Today, America Ferrera told us, and a room full of young Latinx folks, to use our voice. After meeting with her, Nelson Araujo (a politician in Nevada), and alumni members from the Latino Youth Leadership here in Las Vegas, both Briceida and I realized many things. Apparently, Latin[x]s don’t vote. Instead of moving away from this common narrative that’s supposed to encourage us to step up and vote, most of the discussion made it seem like Latin[x]s don’t vote because they’re indifferent and because these issues don’t matter.
While we both have major critiques and reservations about Hillary Clinton, we’ve begrudgingly faced the reality that we’re probably most likely voting for her. So when one of our friends invited us to the luncheon, we thought we should attend to see what other Latinx folks were saying and thinking about the election. America Ferrera told us that “we have to look at the bigger picture, think fifty to a hundred years from now, not just at the next four or eight.” As we were sitting there we thought, hmm, what bigger picture? Who is included in this picture? How do we achieve this picture? And who is left behind? Unfortunately, these questions were not included in the conversation. Over and over we heard how it is up to us to tell people how critical it is to get to the polls on November 8th. That we are the one’s in charge of the future of the Latin[x] community, and we should no longer wait for the next Cesar Chavez.
After America Ferrera told us the reasons why it’s necessary to mobilize the Latin[x] population, the folks in the room began sharing how they felt about the struggles of getting people to vote alongside other relevant issues in our communities. Instead of immediately critiquing folks for not being radical enough, we want to meet people where they are at... too often Briceida and I shut down when dialogue isn’t where it has to be (and honestly, this usually means where we’re at in our radical consciousness), but we understand this isn’t constructive and won’t help our movements grow. Still, the conversation felt less and less constructive as it continued. We touched on topics such as the environmental issues in our communities and how they affect our health; we also addressed the lack of support from some representatives who continue ignoring the detrimental impacts, even while we are dying. Yet, we hoped it could have led the discussion to address how these issues, experienced by our communities, intersect with other problems that might seem like they don’t apply.
Latinx folks can organize around Hillary’s campaign and still be critical and honest about the realities of our government, our system, and our politicians. Sure, it might seem like people, and not just Latinx folks, are apathetic towards voting. But conversations like these don’t question why we’re not passionate about Hillary. Why are we not energized to campaign for Hillary? While the conversation we had today skirted around the effects of white supremacy, that exact wording was never outright mentioned. This might be because folks don’t have this language, but it might also be because Hillary Clinton is a product of white supremacy herself. That’s what most of our government represents. Sure the Latinx population can show up and vote in large numbers, but ultimately how can we harness this power to build long-term social and institutional change? We may be a strong force, but who has power over the justice system, and the government agencies that impact our lives? At the end of the day we acknowledge we have to navigate the system we are in, but voting does not automatically change social perception and neither does it get to the actual root of the problems. Again the policy we are seeing creates band-aids and are a huge disservice to our communities. It is just as important to discuss the accountability of our representatives. We acknowledge this luncheon was only an hour, but it is reflective of the type of conversations happening around the nation.
Although, most of the platica made us uneasy, it wasn’t all painful.... they definitely had great appetizers. Shout out to the croissant breakfast sandwiches and yogurt parfaits. Those blueberries were real thick (hopefully they weren’t supplied by Driscoll’s). But all jokes set aside America Ferrera did mention the necessity to build community across issues--that’s what The Muxerista Collective is about. While there’s definitely a lot of room for growth and radicalization, we still appreciate how willing folks are to begin building bridges when someone want to build walls. We honor America Ferrera for the time and energy she invests into Latinx communities using her platform. Hopefully we can challenge ourselves to seek conversations that are more than surface level and lukewarm. And hopefully we can continue realizing nosotrxs somos resistencia, and have been for a long time.

Okay, Now You're All Just Being Petty.
Everyone is already calling for Trumps impeachment before he's even in office.
What happened to "Each American deserve a chance!" and "Equality for everyone!"
Practice what you preached people.
You can't convict a person before they've done anything.

Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!
Yesterday I voted for my very first time (12 PM EST). Exhilarating the process was (due to the factor my mother was proud and told the crowd of my voting experience), it really was not all that. I entered my precinct ward directed behind my house within a few hundred steps. The lines where just right. The weather was just right; a-not-fall-to-almost-winter weather, to my surprise before I left I had to change out of the layers I created during my outfit setting ritual in my bedroom (sign 1).
Inside the precinct ward, it was close to dear life I almost could not vote; I began to feel anxious although my posture and expressions were reluctantly calm. My natural asili within me ordered me to vote, though. Truth is I did not want to. As I was getting dressed, I found a loophole to not voting with the generations before me (my mother and maternal grandmother). I had the same political outlook as many melanin brothers and sisters, our voices aren’t counted in this society. I voted anyway. I knew I owed it to my ancestors who died for this and to the future generations.
Back to my anxiety, I honestly did not know if I was going to be able to vote. I filled out an AB for North Adams while I went to school out there. My mom was more anxious; she ALMOST seemed like she was going to sacrifice her vote just to make sure I did. This is interesting. The idea behind the real meaning behind voting. It is significant. Everything in this society is VOTED on, when you are not at the table you’ll be on the table which will seem like everything is being DICTATED if you’re on it. In a way, yes and yes. Both voting happens and dictation happens. Dictation happens because we let it happen by not voicing our opinion. Whenever we do, it is too late (look at the 2016 presidency campaign, Bernie).
I will NOT be dictated! Give me liberty or give me death! I voted, of course reluctant still. But voted for the very first time, as a 20 year old Afro-Amerikan Female in this society.
Voting was confusing as hell (I know my other melanin brothers and sisters who did not vote, did not vote for that very reason; confusion and being unaware) *SIGN 2*. Plain and simple I did not know who to vote for after voting for a president. I regret not using my self-determination to understand who would be on the ballots and understanding their position. I didn’t have to vote anyone, didn’t know that. But most of them held the election on their own so it it inevitable they would win; still I was not relectuant when it came to that process. The next process that took some on the foot thinking was the 5 questions that could possibly be enacted as laws. I was careful and thoughtful. Anyone who would like to discuss and exchange answers, let’s go! But I feel it is important to practice my privacy right and not disclose of that information.
At the end of this process, after taking first-time-voter-generational-photos-family-style, I had hope instilled me. Hope for time; time was still on our side for the right person to be chosen to stretch time out a little bit longer. (GOING INTO SIGN 3)
