A volcano erupted near the sea in England. The only way to survive the lava flow was to stand on the boost panels from Super Mario 3D World. I was the only one that made it out of everyone in my family.

Footage shows Italy's Mount Etna erupting
2 June 2025
Social media footage and CCTV in time-lapse released by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology shows Sicily's Mount Etna erupting, sending columns of volcanic steam and ash into the sky.
According to the institute, the cloud was probably caused by a collapse of material from the northern flank of the south-east crater.
Sicily's civil protection department urged hikers to avoid the volcano's summit until further notice.
The eruption has not affected operations at nearby Catania airport. The city mayor told local media that the situation was under control and it was a recurring phenomenon.
Mount Etna is the highest Mediterranean island mountain and the most active stratovolcano in the world.
The eruptive history of the volcano can be traced back 500,000 years and at least 2,700 years of this activity has been documented.

Aside from the notorious eruption of Thera in the 16th century BC, I knew about the eruption in the 1650s which birthed the Nea Kameni island and the 1956 one which caused a 25 meter tsunami but I don’t recall learning about the eruption of 1925, exactly a hundred years ago, about which I found this precious documentation:

A Guy Named Rich
Characters: Richard Armitage x Fem!reader
Lyn's Writing Challenge May 2024 - Day 31 - very late submission (haha)
Tumblr media
May 31st: Challenge Days: Volcanic Eruption
Characters: Richard Armitage x Fem reader!
Fandom: Richard Armitage
Word Count: 2.5k
Location: Iceland – volcanic eruption (current timeline)
Warnings: natural disasters, lava, fluff?, first encounter, anxiety, suspicion, distrust, angst, fear, grief.
Preface:
During a volcanic eruption in Iceland, the experience on the ground would be quite remarkable. Imagine the ground trembling beneath your feet, ash swirling through the air, and the distinct smell of sulfur filling your senses. The sight of molten lava flowing and shaping the landscape would be both mesmerizing and daunting. The sounds of explosions and the Earth’s raw power in action would evoke a mix of awe and fear in those witnessing it firsthand. It’s a moment where nature’s forces command respect and remind us of the incredible power that lies beneath the surface.
You hadn’t put much stock in the wilds of Iceland, but when you landed there, you were instantly spellbound. You were there on a business trip and found that the admin had left you a window to take a hike, before tomorrow’s presentation. So, you did just that. Put on your new hikers, and headed out to a trail the locals had said would be good. Iceland recently had a volcanic eruption earlier in the week, and outside travelers were nervous, but you knew it would be fine. They must deal with this all the time. Why would the locals steer you wrong. You took a “ Hopp taxi” to the trail head and got out, thanking the driver.  You crept up the hill towards an old spring and spotted some people milling about, phones out and mouths agape. It wasn’t until you looked at what they were looking at that you realized the shock.
Was that Richard Armitage on the hill, looking at the geyser? You said to yourself. No, it couldn’t be, its too much of a coincidence. You headed up the trail towards, well him, but walked right by him, not giving it a second thought. That stuff rarely happened to you, so what was the use of giving it merit. You felt a strange sensation on the back of your neck, and rubbed at it, in a scratching motion. You kept going, despite the fact that many people seemed to be coming down the hill in great haste and looking at you with a puzzled expression.
As you crested the hill, you saw the immenseness of lava flowing and spitting up fire ahead of you. It was awe-some. You had never seen anything like it in your life before. And you were momentarily paralyzed by its immensity and raw power. Catching your breath, you retrieved your phone and started snapping pictures just like anyone else would in that moment. Not really realizing how close you were to the edge of the lava flowing riverlet now forming just feet from you. A hand reached out and grabbed at your arm pulling you back from the edge.
You yelped, a reflex and spun around, catching the gaze of a stubbled face man, with stunning blue eyes. You gulped in surprise, “oh fuck”, you blurted when you recognized him. It was Richard Armitage.
He grinned, “Are you ok? That was a close one,” he said almost light heartedly.
You laughed, and turned your head looking at the ground, “oh, thanks, I missed that,” nervously laughing.
“Good thing I wanted to get another look. Though people were giving me the eye for it”, he said, he was wearing a ball cap to subdue his features, but in this hazy afternoon, you couldn’t mistake the sparkle in those eyes of his. They shined in any, and every environment, like beacons to his heart and soul. You lost yourself for a second, and then cleared your throat.
“Listen, thanks again, I should be heading up that way,” you pointed further up, away from the lava flow. He looked to where you were pointing, then back down the hill towards some people looking nervously up at him.
“Mind if I tag along?” He asked. You were a little surprised, and it showed on your face, he acknowledged. “Sorry, sorry, you probably want to be alone. That was forward of me.”
“No, just surprised, won’t they be upset?” You nodded towards the few looking up at him. He sighed and shook his head.
“let’s make them wait, I love to give them the slip once and awhile”, he said smirking that devilish grin at you. You still felt a little suspicious and kindly declined. He looked a little crestfallen and you didn’t understand why. Maybe its lonely at the top, you thought.
“Sorry. I don’t have much time, to, well, meddle about,” you said to him apologetically.
He smirked, “Neither do I, but it might be fun to see it from higher up, right? Come on, how many times are you going to get this opportunity?”  he tried to use his convincing tone on you.
You looked up the hill and down the hill again, still nervous about going anywhere with him,
“Maybe just a little bit. I just don’t want to be blamed or scandalized that’s all, I work in marketing, I know how these things can devolve.”
You ran your hand through your wavy hair and sighed. Richard acknowledged the comment and nodded. He headed up the hill ahead of you and you followed him. Still trying to figure out how you met someone you admired and how you are now hiking up a lava canyon with him. The hill got steeper as you both climbed and you found yourself a bit out of breath, he was too. You got to the next crest and the lava was definitely wider at this height, and sadly not as far away as you had hoped. The stronger the current, the more it would grow. You realized that even from basic physic dynamics from watching floodplains as a kid in the US. A riverbed could go from playful to menacing within a matter of minutes under torrential rain fall.
Richard turned back to look at you, “You ok?” he asked, noticing you had stopped walking. You looked out to the new angle, and it was even more astonishing than before. The snake of the lava curled through the ground and burbled and churned. The ground hummed beneath both of you. Richard stood behind you, in almost an intimate way and it made you visibly nervous. You turned, looking up at him, because well, he’s taller than most people.
You stepped backward away from him, “Um, maybe we should be properly introduced, I’m y/n, and you are?” you put out your hand, in the former way. He looked at it and took it gently.
“I am Richard, Richard Armitage”, his face didn’t give anything away, but there was a hint of sadness in the eyes you noticed.
“Good to meet you Richard”, you responded, and he did the same in kind. As he let go of your hand, it felt like a strange promise for more. You put your hand in your pant pocket nervously. He looked at you under stunning lashes and his nose tipped up towards the summit, with a tilt of his head it was an invitation to keep going higher. The magma churned behind and below you, and you took the challenge willingly.
He walked ahead of you again, seemingly in gentleman’s fashion, but you weren’t too sure, what the intention was, and you normally were a very trustworthy person.
The ground was warming beneath you and you felt the heat rising.
“Don’t you think we getting too close to this?” You asked him ahead of you. Richard turned and looked at you, “What? You want to turn back, already?”
You clenched your jaw, not wanting to relent, this was going to end one way or the other, then you smiled sweetly, “No, no, just wondering how you felt, I think my shoes are getting a bit, melty.” You stepped up and out of some scorched earth, trying to keep to the brown brush instead. Richard chuckled as he headed up over the trail. The magma churning and burning so close you swear you could smell the sulfur. The ash blew around you, you looked up and saw the smoke from the volcano now to your right.
“Aren’t you scared of getting trapped in this?” you asked Richard, Richard stopped walking and came back towards you.
He got a very serious look on his face, like he was trying to discern what to say, and then, he looked down the hill towards the group of people looking more and more nervous at him.
He sighed, “I’d rather be here”, he smiled a little, trying to be charming. You weren’t going for it but did feel a little flattery inside your churning belly.
“Oh,” you replied. He looked you straight in the eyes and that was nearly too much.
His hands seem to drift towards your arms, and you figured it was just his nature. You gave him some distance and his hands dropped. Richard looked around where you were both standing and realized that the flow was increasing and expanding. He looked down the hill and saw people fleeing quickly.
A big burst of smoke shot from the volcano and sprayed new ash into the air. The ground trembled and you held steady, Richard nearly fell over, and you found yourself catching him a bit. He chuckled and righted himself.
“The bigger they are the harder they fall, right?” you said, trying for some humor to relieve the tension. Richard swept off his knees, “Yeah, apparently, I think you might be right about us heading back down.”
You both started back down the trail, but the brown crunch of the grasses were softening, and the trail was shrinking. Richard’s phone buzzed in his pocket, he checked it and quickly texted back, then looked towards the people in the valley, waving wild hands in the parking lot at least 100 yards away. Richard squinted and looked to you.
“Well, we may have to brave this together, they said there is a bulletin to get off the trail, and they are leaving” he kind of grimaced and then chuckled.
“What do you mean there leaving you? Aren’t they your staff?” You asked, surprised.
“Not really, they are hired by my publisher,” Richard remarked.
“But what happens if you don’t make it back to the trailhead?” you said, pointing down the hill.
Richard sighed heavily, “Nothing, I guess I burn”,
You felt a strange sensation to reassure him, and put your hand on his arm,
“Look I don’t have any idea why your up here with me of all people, but I don’t think you intended to see a natural wonder as a suicide mission, did you?”
Richard looked abashed and readjusted his cap, “No, I did not. But I cannot compel them to stay for my account, the only one I can count on is him, (he pointed further away), and he will make sure I do come down this hill.”
You strained your eyes in the gathering ashen fog and saw a man looking quite serious in a pullover coat and trousers. He was shorter than Richard, medium build, short hair, and a serious scowl planted on his face.
“He looks pretty angry with you”.
A flying object zoomed by you both and you yelped in alarm. It was a drone taking geographic surveys of the volcano. Richard swatted it away merely in protest. You both moved down the trail and continued to attempt to escape the growing lava flow.
“Yeah, Neil has that face”, he grinned, “Its kind of what I pay him for”.
You laughed, “fair enough.”
“But he allows me these adventures, he won’t be carrying me off or anything, he just is there to remind me that I need to keep my priorities straight.” Richard explained, his tone was lighter, but you could hear the tension there, like he was quite unhappy with part of his situation.
“I don’t mean to pry, but we are sharing this trek together, do you mind if I ask you a question?”
Richard looked over at you, openly eager, “Sure, what is it?”
“Why do you seem so, well sad?” You asked.
He cleared his throat, making a few steps ahead of you before turning back towards you.
“I’m grieving the loss of my father, and some days it still gets to me. You can never really prepare yourself for the loss of a parent, even though it is inevitable in life’s journey. I lost them both so quickly, it just is taking me a little bit to get used to the idea.” Richard explained. He turned back to the trail and kept moving down the hill at a steady pace.
You were filled with such guilt for the question, “Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. I did not know. I am sorry for your loss. I know were all supposed to say that. I lost my father 2 years ago, and it still is a shock sometimes. I scroll through texts and just, start crying”.
Richard paused then, and stepped up to you, suddenly enlivened by a mere connection, “Exactly. And then it hits you again, Bam (he slams his hands together), and you have to remember where you are, work has been tricky, you know. Dealing with the waves, I just thought if I could get out in nature and feel the earth rumble, feel something new, something, (he moved his hands outward) big it would snap me back to being me again,”
He clung to you his hands digging into your arms, he looked at you sternly, “I shouldn’t have said that, I’m just, I’m sorry, y/n”, he dropped his hands again, and you grabbed at his hand, squeezing it in your palm.
“No, I understand, you’re a ship without a harbor, adrift. Any other ships seem like an oasis, or whatever the sea equivalent is, an island?” you say, kind of half-heartedly chuckled, scratching at the hair on the back of your neck that was creeping up again.
“Well thanks, y/n for saying that. It means a lot, truly”, he led you by the hand down a bit further, the heat was rising again as you descended, and the ash was less, but it still was filling your lungs it seemed, and you started to cough a bit.
Just as you thought you wouldn’t get to the trail again, you felt cooler ground beneath your feet and heard him sigh. You just let him lead you down the path by his soft hand and kept your eyes closed from the ash. He stopped and you opened them, finding yourself in the parking lot, much closer to that stern gentleman, named Neil. Richard smiled at you.
“Thanks for the adventure, y/n, it was just what I needed”, Richard let go of your hand and stepped towards Neil and a waiting vehicle.
You looked around quickly, seeing nothing else around, “Wait? Can I get a ride back to the city?”
You asked coming up behind him. Richard smiled again, “Yes, of course,”
You got into his car and pulled away from an awesome display of natures power of you, and an Icelandic volcano.

the third eruption has ended but it's the most catastrophic by far.
the lava flow hit thermal-based water pipes in the southern peninsula disrupting the supply of hot water to more than 20,000 people. for those who don't know, most of iceland uses hot water to heat our houses and if there's no hot water, it's gonna get fucking cold.
people have been using electric heaters but that's also putting a strain on infrastructure and people have been asked to conserve electricity.
sadly this is just the beginning i fear. it's been predicted that we're only just entering a decades-long volcanic era.
it has been a peaceful area for about 800 years now, but back in the viking age it erupted on and off for 300 years.
it's beautiful but catastrophic.
