“I just need an honest-to-goodness case,” you said, sighing. You flopped back down onto the bed you shared with Dean. “Somehow, every time we think we’ve found one, there’s, like, some other-worldly moral that can be learned from it. Just give me a ghost. I’m beggin’ the world for a ghost.”
Dean chuckled from his seat at the table and turned your laptop around to face you. “How ‘bout this one?” he asked.
You sat up and leaned forward to read the screen. “Mind Freak?” Dean chuckled. “Maybe so.”
“I’m in,” you shrugged and began tugging on your boots. “Where’s Sam?”
“Sulking somewhere, probably,” your partner replied.
****
The three of you set off for Sioux City where a new kind of entertainer was taking over: sluttier versions of Criss Angel, quite possibly. Jeb Dexter was one of them, and he performed a mock-demon-exorcism in front of an audience and a camera crew.
“I can't believe people actually fall for that crap,” Dean snorted as you walked away from Jeb.
“It's not all crap,” Sam replied.
Dean rolled his eyes. “What part of that was not a steaming pile of bullshit?”
“Okay, that was crap,” the younger brother admitted, “but that's not all magicians. It takes skill.”
“Oh, right, right, I forgot. You were actually into this stuff, weren't you?” Dean taunted. “I mean, you had, you had, like a deck of cards and a wand.”
“Dude, I was thirteen. It was a phase.”
“Aw, Sam,” you cooed. “That’s adorable.”
“Shut up,” he mumbled jokingly, clearly embarrassed.
“Just… it bugs me,” Dean continued. “Y’know, playing at demons and— and magic, when the real thing will kill you bloody.”
“Like a guy who drops dead of ten stab wounds with no holes in his shirt?” you chimed in, referring to the case you were here to work. It seemed like it’d be a simple witch hunt.
Dean nodded. “That's what I'm talking about.”
****
You spoke to the assistant of the young magician you’d died, and he revealed he’d found a tarot card depicting the ten of swords in his boss’s stuff while he was packing. You had the assistant give you the tarot card before you were on your way.
You turned it over in your hand; it was a standard Rider Waite card. You’d dabbled with the cards in as a teen while trying to escape your parents' extremist religion, and that would undoubtedly prove useful to you in this situation. “I mean, obviously,” you began as you walked up to the place where Jeb and his crew were filming: a magician’s convention. “The guy on the card got stabbed through the back. But there’s meanings to each of these cards. The swords traditionally represent trouble and problem solving. The ten of swords indicates a disaster of some sort, which…” you trailed off.
Sam snorted. “You in some coven we don’t know about?”
You shook your head. “I saw The Craft one-too-many times.”
Dean walked over to two older men sitting near the film crew. The assistant had indicated Vernon Haskell and a man named Charlie as potential enemies. It made sense; they were older, more traditional magicians, and surely, they didn’t enjoy these kids encroaching on their territory.
“You Vernon Haskell?” Dean asked, crouching behind the man.
“Who’s asking?” the man replied, turning around.
“Federal agent. Ulrich,” your partner said. “Looking into the death of Patrick Vance.”
You watched on as Jeb interviewed another older magician and got his name completely wrong.
“What a douche,” you commented quietly.
“Couldn't agree more,” Vernon said.
You smiled lopsidedly, turning to him and pulling the ten of swords out. “You use cards in your act, right?”
Vernon scoffed. “My act? That was a long time ago. I haven't touched a deck in years, y’know.” He held up his shaking hands, indicating a neurodegenerative disease.
“You know anybody who uses ‘em now?” you questioned.
“Well, there was a guy down on Bleeker Street.”
The other older man chimed in. “Oh, yeah. He— he peddles that kind of specialty stuff.”
Dean questioned, “Did he have a problem with Vance?”
Vernon nodded. “Matter of fact, Vance crossed him about a year ago. Probably cost him fifty grand in royalties.” He directed you toward where to find the young man whose name was apparently Chief.
You and Dean walked down a darkened street lined with neon signs to the address Vernon had given you.
“Wait, wait, wait,” you said. “Dean, I think this is the red-light district.”
“So what? Sex workers can be witches, too,” he shrugged.
“No, no, I know,” you argued. “But I think our magician friends are trying to get us pegged.”
Dean snorted. “Look, let’s just go check it out, okay?”
“Oh-kay.” You sighed and followed behind him into the building.
****
Around thirty minutes later, the two of you walked out again, and you were laughing hysterically. “I told you!” You wiped tears from your eyes and clutched your stomach. “ ‘You ain’t been had till you been had by the Chief’,” you mimicked the deep voice of the sex worker you’d run into.
“Fine, fine, you were right,” Dean grumbled. “Let’s— Let’s just go find Sam and never talk about this again, huh?”
“Don’t lie, you liked it.” You slapped his ass, smirking mischievously.
He wheeled around, giving you a challenging glare. While you continued to laugh, he slung an arm around your shoulders and pressed a kiss to the side of your head. “Shut up, asshole.”
****
You approached Vernon and Charlie with Sam and Dean hot on your heels.
“The Chief, huh?” You quirked a brow and crossed your arms.
“What's the matter? Chief not your type?” the other magician named Charlie smirked.
Dean smirked back. “Y’know, I could have you both arrested for obstruction of justice.”
“How?” Vernon scoffed. “You’re no Fed.”
“We con people for a living, son. Takes more than a fake badge to get past us,”Charlie explained.
Sam and Dean laughed a little awkwardly. You took the opportunity to step in. “You got us,” you said. “I’m, uh, looking for a gig as a showgirl. Thought by coming to the convention, I could get somebody interested in my… talents.” You looked down at your somewhat exposed breasts, knowing the role of the magician’s assistant in these circles was bordering on sex work.
Vernon considered for a moment, eyeing you up and down a bit despite his best efforts not to be a complete ass. “I’m sure you’ll find someone.”
Then, the man on stage pulled your attention away from your conversation. “Ladies and gentlemen,” the magician named Jay announced, “what you're about to witness is a feat so daring, So dangerous, even the great Houdini dared not attempt it. I give to you… The executioner!” He gave a straitjacket to an audience member to inspect. “Now, sir, as you can see, this jacket is the real article. Thank you, sir. You may take your seat. Now, I will have one minute— sixty seconds— to escape certain death. Let's see if I can do it.” The curtain fell on Jay, and you could see his silhouette as he tried to get out of his straitjacket with a noose wrapped around his neck.
As the clock ticked down, Dean whispered to you, “I don't think he's gonna make it.”
You kept your eyes glued to the silhouette, and when the clock struck zero, Jay appeared from behind the curtain completely unharmed.
“That was amazing!” Dean cheered, clapping. “That was fuckin’ amazing!”
You furrowed your brow, standing next to Sam as he said, “That was not humanly possible.”
****
After the show, the three of you headed back to your motel room to regroup.
“Looks like this guy Jay was a pretty big deal in the seventies,” Sam explained.
“Which, in magician land, means what, exactly?” Dean asked.
“Big enough to play Radio City Music Hall.”
“What got him stuck in their ‘Where are They Now?’ file?”
“He got old.”
You drew your lips together. “Okay, so, maybe he’s using real magic to make a comeback?” you suggested.
Sam shrugged. “It's possible. Some kind of spell that works a death transference.”
“How does the tarot card mix into it?” Dean questioned.
“You can use tarot for those kinds of spells,” you explained. “It’s heavy-duty magic. Almost like planting the tarot card is what lays the curse; the card is what carries the energy.”
Dean nodded, thinking for a moment. “Man, I hope I die before I get old. Whole thing seems brutal, don't it?”
“What, you don’t wanna hunt ghosts with me when we’re ninety?” you smirked, sitting down next to him on your bed.
He tossed an arm around you and pulled you to his side so the two of you were lounging against the headboard. “You’re great and all, but no.”
“You think we will?” Sam asked.
“What?” you and Dean replied in unison.
“Die before we get old,” Sam replied.
“Haven’t you and I already done that?” Dean laughed.
You nudged his ribs with your fist lightly. “Don’t remind me.”
“C’mon, Dean.” Sam rolled his eyes. “I mean, do you think we'll still be chasing demons when we're sixty?”
“No, I think we'll be dead for good,” he responded.
His words cast a solemn shadow over the room.
“What?” Dean said. “You wanna end up like— like Travis? Huh? Or Gordon, maybe?”
“There’s Bobby,” the younger brother suggested.
“Oh, yeah, there's a poster child for growing old gracefully,” Dean snickered.
“Maybe we'll be different, Dean.”
“What kind of Kool-Aid you drinking, man?” This conversation was clearly confusing Dean. “Sammy, it ends bloody or sad. That's just the life.”
As brutal as that was, it was true.
Sam went silent, but only for a moment. “What if we could win?”
“ ‘Win’?” Dean scoffed.
“If there was a way we could just…” the brunet paused to search for the words, “put an end to all of it.”
The older brother’s tone became serious. “Is there something going on you're not telling me?”
“No.”
“Sammy—”
“No. Look, I'm just saying— I just wish there was a way we could… go after the source. That's all. Cut the head off the snake,” he explained.
“Well, the problem with the snake is that it has a thousand heads. Evil bitches just keep piling out of the Volkswagen.” Although dejected, Sam conceded, “Yeah. Guess you’re right.”
“Why don't you go see if you can track down Jay?” Dean suggested. “We’ll see what we can dig up on this tarot card.”
Sam nodded. As soon as he was out of the room, you and Dean sat up to look at each other.
“Something’s definitely wrong, right?” Dean asked you.
You nodded. “Yeah, definitely.” You felt your stomach drop, hoping to god he wasn’t planning on using his powers again. Your fear was maybe irrational especially considering he knew what you’d been asked to do; you hoped he wasn’t that stupid.
Dean gave you a quick peck on the lips to pull you out of your thoughts. “Hey, c’mon. I’m sure he’s fine.”
Still a little zoned out, you nodded.
****
Sure enough, Jeb had been found hanging from the ceiling with the Hanged Man card in his back pocket. Your theory about the cards acting as targets for energy transference seemed to be right on the money, and Jay had been crossed by both men in the days before their deaths.
“Up against the wall!” Dean commanded, having followed Jay to his hotel room.
“God, who are you? What do you want?” he asked, clearly frustrated.
“Now!” your partner commanded again.
“We know what you did,” you told him, helping Dean pin the man to the wall.
“You been working some real bad mojo to jump-start your act,” Dean continued.
“What?” Jay scoffed. “I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Look, we know you put a spell on those tarot cards,” Sam said.
“Messing with real magic?” Dean added.
“ ‘Real magic’? Come on, there's no such thing as real magic,” Jay replied, struggling under you.
“Oh, is that so?”
“Yeah, believe me. I've been around this stuff my whole life. It's all just— It's— It's illusions. It's tricks. It— It's all fake!”
“Jeb Dexter strung up,” Dean argued, “was that just an illusion?”
“What? Something happened to Jeb?” Jay seemed genuinely surprised.
“He was found hanged in his room,” Sam replied, voice considerably less harsh. “Right after you slipped the noose last night.”
“I don't know what you're talking about. Please, just let me go.” “Something's not right,” you said.
“Usually they're whipping some badass hoodoo at us by now,” Dean affirmed.
The three of you tied Jay to a chair to keep him still so you could deliberate your next move. By the time you turned back around, though, Jay was gone.
“We shoulda seen that coming,” you sighed.
“Come on,” the brunet urged. “He couldn't have gotten that far.”
You followed him out of the room, but there was no one in the hallway. The three of you headed down to the lobby to get more of a look around.
Then, you saw the police at the door.
“Oh, fuck, guys.” You nodded at the men looking around the lobby.
“That's them!” Jay called as he appeared next to the police. “Those are the nut jobs that just broke into my room!”
****
Every encounter with the police was just starting to piss you off. You’d evaded them enough times to know this wasn’t going to be too much of an issue, but this was hindering your ability to do your job. Whoever was working with or for Jay now had even more of an opportunity to kill someone else.
You bounced your leg up and down while you sat on the bench in the holding cell, a few feet away from where another detainee slept. Dean paced, and Sam sat beside you. None of you spoke, each too pissed off and consumed by your own thoughts to form words.
Then, around midnight that night, the guard opened the cell. “Alright, Ulriches. You’re free to go.”
You exchanged a look with Dean, knowing something had probably happened to result in Jay dropping the charges. And thus, you met up with him in the hotel lobby.
“We have to talk,” he told you when you arrived. He brought you into the hotel’s bar where he gave you the news that Charlie had been killed during his act that night. “I was just a kid when we first met,” he lamented. “All I knew was how to cheat at cards. Charlie got me out of more scrapes than I can count. Hell, I would’ve been dead by the age of twenty if it hadn't been for him.” He sighed heavily, then took a swig of his drink. “He was more than my friend. He was my brother.”
“I'm sorry, Jay,” Sam told him.
“Look, I should have listened to you guys when you told me that my show was killing people.”
“Well, you weren't the one pulling the trigger,” Dean replied.
He put his glass down on the bar. “Yeah, but someone did, and I want to find out who did this to Charlie. So I'll do whatever you guys say. Just tell me what to do.”
“Jay, whoever's doing this,” the younger Winchester began, “they like you. They're probably close to you. Did Charlie and Vernon get along?”
Jay looked almost offended. “No. No, it’s not Vernon.”
“He's the only one that makes sense,” Dean urged.
“Charlie and Vernon were your family, Jay,” Sam added.
“And now Charlie's gone.”
“Yeah, but… they butted heads sometimes, but Vernon could never do something like this,” Jay tried.
“It doesn’t make complete sense to me, either,” you said, and all three men turned to you. “But he’s really the only option here. And real magic… it’s almost a drug. That kind of power can corrupt people in ways you may not even notice at first.”
Jay looked down at the granite in front of him. “You better be damn sure about this,” he finally said heavily. “Vernon's all I got left.”
“Well, let us go take a look around his room first,” you told the old man. “I mean, I’m assuming y’all have been on the road your whole life. Everything he owns will be in that room; including whatever mojo he’s working.”
Jay agreed and found a way to get Vernon downstairs. When he was gone, you began your search.
“Guys, it’s just a bunch of old-timey magic crap,” you noted, dropping a few red balls back in the cups they belonged to. “No herbs, no candles, and no tarot cards.”
“I'll be damned,” Dean breathed out.
At your and Sam’s questioning looks, Dean held up a poster to you. “Look like anyone we know?”
****
You and the Winchesters crept into the theater with your guns drawn. On the stage, you saw a much younger version of Charlie talking to Jay and Vernon about how he’d gained his immortality. Apparently, P.T. Barnum had given him the grimoire that taught him everything he knew about magic.
“And who else has to die so that we can live forever?” Jay argued.
“What's the price tag on immortality? This isn't right, Charlie; what you're doing. You know that. Somewhere, you know that.”
“I know I don't want to come back alone— to start all over, alone,” Charlie replied.
“Jay,” Vernon said hesitantly, “we can be young again.”
“The three of us together— Vital and alive forever.”
“Not so fast!” Dean butted in, stepping forward into the light on the stage. “I ain't Guttenberg, and this ain't Cocoon.” He nodded at Charlie. “Immortality. That's a neat trick.”
“It's not a trick. It's magic.” A noose appeared behind Dean as Charlie spoke.
“Dean, look out!” you screamed, but it was too late.
The noose dropped around Dean’s neck, lifting him in the air.
You and Sam immediately shot at Charlie, but he caught the bullet in his teeth.
“Hey, bullet catch,” Charlie chuckled, “been working on that.”
“Get him!” Dean choked.
“Let him go!” you shouted, rushing Charlie. You tackled him to the ground and slammed your fist into his face. He flipped you off him, taking out a knife and stabbing you through the stomach. Though, no pain ever came.
Instead, Charlie began to choke on his own blood, clutching his abdomen. “Jay,” Charlie panted, “you picked these strangers over me?”
Jay couldn’t answer him, and you pushed yourself upright to go check on Dean. “You okay?” you asked, supporting his head in one hand so you could see his neck and inspect it for injuries.
He grabbed the wrist holding his face. “Yeah. Yeah, I'm alright, sweetheart.”
You kissed his cheek and threw your arms around his neck while he held your waist.
****
When the dust had settled and Charlie had been taken to the morgue, you and the brothers met Jay in the hotel bar to say goodbye.
“Hey, Jay,” Dean said. “We wanted to thank you for what you did.”
“I just killed my best friend, and you want to thank me?” Jay responded, voice nearly devoid of emotion. His face held a sorrow you’d never seen in him before.
“Where's Vernon?” you asked.
Jay pursed his lips. “Oh, he's gone. He said he didn't want to speak to me again after what I did to Charlie.”
“Well, he’s a shit friend, then,” you said matter-of-factly. “Charlie was never gonna give up killing. You did the right thing.”
Jay turned to face you. “Are you sure about that? You know, Charlie was like my brother. And now he's dead... because I did ‘the right thing.’ He offered me a gift, and I just threw it back in his face. So now, I have to spend the rest of my life old and alone. What's so right about that?” He got up from the bar, leaving you and your boys in contemplative silence.
“Jay,” the bartender said, nodding to the pack of cards he’d left on the bar, “your cards.”
He took one last look at them before finally saying, “Throw them away.”
You watched as Jay left, heart bleeding for him.
“Well, I don't know about you, but I could go for a beer,” Dean said, sitting down on a barstool.
You laughed half-heartedly. “Me, too.”
“I'm gonna take a walk,” Sam told you and Dean. He was walking away before you or Dean could respond.
You looked after him as he left, anxiety gripping your chest. Something in you told you he was up to no good.

Hands shoved into the pockets of my 'FBI' coat, I followed a step behind Sam and Dean as we walked down a street in Las Vegas. But we weren't here for fun. No gambling for us, unfortunately. No. This was all about a job.
As we crossed the street, we neared a gathering people standing around a man dressed in black leather, and ripped jeans, with dark hair and eyeliner.
"This, this isn't a trick, okay?" the man told the audience as he shuffled some cards. "I- I- I don't do tricks. This is a demonstration. About demons and angels. Love and lust. All that stuff mixed up in my head."
"What a douchebag," Dean mumbled as we came to stand with the crowd.
I looked to the side, glancing at the camera person and microphone person as they focused on the man.
"That's Jeb Dexter," Sam noted.
Dean looked up at him, confused. "I don't even want to know how you know that."
Sam just shrugged. "He's famous, kind of."
"For what? Douchebaggery?"
I held back a laugh at Dean's disapproving attitude. "It's entertainment, Winchester." I smirked, looking up at the older brother.
He looked down at me, surprised for a moment before he returned my grin with a smirk of his own.
Jeb's voice pulled our attention back to him as he kept talking to the crowd. "But whatever happens, no matter how messed up it gets, don't touch me, okay? For your own safety, " he warned before inhaling deeply.
After a moment, he closed his eyes and exhaled, focusing as he shifted on the spot. Taking a deep breath, he shook his head, letting the air out again.
Suddenly he gasped as he began to shake as if having a seizure. With one hand, he grabbed the deck of cards that sat in the other hand as he opened his eyes enough so we could only see the whites.
"Go back to hell, demon!" Flinging the cards at the window behind him, we all watched as one of the cards stuck to the glass. The ace of diamonds. Reaching forward, Jeb ran his hand over the card, only to reveal that it was on the other side of the glass now. "Is this your card?" he asked a woman in the audience.
Applause broke out in the crowd.
"You've got to be kidding me. A fake demon possession?" Dean shook his head as he turned to walk away. "I can't believe people actually fall for that crap."
"It's not all crap," Sam argued as the two of us followed Dean.
"What part of that was not a steaming pile of BS?" Dean asked, gesturing back to Jeb and the people surrounding him.
Sam gave a short nod, agreeing with Dean there. "Okay, that was crap, but that's not all magicians. It takes skill."
Stopping in his tracks, Dean turned to his brother, grinning. "Oh, right, right, I forgot. You were actually into this stuff, weren't you?"
A smile spread across my lips. "Really?"
Turning to me, Dean was clearly enjoying the fact he was embarrassing his brother. "I mean, he had like a deck of cards, a wand and everything," he told me.
I had to fight back the laugh bubbling in my chest. Sam Winchester, an aspiring magician. Now that's something I would have wanted to see.
Sam rolled his eyes. "Dude, I was thirteen. It was a phase."
Shaking his head, Dean shrugged. "Just... it bugs me. You know, playing at demons and, and magic, when the real thing will kill you bloody."
"Like a guy who drops dead of ten stab wounds without a single tear in his shirt?" Sam noted, talking about the case.
Dean gave a sharp nod as he started to walk again. "That's what I'm talking about."
DPOV
In the victim's hotel room, Liz, Sam and I were in the process of asking his assistant some questions while she packed up all of Vance's- the victim's- things.
"So, did your boss have any enemies that you know of?" I asked.
The assistant nodded. "Vance had plenty of enemies." Leaning down, she grabbed the end of a series of tied-together handkerchiefs and began to pull them out of a bag to wrap them up.
"How so?" Sam questioned.
The assistant shrugged. "He would steal from other magicians. All the time."
"What would he steal?" Liz asked while I frowned at the handkerchief rope that just kept coming out of the bag as if it would never end.
See, this is one of the reasons why I didn't like this kind of magic. I just didn't understand why it was so interesting. A never-ending rope of handkerchiefs? Where's the magic in that? How is it supposed to be entertaining?
That's another thing. Magic is not supposed to be entertaining. It's dangerous. Deadly. Real magic? It ends in death, and torture and mayhem. Real magic? It's messy and gross and bloody.
"Stage effects, closeup techniques," the assistant answered, the rope finally coming to an end. "Anything he could get his hands on."
Pulling my attention back to the assistant, I asked the next question. "Is that enough to get him killed?"
"These guys take this stuff pretty seriously," she noted as she reached over to remove a cloth from a table, revealing a white rabbit. "There you are." Bending down, she picked the rabbit up as I spoke again.
"Did you find anything weird in Vance's stuff? Well, weirder?"
"Matter of fact, I did." Putting the rabbit in a bag, she then pulled something out of a pocket of a cape before showing us the object.
It was a tarot card, the Ten of Swords. The picture on the card was of a man lying on the ground with ten swords sticking into his back.
"I'm guessing this didn't belong to Vance," Sam noted as he reached forward to take the car.
The assistant shook her head. "He hated card tricks. Never wanted them around. Let alone in his precious cape."
EPOV
While Sam was off doing some research, Dean and I walked into a theatre to find a possible lead. Up the front, on top of the stage, hung a sign. The Incredible Jay over the Table of Death. Under that sign of Jeb, on the phone, clearly annoyed and pissed.
"It's a lame gig. I'm in a fleabag hotel doing this man-of-the-people crap, and freaking Angel's in Vegas doing Cirque du Soleil! That should have been mine." He shook his head, even though the person on the other end of the phone couldn't see him. Hanging up, he sat down at a table, across from an older man while the camera crew hovered. "All right, boys, get it in gear, I don't got all day."
Dean and I moved to a table near Jeb's where two older men sat, watching the interview between Jeb and the other older man.
"You Vernon Haskell?" Dean asked as he sat behind the man he was addressing.
"Who's asking?"
"Federal agent, Ulrich. This is my partner, Agent Hetfield," Dean introduced as the two of us pulled out our FBI IDs. "We're looking into the death of Patrick Vance."
Our attention was pulled back to Jeb as he started the interview. "I'm Jeb Dexter. This is Devil Twist. We're chilling at the International Magicians' Convention, which is a dope chance to tip my hat to the wicked cats who came before me. Smoking hot effect last night, Jim."
"Jay," the older man corrected.
Jeb frowned at him, clearly confused. "Huh?"
"My name is Jay."
"Yeah, whatever." Jeb waved Jay off. "We can loop it later."
Vernon shook his head at the younger magician. "What a douchebag."
"Couldn't agree more." Dean grinned as I held back a chuckle. "Is, uh," he pulled the Ten of Swords card out from his pocket, "this familiar to you?"
Turning to give the card a glance, Vernon shrugged as he focused on Jeb and Jay again. "Should it be?"
"Well, we heard that you used tarot cards in your act," Dean noted.
"My act?" Vernon let out a humous laugh. "That was a long time ago. I haven't touched a deck in years, you know..." He held up his hand, showing us how shaky it was.
"Well, do you know anyone who might use them now?" I asked.
Vernon thought about it for a moment before nodding. "Well, there was a guy down on Bleeker Street."
"Oh, yeah. He, he peddles that kind of specialty stuff," the man with Vernon added.
Dean looked to the two men. "Did he have a problem with Vance?"
"Matter of fact, Vance crossed him about a year ago," Vernon answered, voice slightly hushed. "Probably cost him fifty grand in royalties," he added, the man next to him nodding confirmation.
"Would you happen to know where this person is?" I asked as Dean tucked the tarot card back into the pocket of his jacket.
"Four twenty-six Bleeker," Vernon answered without missing a beat.
"Ask for Chief," his friend added.
"Chief?" Dean asked, getting a nod in return. "Thank you." He gave Vernon a pat on the back as the two of us stood, leaving.
...
"Stay close to me," Dean told me as we walked down the creepy looking street, heading for the building Vernon and his friend directed us to.
I wasn't feeling too good about this. The lonely street. The sirens in the background. The dark night. The unending possibilities of danger lurking in every corner of the place. It just wasn't sitting right with me.
Coming to stop at the door of the building we were looking for, Dean knocked on the bars of the door before taking half a step back so he stood closer to me.
The chain-link door inside swung open, revealing a man dressed in black, who looked the two of us up and down.
Trying to play it cool, Dean moved another inch or so closer to me as he spoke to the man. "We're, uh… here to see Chief."
Raising an eyebrow, the guy looked us over once more before opening the door without a word. Stepping to the side, he gestured for us to enter, which we did.
The moment I stepped over the threshold, Dean's hand found its way into mine. I was startled for a moment but didn't question or stop him. I knew he was just being his protective self, so I let him hold my hand as we moved through the dark and mysterious building, following the man as he took us down to the basement.
As we came to a stop, the man turned to us. "Stay here. Don't touch anything," was all he said before he walked off.
Once we were alone, I turned to Dean, shaking my head. "I don't like this."
Looking around, I tried to ignore the gut-wrenching feeling inside me that was screaming at me, telling me to get out of there. The graffiti on the walls, exposed pipes, and dark atmosphere, it all seemed to increase the suspicion growing inside me.
Suddenly some music started playing in the background. We could hear the thumping of the bass get louder as a door opened, the light on the other side streaming in. Another man walked into the room, climbing the stairs, the light coming in from behind him making it hard to get a good look of the guy. That was until he stepped closer...
The was dressed in all leather, carrying a flogger which he used to slap his hand a few times. "You are really gonna get it tonight." He grinned at the two of us.
Dean moved a little closer to me as he tried to explain our way out of his. "There's been a misunderstanding." He grinned, just as embarrassed as I suddenly felt. "I, uh, think we've been had."
"Oh, you ain't been had till you been had by the Chief." The Chief smirked for a moment before he quickly added, "Oh, and before we get started, what's your safe-word?"
Oh, my God...
SPOV
Sitting in the motel room, doing some research on my laptop, I looked up at the sound of a knock on the door. Getting out of my seat, I walked around to go check to see who might be here. As I looked through the peephole, I let out a sigh, seeing Ruby on the other side.
Opening the door, I looked down at her. "What are you doing here, Ruby?"
Arms crossed over her chest, she looked as annoyed as I felt. "I should be asking you the same thing," she countered, pushing past me and into the room.
Closing the door, I followed her to the middle of the room. "I'm working a job."
"The whole world's about to be engulfed in hellfire, and you're in Magictown, USA."
I let out a short, bitter laugh. "You got something against magic?"
"That would almost be funny if thirty-four seals hadn't been broken already." She gave me an exasperated look. "Thirty-four, Sam. That's over halfway. The angels are losing this war. Every day is one day closer, and if someone doesn't do something soon-"
I cut her off, "And that someone is me?"
"Who else would it be? Lizzie?"
"Leave her out of this." If I didn't want anything to do with the end of the world, there was no way I was letting Lizzie deal with it. Not the way Ruby was talking about. "Look, I don't know where these seals are. I don't know squat. So why don't you tell me where you'd like me to start?"
"Well, you can quit dicking around here, for one. Bigger fish, Sam. And if the seals are being broken, you might want to go after the one doing the breaking."
"Lilith?"
"Cut the head off the snake. You're the only one who can stop her, Sam." She stepped up to me. "So, step up and kill the little bitch," she said as she passed me to stand on the other side of the room.
"Oh, I'm game, believe me," I assured her as I moved to where she'd been standing before. "It's not the psychic thing I got a problem with."
"Yeah, I know what you got a problem with, but tough. It's the only way."
"No." It was that simple.
"You know, this would all be so much easier if you'd just admit to yourself that you like it. That feeling that it gives you."
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"Oh, I don't, huh? Fine." She moved to leave, only to stop herself. "It's simple. Lucifer rises, the apocalypse starts. You think that you have blood on your hands now? People are gonna die, Sam. Oceans of people. So, you just let me know when you're ready." This time, she didn't stop, she just left.
DPOV
Back in the theatre, Liz and I headed over to where Sam stood, waiting for us. Liz and I hadn't really talked about what happened at the Chief's. It was awkward. Not because something happened, nothing happened, really. Once we explained the situation, the Chief was pretty understanding. Apparently, people got tricked into going there a lot.
No, the awkward part was what happened after. When Liz and I were in the dark street again. Standing there, in silence, thinking over what had just happened, and all the memories it brought up. Memories of us.
There was no point in denying my feelings anymore. I liked Liz. I knew. Sam knew it. I was pretty sure Liz did, too. So, standing there, in the ally, by ourselves... yeah it had been awkward.
"Find anything interesting?" I asked Sam as we reached him.
He turned to us. "What? Uh, no. You?"
I shook my head. "Nothing I want to talk about, or think about, ever again." There was no way I was telling him about the Chief. So, instead, I started towards Vernon and his friend as they stood closer to the stage. "The Chief, huh?"
They both turned to Liz, Sam and I, Vernon's friend smirking at us. "What's the matter? Chief not your type?"
I grinned back, but was clearly unamused. "You know, I could have you both arrested for obstruction of justice."
"How? You're no Fed," Vernon stated simply.
"We con people for a living, son," his friend added. "Takes more than a fake badge to get past us."
I let out a nervous laugh, our cover was blown. "You got us. Yeah, we- we are actually- aspiring magicians," I lied.
Sam nodded. "Yeah, we- we came to the convention 'cause we thought we could learn something."
"To get some idea for our new show," Liz finished.
Vernon looked intrigued. "Ooh, what kind of show?"
"Well, it's- it's a-"
When I stumbled on thinking something up, Sam saved the day. "It's a brother act."
"And I'm their assistant," Liz quickly added.
I went on with the lie, trying to make it sound believable. "Yeah. Yeah, you know, with the rings and doves and... rings."
Before anyone else could say more, applause broke out in the gathering audience as someone spoke into a microphone, introducing an act. "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you The Incredible Jay."
"You want to learn something? Stick around." Vernon's friend gestured to the stage where Jay- the guy who Jeb had interviewed earlier- stood.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Jay addressed the audience, "what you're about to witness is a feat so daring, So dangerous, even the great Houdini dared not attempt it. I give to you...The Executioner!" Suddenly, a noose fell from the roof as the crowd 'oohed' and 'ahhed'.
...
Jay was now strapped into a straightjacket, the noose around his neck as someone from the audience checked to make sure that he was in fact, securely strapped in.
"Now, sir, as you can see, this jacket is the real article. Thank you, sir." Jay nodded to the man. "You may take your seat." Once the man was off the stage, Jay addressed everyone again. "Now, I will have one minute, sixty seconds, to escape certain death. Let's see if I can do it."
A curtain fell in front of Jay, so only his silhouette can be seen and he began to struggle and a time started to tick away.
He continues to try and escape, but as far as I could see, he wasn't getting anywhere. He was still firming strapped into the jacket.
"I don't think he's gonna make it," I mumbled to Liz and Sam.
The timer kept ticking down. Twenty-five seconds. Twenty. Fifteen. Yet he still wasn't out. There was no change.
As the clock reached ten seconds, Liz's hand grabbed mine, squeezing it tightly. I looked over at her, seeing her eyes wide with fear and anticipation. Turning back to the stage, I watched as the timed clicked to zero and the bottom under Jay fell away, leaving him hanging.
People cried out, gasped, stood and looked away as the lights changed so we could no longer see the silhouette.
But the curtains were then pushed aside, revealing Jay, standing there, unharmed and out of the noose and jacket.
People cheered and applauded the act as Jay gave a bow.
"Oh! That was amazing!" I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. "That was freakin' amazing!"
But Sam shook his head, looking at the stage, confused. "That was... not humanly possible."

WHILE STREAMERS WATCHED THEIR FLICKS BY NIGHT...
Merry Christmas Eve Eve everybody! The Phoenix Film Critics Society...
Tumblr media
...of which Your Humble Narrator is proud to be a founding member, recently announced our 2022 Award winners. As always, some of the winners--like Best Actor--reflect my voting, others don't, but there are a lot of movies worth seeing on the list.
A few other odds and ends...
Tumblr media
Cash on Demand--Last week I was shown this 1961 gem I had never caught up with, a no-kidding Christmas movie from Hammer Films! It's available on DVD; I highly recommend. Peter Cushing plays a joyless bank manager, cold and critical toward his employees, who gets his Christmas Eve ruined when a suave bounder (Andre Morell) tells him that his cohorts are holding Cushing's wife and son hostage while he plunders the vault at the provincial branch. Cushing, unsurprisingly, is great--despicable at first, gradually shading into sympathy as his desperation rises--and Morell is sensational, in maybe the best role he ever had, as the sinister yet curiously charismatic thief.
Tumblr media
Richard Vernon nicely leads the small ensemble that plays the branch employees. It's a gripping, imaginative caper, though of course it's just one more variation on the Scrooge story, with the robber serving as a felonious Ghost of Christmas Present.
Tumblr media
Something From Tiffany's--Two guys, played by Ray Nicholson (Jack's kid) and Kendrick Sampson, buy jewelry at the title shop as Christmas presents for their respective lady friends (Zoey Deutsch and Shay Mitchell). One's a pair of earrings; the other's an engagement ring. A mishap mixes up the gift bags, and wackiness ensues. I was recently pointed toward this romcom, streaming on Prime. It's very undemanding, but it's inventive, Zoey Deutsch makes a sweet heroine and her costars, including the great Rose Abdoo as the Tiffany's clerk, are pleasant company. And it seems like it's a cut above most of the Hallmark Christmas movies.
Tumblr media
American Murderer--A stalwart FBI man played by Ryan Phillippe searches for fugitive Jason David Brown, who was on the Ten Most Wanted List at the same time as Osama bin Laden and Whitey Bulger for killing an armored car guard here in Phoenix in November of 2004. As Phillippe talks to Brown's family and acquaintances we get his story in flashback (it's often different from what they're telling the agent). I'm late to the party on this true-crime drama released earlier this year, written and directed by Matthew Gentile and available on various streaming platforms. Don't let the poster fool you into dismissing this as a routine action flick; it's an absorbing feature debut for Gentile, a tense, believable piece of work, full of disturbing scenes that feel like something you'd witness as a passerby. Soap actor Tom Pelphrey plays Brown as a tightly-wound obsequious hustler, sort of a coked-up Eddie Haskell. Though he worms his way into the house and bed of his single-mom neighbor (Idina Menzel) and plays video games with her son, and though he can still get over on his own siblings, his Mom (Jacki Weaver) has long since recognized him for the callous creep he is. But even he isn't prepared for the psychic weight of murder, and Gentile gets across this internal horror impressively. It's worth checking out, maybe after Christmas.

Rob Lowe Relists Magnificent Montecito Mansion for $42.5M
Arnold Jerocki/WireImage
Actor Rob Lowe and his wife, Sheryl Lowe, have relisted their Montecito mansion with a discount. The expansive estate is being offered for $42.5 million. It had been listed about a year ago for $47 million.
Called Oakview Estate, the home was built from the ground up after the couple purchased the 3.4-acre site in 2006 for $8.5 million. Harking back to Lowe’s Virginia roots, the Georgian-style estate takes inspiration from George Washington′s Mount Vernon estate.
The couple worked with architect Don Nulty, along with interior designer David Phoenix, landscape architect Mark Rios, and feng shui master David Cho, according to a spread in Architectural Digest.
The result? A classic, East-Coast style home with modern amenities and ultraluxe details.
“We believe it’s the most exciting listing to hit the market in years in the Montecito area. It’s a new build that’s amongst the finest in the world, in one of the most amazing locations in the world,” says Eric Haskell of The Agency. He and Luke Ebbin of Compass hold the listing.

“It would be impossible to build this home again in Montecito,” Haskell adds. “It’s a true legacy estate designed for family, friends and memories. You can host a formal event or gather with small groups in the many inviting indoor and outdoor spaces. In our opinion, it’s the ultimate modern-day family compound.”
With 10,000 square feet of living space, the huge home includes six bedrooms and 11 baths. Inside, you’ll find a chef’s kitchen with a marble island, a living room with fireplace, a wet bar, family room, dining room, and a library. There’s also a professional home theater, as well as a gym.
Outdoors, the veranda is accessed through French doors. You can lounge in front of the wood-burning fireplace or watch a movie from the outdoor living room. Along with rolling lawns, the space also features a koi pond, gardens, plus ocean and mountain views.
The grounds also offer a tennis court, pool, poolhouse, and a two-bedroom guesthouse.
Located about 90 miles from Los Angeles, the exclusive enclave close to Santa Barbara attracts celebrities and wealthy residents alike. Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus have all owned homes there.
The family compound first came onto the market a year ago, for $47 million. “With our boys now out of the house, we’re looking forward to our next real estate adventure,” Lowe told the Los Angeles Times last year.
However, with no takers, the couple have switched real estate agents and lowered the price to its current ask.
The actor rose to fame with roles in “The Outsiders” and “St. Elmo’s Fire.” He also starred in the popular TV drama “The West Wing” and the comedy show “Parks and Recreation.” More recently, he starred in a reality show, “The Lowe Files,” with his two sons.

Functional Programming with Phunkie: Funky Parser Combinators
Phunkie is a library with functional structures for PHP. In this tutorial, Phunkie creator Marcello Duarte, head of training at Inviqa, explains how to create Parser combinators using the functional library. This post first appeared on the Inviqa blog, and was republished here with their permission.
Learning functional programming
Functional programming really matters. Pure functions (or functions with no side effect) are the perfect units of behaviour because we can rely on them to build larger and more complex systems. The greatness of functional programming relies on this power of composability.
That’s something I first came to believe back in the days of my licentiate degree on Computing for Management, during a semester in AI with Lisp. My course curriculum was mostly focused on C/C++, therefore I had to stay focused on where the skills demand was.
Thankfully, I’ve been able to reignite my love of studying functional programming here at Inviqa where we’re delivering more and more projects based on Scala, the general purpose programming language.
I’ve read "the red book" about three times (the Chiusano & Bjarnason one, not the Vaughn Vernon’s one). I took all the Martin Odersky’s Coursera courses, and I spent hours of my weekends watching videos and reading papers.
And I set myself a challenge: to do with functional programming what I did when I was learning TDD and created PHPSpec (a BDD testing and design tool for PHP developers) to help me learn; I decided to write my own functional programming dialect in PHP. And so Phunkie was born!
Now over to you. Learning functional programming means immersing yourself in a new paradigm, which can be challenging. It requires a totally different mindset for approaching problems.
So, by the time you can use functional programming to solve real-world problems, you’ll have spent hours grasping the new thinking or getting clued-up on the theory.
In this tutorial, my aim is to help fast-track your journey by going over my implementation of Hutton & Meijer’s Monadic Parser Combinators. Hopefully you will be able to see both the thinking and the usefulness of functional programming.
And, by using Phunkie, you can eliminate the need to learn Haskell to understand the topic. All you should need is some familiarity with PHP.
So let’s get started!
