Hey, I'm back!

Sorry about last week, but I was very, very sick? Very bad attack of flemmingite aigue!

Translated in English, I was feeling lazy as f*ck, so I just watched Youtuvideos. I'm sure you know how it goes. Feeling better now, but still have little to show to show for it.

Speaking of lazyness...

I know I waxed lyrical about food and markets and all that jazz, but one can't really live on the local production.

One can only do so much with fish, after all.

So we have Supermarchés Lapompe. Not Walmart, but the small chain (2 markets) does brsk business with both locals and tourits in both basic nececities... and about a ton of of junk food, let's be honest here. And that's the dirty little secret we're don't really like to talk about.

The Lapompe family also deal in fuel, gas, and electricity proction and storage. Their home lot is shaping to be something else!

I didn't upload that one because it's a very basic one, sure y'all can do just as well.

Otherwise, I had a CAS moment. I know, weird.

I made that quite big appartent building nect to the market last time, and the inhabitant just came to life in my head. Happens sometimes.

So, meet the Boucicaud family:

Bernard Boucicaud.

He is the reason the famijy is here, since the building they're residing in belonged to his grandparents. Bernard was born here,tail ending the boomer generation, but he grew up in Paris, since his parent hightailed out of Vogoel to make careers and a life as far away from anything fishy as possible.

Bernard had very nice vacation in his grandmother house as a boy.

However, as his parent fled Vogoel, Bernard fled Paris to traval the world, because he was an artist.

In Delhi, he met

Lucie

Then Dolman, now Boucicaud. Same kind of story except she's from Marseille.

They both liked to travel, so they did, Bernard managing some free-lance photographing to earn a little money and Lucy learning Yoga and stuff.

Both probably smoking funny stuf.

But time flies, and a baby girl was bord... and there is one day when you long for a nice bed and some creature comfort, so they came back to France.

Infortunately, neither were talented enough as artist to "make it" in the capital. So Bernard remembered his Mémé house, which his parent didn't really use and were quite happy to get rid of. It provide a far more luxurious accomodation than what they could afford in Paris, and it's would be a far better place for their girl to grow up in.

And here is said girl, Namaste Boucicaud.

First, why did those idiot boomer parents she's saddled with had to name her Namaste? She hates it! honestly, Grertrude would be nicer!

And OMG the parents! Couldn't they be, I don't know, a little bit NORMAL once in a while? (well, they're both Avant Garde, so the teen may have a point here)

At least her father had some job with the local paper, so Namaste could forget the cheesy seagull photos to sell to tourists... and the paintings.

And her mother, still dressing like she was young, in jeans and exotic tops!

Honestly, Namaste can't wait to get her Bacalaureat and flee to Paris to her grand parents who are normal people and call her Nathalie.

Even in cool weather, you are still in the desert. STAY HYDRATED and NEVER (and I do mean NEVER) go ANYWHERE in the desert without water.

Yes, we do have drive through wedding chapels. Yes, they are legit. So if you decide to go that route for a little 'funny vid/silly joke for pics' please know it can and will result in a legally, binding marriage.

SHOWS HAVE DARK DAYS. If you are wanting to see shows while you are here, purchase tickets in advance so you know you've got a seat and you know for sure that you're planning to attend on a night the show is going. The person selling you the tickets does not have control over what days the production runs - don't be a douche and take it out on them if your schedule of plans don't work out like you planned.

There are always thousands of tourists here. You know what that means? There are cameras EVERYWHERE. If you do something stupid chances are its going to be caught on camera and posted/uploaded somewhere.

So basically have fun while you're here but remember to stay hydrated, intoxicate responsibly, AND ALSO... PICK UP YOUR FUCKING TRASH. Seriously guys, there are trash cans everywhere - USE THEM!

You get your voice heard. You get to be a part of a great cause without having to spend any money. You get to try new things (in my country Cuba Cola has gained new popularity as Coca-Cola is boycott). You get to save money. By not spending money on non-essentials you save a lot of money you may not even realise you spent. It gives you more of an opportunity to shop local and learn what you have around you. You can learn a new skill. Instead of going to starbucks you can learn that creating signature drinks is fairly simple and a lot cheaper. You may even get health benefits. By not buying items such as junk food or by making a homemade version of something you will most likely have a positive impact on you health!

I think I woke up around 4:50am, but as usual, I didn't start my day until 5:30am. I was bummed out because I had the beginnings of a headache, but it wasn't so bad that I couldn't manage at least a half-day at the shelter. Even now, it's not too terrible.

Did you have any unread text messages when you woke up this morning? I did. It was from Iris (manager), asking if I would be willing to help out in cat iso this week. We're short staffed because one of our vet techs left just recently. Pam, Madame President, I'm so sad to see her go. o7 But I told her I would be happy to help. Looks like my schedule for the upcoming days will be Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday.

When was the last time you had to get a new phone? What happened to your old phone? Sometime around 2016-2017. It was just getting so bogged down; I needed a phone with more memory.

I don't understand the economics of big youtube channels. (542 words)

It's easy to see how small and medium-sized youtube channels make money. Most creators with low overhead will have sponsored segments where they peddle some meal prep service for sixty seconds. As budget goes up, and if they have a big enough audience, then you start to see people setting up online merch stores, launching Patreon with side content and discord access, and possibly even getting revenue from a non-youtube streaming service (like Dropout or Nebula) where they upload the majority of their videos.

What I don't understand are how the really big channels make money, the ones that break tens of millions of views on every single video. As an illustrative example, I'm going to use "I Cooked For A Lion" by former MasterChef contestant Nick DiGiovanni. From a creative standpoint, it's a video about cooking meals for a variety of different animals species, culminating in cooking a steak for a lion. From a financial standpoint, it's a 25 minute ad for his line of premixed seasonings, available now at your local walmart. That's how most of these channels operate. Once they hit a certain threshold they are essentially no longer media companies, and are instead just product lines that maintain the youtube channels to serve as in-house advertising that people willingly watch far longer than any typical commercial

However, as far as advertisements go, "I Cooked For A Lion" is very strange to me. The video consists of 17 different segments, lasting 85 seconds on average, each of which seem to have been filmed on different days and in a different locations spanning multiple continents, along with substantial post-production work. I have no clue how much it cost to make, and I can't imagine how it could be cost effective advertising. I'm sure it led to a bump in sales, but not a big enough one to justify spend a month traveling the globe with a film crew. There must have been some fat that could've been cut somewhere.

Cooking for multiple animals makes sense, videos based around "levels" do well at audience retention by constantly increasing the stakes. And there were segments that clearly made sense to keep, either because they showcased the product (like when he feed a bear a rotisserie chicken coated in his chicken season mix, on sale now for 40% off), because they were good ways to make the video more viral (like when he cooked for a water skiing squirrel that's more famous than he is) because they're cheap ways to pad out the video (like when he cooked for his pet dog in his own home), or just because the guy wanted to do them (he says penguins are his favorite animal so I'm sure he enjoyed spending an afternoon with them).

But then there's segments like the tortoise one, where he flew all the way to Malaysia and filmed 80 seconds worth of footage that wasn't even interesting. Or when he went to Iceland and chartered a boat for the blue whale segment, which didn't actually have any blue whales. Part of me thinks it was some sort of tax fraud where he was just putting those clips in the video as an excuse to write off personal vacations are business trips.
