So here's a little something I had mulling around in my brain for bit: The Demongoose. Based on the myths of weasels and mongooses who were considered the mortal enemies of Basilisks in folkloric tales and their real-life inspirations (cobras). (History and story below)

As Basilisk persecution reached its peak across the Boiling Isles, witches and demons alike tried to find ways to better track down and kill their quarries. Basilisks more than willing to defend themselves, draining nearly any form of magic from their enemies and being able to disguise themselves as anyone. Simple parties of demon hunters would do no good. But a terrible solution would be concocted by a hateful demon hunter by the name of Ophiobane, who would eventually become the first head of the Beast Keeping Coven many years later. Harnessing a variety of beast-keeping magic practices that would have been considered highly immoral during both the Deadwardian and post-Empire eras, he cobbled together numerous forms of beast demon into terrible hybrids and pumping them with all sorts of strange magical concoctions. Most attempts would fail, but unfortunately Ophiobane would be successful in creating his perfect "Basilisk Hunter".

The Demongoose, by virtue of being a beast demon, has no real magic for a Basilisk to consume, negating one of the serpent demon's most critical abilities. Additionally, Demongeese possessed a keen sense of smell that is specifically tuned to the type of magic Basilisks produce when keeping up their disguises. So even when a Basilisk has lost a group of demon hunters in a crowd, a Demongoose is still able to hone in on its quarry without fail.

The Demongoose was also created to endure physical combat with its serpent foes, even against the largest Greater Basilisks that can often dwarf them in size. Their body is covered in spines and quills attached to loose skin, making it difficult for a Basilisk to grab hold of its mammalian opponent. Razor sharp claws and ever-growing serrated teeth so big that they don't fit within the creature's mouth when closed were created to cut through scaly hides. Combined with a high-strung and frenzied personality, and a Demongoose can turn into a whirlwind of blades that can bring down even the largest Basilisks if they are determined enough.

But despite all their ferocity, the Demongoose itself would be a victim of its own success. In a little over a decade after their creation, all Basilisks upon the Boiling Isles had been exterminated, and with their sole purpose now redundant, the Demongoose itself was snuffed into oblivion. Considered too violent and frenetic to be considered a companion pet or used as a beast of burden, all remaining specimens of Demongoose were put down over the next few years following the death of the last Basilisk individual...

...However, following the escape of a few cloned Basilisk individuals from the Conformitorium, there have been whispers by those in the know that the Emperor had been considering the revival of their dreaded rival. It was just a rumor however, and after the failed Day of Unity and the fall of the Emperor, it would be treated as just that.

But when inspecting a defunct EC facility that had gone unnoticed until then, Darius and Eberwolf discovered an underground chamber filled with grave-vats, similar to those that the late Emperor had used to create his grim walkers and those the Emperor's Coven used to resurrect the Basilisk from extinction. A dozen or so grave-vats were found in total, each mulch-filled depression in the ground housing the half-grown remains of a Demongoose.

All except one.

One grave-vat was empty of any Demongoose remains, and was only partially filled with mulch and dirt as the rest had seemingly been flung across the room. Almost as if something had dug itself out. When further inspecting the rest of the facility, they discovered a shredded hole in one of the walls leading outside, with a set of old tracks in the dirt making their way into the wild forest...

As well as being its own post, this is also technically a lead up to future one I plan on doing about the Last Basilisk (Spoiler: They are Vee's ortet), and that required some context about the Demongeese first.
