5 things you should know about Xiamen tea culture

Tea Culture is a treasure of China, especially in South China places like Xiamen, Fujian. For centuries, Xiamen locals have been addicted to the tea and developed a profound and unique tea culture.
In order to promote Xiamen tea culture, @visitxiamen has launched the online campaign #Xiamenteabreak, showing the different aspects of Xiamen tea culture, introducing the authentic Xiamen tea culture to the world, and encouraging participants from different tea cultures to share their own tea-drinking habits.
Now, we invite you to stay with #Xiamenteabreak, to dig more interesting and deep contents of Xiamen tea culture. Here are five things you should know about Xiamen tea culture:

First, Xiamen is the very FIRST PORT for tea export of China. The tea export history in Xiamen could be dated back to more than thousands of years ago. Today, the tea export volume of Xiamen alone exceeds seven thousand tons a year.

Second, the word for tea leaves or tea in many countries are derivatives of the Chinese character “cha(茶).” The English word “tea” sounds very similar to the Xiamen dialect of “cha”. This fact of the derivation of languages, indirectly, proves the first statement that Xiamen is the very first port doing tea export business.

Third, Xiamen locals are used to drinking Oolong tea—a semi-fermented Chinese tea. Among a great variety of Oolong teas, Wuyi Yancha(Wuyi Rock Tea) and Anxi Teiguanyin (Anxi Iron Goddess of Mercy) are the most commonly consumed tea types in Xiamen.

Forth, Xiamen locals are addicted to tea. They enjoyed a cup of tea on all occasions: to wake up in the morning, to accompany all meals, to celebrate special moments, to serve guests, to do business, and of course to quench thirst. A popular proverb among them says, “Rather go without salt for three days than without tea for a single day.”

Fifth, for centuries, Xiameners drink tea and therefore they develop a unique tea-tasting culture called Gongfu Cha (Tea). Some people think the discipline or ceremony of Gongfu Cha is very complicated and unpractical. That’s not true. Gongfu Cha is not like those shows in some commercial occasions; the authentic Gongfu Cha is the art of serving tea and the way Xiamen people connecting with nature.

My mother was so excited today when it finally stopped raining and we got to go out and really explore the streets of Xiamen, China. Before we arrived here a few days ago (after a few stressful days of travel), I knew almost nothing about the city except that it was relatively warm in the winter, and that it had made a big impression on my mother. She had spent time here as a child in a military family that moved around a lot, and returned often in the years that followed, especially in her teenage years when she lived here with her family. She couldn't wait to show her daughter and her granddaughter around one of her favorite cities. . It's changed a lot since she was last here in the 70s, so it was a new experience for her as well. Lisa's favorite part was the street in this picture, decorated with many cats. I hope that when Lisa grows up I can have the joy of taking her (and maybe my own granddaughter) to see a place that filled me with wonderful memories. . On jakeanddannie.com (link in profile) Jake just published his monthly income report for our blog. In December we had our first profitable month! Go read all about it! . . . . #xiamen #china #visitxiamen #lanterns #catstreet #familytravel #digitalnomad #digitalnomads #digitalnomadfamily #littlenomad #travelwithkids #neverstopexploring #bringthekids #kidsonthego #babycantravel #wearetravelmums #letsgoeverywhere #havebabywilltravel #takeyourkidseverywhere #clickinmoms #capturingmotherhood #kidstravel #toddlertravel — view on Instagram http://bit.ly/2mhZiQL
