Norway receives last U.S. Poseidon submarine hunting aircraft

The Royal Norwegian Air Force received its last P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft when landing in Norway on May 27.

While 'Munin' - as the fuselage was officially named - is the last of the five units that Boeing will deliver to Norway under a $1.2 billion contract from 2017, it is the third to arrive in Norway.

The remaining two Poseidon submarine hunter planes will be at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, and will arrive in Norway in 2023.

Vingtor, the first of five units was delivered in December 2021, while Viking was the first to arrive in Norway in February this year, followed by Ulabrand. Hugin and Vingtor are the two remaining cells in Florida. All aircraft names have their origins in Norse mythology.

The five P-8As will replace the current fleet of six P-3 Orions and two DA-20 Jet Falcons from Norway, with the new fuselages expected to take over the tasks of their predecessors in 2023.

The P-8A is a long-range anti-submarine and anti-surface warplane developed for the U.S. Navy. As a modified derivative of the Boeing 737-800ERX commercial version, it is militarized with maritime weapons, an open mission system architecture and commercial support for accessibility. The aircraft is modified to include a bomb compartment and weapons hangers. It has two weapon stations on each wing and can carry soundproofs. The Poseidon is also equipped with an in-flight refueling system.

All Poseidons from Norway will be operated by Royal Norwegian Air Force Squadron 333 from the Evenes air station.

[So this is my excuse to shill Twilight of the Thunder God. Three different versions.

The Corvus Corax one is the most unique and it’s the one that gets stuck in my head the most. The original version by Amon Amarth has a special place in my heart due to nostalgia reasons. My mum was a fan of theirs and played the album a LOT when I was very young. 

And the Sabaton version just sounds really cool.]

Here are some photos of one of my late repair. It's a very old man : a Vingtor Rock Super. I didn't find many informations on that brand. It seems that Vingtor was a norwegian company of the sixties, building hi-fi amps and guitar amps. That old transistor amp is probably from the mid-sixties.

I took the time to draw all the complete schematic in case someone of the internet needs it. I can't guarantee it's 100% accurate but I did my best. I'll post here soon.

Norway receives its first Boeing P-8A Poseidon

The Norwegian Defense Material Agency (NDMA) received the first of five Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft at a ceremony on November 18.

The Poseidons will be operated by Royal Norwegian Air Force Squadron 333 (RNoAF) at Evenes Air Station, and will replace the current fleet of six P-3 Orions and two DA-20 Falcon Jets.

Although the first aircraft was delivered to the United States, it will not arrive in Norway before February 2022. Norway expects the P-8A to start taking over the tasks of the Orions in 2023.

“Norway is responsible for large maritime areas in a strategically important part of the world, and the new P-8A Poseidon will represent a tremendous improvement in our ability to protect our sovereignty and understand developments in these areas. Today's delivery of our first P-8A is an important milestone in modernizing the capacity of Norway's maritime patrol aircraft," said Mette Sørfonden, general director of the Norwegian Defense Materials Agency.

Norway's first P-8A aircraft, called Vingtor, was delivered to NDMA during a ceremony at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. The milestone occurs four years after the NDMA signed an agreement with the United States Navy for the P-8A, and two years before the new aircraft began to assume maritime patrol functions in the far north of Norway.

“We are honored to provide this unparalleled multimission maritime patrol capability for Norway,” said Stu Voboril, vice president and manager of the P-8 program. “Norway joins seven other global customers who have chosen or already operate the P-8 and benefit greatly from its long-range maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare capabilities. We hope to improve our ongoing and lasting partnership with the United States Navy and the Royal Norwegian Air Force, and support the maintenance and training needs of the future fleet.”

The remaining four aircraft from Norway are all in advanced stages of production and will be delivered to NDMA in 2022.

Norwegian companies Nammo, Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace, Andoya Space and Berget currently have agreements with Boeing that are part of an industrial cooperation plan related to Norway's acquisition of five P-8A aircraft.

The delivery to Norway also marks the 142nd P-8 aircraft delivered to global customers, including the U.S. Navy, the Royal Australian Air Force, the Indian Navy and the Royal UK Air Force. The first deliveries to New Zealand, Korea and Germany will take place in 2022, 2023 and 2024, respectively.
