¿Por qué te apuntaste a Startups Mansion?

Desde Visualfy lo vimos como una oportunidad genial para poder aprender del ecosistema Startup de New York, para compartir conocimientos con otros emprendedores y para ayudarnos mutuamente en el desarrollo de nuestros proyectos, ya que éramos perfiles muy diferentes que nos podíamos compenetrar entre sí. Pero también es cierto que nos apuntamos con cierta incertidumbre de que pasaría, como sería la convivencia y si realmente le sacaríamos el partido que nosotros pensábamos. Y si echamos la vista atrás volvería a repetir la experiencia sin ningún tipo de duda.

¿Lo recomiendas? ¿Por qué?

Lo recomiendo encarecidamente porque todas las incertidumbres que teníamos se convirtieron en aprendizaje personal y profesional. El compartir vida con otros emprendedores que piensan como tu es maravilloso, evidentemente la convivencia en ocasiones no es sencilla, pero esto hace que también aprendas a gestionar gente y luego nos ha venido muy bien a la hora de aumentar la plantilla. 

Por otro lado, la comunidad que se ha creado a posterior entre nosotros, sigue activa después de 6 años, nos compartimos información relevante, nos pedimos opinión o valoración unos a otros, e incluso nos felicitamos los cumpleaños jeje. Hoy en día, somos mucho más que compañeros de programa. Pero no solo nos enriqueció personalmente, a nivel profesional tuvimos la oportunidad de conocer un ecosistema muy diferente al Español, aprender de diversos mentores, asistir a multitud de eventos interesantes y a nosotros en particular, nos transmitió una ambición positiva que nos ayudó a pensar en global desde el inicio.

¿Cómo crees que ha influido Startups Mansion tras estos años en tu proyecto y/o desarrollo personal?

Para mi Startup Mansion fue un antes y un después en mi vida personal y profesional. El estar en un país diferente, con otro idioma y otras culturas, hace que mires las cosas desde nuevos puntos de vista. Me ayudó a perder el miedo, a confiar más en mi mismo y en el equipo que me rodea y por supuesto, el eco mediático que tuvo la experiencia, nos facilitó contactos aquí en España que nos ayudaron a crecer y a consolidar nuestro Proyecto. Hoy en día, hemos pasado de ser dos emprendedores a un equipo de 20 profesionales altamente cualificados y muy comprometidos con el proyecto.

¿Qué piensas de que el próximo se haga en Bali y esté más orientado a Nómadas Digitales?

Tengo que reconocer que una de las cosas que más me atrajo de Startups Mansion fue que era un formato diferente, en el que 40 personas distintas convivíamos bajo un mismo techo día y noche. Esto nos ayudó a entender que la diversidad humana es genial y por eso queremos mostrarla a personas que aún no lo saben. Porque se están perdiendo mucho. Startup Mansion nos ayudó a fijar nuestra visión: Llegar a ser la marca de Inteligencia Artificial que conecta ambos mundos, oyentes y sordos, dejando que las personas sean solo eso, PERSONAS. Mostrando al mundo el poder de la diversidad.

Sin embargo, en Bali esta pata de convivencia no está tan arraigada, ya que la gente se aloja en un hotel, pero al tratarse de nómadas digitales entiendo que será gente extremadamente sociable y acostumbrada a conocer nuevos sitios y culturas, por lo que facilitará que se cree un ambiente similar al vivido en New York.

Esta nueva edición, tendrá lugar por primera vez, en la isla de Bali, enfocada en nómadas digitales y emprendedores que trabajan en remoto. Durante un mes, los 20 participantes, convivirán en un hotel de Bali.

Desde StartupsMansion Nueva York, los tres fundadores: Pascual Aparicio, miembro del equipo de StartupBus y xSpain; Ignacio Hojas, fundador de 10entrepreneurs y Carlos de Ory, fundador de Happy Low Cost y Groupifly, han continuado trabajando con emprendedores. El programa busca generar un grupo de participantes que se apoyen unos a otros compartiendo experiencias y propuestas, apoyados por emprendedores y profesionales que desarrollan su actividad en Bali. También contarán con sesiones de trabajo en técnicas de adquisición de usuarios, marketing, gestión de negocio, etc… y podrán crear o implementar su proyecto apoyados por mentores y advisors locales e internacionales que viven en Bali, o que les visitarán ex profeso.

Manel started performing aerial acrobatics in 2008. He has also hosted integration workshops for deaf and hearing children, bringing them together through circus techniques. His passion for making the world more accessible led him to co-found Visualfy, an app for deaf people that translates sounds into visual and sensory alerts.

We caught up with Manel in the small Spanish town of Benissanó, where he runs his tech startup:

When and why did you get involved with technology? I got into tech through my long-time friend and co-founder Angel Albiach. We both ran an association that brings together deaf and hearing people through circus arts. Angel cannot live without tech and slowly he made me fall in love with it and its potential too, so we decided to combine his expertise in tech and my business vision to build a team that drives social impact through tech.

Why did you decide to set up your company in Benissanó? Benissanó is a small village near Valencia (Spain), with a population of under 2,000 people. I grew up here, playing around one of the best kept medieval castles in Spain, as my grandparents were the housekeepers. It’s an unexpected place to be running a tech startup but I just feel inspired here, it’s quiet, the air is clean and nights are starry; and there’s top talent to hire, who want to make an impact whilst keeping this lifestyle.

How did you come up with the idea for the app? I had been working with deaf people for more than seven years. One day in a meeting my smartphone vibrated and one deaf person told me someone was calling me. Without looking at the screen I told him it was a text message not a phone call, and explained to him that I use different sounds for different notifications. That was the moment when we decided to create our first app.

What has been your experience with Android & Google Play? Android’s openness allows us to create features that are just not possible on other mobile platforms, so we can deliver a much better experience for our users. The wide variety of devices with affordable prices, not just on smartphones but also on wearables with Wear OS, helps us reach more people and have a bigger impact.

How has your app business grown since you started? Within five months of launching the app and without spending a single euro, we had more than 5,000 downloads in 122 countries. For the past three years we have been creating a hardware solution that works with our app to improve the quality of life and home safety for people with hearing loss. Our team of professionals is now 22 people strong; we work hard every day to make the world a more accessible place.
