Winx Club Childhood Headcanons: Bloom

While I am still working on my future AU, I decided to spice up the Winx childhoods with some tidbits. First up: Bloom

💫Before Daphne sent Bloom to Earth, she has put two spells on her. The first one was an easy one, it allowed people who might find her know her true name. Daphne believed that one day she might be able to return to her home planet so this spell would help her when she finds inscriptions of her name.

The second one was much more difficult to do. It was a somewhat sentient conglomeration of magic that would protect Bloom pretth much till she dies or she acrivates her Winx. At this point in time, it protected her three times. The first one was when Mike found her. The second one was when she was being annoyed by a kid in preschool. It made Bloom look like a dragon for a second and scared the kid off. The third one was during the Knut fight in the first episode.

💫She was four months old when she was sent to Earth, which means she could at least experience a bit of Domino life during that time.

💫One significant thing were Marions stories. If the parent has enough magical experience, they can mentally project the story into the kid's brain and help them with memorisation. That's why Bloom even got the fascination with fairies as Marion described the Domino fairies in a lot of detail.

💫Bloom didn't live with her adoptive parents right away. At first she was sent to a child center for lost or abandoned kids bc they were trying to find her parents. Another thing was that Mike and Vanessa didn't think they would do a good job raising a child. They were married for two years at that point and Vanessa just opened up her flower shop a few weeks prior to finding Bloom. They were still looking out for her as they visited her every weekend. After a year and a half, they finally decided to adopt her as the search was unsuccesful.

💫She got interestes in art after she won in a school art competition at the age of 10. Vanessa encouraged her to submit her highly detailed drawing of a castle.

💫Sports were one of the things the family did regularly. From biking to swimming, they were very active whenever they could. This made Bloom the second most athletic Winx after Aisha.

💫Bloom and Mitzi used to be BFFs. Mitzi transfered to Blooms school and the classmates mocked her as she was "just a spoiled rich girl" which was not true at the time. Bloom befriended her as both weren't that liked by the other kids for being different (Bloom was quite a wild kid back then). But after starting middle school, Mitzi found other friends (which were also the popular kids) while they driftee more apart. Bloom still tried to be her friend, but Mitzi rarely paid attention to her. One rare occasion was when she broke up with Andy when they were both 15. After founding the Winx Club, she realized what true friend were really and wanted to "get revenge" on Mitzi in the Hallowinx episode.

Whoa, I remember I really struggled with this one!!!! ♥ when you want to make an "easy Fan Art" and you end up drawing 5 characters together in a technique you're not used to.... OMG! I used to watch W.I.T.C.H. on Disney channel back when I was a teenager, and I loved it! ♥ Now imagine my surprise when I discovered it was based on a comic book, illustrated by the great duo of Barbara Canepa and Alessandro Barbucci! Well, I went crazy about the story!!!! So... for my April rewards, I HAD TO draw all of the guardians! ♥

Top 5 Friday: Worst things about W.i.t.c.h.

To balance out last week's Top 5 Best things about W.i.t.c.h., here's some complaints! Like the previous list, this is about the earlier issues of the series. So if issue #125 is mind-blowingly awesome and fixes everything I'm whining about here I'll have to eat my words, but I don't feel like researching dozens of issues I haven't read for a list like this.

Only Top 4 this time due to the reasons explained below.

4. Too Will-centric at times

Overall W.i.t.c.h. did a good job telling the story of five girls and not that of The Pink Leader + some background cheerleaders, but there were times where I felt like it was expecting all readers to find Will the most interesting character of them all. I don't know, maybe I'm just biased (my favourites were non-Will girls) or hyper sensitive to the Pink Leader Spotlight Hogging Syndrome, but my overall feeling of the series is that there were too many scenes where Will and the Heart of Kandrakar turned out to be the center of attention at the high point of the story, and the other girls' moments being more often the "okay, now she had her moment, moving on" kind.

3. Underutilising the lore

Our heroes are said to be the latest group of the Guardians of Kandrakar. We get to hear a little bit about the group just before them, but that's it. Shouldn't the earlier teams have interesting personalities and exciting stories too, so how about a flash back or a spin-off? Or at the very least, show us their outfits!

I have to give credit for exploring the politics of Kandrakar and the history of their boss at least, so the good guys' HQ doesn't remain completely bland.

2. WE

I thought that the series was just fine without an obnoxious mascot creature, so adding one didn't exactly net any points from me. The whole little nuisance was so removed from the main story and even the art style that it completely felt like a desperate attempt to force in a cutesy quirky thing because little girls like ugly creatures like this or whatever. Like sure the story is about the fate of the universe or at least the lives of the middle school girls, but let's not forget about WE, let's check what kind of stupid mischief it is up to now! Whawhawha! Bwhu! Whiii!

Checking back it didn't really have nearly as much presence in the actual story as I remembered, but just the idea of this thing existing in the same universe as our main characters is enough to irk me. If it had been in the story from the very beginning I'd probably be a little more tolerant of it, but inserting it 50 issues in in a contrived manner when the animal companions so far had been ordinary cats and dormice felt so forced and calculated that the series never really recovered from the blow for me. 

1. Not knowing when to stop

The mother of all problems. When I was trying to think of a fifth item for this list, everything I came up with sort of merged here.

I think that the first two arcs are amazing, and a couple of the arcs after them have a ton of good ideas even if they don't get me as interested. But the quality certainly decreased as time went on, and since the series didn't have some kind of ultimate end boss who the whole story was building towards, the whole thing turned into a series of "do this mini quest! and now this! and now this one!". Sure there were new revelations and plot and character developments, but to me it felt like the series wasn't trying to go anywhere, and especially the fact that the characters had to remain school girls and thus couldn't grow up or change the setting. The relationship developments felt more like soap opera that was invented just because you need to have something to keep the story going rather than something interesting that needed to be told. And as the story went on, the characters who once felt like believable middle schoolers who had different personalities but were never solely defined by one generic trait started to feel just easily processable Precure-esque trope bundles for pre-teen girls.

I would really have liked it if the series had taken the Precure route and replaced the main cast with a new one once you had told everything worth telling about them. You could move to future with the old cast growing older and maybe acting as mentors to the new group, or tell about the past guardians. Of course that would have led to fans complaining and comparing how nothing is as good as the original team, but I still think it would have been worth the try. New character dynamics would definitely have spiced up the tired character relations that hadn't been going anywhere interesting in ages, plus the fact that the magical girl generation system went so underused is such a sin in general (grumble grumble). The sequel possibilities were handed to you on a silver platter!
