LOOK AT HISTORY FOR WORLDBUILDING INSPIRATION!

You may have seen me sharing links to YouTube videos on things like, what did Roman Legionnaires eat, how did the Aztec Army organize itself, so on and so forth. This is what we’re talking about!!

You don’t even have to crack open a book! (*immediately stops to say prayers of penance to the Hypatia, Patron Saint of Protecting the Existence of Libriaries Everywhere* ...*ahem*...)

Lots of YouTubers have (for free in the past or now with Patreon Power!) posted videos explaining everything from how supplies were transported by armies (the Romans had supply depots in their forts every so many miles, the Aztecs did something similar, but the Romans uses donkeys, mules, etc, and the Aztecs used teenaged boys for their transport power) to how to build a fort, to how to weave clothing, or what foods they ate, on and on and on!  Some are more focused on the historical implications and events, social or political, while others are far more hands-on re-creation/experimental archaeology attempts

There are podcasts about various cultures, regions, events, activities, too, if you’re audio-inclined.  (Some YouTube videos are just really good about describing verbally all the action.)  Books on tape can be available from your local public library for the visually impaired, and Audible-style audio-ebooks are also becoming widespread in these topics.

Plus, there are Living History Re-Creation Societies, if you’re a hands-on person!  The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism, medieval history buffs who do experimental archaeology), Civil War re-enactment groups, Revolutionary War groups, things for the Battle of Hastings, World War II History clubs, on and on and on.

Your local historical and natural history museums are a treasure trove.

Docents love to talk about their areas of expertise!  It’s usually quite worth the entry fee to go see these things (double-check to see what the current exhibits are, of course), and sometimes they have reduced-price days.

Seattle’s Asian Art Museum has a genuine Tea House inside, and regularly gives Tea Ceremony demonstrations, wherein they discuss all the various implements, furniture, construction, customs, significances, and meanings within each phase, as well as the history of how it was developed, who originally gave the tea ceremonies, who prepared it and who got to enjoy it, and the cultural taboos on what one could or could not do in or around a tea house.  (Plus if you time it right, you get to taste properly whipped macha tea, and hoo boy, let’s just say that’s more caffeine-y than I’d expected!)

Everything is a potential resource for world-building.  There are Question Lists specifically for worldbuilding, but some of the Character Question Checklists also ask great questions for considering what the history, culture, living conditions, and so forth are.  If you’ve decided that your character lives in a 1450s Venice-like city with canals...research Venice, even if everyone gets around on the backs of giant trained sea turtles instead of in gondole! (plural of gondola)

History is not just dry boring facts.  Admittedly to find the non-boring stuff, researchers often have to look at a lot of dry boring facts and extrapolate from there, but if you get a great researcher, they will have done the work for you. (To thank them, 1. credit them in your Author’s Notes or Bibliography, and 2. where possible, buy a copy of their research efforts, or support their patreon, especially if you keep going back to the stuff they produce!)
