYP consistently fulfil the PCC definition at 3-, 6-, 12- and 24-months. These CYPs have a median of 5-to-6 symptoms at each time-point. Between 20% and 25% of all infection status groups report 3+ symptoms 24-months post-testing; 10–25% experience 5+ symptoms. The reinfected group has more symptoms than the other positive groups; the NN group has the lowest symptom burden (p < 0.001). PCC is more common in older CYPs and in the most deprived. Symptom severity/impact is higher in those fulfilling the PCC definition.

Conclusions The discrepancy in the proportion of CYP fulfilling the Delphi PCC definition at 24-months and those consistently fulfilling the definition across time, highlights the importance of longitudinal studies and the need to consider clinical impairment and range of symptoms.

A Personal Update

I usually only post these newsletters on substack and patreon, but because you've likely noticed I have not been active on tumblr in... well... months, really, I thought I was share it here as well.

I am going through a deeply personal shift in almost every aspect of my life, and since it has not only impacted me but my readers, my tumblr and my newsletter, I thought I would take this week to reframe for myself everything that has happened.

This year has been the second worst of my life so far (and to be frank, if it doesn’t get better, will probably end up as worst). My father was in and out of the hospital for 6 months straight with cancer treatments and near-death experiences, my previous job’s productivity standards became entirely unethical starting in Jan/Feb, and my boss slowly starting to gaslight and abuse me over it for months…

It became clear, through my neglect of my own life, my hobbies, my blog, this newsletter, and my writing itself, that I needed to change. It hit me about a month ago that I hadn’t written anything since about March. No brainstorming, no word vomit “outlines”, and I hadn’t even read anything. My reading challenge for the year is empty. I have not finished a single book since January.

The only other time I went this long without writing was, you guessed it, the worst year of my life. In 2021, I did not write from January through November, and then I exploded in writing. That’s when I finally wrote and finished a first complete draft of AVOF’s sequel.

This time, it fortunately didn’t take me 11 months to realize what was happening. About a month ago, I hit rock bottom. With my father being a full month out from any life-threatening incidences—he’s finally turning around and improving now—the effects of being in a constant state of fight or flight for 6 months combined with my job’s new 100% productivity standard just demolished me.

So, I applied for a different job. I restarted therapy with a new therapist. I put in a short notice, meaning I am now blacklisted from ever working for that company again. I’m taking a $13k pay cut, but this job offers significantly more time off, less rigorous hours, I design my own schedule, and allows me to be much closer to my parents, who are still adjusting to my dad’s new post-cancer normal. (I’ve also managed to score a much larger apartment!)

There is something poetic about this shift all happening literally a month before I begin releasing AVOF. In all the stories I have written, this is the one I always end up coming back to. When I am down, when I am alone, it is Danny and Lara and Helio that remind me I’m not.

It is this, actually, that made me realize I was in a state of burnout. Every night for five years, I have thought about Danny and Lara and Helio. I imagine scenes already written or AUs or probably-canon-but-will-never-exist scenes as I drift off to sleep.

I had not been able to do this for 6 weeks. I was so burnt out, and frankly depressed, that even my most beloved characters were lost to me. This was the final straw, the trigger that made me realize this was not something I was going to be able to move past; that I needed to get out.

In a way, they have saved me again. I thought Danny and Lara had already saved me, back in 2020-2021 which were such difficult years for me. The story has been written, completed, for years, and I thought its impact on me was over. I thought it was out of me, finished, and had become something to be shared with others.

I see now that stories can continue saving you even long after you’ve written them; even when you are no longer the same writer anymore. Funnily enough this epiphany is not dissimilar to what Danny experiences in book 2, though that’s still a long ways out from being shared with you all.

It is quite fitting that, as I realize this, as I feel closer to Danny than I have in a really long time, is when I will begin preparing his story for release.
