A short history of the vamp

Nowadays, the term 'vamp' means a woman who uses her charm or wiles to seduce and exploit men (Webster Dictionary), but where did it come from?

In 1914, an unknown actress, Theda Bara, was cast in the film 'A Fool There Was'. Bara played a woman with insatiable sexual desire who seduces a diplomat, forces him to leave his family, and then rejects him. Publicity photos showed her over her lover's skeleton, which meant that she not only drained men of their vitality, but also devoured their bodies. In one of the interviews, she called the character she played a 'vamp' (a shortened name of the vampire from Kipling's poem). Theda became the first sex symbol of the screen which attract both sexes. She stimulated fantasy in men and vanity in women. [The Century of …, J. R. Peterson, 1999]

According to Bara's biographer, Until 1915, 'vamp' was either a short sketch or a piece of music played between acts (e.g. to vamp until ready), but the word had entered the American lexicon as a term for a dangerous woman. [Vamp: The Rise and Fall of Theda Bara, E. Golden, 1996]

Since then, society has slowly rejected the Victorian ideal of women as angelic beings free from the taint of sexual desire. Scott Fitzgerald noted the evolution of the woman's role:

The 'belle' had become the 'flirt,' the 'flirt' had become the 'baby vamp'.
