Ask Masterpost 1/25/2025
I will be answering the BLOG RELATED asks that I have received since opening my inbox. Lucky number three this finally becomes consistent :).
I would like to state here that even though I don't respond to them (I'm persnickety about keeping ask spam low) I very much appreciate everyone's well wishes and compliments and gratefulness for this blog. I screenshot all of them and keep them in a folder. Thank you so much and I hope you keep having fun :).
@forrest-knight asked: Hello! I am here to ask for some clarification regarding the rules: “Songs from multimedia series that are primarily NOT video games (such as the Homestuck minigames, for example) will not be accepted.” I’m a bit confused with this rule, does this mean we’re not allowed to submit songs from licensed video games (aka games made for non video game media), even if the song is originally made for the game (ex. To The Moon from the DuckTales NES game). Or does this rule is intended for something completely different? *please note that I’ve never read homestuck, so this might relate to my confusion Anyways, thank you so much for doing this! And I hope you have a great whatever time you are reading this!
SO Homestuck was the only example I could think of at the time as a series that actually did this. I was specifically thinking about franchises/series/works that 100% did not start off intending to be a video game but, in the nature of being a multimedia series, added video game minigames or mobile games as it developed.
This is referring to things like homestuck (a webcomic that featured small browser/flash games within the comic), many idol gacha games** (hypnosis mic, love live), etc. This does not include series that were 'completed' (loosely used since I know many of these frequently get universe-expanding sequels and threequels and whathaveyou) and then had video game spinoffs, such as Star Wars, Marvel, etc.
** exceptions being tracks that are exclusively used in the video game itself, such as BGM.
I know this rule is probably the most complicated one and I'm still trying to figure out how to word it clearly and precisely LMAO. Fundamentally it comes down to intent, which is why I'm still on the fence some things like tracks used exclusively in promotional materials and things like that.
That being said: if the song is originally from a video game as in literally you can hear it while you are playing the video game you are totally in the clear
And according to your second ask (I won't name the songs in case you want to submit them): The one made for and coming from the NES game is fine (of course), AND the one that is the 8-bit version of the NON-VGM one is ALSO FINE, because it was REMIXED for the NES game :).
-----
**NUMEROUS QUESTIONS ABOUT PUTTING DISCLAIMERS ASKING PEOPLE NOT TO SPOIL THE SONGS**
The blind listening and polling period is just for fun! If someone really likes a song and wants to know what it is/where it's from, PLEASE feel free to tell them!!! And PLEASE always enter the notes with the expectation that there may be song spoilers!!
I will ask that you keep it in the TAGS rather than the comments or reblogs (you're more than welcome to DM people the title if they ask), just for the sake of people who might want to discuss the song without spoilers. I'll put that in the pinned and the (eventual...) formal rules.
-----
What's up! New here so sorry if this has been asked before but has the exact same song been submitted more than once before? Like it's clearly different people but the same song keeps getting submitted over and over again?
Ever since Mod Rae cleared duplicates I have no idea anymore, BUT I know there have been a lot of different submissions for a few select Disco Elysium songs. That doesn't shock me because I know it's got a cult following here :).
-----
do you get a lot of the same people in ur notes or is it like. a few of the same and then it branches out to fandoms where people know the song? or do u not pay attn to your notes at all (also fair)
I do read the notes (when I remember)! I really like hearing people's opinions, and I always look through the tags on songs I know (I find it really hilarious seeing 'is this dark souls?' 'is this nier?' on any orchestral ever). There are a lot of familiar faces but I'd say the majority for any given poll are new or sparsely in the notes :).
-----
Would you ever consider adding two more "i dont feel strongly/have an opinion" options to the polls? Specifically, "it sounds familiar and i dont have an opinion" and "ive def heard it before and dont feel strongly/have an opinion"? Of course, if theres a specific reason why you dont add those two as options, feel free to ignore this, ty <3
I've considered this -- but honestly, that button has always existed as more of a 'I just want to click a button' option than an actual datapoint I'm looking for (I think I might have answered an ask similar to this before but I don't remember so I'm answering it again LOL). When that option dominates, I always read the notes and tags for discussion and I'd encourage anyone who is genuinely interested to do the same. Actual complex opinions, of course, cannot be captured with the limitations of preset poll options anyways LMFAO.
-----
@mkcannothelpyou asked: I'm beginning to wonder if spacing series severely further apart and prioritising picks further down the queue that aren't as represented would make for a more interesting order - as it is, it feels like you can more or less still track what people submitted and when, with waves of series (and closely related works within those series, at that) coming in conspicuously densely. Hearing the same style only days apart might impact poll results for the negative as time goes on.
This was mostly the fault of me allowing people to submit multiple songs at once, leading to songs with similar qualities (as they are all liked by one person with a particular taste) being grouped together, even if they're from different series. I limit submissions to one per period now so this will not be a problem in the future :').
-----
@the-mayor-of-space asked: how long do submissions typically stay open once they are open?
I originally wanted to have them permanently opened (thinking people wouldn't mind waiting for their submissions) until I got an insane amount of submissions, severely underestimating the popularity of this blog. I then tried to do a 24 hr submission period, and then a 12 hr submission period, but both of these still ended up with a fuck ton of submissions so the current answer is 'They're closed until I can figure out something proper'...
I don't want purging the existing submissions to be on the table, but if I get to the 1 year anniversary of this blog without a better option I might have to go that route -- in which case I'd probably publish all the unposted options so people know if theirs was cut so they know to resubmit it if they're still interested.
-----
**NUMEROUS QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW FAR BACK THE SUBMISSIONS ARE**
WE'RE FINALLY IN AUGUST!!!!!!!!
-----
are fan/non official/non licensed versions of songs allowed? because i am 100% certain #293 is a fan made remaster and medley arrangement (im not the submitter but i know the song well - i found the youtube video the audio is from and the comments from OP confirm it is a fan remix). if they are, that's totally cool, but i couldn't find anything in the submission rules about it. i dont intend this ask to be rude or hostile at all, and either way im grateful you've created such an active community with this blog!
They're not really allowed unless they're from a mod or fangame. Since it's a fanmade remaster it's kind of towing the line, so I'm not inherently against it, but it might end up just being a highly situational thing.
Note: I'm not familiar with Fire Emblem at ALL but I knew this particular song was from an older game, which is why I wasn't opposed to posting the remastered version. In any future submissions I'd appreciate if this sort of thing were indicated just in case! I will add that to the submission guidelines :). And of course if there's a better way to go about this (i.e if the game is like, 30+ years old fanmade remasters/upscales are permitted or something like that) I will make sure that's made clear as well :).
-----
sorry if you've answered this before but I was just wondering, are people allowed to submit spoiler songs for the polls? like final boss songs and songs from endings and secret endings
Absolutely! But I think for all future submissions (this doesn't apply now since there's a huge backlog) I might put a hold on the submissions of OSTS from new games for like 1-2 months (i.e No Mario Kart 9 OSTs until two months after the game drops!) so people who are playing/going to play the game have time to play it before hearing the OSTs unprompted.
-----
@its-daisukenojobito asked: Just out of curiosity, do you prefer the more obscure submissions, or more well known? I feel like for the sake of reach, the more well known the better, but as a participant, i love being able to hear something I wasn't expecting, and knowing it!
I have no preference, but it's always fun hearing good stuff from games and series I've literally never heard of!
-----
@venonomnomicon asked: am i allowed to DM to check the status of a submission? it was a couple of months ago though i do respect it's probably just deep in the queue as you get hundreds of submissions a month lol
Absolutely, but you'll have to DM my main blog (@himejoshi) because apparently tumblr doesn't let you have DMs when you have more than one blog admin.
-----
@royvalentine asked: is the form supposed to be only submittable once?
Yes, so people would only submit one song per submission period. I intended to make a new form for every submission period... There just hasn't been one since.
-----
hi question, do pinball tables count as video games?
I don't think I have enough experience to answer this question... What do y'all think????

Ask Masterpost 2/1/2025
Fourth edition! I changed some formatting things for better readability.
Summary:
Permissibility of creator-leaked/teased soundtracks (Not allowed)
Proposal of demographics poll
Permissibility of Simlish covers (Allowed)
What franchise has the most polls?
Permissibility of remixes of licensed music (Allowed)
Inquiry about duplicate submissions
Permissibility of pinball soundtracks (Not Allowed) and Inquiry about ports of older games
Permissibility of unused tracks in the game files (Allowed)
Permissibility of roblox game tracks (Allowed)
Highest "I like & I know it" song?
Inquiry about revealing the composer before the reveal
Proposal of demographics poll
"Can we submit 'leaked' soundtracks from games if the creator leaked/teased them?"
I'm going to say no, because there's a broad spectrum of scenarios that could happen in between the 'leak' and the official launch of the song that would technically make the 'leak' not indicative of the final product and of course you don't know that until the final product is released :').
----------
@pomrania asked:
Is there any chance we could get a poll on what people mean when they vote for that they like a song, or that it sounds familiar? For me, "I like this song" means "I'd want to listen to it again once it's revealed", and "it sounds familiar" generally means "I'm not sure whether I've heard it before but I might have" also sometimes it's "I know I haven't heard this SPECIFIC song before, but I recognize the motifs in it".
Or if that's not something you'd want to make a poll for, then I'd still be interested in seeing what people say for how they vote on things, like in the comments.
I think this would be super interesting to do for a special event or something like that! I've been curious about demographics and other general statistics for a while now. I'm actually starting to have quite a good rhythm with managing the blog now so I may begin implementing the fun side ideas I've had sometime soon (or at least, I hope so, this semester is looking rough LOL)
----------
Can we submit simlish versions of popular songs, like simlish Katy Perry?
They're remixes for a game so absolutely! I think we already have some in the submissions queue.
----------
Which franchise/game has the most polls?
It's probably destiny (forlorn, distant stare).
----------
@haellen-o asked:
Is licensed music created/remixed for video games allowed?
(examples being the version of rob zombies dragula in the original jet set radio. And ludens by bring my the horizon)
It's an official remix for the game's soundtrack, so absolutely :).
----------
Out of curiosity, how often do you get duplicate requests from different people (or maybe the same person, worried you never got their first response, lol)? I think you've said you have around 7,000 requests, is that after removing duplicates or before?
We honestly have a lot of duplicate requests for popular games, and we've been shaving down the duplicates as we go along and queue new submissions. I think we've cut down AROUND ~1000 duplicates so far (we're not done!) and these are mostly very popular (at least on tumblr) games such as disco elysium, sonic series games, in stars and time, final fantasy, pokemon, tf2, mass effect, hollow knight, legend of zelda, just off the top of my head. The 7000 number was from before removing duplicates.
----------
for older games where the music is ported to different consoles, would the soundtracks be considered separate if the soundfonts impact them enough, or do they have to be very, VERY different? Like if a game was released on pc vs a 32x port.
Also, if a pinball cabinet includes a soundtrack, is that considered a video game soundtrack?
I would honestly just submit your PREFERRED version (if the soundfonts did differ), and I would put BOTH versions into the reveal, since I don't think this is a common enough occurrence to be significantly obnoxious/unfair for whatever reason. As for the pinball question, last masterpost answered overwhelmingly 'no', so I'm going to say no as well :').
----------
Are unused vgms allowed for submission? So in the files but never added to the game itself.
If you can credit the creator of the tracks then yes! (provided they're in the files in the final publicly released version and not from a demo/waiting for a future update to be implemented in a live service game/etc)
----------
are roblox games allowed?
Yes, if you can credit the creator of the tracks and they were made for that roblox game :).
----------
what song had the highest "I like it and I've definitely heard it before" percent?
I think it is still #100, which was Megalovania from Undertale (85.20%) Correction: It's Death By Glamour, #460, at 87% :)
----------
@enderlordisadumbusername asked:
are we allowed to mention song composers before the song has been revealed?
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And please do!!!!!! (This will literally only give away the game if you were already familiar enough to know the composer, so it's actually very perfect)
----------
Would you or have you ever run a poll to gauge how much of a song your followers listen to before voting?
Definitely considering it after learning a lot of people don't listen to the full song or even at least the first minute...

Ask Masterpost #7 (Admin Asks) -- 3/15/2025
Maybe I should change the posting date of these to Sunday so I stop procrastinating them on Saturdays, LOL.
Anyways, this is the first edition of non-blog focused asks (fun questions, personal questions, etc), so I'm not going to write up a summary since none of this is essential information for submissions or anything like that :).
Since I'm writing it up so late in the day I'm going to post it with my answers, but Mod Rae may update it with their answers so feel free to check back! In the future hopefully I'll be able to write it up in enough time to give them a chance :').
----------
@foulwinter asked: Ever heard of either of Sonic CD's soundtracks? I grew up with the US soundtrack but I love both of them. I think the war between which soundtrack is silly when you look at it from the perspective of having MORE Sonic CD music
Admin: I have never been a big sonic fan, so I have no horse in this race :'). But I do agree that it's nice to have more soundtrack per soundtrack!
----------
@pearlhoardingdragon asked: If you had to stick with one family of consoles for the rest of your life, would it be playstation, nintendo, or xbox?
Admin: PC 4 Lyfe (I never had enough money for consoles growing up </3). I'd probably pick Nintendo though, since I like the switch and DS.
----------
Thoughts on Yoko Shimomura?
Admin: LOVE HER!!! I haven't played a lot of the games she has worked on but from what I've heard from her she is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
----------
who's your favourite villain in ffxiv?
Admin: The only Final Fantasy villain I know is Sephiroth... and I think he's cute and silly 💔
----------
stance on Nerdcore video game songs? (Miracle of Sound, Aviators, JT Music, etc) both as submissions and just in general.
Admin: I don't think I have a strong/opinion-worthy stance on any genre of music, because all music that I like regardless of genre is good music. Simple as.
----------
Would you say you've gotten fulfillment out of starting this project? I remember you have it posted somewhere that you started this blog because you wanted to listen to new music, so what's it been like? Any favorites that stand out?
Admin: Yes!! This has been really fun and ESPECIALLY so since I finally figured out some things to help me maintain it without messing with my insane schedule within the last few months. I definitely need to make a proper list of my favorites but I think my most favorite song that I discovered 100% from submissions alone is #212, Tenebre Rosso Sangue from ULTRAKILL. (this wasn't an anon ask, but I forgot to write the blog name before deleting the ask to clear it from my inbox... </3)
----------
what is your favourite kind of bread, actually?
Admin: Any flatbread!!!!!! Pita bread, naan, roti, and especially tortillas <-- put it in my mouth
----------
out of every song posted, do you have a least favourite? if so, what?
Admin: The Ao Oni chase theme (#125) because it scared me.
----------
thank you for all your hard work hosting this blog. question: has it been fun to discover so many songs through the blog? the level of variety is really cool. out of curiosity, how much of the music would you say you have personally already known before they were submitted?
Admin: I'd say I've probably only heard 5-10% of the songs submitted here before :'). But that just means that this blog is highly effective at helping me find new music!
----------
my favourite kind of results are what i like to call the penis results. it usually happens when "like it/first time hearing it" gets the lead while "like/sounds familiar" and "don't feel strongly" take like 10-12% each. are there any specific poll results that you've found particularly interesting for any reason
Admin: 1. I'm calling that phenomena penis results now and 2. #689, which has the highest 'Like and Familiar' result of any song at 49.60%. The average % for this category is 19.19%.
----------
Have you ever gotten a submission on this blog that you’re disappointed more people don’t know?
Admin: EVERY NIER SONG EVER!!!!!!!! GO PLAY NIER REPLICANT RIGHT NOW IT IS 60% OFF UNTIL MARCH 20TH.
----------
Do you have a series you expected to get a lot of requests for, but haven't?
Admin: There's surprisingly few Persona requests, which I expected to be more popular. There's also one song in particular (not from persona) that I'm surprised I haven't seen yet (not naming it, I don't want to invite inorganic submissions!)
----------
what is your favorite piece of music outside videogames?
Admin: This is hard because my favorites are pretty much always changing (other than the one song I listen to obsessively multiple times a day, of course) and I can never pick just one anyways... I think I'd have to go with (as of writing this) 'With All Its Complexities' by Kyoumeni from her album 'And Then I Woke Up.'

Ask Masterpost #6 -- 2/22/2025
This puts me completely up to date for all blog-related asks! Next week, I will begin answering the other types of asks I have received :).
Sorry if my answers this time are a little short and curt -- I sort of stressed myself out trying to give long explanations, which led me to NOT answering asks in a reasonably timely manner, and I realized I should probably save that effort for when I actually write up the rules proper. (Doing this does not annoy me and I appreciate all the asks regardless! So please do not feel like you're bothering me with any questions because of this.)
Summary:
Inquiry regarding out-of-service games / song length
Inquiry regarding links/song sources in submissions
Permissibility of mods and fanmade expansions (100% Allowed)
Permissibility / Further clarification on rhythm game songs
Permissibility of mobile game music (Allowed)
Permissibility of folk song covers (Allowed)
Inquiry regarding songs with multiple movements
Inquiry regarding songs that appear on the OST but not inside the game
Inquiry regarding reveal video links
Inquiry regarding circumstances of a specific remake
Permissibility of pop song covers (Allowed)
Permissibility of console menu songs (Allowed)
Inquiry regarding nameless submissions
----------
Can I submit a song from an MMO that’s been offline for a decade?
Related question: Can I submit a song that is 17 minutes long?
Yes and Yes -- But tumblr has a limit on the file size I can upload for both MP3 and MP4, so I might have to crop it regardless. You can add your recommended crop time to your submission if you feel it might be necessary.
----------
For the song I wanted to submit, the only good youtube link for it was taken down recently. So my options would be to send a youtube link for a version with inferior audio (which also uses a fanmade title rather than the official one), or a link to a google drive file that has the song in good quality. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. Any preference/suggestions as to what I should do?
You can send the google drive link and I'll download it from there if you prefer to have the best audio possible. I'd appreciate having the youtube link as well for the reveal, and then you can drop the google drive link in the comments to share with everyone (if you'd like) :).
----------
Do you take music from mods? If someone's made a soundtrack for a fan made game expansion?
Yes and yes.
----------
While I know submissions aren't open at the moment, I just want to ask so I can find a good submission for when they are, one of the rules states rhythm game songs that aren't EXCLUSIVELY video games songs won't be accepted. Would songs made specifically for a rhythm game count as a video game song in that regard? For example, a lot of songs in bemani games are made specifically for said game either by outside artists or the in-house sound teams.
A very generalized rule you can follow for rhythm games is: - If it's an idol/ensemble-cast/gacha rhythm game: No - If it's a regular rhythm game, such as rhythm heaven, dynamix, arcaea, any arcade game: Yes. This rule specifically exists to rule out submissions of songs from series like Love Live, Bandori, Ensemble Stars, IDOLISH7, etc.
----------
1: do you take song recs?
2: do you count mobile games?
3: Neko Atsume music
1. As far as I'm concerned, all submissions are song recs. 2. Yes 3. Yes
----------
@nutella-icecream asked:
Is it okay to submit the cover of a folk song that was included in a video game if I have the name of the person performing it?
Yes, covers made for the video game are alright.
----------
If a song consists of multiple movements that are technically separate tracks in-game (e.g. a multi-phase boss fight) should each movement be submitted separately or can the combined song be submitted?
What if an official soundtrack release includes both (individual tracks for each movement as well as a track combining them?)
You can specify the specific movement you'd like to submit or the entire song, and it doesn't matter to me if they're combined on the official OST or not :) (just let me know if you have a preferred crop time if they ARE combined). If it's something like a two-part boss fight with one song name, I'd just name it like "Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy (first phase)" and "Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy (second phase)". I would probably not post any of the movements individually if the full song had already been posted previously, but I would consider doing the opposite (posting the full song when only movements have been posted previously). This is highly dependent on the particular song.
----------
would a song that only appears in a trailer but is on the official ost count or nah
If it's on the official OST, it's alright.
----------
when revealing songs with in-game music videos (e.g. submissions from the beatmania iidx series), would you be linking an upload of the song with static album art, or one with the video as well?
I pick the youtube video for the reveal based almost entirely on what I think the most "stable" link might be -- links with more views, that's been on youtube for more time, or that's from the composers / other official channel. If they have an in-game music video you'd prefer for the reveal you're more than welcome to indicate that on the submission.
----------
@jadevampvm-blog asked:
Okay, I have a question about the submission rules. I have a particular song that was a remix made after the publishing of the game, but was never actually in any of the games. Now, there's a remake of the game coming out and the song is in the trailer. In the event that you open submissions before the remake is out, would I be allowed to submit this song?
I think that's okay in this specific scenario :)
----------
are video-game specific covers of non-vg covers allowed? for example, Bioshock Infinite has a barbershop quartet sing God Only Knows, a calliope organ(?) rendition of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, and a couple of other 1912 covers of iconic pop songs
also, i wanted to point out that you sometimes (including in the information masterpost) use the tag #not a vg music poll and sometimes use #not a vgmusic poll and the inconsistency of the space in the tags makes finding those posts awkward
Yes, this is totally okay. Also thank you for letting me know about the tags! I try to keep them consistent but I forget sometimes LOL. I don't know why I haven't made an xkit shortcut for it yet.
----------
@moonlitstargazer asked:
are songs from console menus allowed? (e.g. Settings - Nintendo 3DS, Wii Shop Channel, PlayStation Home Menu, etc.)
Yes, because... I think they're deeply iconic to the overall video game scene in general. I may reserve them for special posting days, though.
----------
@lonepower asked:
Ok, so I know that songs which are on an in-game soundtrack but not released as part of the OST are allowed, but (when the time comes) what should I do about a song that plays in-game but isn't on the OST, doesn't have a title in the game files (it's just numbers), and isn't on youtube? I can credit the composer because it's the game composer, but should I just submit it as "untitled [game area] theme", should I make up a title, or would it just not be allowed?
That's definitely allowed :). You can just describe the song the best of your ability or use a commonly attributed name in the fandom or something. I would probably go with something like "[character or area name] theme" or "Song that plays during [chapter/cutscene/moment/fight]". Even just the numbers would be alright.

Ask Masterpost 11/28/2024
I will be answering all the BLOG RELATED asks I have received since opening my inbox here :). Sorry for taking so long to make a second one!
Do songs used during a cutscene count?
Absolutely :)
Hi, I hope you are doing well! I have a question if you dont mind answering. I had submitted a song while submissions were open and I didn't really think about the 'songs have to be released in some official capacity' too hard until after I submitted it. The music IS officially released but because its an obscure jrpg from like... 2002, the official release of it was a cd exclusive to Japan when the game came out. Does that still count?
If the game itself is released for the public to play (regardless of how obscure), I count that as officially released. That rule is only meant to prevent people from submitting leaks or datamines or the like.
Not sure if it's the indie game anon is talking about, but one indie game that has a bunch of non-bespoke music that people may not realize is the case is Corn Kidz 64: basically most of the songs are preexisting songs that were on sites like modarchive (many of which date back to the 00s and one of which dates back to the 90s), which means that a decent chunk of the OST is off-limits by the blog's rules. Now one thing the game does is do the Banjo-Kazooie type thing of having songs shift arrangements depending on where in the level you are, and said arrangements were done by the game's dev (plus one minor song done by the dev themselves) basically going by how the tracks are numbered on the soundtrack (here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2844830/Corn_Kidz_64_Soundtrack/), the off-limits songs would be 1-3, 5-6, 14-16, 18, 20, and 22; while the songs that would be fine would be 4, 7-13, 17, 19, and 21
Not a question but I'm publishing in case the relevant person(s) want to see it.
i've read the ask masterpost and saw a question regarding alt versions of songs but there's a specific case i'd still like to specify: what about beta/unused versions? do they have to be included in the final shipped product in some way (either put in the game as bonus content or included in the soundtrack releases)?
Unless the beta/unused versions are included in the ways you described (bonus content or included in soundtrack releases) and anything similar, please don't submit them -- They're not the intended public product, even if they are interesting.
are normal non-idol gacha rhythm games fine? like, the ones you'll find in arcades?
Absolutely! I only use idol gacha games as an example, though, because the songs in them are not specifically produced to be VGM. Any BGM or songs made for the idol gacha game (any song that's not a beatmap, essentially) is allowed.
are original songs from anime fangames allowed? I remember sending one back a long time ago and wanted to know if it counted
Yes, original compositions for fangames are allowed. I think I clarified this before but I will again just in case.
Hey, I'm curious, are tracks with lyrics allowed to be submitted? Just asking for later submissions, of course!
Absolutely, I just can't guarantee I'll link a lyric video when the song is revealed (I try to pick links that won't be copyright stricken/are from official sources)

Ask Masterpost 10/12/2024
I will be answering all the BLOG RELATED asks I have received since opening my inbox here :). Going forward, this is how all asks will be answered (if they are not time dependent or something). I will make a new post with new asks every saturday.
my friends and i have been including youtube links in our submissions. is that helpful or annoying?
It's helpful! Thank you :)
-----
Have you gotten a lot of repeat submissions? Like, songs requested by multiple people? If so, what’s the most requests you’ve gotten for a single song? (You don’t need to say what song it is if it’s one you haven’t posted yet)
I don't remember the name, but I've received a song from 'In Stars and Time' about seven times now
-----
I submitted a song from an indie game listing the author as the composer, but then I realised that's not exactly true, as all the music in the game is from a public free gallery. because of that, there's no official upload on youtube. would that still be ok? p.s. thank you for your work, I've come to really love this blog and i look forward to the new polls every day 💕
I'm going to say no, even though the song is in a video game it's not technically intended for the video game itself. I'm curious as to what game this is though.
-----
@kaerran said: Speaking of which: I avoided submitting a game earlier because the only versions I found on a quick search were entire-soundtrack-as-one-video and I wanted to make things easier on you. Is it okay if I submit my mid-90s games even if they don't have nice convenient Youtube links?
Of course that's okay, I'll find a way to work around it even if I have to crop the specific song out myself.

Say a song that's made for a game and is in said game gets an official release of an alternative version that *isn't* in a game. (Ex: an extended version or a version with vocals) I assume that the in-game version of the song is acceptable, while an alternative version that isn't in any games are not. Asking because I've already submitted a couple in-game versions of songs that have official extended/vocal versions that aren't in-game.
Both are acceptable, for two reasons:
It's an official, original release/remix, presumably on an official album, for a video game, so it is technically a form of VGM even if it's not in the video game itself
I wouldn't be allowed to post the official NieR remix albums if I excluded these types of songs
-----
@moonlight-fox said: Hey. Question for when you reopen submissions - For songs that have lyrics, do you want the name of the lead vocalist as well as the composer, or just the composer?
If you know both, feel free to include both! Specifying would help a ton as well. Submitting the artists is optional as I'll almost always go verify it myself but it is very much appreciated.
-----
are there any games with more notable soundtracks that you're surprised HAVEN'T been submitted yet (if any)?
As of writing this, I haven't seen a single song from Persona 5.
-----
Hi, love the blog! Is there any way you could tag similar series? Like, tagging all the soulsborne games with a from software tag, that sort of thing? If not, it’s cool, I would just find it useful. Have a great day, keep up the awesome work! <3
I started doing this when I saw this ask, I hope the way I've categorized things is good so far! If anyone has any suggestions for further categorization feel free to send them in my asks (within reason, lol)
-----
can you put the number of the song in the anonymized title? would help us keep track of which song we're listening to if we're also scrolling
I also started doing this as soon as I saw this ask, thank you for the excellent idea.
-----
Are songs from live-service video games that have ended service permitted? I'm guessing that the answer is yes because I think I saw Dragalia Lost here but I just wanted to be sure before preparing songs to submit next month. Also, I noticed in your pinned post that it still says "submissions are always allowed" - since the rules are different now, you might wanna change that just in case some ppl get confused :3
Yes, songs from live service games that have ended are permitted :) (provided I can access the songs somehow of course)
-----
are we allowed to submit official live versions of video game songs? does its availability online matter (like how the splatoon concerts were officially uploaded, but the kirby 30th anniversary concert was only livestreamed once and has to be pirated now)?
If it's on an official album, I'm going to say yes. So no to the kirby concert -- but if the splatoon songs are on an album, they're allowed.
-----
i cant find if youve answered something like this already, but whats the verdict for songs thatare in video games, but werent made for them? like for example the inclusion of pre-existing low roar songs in death stranding.
As of now, I'll only accept songs that were intentionally made to be included in the OST/album/music of a video game series -- so no preexisting non-VGM songs or anything like that.
-----
out of interest, how far along the submission queue has been posted? when were the most recent posted songs submitted?
3.8% of the entire submissions I have received have been posted. Everything in active vote right now was submitted in July, hence the need to severely restrict submissions...
-----
are we allowed to ask if certain games/series are in the queue? because i cannot for the life of me remember if i submitted something a while ago and dont want to accidentally send it again when submissions reopen ^_^;
You can DM me for this as to not publicly post any spoilers :')
-----
@disgustedorite said: Um, when were the most recent songs submitted? I submitted a batch a while back when submissions were open and there's been no sign of any of them...I hope Tumblr didn't eat it @_@
Tumblr may have eaten it, but it's probably just as likely that I got a million gazillion submissions ahead of you :')
-----
genuine question did someone submit the entire destiny franchise at once or is it that popular and i just never see anything about it
Yes, in the very early days of this blog -- about the tenth submission -- someone submitted ~30 destiny songs.
-----
Do you accept music from mods? I mean, obviously you dont accept anything right now, but ykwim
Yes, as long as it's an original composition/remix :)
-----
@woolooism said: has any song won with any of the "i don't like it" results? if no, which one has the biggest relative percentage of it?
I'll have to check, but I think (off the top of my head) the song with the most "I don't like it" results is the Ao Oni chase theme
Edit: Apparently, it is actually this song from Lisa the Joyful!
-----
@violetsquare111 said: i'm curious, do you know when exactly the currently-running polls were submitted? curious just how far off mine are lol. (but i would guess mine are still a few months out based on the insane number of submissions you shared. 3000... oh god...)
July, so... yours are far off :')
-----
Do songs created for an event in a community engine driven rhythm game (i.e. original songs for custom charts in a rhythm game/community driven game engine) count for submissions? If so, how will they be counted?
I think I'm going to need an example of this scenario because this seems REALLY highly specific, haha
-----
A suggestion. When a song has lyrics, use a video that shows the lyrics in the reveal post. Please and thank you.
I'll do my best, but these aren't always the easiest to find, and I try to use songs from official sources as much as possible to prevent the risk of the video getting copyright stricken off the playlist.
-----
@only-blogging-2-save-rock-n-roll said: Would you ever consider doing joke polls for April fools day? Stuff like those MIDI remakes of song from Franchise A in the style of Franchise B
Probably not, only because it's not an official remix. I may post funny songs depending on submissions.
-----
would you be willing to maybe make a tag for just the polls, even if they're already over? i like going through them all without knowing what game they're from and i also dont keep super on top of checking this blog for new polls. thanks!!
There is one! It's #closed vote :)
-----
@sparrow-va said: Hi! I've had the hare-brained idea of possibly making some Youtube vids of listening to & reacting/trying to identify songs from this blog starting from the oldest submissions for my channel (LaserBearCat Gaming), is that something you'd be okay with? Obvs we would credit & link your blog for the source of the tracks c:
Go right ahead!
-----
I noticed the rules about submission has changed to one song per period per person, which I can totally understand given the amount and when trying to keep a fair chance for everyone will this rule be applied retrospectively too? just wondering because I had been submitting more than one song and just would like to know if I'd need to submit them again one per month now if I would like them to be considered as a submission eventually Also thanks for running this blog it's become one of my favourites and I check it out almost daily
No, It's not going to be applied retroactively -- I don't even know if I'd be able to enforce that because the sheet doesn't record who submitted what (right now).

no rush on answering this bc i know requests wont be open for a hot minute, but i have a question if u dont mind!
are songs from friday night funkin mods allowed? and if so, would it be the same as rhythm heaven songs, where you said just an instrumental should be submitted since the "vocals" are pretty distinct? thank u!! :]
Yes, they're allowed as long as you can credit the original creators and the mod is/was publicly playable in some capacity, not just existing as a youtube video. It's okay to have the vocals as well if you'd like! I think I misunderstood the rhythm heaven case (I thought it would be the menu music that plays after you complete the song/level, not the sfx that plays DURING the song) and will clarify that accordingly.
----------
What's the verdict on songs from games like Lego Batman? Where the music is at least partially based on (if not entirely the same as) music from films or television?
Totally fine if they're created or remixed for the video game, but I'm going to say no if they weren't originally made for the video game.
----------
@cloudyskies4 asked: if a song is fanmade but ended up getting used officially in a kinda fanmade modernization how would the source for that be handled?
I think this is HIGHLY situational and I would probably need to know the exact song this is referring to. Overall, I'm inclined to say no, because it wasn't an original composition for the game (by the team behind the game, that is).

is music that was licensed for use in video games allowed? like if some rock song from the 80s was used in a game that came out in 2010. pretty sure it's a no on that front, but i wanted to double check. thank you!
No, because it wasn't composed for the game itself. Appreciate you double checking though! (I'm assuming this is referring to songs that are unchanged when included in the video game and not 'xyz franchise song remixed for xyz franchise video game' sort of thing)

I probably won't do anything for april fools simply because I don't really care for it :'). Thank you for enjoying the blog so much!!!

[Any ask that's correcting me on an incorrect credit for a song]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE. SERIOUSLY. If you put them in the notes it might be a hit or miss if I see them but if you send me an ask I WILL SEE IT and I WILL CORRECT IT IMMEDIATELY. Proper attribution is important to me and I appreciate everyone who helps me stick to that! This isn't an ask, but I wanted to address it anyways.
----------
might be a silly question but are scrapped video game songs allowed? i know submissions are closed, im just asking so that i dont send something thats not allowed when submissions open :]
I'm going to say no, just because they were scrapped and therefore not intended for the final product :'). No such thing as a silly question!
----------
If the game hasn't been released yet, but a song from the game *has* been officially posted by the devs beforehand, is that okay to submit? I figured it's a yes but I just wanted to be extra sure for when Jan 1st submissions roll around :)

Information Master Post
Another song poll blog inspired by @doyoulikethisanimesong-poll and @doyoulikethissong-poll, but specifically for video game music. If you're not familiar with this type of blog, a song is posted without any of the identifying information attached to a poll intended to gauge a blind reaction from the audience/following. The song is then revealed after the conclusion of the poll. For everyone's sake, please try not to reveal the identity of the song in the reblogs/comments if you know what it is. You are more than welcome to reveal it in your own tags or using ciphers!
This blog will post FIVE POLLS a day (16:00 GMT) and FIVE REVEALS a day (19:00 GMT) save for extenuating circumstances (i.e missed reveals)
This page is a bit under construction and will be updated (3/4/2024).

Mod Rae here! Tumblr doesn't let me nicely and neatly edit Admin's posts to add in commentary because [rambling rant about the back end of shared accounts and the way page membership works] Functional Webbed Site, so!
Sonic CD question:
Rae: I've never actually listened to either because I am a Fake Ass Sonic Fan, but I concur that having MORE Sonic CD music always sounds good to me!
Console family question:
Rae: Hmmm, that's a tough one. Playstation is the console family I have the most history with and has a lot of games I am Very Attached To (especially with my getting into weird PS2 games) but I do love my DS and Switch..... Playstation, maybe?
Yoko Shimomura thoughts:
Rae: Absolute queen and icon of gaming music, I was actually mostly only familiar with her KH stuff and knowing she had an illustrious career well before that prior to this blog, so seeing more things she's worked on has been great!
Fave FFXIV Villain:
Rae: Ough..... I'm wracking through my brain going "is there anyone who beats the obvious basic bitch answer......" but I think I have to concede that I am an EXTREMELY basic bitch and I think nobody does it quite like Emet-Selch. He's a tired old man, he's a theatre kid, he's deeply traumatised, he's genocidal, he spends half of Shadowbringers just hanging around with you for funsies, he shoots a wizard with a gun (he is also a wizard)... Character of all time.
Nerdcore videogame songs:
Rae: I don't get the final say on submissions, ofc, but I err on the side of "submissions need to be songs from videogames or else an arrangement thereof", whereas the Miracle of Sound et al songs I've heard tend towards wholly original "fansongs". I think there are some cool songs within the genre, though I rarely deliberately look for them!
Blog-related fulfilment:
Rae: I feel like this one was aimed more at Admin, since I mostly jumped on as a Devoted Fan Who Wanted To Do His Part! I've been getting a lot of joy out of learning more about music in various games and the people who make it, though. I think ULTRAKILL has been the standout for "game I knew basically nothing about to Oh Fuck Hello??" from this blog, although special mention to #626, Dark Riders from Star Stable Online because I'm still not over it WHAT THE FUCK????
Favourite kind of bread:
Rae: The sappy answer is "my housemate makes bread and it's really nice, I really like it :)" but more generally, I'm a slut for brioche.
Least favourite song:
Rae: Oh man that's a great question, I'm actually having to think on it. Easy answer is "also Ao Oni Chase Theme" but I already knew that one, it's like evil nostalgia. I'm sure there's something but alas, I have a memory like a sieve. I tend to find if I dislike something it's for weirdly nitpicky things like flat vocals or timing feeling off?
Discovering music:
Rae: I'm about the same as Admin, I've heard shockingly little of the music submitted! Especially so for series a lot of people know, like Kirby or various Mario games or, like, Minecraft!
Penis + Interesting results:
Rae: Penis poll is one of my favourite Tumblr terms, it delights me every time. True penis music honestly. Honestly, I always find it interesting when there's a very close and extreme split between two results -- #218, 666 Kill Chop Deluxe from LISA: The Joyful is the most notable example, but there are a few and I always like seeing them.
Submission more people should know:
Rae: Concurring with NieR, especially Replicant my beloved. It has Kaine!! Do it for her!! Independently, I could say I'm disappointed by how low recognition numbers were for #441, Giselle or #845, Cicio from The House in Fata Morgana but in truth I'm just happy to be here. Maybe with enough rizz (going PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE in notes) I can get that Like and Know up to double digits one day......
Expected more requests:
Rae: I'm possibly a little biased in my viewpoint but I'm surprised by the fact that the Fate series has so few submissions. Fewer than comparable VN series I thought were less popular in the West/on Tumblr-- okay actually, I need to comment on this because it keeps making me laugh, WHO SUBMITTED ALL THESE TRACKS FROM RANCE??? Don't actually answer that, I'm just delighted and bewildered by the fact we've apparently attracted like all ten Rance stans on Tumblr??? Anyway, there's barely any Fate here and that's wild to me.
Favourite non-VGM music:
Rae: God, choosing an individual piece is quite difficult but I think my gut choice for my favourite song is "Unknown Mother Goose" by wowaka, both the original Miku version and the hitorie version. It's either that or something by The Hoosiers, I think.

Mod Rae addendum to 6 (tl;dr, thanks for corrections, good god VGM accreditation is a nightmare):
Turning into that crying emoji that dissolves into dust wondering which musicians I've failed regarding incorrect credits on reveals. On a serious note, thank you for any corrections sent in. Echoing Admin, correct accreditation is really important to me.
To give a little behind the scenes, I'd say that 80% of the time I spend sorting out reveals is spent on researching who the artists are. Some are really easy (I wonder who made any given Undertale or Supergiant song [/glib]), whereas for others I've gone on half hour quests scouring VGMdb, wikis, Reddit threads and so on.
One thing this role has made me acutely aware of is how DIFFICULT this is, because there are a lot of games where the credit is simply "Company Sound Team" or a list of every composer who worked on the game. Like, I knew before starting work on this blog that videogame music is poorly attributed but Good God. Unfortunately, there's only so far I can get with internet searches, because I'm relying on information from other people about games I'm usually unfamiliar with and having to trust the Splatoon wiki is right or whatever.
