Lyla's Intro

"Did you know music helps your plants grow? I wouldn't have believed it myself if I Professor Crewel didn't give us that assignment. The human world sure is fascinating!"

Introducing Lyla, a mermaid who was recruited by the Dark Mirror itself to attend NRC! Rather than being born from the Coral Sea like most merfolk, Lyla was born from the waters by Sunshine Lands where the mermaids help humankind and vice versa. She's excited to learn about human culture, and even more excited to make all sorts of friends! Let's just hope the students don't exploit her kindness for their personal gain.

Here's a bit of info about her!

Nicknames: Lyra(Kalim), Lulu(Ace, Cater, and Floyd), Angel Fish(Leech Twins), Sea Lily(Azul), Sea Star(Deuce)

Personality: At first glance, people might think of Lyla as any other mermaid. She was sweet, kind, and had the voice of an angel. She’s very curious of the world around her, wants to bring out the good in everyone, and wants to lend out a helping hand. They might also assume she is naive when it comes to life on the surface, but her smarts is how people figure out she’s not like any other mermaid.

While Lyla isn’t as smart as some of the students like Riddle or Azul, she comes pretty close. With her amazing memory, she loves talking about the things she learned and sprinkling facts within conversations. However, this could make some of the other students see her as a teacher’s pet or even annoying. While Lyla is smart in the knowledgeable sense, she has the terrible tendency to be overtrusting to people and not seeing when she’s being used. She likes seeing the good in everyone, so she assumed they wouldn’t lie to her or lead her disarray. If she ever found out people took advantage of her kindness, she would be extremely upset.

Backstory: Lyla was born from the waters in Sunshine Lands. While mermaids once lived in secret, they now share a harmonious life with the surface dwellers. Each mermaid had a role to play, and her parents were no different. Her father would guide sailors home, saving drowning victims, and monitoring the weather chances, while her mother shared mermaid knowledge to the humans and performing ocean inspired dances and music. Besides entertaining the young human kids, she eventually got her own role when she got older, which was retrieving lost items that were either taken away from the tides or dropped into the ocean. She eventually learned her UM on whim, where she healed a little boy's cut when a crab pinched his finger.

As Lyla grew older, she became one of the smartest students in her grade and had a better understanding of her UM and the limitations she has. She also discovered she had water magic, which she would show off when she was joining her mother with entertaining the locals. One of her shows caught the headmage's attention, who then offered her to be enrolled into NRC when the Dark Mirror picked her to be one of the candidates. He would even personally pay for her to go through the Mermaid Boot Camp so she can learn how to move and act like a human before she enrolled into the college. While Lyla's parents were angry that she agreed to go without having their input, they allowed their daughter to go to NRC. However, they did give her a warning. Not everyone is as nice as the humans on Sunshine Lands were, so she needs to be careful on who she becomes friends with. They also remind her to stick with her morals, and to never let anyone take advantage of her sweet nature. You could argue that Lyla's excitement blinded her from part of her parents' warning, but she had no idea what she got herself into.

Fun facts:

Lyla is paired up with either Azul or Deuce. In a different universe, she's paired up with Viridis Ashengrotto; who's owned by @kokii-omii

Lyla is in two clubs! During her freshman year, she joined the Ballet Club, which was founded by her literature teacher, Odette Siegfried the Third(She's a facility OC that I'm going to make later on). During her sophomore; and current, year, Lyla also joined the Pop Music Club.

Lyla works at Monstro Cafe as a waitress and an entertainer. She worked there without getting paid during her entire freshman year and a couple of months into her sophomore/current year(since she merely wanted to help Azul out and she didn't care about getting paid at the time.) After her overblot, Lyla quits. However, she soon gets back her job in the middle of book 5, and Azul starts paying her.

Speaking of overblot, Lyla does overblot right after Azul's overblot due to Azul, the Leech Twins, Ace, and some of the other students admit that they were taking advantage over Lyla's kindness. She ends up staying behind during winter break because of her injuries, but she separated herself from most of the students of the Octavinelle Dorm. She eventually forgives them during Book 5.

While Cater bought her first phone, Lyla gets the hang of it since she saw humans on their phones all the time near her homeland.

A side effect of the potion Lyla drinks to stay human is that her mermaid ears doesn't go away.

Lyla always has her seashell purse on her person. Besides using it to hold her phone, she uses it to hold any seashells she finds.

On her nightstand table, she has a corkboard with photos of her and her friends.

Lyla isn't twisted from anything. I just wanted to make a mermaid OC. But her design; and backstory, apparently, was inspired by Sangonomiya Kokomi from Genshin Impact

yes they have and nobody has noticed because Reese can mimic Alfred's voice and mannerisms very well and vice versa

the only person to ever figure out who is who, is Viri

They can't fool Viri and it makes them a little upset that he always knows no matter how well they imitate each other

Kalim once took Viri out for a ride on his magic carpet, Viri's still not great at flying so he was clinging to Kalim like a koala, and he was holding him so hard that Kalim couldn't steer and ended up having the both of them crash landing in scarabia's fountain

Viri loves the water and Kalim's UM allows him to make a large amount of water

they once painted each other and Viri made an absolutely gorgeous painting of kalim, and then there was kalim's painting- lets just say an attempt was made

kalim's the only person that can barge into Viri's studio unannounced, if Jamil's with him then he has to wait outside cuz he's not invited
