Warren Peace x Reader: Interest
Word Count: 766 Warnings/Notes: Slightly confused Reader, mention of growing embarrassment (brief), friends asking a lot of questions, implied crush on Warren Peace. Cute moment with Warren. Summary: The Reader is a little late to lunch, but just before they make it to their table of friends, another student asks them out. How will the group of friends react to the news?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
It was not usual for you to be a little late to lunch. Sure, it was only by a few minutes, but you were hungry. With your lunch finally in your grasp, you made your way around the tables already occupied by the normal chatter of other students. Normal may not have been the best word choice for minors with super human abilities, but it was for you. Most days. You caught Layla’s attention as you neared the table. Her friendly smile, however, was lost to you as your view became obstructed. Halting with a piercing squeak of your shoe, you waited in confusion. “Hey,” he said. A student that you recognized from a few of your classes stood in front of you. “Hi,” you gave a small smile in acknowledgement. He took a moment’s breath and scratched the back of his head. “Um…” “Is everything okay?” “Do you want to go out with me?” Your eyebrows shot up. “What? I-I mean, no. No, thank you.” A strange mixture of emotions bubbled around and you made a mad dash around him before the heat of embarrassment from a few fumble of words spread. With long quick strides, you finally made it to the lunch table.
Is being a teenager always like this? Why were emotions so complicated some times? “What was that about?” Layla asked, bringing you out of your thoughts. Setting down your food, you took a deep calming breath and sat down beside Warren. “Oh, um, he asked me out.” A page crinkled to your right, but your friends were otherwise quiet. Layla leaned forward, her pigtails swaying slightly over her green salad. “And?” “And I said no.” Confident. Self-assured with your decision, though seemingly small in comparison to other more pressing issues, felt good. And why shouldn’t you? “Good for you,” Magenta nodded in agreement. “But why?” Zach asked, his nose scrunching in his bewilderment. “Do you not like him or something?” “It’s not that simple,” you said between bites of your food. “And why not?” He pressed, making you laugh a little. Patting a napkin over your mouth, you sighed quietly. “Well, firstly, I’m not going to go out or date someone that I don’t like, or not interested in. Heck, I’ve barely talked with him.” Layla and Magenta nodded slowly. “Sounds reasonable enough.” “Any other reason?” Will asked, peering over Warren’s hunched form. You laughed, “What, you want a detailed list or something?” “That sounds a bit excessive,” Warren smiled into his book. “Unless the list is for myself, out of curiosity and to better understand my own reasons and stuff.” “And what would you put on the list for that guy?” Ethan asked, pulling your attention away from Warren. It was nearing on hilarious by how invested they were about such a short conversation. If it could even be considered a conversation. “For one thing, he never returned the pen he borrowed from me, and I saw him break it while fiddling with it. So, there’s that.” Will burst out in laughter. “Is that why you don’t want to date him? Because—” “No,” you stopped him. “I just don’t like him. Especially in that way. If I’m not friends with, or just can’t even imagine myself holding his or anyone’s hand, then I’m not going out with them.” “Oh,” Will looked down, “sorry.” “No biggie,” you smiled reassuringly, before returning to what remained of the food in front of you.
Curious concerning friends. You were grateful for that. They each showed it in their own ways. And as invested as they had become, you were relieved that neither one of them had asked one question in particular. Who are you interested in? Your eyes drifted from your lunch to the inky text in front of Warren. “Good book?” Glancing over at you with a smile, his voice was soft, warm. “Yeah. It’s the third in the series.” “Cool.” As your eyes both pulled away from each other, you caught movement from under the table. The motion was slow and short. Had you been deeply involved with something else, you might have missed it entirely. Warren had lightly bumped your knee with his. Could you ever decipher if he was flirting with you or just being a delightful silly friend with gestures like those? You were not sure. But one day you would know, and you hoped that it was both. Why not? Smiling to yourself, you nudged your knee to his twice. Though as you retracted, his knee met yours again and remained there. This should be interesting.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
Hi! Thank you for reading! I seem to be writing more Warren Peace now lol I have other ideas/WIPs that I'm working on, so I hope you're ready for that.

Remember that reader-insert Isekai idea? Yeah, I am now inspired. Tell me what you guys think at the end ;D
----
Fate could have been more cruel when you died. It could have sent you to the depths of hell, for example. Instead, you have been transported into a world of magic. You are not sure how you arrived here nor how you died; your past memories are gone, at least those that make up the reason of your reincarnation into the wonderful world of hermitingcrafting Arcane Odyssey.
You've found yourself on Cirrus Island, taken under the wing of the Vista family. Of course, you were fast to jump to conclusions: that you are the main character, the clean slate that is supposed to be the Player. Your first instinct was to jump off the Stepstones to meet Ren or take a ship to Sailor's Lodge to continue the storyline but you were promptly stopped by many of the locals. They assured you that you would break all of your bones if you did that... after a daring jump off a metre high rock, you were convinced that fall damage was real.
For a while, you're vigilant. Nervous. You find that you have been reborn without magic. Which, fair. The universe brought you back from the dead and gave you a life you should be grateful for. Still, it sucks that you've been forced into the non-magic stat builds. Ha. Stat builds. If anyone here heard you mention stats, they'd look at you weird.
There is no sign of Iris. Neviro is nowhere to be found. Ren, or Warren, is also gone. Elius isn't at the Djinn Ruins when you work up the courage and go to check. There are a lot of scorch marks on the ground though and all of the trees are burnt to a crisp.
Over the next few days, you come to the conclusion that you aren't part of the story. None of the main characters are on Cirrus Island and the first Order boss has been defeated, meaning they've moved on. You can just, relax. Relax and enjoy life as a cottage core farmer because you've got no money to make it in the world.
So, you've built yourself a quaint little cottage on the edge of the island. You've got a little garden that you're hoping to expand into a proper field, a plant nursery, a bunch of baskets to forage for rare reagents and ingredients, a whole wardrobe of different outfits that you're pretty sure were not in the game. At least there are some jean overalls you can wear for your farm work. Every now and then, you do chores for the locals -not without a fair reward, of course. Anything for one more galleon in this economy.
And so you live out your days on the quiet sky island, immersing yourself into the experience and only caring about saving up to go on a bunch of adventures in the grand War Seas! You could go anywhere you wanted if you save up enough. With the amount of research you've done into ships and naval commands, you should be able to handle a bit of sea travel in the old vessels of wood and iron. It's peaceful and it's home.
Until a newspaper is thrown at you when you exit your house on October 1st. You're fast enough to catch it before it hits your face and like every Monday morning, you sit and read the news to see what has gone wrong and whether Prince Revon made up with his girlfriend or not. However, the headline catches your attention.
"A curse user and a lost magic user attacked the Ravenna Castello last night, wounding General Julian severely. The beloved, young general managed to fight off the attackers, securing the mage, while the Cursed evaded capture..."
The rest of the words are lost to you. If you're right -and you know you are- then the people mentioned here are Morden and Iris. Where is Neviro? Where the fuck is the Player? Nothing about the Eternal Mines is mentioned. King Calvus IV has not been mentioned. This is not how the Castello fight was supposed to go!
With a big gasp, realization dons on you. Cold sweat rolls down your temple.
You are the Player.
#arcane odyssey#i had to put the hermitcraft reference#i wrote mcyt famfics okay?#also we're going with no magic#because icb bothered putting extra “(/)”#it's 2:33am as i am writing this#and yes we're actual farmers#it is now 2:53am#also yes pinkie pie ref at the end#thought I'd keep the tone serious though#asks and inquiries are appreciated and welcomed#please give me free content#also this au has no name#and that's all#good night!!

Colour of Fire
Summary: Sky High, Warren Peace/Reader, Soulmate AU, you see colour when you first see your soulmate; Reader transfers after the events of Sky High
Powers, you have powers. You knew it was a little more common that everyone let on, all those heroes and villains had to come from somewhere and you never had given thought to where they went to school. You had assumed they could all control their powers but as you realised walking up to Sky High that it was not the case. You grimace a little, worried you’ll slip up and get on someone’s bad side.
There’s a group of people sitting around and you’re about to walk past them when one calls out.
“Y/N, right?” You know he must recognise you from the news, or maybe all people with powers get told of each other; it would make sense, easier to hide that way.
You were nervous, you’d developed powers overnight, neither of your parents had powers and you weren’t sure where they came from. Everything was black and white still, you were a little surprised that going to Sky High, the school for superhero’s didn’t reveal your soulmate. You’d gotten a tour from Layla and she was happy to let you sit with her and her other friends.
They were saying how you’d come into the school at a good time; there had been some issues with a villain at the school, but now that it was resolved a loy of the clique problems had vanished. You’d learned that the school usually divided the students into heroes and sidekicks based on their power levels.
While they still did that; you didn’t have the best control so you were in the sidekick group, it wasn’t as an intense social divide as it had been.
“So your soulmate here?” Magenta grins and you shake your head.
“No still black and white for me, you?”
“Saw them the second I laid eyes on these two.” She gestures and laughs and you grin at her, happy that your new friends are together. Layla and Will had been soulmates since they were little kids so no one was surprised.
“Warren hasn’t found his soulmate either, so you won’t be the only one to not understand colours.”
“Warren?”
“Mhm, he has a cold today..” Will howls with laughter and you frown, wondering why his friend being sick is so funny.
When Warren shows up later in the week, fire dancing on his fingers you understand why him having a cold was so funny. When they flames disappear and he shakes your hand, looking you in the eyes, do you realizes how relieved you are that your powers are water based. You blame his heat on the steam between both of you, not the sudden realization at how beautiful the brown of his eyes is.
“Oh.”
“What?” Lyala interrupts and Warren grins, your stomach fluttering at it.
“Never thought I’d be happy to have my flames extinguished, but here we are. What else can you do then?”
“Not much, I don’t have good control…”
“Well let's turn up the heat and see what happens?” He laughs again and you can’t help the water that soaks him, causing steam to rise up from his hair and clothes as he dries himself off.
Warren stays by your side and carefully explains the best way to get to every class, what the teachers are like and the best places to sit for lunch, one of which is with him. He winks when he says that and it makes you blush a little.
“So you don’t know how you got powers?”
“Yeah both my parents are non-powered. Little bit of a shock when I woke up and everything was floating…”
“I’ve heard of that happening before, I mean Mr. Big Shot himself was a late bloomer.” Warren waves his hand over to where Will and Layla are sitting.
“Yeah and you're half the reason I ended up getting them in the first place!” Will waves back. You know there’s probably a really good story behind that, like all hero’s you supposed but you focus back on what Warren is saying.
“Being a late bloomer isn’t anything to be ashamed about, just means you get more free passes.” He smirks a little and you shrug,
“I have okay control, well unless I get scared or angry, or…”
“Too emotional, yeah I understand that. I’m pyrokinetic, so I feel a little too much and then things go on fire, not the safest.”
“Sounds pretty bad, have you had any issues recently?”
“No, pretty much after the whole uhh villain thing, with Royal Pain…”
“What happened there? All the civilians got told was that there was an issue with some superheroes.”
“That’s basically it.” He grins at you and you smile back.
You’ve been dating Warren for three weeks. In that time he’s actually helped you figure out your power control and the things that seemed to trigger it the worst. So far the biggest trigger seemed to be you being cold which was something Warren was always happy to cuddle you to relieve.
“You okay Y/N?”
“Huh, yeah…” You blink out of your stupor and Warren gives you a look that say you’ll be talking later.
Later is actually in the hallway on the way to class when he pulls you into one of the empty classrooms.
“Whats..”
“My mom cheated on my dad which is why my powers were late…”
“Oh. Fucking hell Y/N, when did you figure that out?”
“Last night.. He was a villain, got out of jail, my mom made a comment about it and my dad got pissed, then they argued and she told him and I was coming back from school so i heard it..”
“You should be, uh not here. I was going to say go home, but that’s probably not the best..” You can't help but laugh at that and Warren grins back.
“Glad I didn't upset you.”
“I do think you could ever upset me, one of the things I love about you.”
“Love?” he questions and now you're laughing nervously.
“yeah, I uh, I love you.”
“I love you too, now how about we go get some chinese food?”
“You’re just saying that because I can get you a staff discount.” He grins and you nod laughing when he pulls you in for a hug kissing you.

Kekkon suru (Shouto Todoroki)
TAGS: Shouto/F!reader, fluff, crack, oneshot
“Marry my son”
“Eh.................EEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
Not a single person made a peep after the 2nd-ranking hero’s astonishing statement.
The silence was so encompassing that one could hear a pin drop and the tension so thick that you could cut it with a knife.
Then again how was anyone supposed to react after hearing such a thing and coming from THAT person as well?
Wait a minute, you must be confused and curious about the current situation, right?
Well, let’s go back to the events prior to this…
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
The UA Sports Fest was a momentous annual event for both students and spectators. It was a chance for those already in the Hero Course to prove on national television that they deserved to be where they are right now. Additionally, it was for those who didn’t quite make the cut in the hero course to showcase that they too were worthy of and determined to become heroes as well.
This year's Sports Fest however was...a little bit different compared to the previous years.
“Did you see that, Papa?! That Todoroki has the same quirk as me. How cool is that?!”
“I do admit that he has a pretty solid grasp of his quirk, but...you're still much more skilled and adept at handling it compared to him”
“You think so?”
“I know so. Now go get ‘em tiger”
Being the sole child of a villain and hero was not an easy thing. Warren Peace should know, seeing as he was one.
Growing up was not as easy as it was compared to other kids, but some way and some how he turned out fine. Heck, he even managed to get married and have two great kids along the way so he liked to believe that he did pretty good for himself.
His father's villainous legacy did not bother nor affect him any more and ended with the man himself. The day he would turn to villainy would be the day his fire turns cold.
As for him, the legacy he wanted to leave upon the world was not one of strength and domination. For Warren, the greatest legacy he could ever leave behind would be his children and that he raised them to be good people.
His eldest who would also always be his little princess no matter how old she grew, (Name) was his pride and joy. On the day she was born and directed that first gummy smile at him, the flame-wielding hero knew that nothing could ever be worth more than seeing that smile. The fact that she was born with the perfect mix of his and her mother's quirk was merely a bonus for him, because quirk or no quirk there was nothing that could make him love his daughter any less.
“I’ll make you proud, Papa!” Engulfing him in a quick embrace, the sprightly youth bounded off with a bounce to her step and a spark in her eyes.
Warren’s eyes softened as he watched her go, “You already have, princess. You already have…”
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
Todoroki Shouto was exhausted.
Participating in the obstacle race, cavalry battle, and then the tournament-style matches drained him physically. Plus, dealing with the likes of his shitty father and the meddling Midoriya took its toll on his mental and emotional health.
What he really needed at the moment was a long nap and some soba right after--
"And of course, UA's representative for the goodwill match is one of today's stars himself...TODOROKI SHOUTO!!!"
Well shit.
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
Seeing all those matches between the students of UA had fired you up. You were sure that you’d spontaneously combust if you didn’t get in any of the action and that wasn’t just your quirk acting up.
“...a goodwill match between a student of UA and our new exchange student from Sky High!”
This was it
It was almost your time to shine and show everyone just what you got.
“And here she is, Sky High’s resident elemental, (Name) Peace!!!”
“Show time” You grinned as you jogged your way out and into the public eye.
Were you a pompous little shit?
No
But did you know how to make a dramatic entrance?
Hell yeah you did!
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
The crowd held their breath as they eagerly awaited the two competitors, cheers erupting once the son of Endeavor appeared once more to give them another unforgettable match.
Everyone was practically buzzing with so much excitement and anticipation by this point. Any more and they’d probably burst!
Whereas the half and half boy opted to just walk into the arena, his opponent had...other plans.
(Name) Peace literally appeared with guns blazing, or in her case arms and legs blazing with blue fire. The azure flames coating her body as they propelled her into the arena before slowly setting her upon the ground as if she were some kind of human rocket.
“Hiya, I’m (Name) Peace! Let’s have a good match, okay?” The smile she wore was as warm, if not even more so than the ethereal fire which she wielded with ease and precision.
Shouto couldn’t help but feel as if she would be his greatest and or most annoying opponent yet.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand, he was right.
No sooner had the match started, he already found himself assaulted with a barrage of flames. It took every bit of his energy to deflect her attacks and yet she did not relent.
“Uwaaaaah! You really are a strong one, aren’t you? Since that’s the case, it’s about time I got serious too!” Momentarily halting her assault, the foreign exchange student leapt several feet away from him.
Is this girl serious?! All those powerful attacks and yet she still wasn’t even using her full strength?!
“You know...this is the first time I ever met someone with a quirk so similar to mine so I’m really happy, but...you aren’t giving it your all yet so I’m a little bit disappointed”
Oh great, the last thing he needed was another Midoriya to lecture him in the middle of the match. By All Might, he needed a nap.
“However, I’m pretty sure that you already got enough of a talking to from the green bean earlier so you probably have a lot to think about after all of this” With every word she spoke the (Hair Color)-haired girl walked closer and closer to him. “Which is why I’m looking forward to our rematch in the future soon”
Before he even realized it, Shouto’s world was consumed by a flash of fire and ice.
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
The people in the stands were in an uproar at the sudden turn of events.
Who would have thought that (Name) Peace had the same quirk as Todoroki? And the fact that UA themselves had decided to match-up the two students in a battle.
Whereas everyone else around him was cheering or making some kind of ruckus, Endeavor’s eyes were practically bloodshot as he stared at the female who bested his son.
A female who was the same age as his son, would be attending UA with him and most likely put into the same class, had the same quirk, but showcased power and mastery over it which Shouto had yet to achieve despite being the same age.
She was perfect.
It was then and there that Todoroki Enji decided that his son HAD to have her.
No one else would ever be good enough.
....::::**•° ☸ °•**::::....
After having your win announced, you immediately opted to free your ‘captive’ a.k.a. melt down the ice surrounding Shouto. The poor boy looked a bit frazzled at probably experiencing what his previous opponents felt with their battles against him.
“That was a good match and like I said earlier I’m really looking forward to our next one!” You held your hand out to the half and half boy for a handshake. “Until then, let’s both train and get stronger, okay?”
You know what they say, yesterday’s enemies are today’s friends! Besides, he was pretty cute—
“Marry my son”
And it was at that moment that Endeavor had decided to jump into the arena and make his declaration in front of the whole of UA and even Japan.
“OH HELL NO”
And it was also that moment that made your father also jump into the fray and get in between the Number 2 hero and you.
Both you and Shouto could only watch as your respective fathers tried to glare the other into submission.
A.N. Ngl tho Sky High still has a special place in my heart even after all these years. Warren Peace is also prime husbando material--

[x] IMAGINE WILL TRYING TO SHOW OFF TO YOU AFTER YOU REJECT HIS FLIRTING AND IT MAKES WARREN JEALOUS AND YOU CALM HIM DOWN BY KISSING HIM.
requested by anon + @missamberv
Will had lost the coin-throwing with Zach, so he had challenged Will to charm you, and if he was to fail, he’d buy pizzas for the whole team. Even Layla agreed on the bet, knowing how silly Will was when he tried to charm people and she knew it would be fun to watch. So there he had flirted to you the whole morning, hoping to make your legs feel jelly with his awkward flirts. He had never shown any kind of romantic interest towards you, you thought of him as a friend but not anything else. And now he was flirting to you so much that you felt people around you cringe.
So after he had flirted to you for the whole morning, you told him at the cafeteria that you knew what he was doing and that he should stop. Will, of course, didn’t want to lose the game, so he started to show off with his strength and girls at the cafeteria awed in admiration, but you just rolled your eyes.
You didn’t know that Warren had been following the situation for a while now and when Will started to lift the tables with students sitting on it, he couldn’t control his jealously anymore and rushed by your side.
“Leave Y/N alone, she doesn’t like you.” he growled and you turned your gaze to Warren, surprised how aggressive he seemed. Will looked at Warren and he, seemed to understand what was going on so he lifted his hands up, not understanding why his best friend was so aggressive towards him all of a sudden.
“Calm down, dude.”
“Calm down? You should calm down with your-”
You felt how the situation was going to be intense, so you grabbed Warren by the collar and kissed him. He stiffened at first with surprise, but relaxed soon after, and Will scratched his neck with embarrassment.
After you broke apart, you stared at each other for a long while before Will broke it with a cough.
“I- I lost a bet with Zach and he said that I should try to charm you because of it. I didn’t know you two are together. I’m sorry.” he muttered and Warren sighed as he put his hand on Will’s shoulder.
“I didn’t know Y/N likes me back either. So your apology is accepted, I guess.”
Will glanced between the two of you. “Oh… that explains a lot.”
Everyone was quiet for a while, but then Zach came from behind and slammed his hands on Will’s shoulders. “Well, Will… you owe us pizzas.”
“Yeah, and I think I owe pizzas for you guys too.” he looked at you and chuckled sheepishly. “Care to join us?”
You glanced at each other with Warren, and you smiled at Will.
“Yeah, we’ll come.”

1. What was the first fandom you got involved in?
The first I got involved in? Not wrote, but just... involved. Mh. It’s gotta be One Piece, that’s where I discovered fanart and fanfiction for the first time. First fic I ever read was some self-insert love-triangle between a Mary-Sue and Luffy and Ace and I absolutely loved it because the mere fact that here, for free, I just got to read about my favorite characters and my favorite anime was absolutely mindblowing.
6. List your OTP from each fandom you’ve been involved in.
Holy effing shit this one alone will take A LONG TIME. Okay. Cutting this short to actually involved in, as in I actively read or wrote in that fandom, not every time a ship caught my fancy. And only one OTP per fandom, the top OTP.
Also, alphabetical order.
Ace of Diamond: Miyuki Kazuya/Sawamura Eijun
Arrowverse: Mick Rory/Leonard Snart/Barry Allen
Avatar - Legend of Korra: Iroh II/Bolin (I never really got into TLA when it came to fanfiction)
Ben 10: Rook Blonko/Ben Tennyson (HIGHLY UNTERRATED SHIP!)
Beyblade: Yuriy Iwanov/Rei Kon (my second-ever fandom where I actually got active as a writer! ;^;)
Card Captor Sakura: Spinel Sun/Keroberos
Charmed: Cole Turner/Phoebe Halliwell
Chicago Fire: Kelly Severide/Matt Casey

Digimon: Motomiya Daisuke/Takaishi Takeru

Imposters: Richard Evans/Ezra Bloom
Inuyasha: Kouga/Inuyasha
Jungle Book: Shere Khan/Bagheera
How to Train Your Dragon/Rise of the Guardians: Hiccup Haddock/Jack Frost

15. Is there an obscure ship which you love?
I mean. 75% of the ships I love are “obscure”. I... I always find the very obvious mainstream ships... boring. I mean, sometimes I find them nice in canon, but mostly I find canon to provide enough about them that I don’t really need fandom to get more of it, you know? Or, which also often happens, I find the mainstream ships have more of a very strong friendship-dynamic, or even a sibling-dynamic in some cases, and I just can’t really find it in myself to want to see them in a romantic way.
So, if I have to pick an, as in one, obscure ship, I will have to go with my top OTP. Jagnus. Jace and Magnus literally lived together, in both the show-canon and the book-canon, yet somehow it is an “obscure” ship. I mean, not somehow, we all know why. It’s the unwritten fandom rule of “canon mlm shall NEVER EVER BE BROKEN UP HOW DARE YOU SHIP ONE WITH SOMEONE ELSE”. You have no idea how often that rule has come between me and my OTP. Basically every time there is a canon mlm ship, really.
And this in no way or shape means to criticize those who only ship canon and are content with it, you do you, but I do find the lack of creativity in shipping in fandom where there is a canon mlm ship... really damn boring. Fandoms without canon mlm representation have the wildest constellations of ships, have a far broader variety of content, but when there is canon mlm, the majority of a fandom tends to just happily sit down with it and hug it and prefer not to be creative with the content and the shipping. And as a certified multishipper, I don’t really get that - like, even if you like the canon, you could have multiple ships?
17. Who was your first OTP and are they still your favourite?
My first OTP was Shere Khan/Bagheera, because gods do I love Jungle Cubs. And while other ships I interact more with have pushed it off the throne, if I see any form of Sheregheera content, I am immediately sucked in, no questions asked, no hesitation. I am utterly in love with this very rare, small, very obscure actually, ship and I will always love it and it still is one of my favorites.
23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.
Ooof. Interesting one. I’ve done a variety of PJO fics I’m particularly fond of in previous versions of such a question, so let’s go with something else this time. “The Lost Soulmarks”. It’s, at this point, probably my own personal most reread story. I just reread it the other night, actually. It just - it hits all of the right spots in what I want from a fic. Very often, I write to please my readers, with “What do my followers like most?” in my mind at least to a certain degree, but some things are absolutely self-indulgent. And I should really write more absolutely self-indulgent fics because those are the ones I myself keep coming back to. It has ABO-verse, it has soulmates, it’s Jace-centric, with lots of love, misunderstandings but not the kind where one of them is to blame but rather where it’s due to the circumstances, it’s really emotionally painful, but pays off in the end. It’s... seriously those are all the things I love.
41. List and link to 5 fanfics you are currently reading:
Uuuhm so like five WIPs where I am desperately waiting for updates?
Shadowhunters, Jagnus: “Non-Fat Frappuccino With Extra Whipped Cream” by @kimmycup - it’s my top OTP and my best friend gave it to me but now she is slowly murdering me with the wait for part 2
Shadowhunters, Jimon: “Strings” by annhamilton - I looove this story, only recently discovered it and fell in love with it and am now not-quite-patiently waiting for the next chapter
Avengers, WinterIron: “(Iron Is A) Star Killer” by RayShippouUchiha - a fic I read... a while ago and recently rediscovered with the latest update and am now desperately waiting for more!
Avengers, WinterIron: “An Unempty Nest” by gryvon - same as the one above, I read this a while ago and forgot about it and recently rediscovered it for myself and still love it
Avengers, Steve/Bucky/Tony/Tony: “Second Chance (at happiness)” by SailorChibi - I got this fic recommended and devoured it in one sitting and have since then checked nearly daily for updates because I greatly enjoy it!
44. What ship do you feel needs more attention?
*bangs potts and pans together* JAGNUS JAGNUS JAGNUS SERIOUSLY THEY LIVED TOGETHER. THEY LITERALLY WERE ROOMMATES. IN ANY OTHER FANDOM THAT’D HAVE TAKEN OFF LIKE NOTHING ELSE. THE PARALLELS BETWEEN THEM!! LET. MY. GOLDEN. EYED. BOYS. FIND. HAPPINESS. IN. EACH. OTHER.

Warren Peace x Reader: Interesting
Word Count: 1,083 Warnings/Notes: Reader accidentally choking on food (they’re fine), Reader accidentally hitting their hand on a locker (the pain subsides, don’t worry), and hand holding. Summary: Part 2 to “Interest”, this continues with the Reader and Warren’s interactions, even as the Reader leaves the cafeteria early. Will emotions be explored or revealed?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
Smiling to yourself, you nudged your knee to his twice. Though as you retracted, his knee met yours again and remained there. This should be interesting. Did you move? Absolutely not. At least, not from the waist down. Using and focusing as much as you could on your peripheral vision, you studied him. Sure, you almost bit your own tongue in an attempt to multitask, but at least no one noticed. The only movement that came from Warren was a simple turn of a page. All of this over analyzing was bound to give you some sort of headache at this rate. Or, as fate would have it, you started to cough from possibly the smallest particle of food. Every set of eyes at the table were on you, immediately concerned. Before your hand could reach over your tray, Layla had opened up your water bottle for you. With a brief forced smile, you grabbed it. Within a few moments of drinking water, you were well again.
“Well, that was thrilling,” you frowned. “Are you okay?” Layla asked. “Yeah.” “That would’ve been one way to go,” Zach said, drinking his own soda. “Dude,” Warren glared as Will and Ethan likewise chided Zach. You rolled your eyes as they continued to bicker. “I think I’ll see myself out,” you smiled to Magenta and Layla. With a short farewell, you picked up your tray and left the table. By the time you were out of the cafeteria and in the hallway, you felt a greater sense of relief. Maybe the collective sounds of students had become too overwhelming for you. Making your way to your locker, the quiet halls held a strange sense of calm. You figured it was the strong contrast from its usual capacity of students.
“Then this way,” you mumbled to yourself, completely focused on unlocking your locker. “Ah ha,” you smiled triumphantly. If you were going to be using up time before your next class, you might as well use it wisely. Exchanging one textbook for another, you missed the approaching footsteps as you zipped your backpack close. “Hey,” the clear voice of Warren reached your ears. A little started, you accidentally knocked your knuckles against the open locker door. Silently, you screamed into the void of metal storage. The door swung open to its full extent just as you shut both your mouth and eyes in a grimace. “Are you okay?” He asked, sounding much closer and very concerned. “Great,” you squeaked. “Super durability and all.” Your eyes flashed open however, as something warm gently grasped your hand. Warren. The rate at which you were looking between his hands on yours and his eyes was bound to make you dizzy at some point. His thumb caressed over your knuckles. It was almost too warm. “It doesn’t look too bad,” he smiled at you. “Maybe don’t go around punching lockers as a hobby though.” “I’ll try to fight the urge,” you replied without much thought. He laughed and carefully released your hand.
It was quiet for a moment before either of you spoke a single word. “Warren?” You asked softer than you intended. Matching your tone, he inclined closer to you. “Yeah?” Hesitation overtook you. “Do you…uh,” you sighed to yourself. Did you wanna head outside for a bit? Yah know, before class?“ “Sure. Lead the way.” As you closed up your locker, you wondered if he noticed your change in demeanor. Heck, he seemed to notice, or at least accurately interpret everything. Slinging your bag over your shoulder, your own thoughts made you nervous. What if Warren already knew that you liked him? That you were interested in him as more than a friend? If he did, he was either ignoring or— Warren grabbed your hand in his just as you turned away from the lockers. You looked at him incredulously. “If third time’s the charm, let’s not add to your list.” “List?” “Choking on your lunch in the cafeteria, hitting your locker…,” he leaned in teasingly. You pursed your lips at him. “Maybe we should add knee-knocking to that list.” His brows rose. “Maybe we should. That’ll make three already.” “So I guess that means I’m in the clear,” you added, starting to walk, Warren falling in line with you. “I guess so.”
The two of you continued walking hand in hand. Even as you made your way out of the building, neither of you loosened your hold. Sure, friends could hold hands, absolutely, but this felt entirely different. And as you both stepped down toward his favorite spot, your heart began to race. You had to ask him, or say something! So, when he dropped his bag down on the half-wall, you took a confident stance, if only to keep yourself steady. “Warren, can I tell you something without freaking out?” He turned to you with genuine soft curiosity. You sputtered. “Without you freaking out,” you clarified. “Yeah,” he said, tightening his hold on your hand in the slightest. “I like you,” you said a little too fast, “is that weird?” No sooner the question left your mouth, you regretted it. But before you cold cringe into yourself and fold over like a beach-chair, he spoke. “No. It’s not weird,” he swung your hands for a short moment and you swore you short circuited. “Not weird?” Warren took a step toward you, the tips of your shoes touching. “Not weird.” “Oh, okay,” you finally took a breath. “Would it be weird if I liked you too?” He asked, causing your eyebrows to shoot up to your hairline. “What? No. No. Not weird.” “Good,” he smiled brightly, “because I really like you too.” “You do?” “Yeah.” He looked down bashfully for a moment. “I guess I was being too subtle, but… I didn’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything.” You gazed at him. “That’s really thoughtful,” you complimented. “Heh, thanks.” “And I said that out loud,” you shut your eyes. “What is going on with me today?” “Let’s just blame it on the school today,” he suggested, his voice close enough to feel on your skin. You opened your eyes in time to see his chin. His chin? A pair of lips softly pressed against your forehead. When Warren leaned away, he smiled at your expression. “Well, I can’t possibly focus in any class for the rest of the day.” “Not a single one?” “Not when I know that you’re interested now.” Warren chuckled.
Warren Peace x Reader: Good Book
Word Count: 355 Warnings/Notes: Established relationship, no kissing just hand holding, and a slightly oblivious Reader but all because they are reading. Summary: Reader sits down outside to read a book and Warren eventually finds them. Will the Reader notice he is there, or be too involved with their book to realize Warren’s sitting next to them??
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
A break. Escapism, even. It was exactly what you needed. Being a student at Sky High was a little different than an ordinary school. But no less stressful, you were sure. With a book in hand, you found yourself in one of Warren’s favorite places to read. Anywhere quiet, to be honest. Or, where one could more easily drown out the usual chatter of the other students. It was why you found yourself at the front steps of the school. And as you began to read where you had last left off, the world around you seemed to fade away.
Warren recognized you as soon as he stepped foot out of the building. No one was even remotely near you, as if some unseen bubble surrounded you in your content state. When he drew closer, he saw that you were indeed reading a book. Not a textbook this time. Sitting down to join you, he soon realized that you were so involved with the story, that you had not noticed him yet. He could only hope that when you did come to your senses, that he would not accidentally spook you. He placed his backpack on the space beside him and took out a book of his own. Flipping to the bookmarked spot, his thumb expertly held the pages in place. With his right hand, he reached out for your own. Weaving his fingers with yours, he rested his arm along your thigh. A quiet laugh tried to break through the smile on Warren’s face. Still, you had not looked away from your book. Lightly, he bumped his shoulder to yours. Leaning closer, he spoke softly. “Hey.” You blinked in recognition, returning mentally to the reality around you. More so from the gentle squeeze to your hand. “Oh, hi,” you smiled at Warren. “Sorry about that.” “Good book?” He asked, brown eyes appearing to sparkle. “Yeah.” “I thought you’d enjoy it.” “Thanks again for letting me borrow it.” Warren smiled adoringly and it made you glad that you were already sitting down. “Anytime,” he said, thumb rubbing small circles over the back of your hand.

Warren Peace x gn!Reader: Rivalry
Part 1 Word Count: 6,667 Warnings/Notes: One use of (Y/N) for ‘your name’. The anxious angst of the first day of school. Original characters, including but not limited to existing student characters in the film. Commentary about heroes and hero support. Gender neutral reader and parents. Save the Citizen combat. (I think that's all. If not, I'll add more later.) Summary: The Reader’s first day of school back at Sky High for their sophomore year.
The Rivals to Lovers Series begins...
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
The first day of school. It could be an exciting time for most students. Whether or not that excitement was rooted in joy, depended on the individual. Presently, you were getting ready to leave to wait for the school bus. As all students attending your high school would. No one could exactly walk or drive there. It was an impossible task, considering that the school hovered up in the sky beyond the ordinary citizen’s view.
Grabbing your bag, having already double checked it’s contents, you left your bedroom. Were you a little thorough? Maybe a little. As you made your way to the front door of the house, you paused in the living room. One of your parents, Riley, held a few items within their grasp. “Don’t forget your water!” They smiled, handing you a cold thermos. In realization of such an important detail, your eyes widened. “Oh! Thanks.” “And here’s a snack in case you get hungry.” They truly cared, and you loved them for that. But you could always see that hint of worry knitting their brows together. You were sure that it was a parental thing. However, they had expressed it before. After all, how else was an ordinary civilian supposed to act when their super-powered child was going into their sophomore year at Sky High?
“Make a splash.” Your other parent strode into the room. “I know you will,” they smiled, already carrying their own work bag. You laughed, knowing exactly what they meant. “Should I thank you for the nice weather outside?” “I’ll never tell,” they teased with a hand held up to their chest. “Okay,” Riley sniffled, “one group hug to take away my first day jitters.” “Yours?” Alex, your super-powered parent, questioned them, but reciprocated the hug neither the less.
All too soon, you found yourself following along the path of the sidewalk. The morning sun was warm against your skin. A delight in the crisp early air. The sound of quickly approaching feet made you pause. Looking over your shoulder, you saw your friend, Wendy. “Morning,” she smiled, a bounce in her step. “Morning,” you replied in kind. Stifling a nod, you asked, “Do you have everything?” “Yes,” she laughed. “I only forgot my homework that one time last year. But thank you.” “Just checking.”
The pair of you continued on until you came up to the not-entirely-secret bus stop to wait. The wait was initially for the bus, but hearing a familiar voice, you knew that your other friend had finally arrived. “Who’s ready for day one at the totally not biased high school?” Roland asked, adjusting the straps of his backpack as he stepped over. Wendy and you smiled. “That who, is definitely you, mister cheerful.” He mock scowled at her as he gasped. “You would be too if you just found out that the ingredients of your favorite breakfast cereal changed since the last box.” “How will you ever cope?” You shook your head lightly. “I haven’t the faintest idea.”
Wendy rolled her eyes with a laugh. “Okay, but seriously…I wonder what will happen this year.” “Class assignments,” you offered. “No. I mean like what happened last year at homecoming.” “I wasn’t there, remember?” “Oh…right.” “A good thing too,” Roland added as the bus rolled up to a stop. “I’d much rather not turn into anything this year. Even a variant of myself.”
The bus ride over to Sky High went as normally as any other time. Granted, a bus ride to a normal high school did not include driving off of an unfinished interstate on-ramp in order to launch the bus into the air. Though after over two months without it, it was almost as jarring as the first time.
As the clouds parted, Sky High was unveiled. The school stood solidly on its massive hovering base. The sight ignited bits of nerves from all of the unknown possibilities. And the first initial steps off of the bus increased those feelings a little too much. Taking a breath as you stared at the large building ahead of you, you sighed. “Well, here goes another school year.” Wendy stepped into line beside you, eyes shimmering with interest. “I wonder what powers the Freshmen will have.” “Nothing too destructive, I hope,” Roland said, staring off at a few groups of students. “We honestly don’t need any more school bullies.” “Thank you for jumping straight to the most negative conclusions.” Wendy lightly shoved his shoulder. “Being kicked by Coach Boomer on the first day last year was bad enough.” Turning to walk backward on their journey to the front steps, he pointed at her. “My point exactly. They display their power, get assigned to Hero classes, and then, WHAM: created a bunch of self-entitled snobs who think it’s funny to mess with Hero Support, who is going to be paired off with one of them at graduation and”— “Roland!” You and Wendy plead. “I will speak my truth.” “And no one is telling you otherwise,” she assured, climbing up the steps just behind him. Patting his shoulder, you offered a smile. “Maybe just remember to breathe between monologues.” With a head tilt, you beckoned him up to the building.
Double checking the class schedule in your hand, you folded in back up and slipped it into your pocket. Finding your locker was not going to pose a problem. But even if it did, you knew that it was not something to freak out about. As you passed by clustering groups of students, the regular routine of school days was coming back to you. Though, being that it was day one, you would have preferred skipping a few things. One including the unexpected and invisible cloud of perfume. The strong floral scent ran straight up your nostrils. Unconsciously, you scrunched up your face. It felt as if it had shot up into your brain. Pinching the bridge of your nose, you looked over just in time from the distraction. Your locker.
Sniffling, you carefully spun the dial. After making sure that you had memorized the combination of numbers correctly, you locked it once more and sighed. You glanced down at the watch on your wrist. Almost time. Taking the class schedule out of your pocket, you reread it a few times. You had this need to be absolutely sure. Especially of your first class. There were just some nightmares that you did not want to actually live out.
Right on time, the bell rang out through the school. The sound brought your heart-rate up with uncertainty. You hoped the day didn’t.
Class number one of the day: history. Walking over to the room, you could not help but to wonder. Was there really that much history involving heroes? That aside, you hoped that it would not be too bad generally, all considering that you had the class first thing in the morning. You had never fallen asleep in class before, and you were certainly not going to start now. Glancing at the number by the door, you internally smiled. The correct room. Time for the nerves to ease away.
You made your way to the doorway, but stopped, almost stumbling into another student. “Oh, sorry.” You quickly apologized before you could look at them properly. Will Stronghold. Bringing his palms up, he shook his head. “No, no. It was my fault. You go first.” “Thanks.”
Entering the classroom, you sat down at a seat. Not even a moment later, you found Will taking up the seat beside you, one row over. Will caught your gaze and exchanged a polite smile. “You’re (Y/N), right?” “Yeah. I think we had math class together last year.” “Oh, yeah. I think I remember that,” he said. His red, white, and blue shirt crinkled at the sleeves as he crossed his arms on top of the desk.
Before more could be said, the bell rang and class began. Textbooks and syllabi were handed out and passed down the rows of students. Shaping History: The Super Way. Each approximately fifty minute class was going to be filled with heroics. From movements in history, wars, politics, to just about their overall involvement. It was looking to be an information heavy subject.
By the end of class, you did not know whether to feel hesitant or amused. “I guess we’re gonna learn a lot this year,” Will said to you, running a hand through his hair. You smiled teasingly, more comfortable that one class was complete. “What, you didn’t enjoy History of a Hero last year?” His face twisted in a grimace. “It was…informative.” He said, causing some jittering laughter between you both.
As the pair of you continued down one hall, Will asked, “What do you have next?” “Um,” you pursed your lips as you took out your schedule again. With a few loud crinkles, you unfolded it. “Mad Science Lab.” As you spoke, you looked up to see the exact classroom just off to the left. Convenient. “Well, I guess I’ll see you later,” Will said, pausing near the door with you. “Sure.” You gave a friendly smile before stepping into the next classroom. “Hey, Warren!” Will’s voice carried into the room after greeting his friend.
Strolling to the far end of the room, you made your way to the right and all of the way to the last table. You situated yourself on the stool closest to the window. You wanted to view the outside world at some point if you were going to be stuck in rooms for hours out of the day. That, and if anything awry happened in the science class, you did not want it to happen unknowingly behind you. You took a steadying breath. So far, it had worked in removing the rest of the first day of school jitters. The classroom was still relatively quiet, so that helped. The majority of the noise always came from the student filed hallways. Gotta socialize when you can. From your backpack, you took out a pen and folder. Empty in one pocket and filled with blank lined paper in the other. You were busying yourself with setting it on the black topped table in front of you when movement caught your attention. Looking up, you saw a student walking down the line of tables beside you. Warren Peace. You remembered having a class or two with him the previous year. He was a quiet student. He did not bother anyone or disrupt class. As he sat at the table opposite yours, an in-class acquaintance strode over.
“Hey, looks like we have Mad Lab together this time.” Chloe Evans. Her dark hair grew out over the summer break, the ends hanging in loose curls. You smiled back. “Hey.” “Mind if I sit here?” She asked, gesturing at the stool to your left. “Go ahead.”
As she sat down, beyond her, you saw Warren look up. His dark hair framed his face evenly, but devoid of expression.
“Do you think Medulla has any more crazy crystals to show us?” Chloe asked, resting her hand under her chin. Medulla had shown many kinds of crystals during your freshman year. Almost half of them glowed for one reason or another. There was a green one that you forgot the name of, but were still curious about. “I mean, I wouldn’t mind if there are. As long as they don’t…affect us…in a way.” “Agreed,” she nodded. “I’d rather not pass out in a class again.” You frowned, remembering the object in question. “I don’t miss that one.”
With the sound of the bell, class had officially begun. “Welcome back to Mad Science Lab,” Medulla said. Standing at the front of the room, the large craniumed teacher started class by handing out the syllabus. Powers, gadgets, and beyond. An excited thrill ran through you. There was so much to learn in this class. The more you could learn about the world of the super-powered, the more you could understand and help, if you could. “This year we’ll be diving further into the nitty gritty details of superpowers. To better understand the components of a power. Whether that be yours, or otherwise.” Medulla glanced around at the students, likely knowing who would actually apply the knowledge for…certain means. “And now, for the most thrilling part…lab safety.” A majority of the students groaned. It was not so much that things in the lab could not affect them, but just the mundane routine of it. Like they felt like they were little kids again.
The rest of class seemed to be the model for what would be the rest of the day. Teachers greeting students, and then going over what to generally expect in the class for the year.
“Ready for gym?” Chloe asked, stretching as she stood up at the end of class. “It has been a while,” you sighed. Slinging your bag over your shoulder, you waited for her to move first. “And the freshmen are still being sorted…so I guess we’ll see how they do in Save the Citizen tomorrow,” she added. As you walked through the room to leave, you could not help but to notice the footsteps following steadily behind you. “Heh, yeah,” you said, feeling a sense of too much awareness to how you walked. Peculiar. “Either way, I hope it goes well. You know, like that no one gets hurt or anything. Some students have a little too much…enthusiasm, or built up energy from not doing that sorta thing over the summer,” you said, ending in a lower voice to avoid others’ ears.
As you exited into the hallway, your ears were met with inaudible chatter and the occasional squeak of a shoe. Chloe fell into step beside you, a smile on her face. “Hey, maybe with any luck, we can pair up again. I think we did pretty well together.” “Yeah,” you smiled at the thought. More confidence ebbed through you at the idea. “I mean, if anything, you could always keep making them slip on water or something.” You laughed. “Oh yeah, from Save the Citizen to a slip ’n slide.” “It could be useful,” Chloe shrugged, “or…fun.”
The entrance to the gym was in sight. One set of double doors swung as a few students entered. From somewhere behind you, Warren walked around you both. His destination was the same. “Speaking of fun,” Chloe lowered her voice with a mischievous glint in her eyes, “you could always soak him.” “Is this a joke or a reference about him being able to create fire?” “Both?” She said after a pause of thought. “Ha, I’d rather not. I don’t think he’d find it too funny.”
Warren may be quiet in class, but he was not someone that you should ever annoy, much less anger. There were certain superpowers that were more dangerous than average. The basic durability of a powered person aside.
Once you walked through the two sets of double doors, the vibe changed. Excitement and curiosity. The one and only place to practice and demonstrate superpowers. It was time to prepare for anything. “Here we go.”
As was routine, students filed in and went through the quick-change partition before heading up into the bleachers. You found that your nerves had returned as you waited for Coach Boomer to choose students to start the game. Thankfully, you were not first. Freeze girl and Jason four-arms chose to be the heroes as they went up against Sean the cyclone and Robert reflexes. Not the best of nicknames, but it was definitely one way to remember who had what power. Granted, not every nickname was permanent.
Save the Citizen was in full swing. The bleachers filled with the excited bursts of the students. The shock of a well aimed hit. The laughter from a sudden silly situation. Freeze girl and four arms won a few rounds. It was not surprising considering their abilities. As another round was to begin, Jason took a turn in selecting their next opponents. “Peace and Evans!” Chloe straightened in her spot beside you. “Whoa. See you later,” she said, standing up from the bench. “Good luck.”
As far as you could remember, you were fairly sure that Chloe had never teamed up with Warren. It was beginning to feel like an interesting display of powers was about to unfold. The four students stood ready on the court. After Chloe and Warren were submitted to being the villains for the round, Coach Boomer started the game with a yell.
From your vantage point, all you could see for a long moment were blasts of ice shrouded in puffs of white mist. Everyone seemed to be a little faster this year. Jason picked up the large mailbox and threw it directly at Chloe. With an extra arm on either side, the momentum was strong, but it proved no trouble for her. A quick raise of her arm, and unseen vibrations pulsed forward. Mid-air, the mailbox jerked back toward Jason nearly three times faster, hitting him in the chest and knocking him to the floor in a clatter. Chloe was a force to be reckoned with. When she wanted to be, at least. The cheer of the crowd rose, and you searched for the source of their amusement. Freeze girl was aiming for Warren’s feet but he was seemingly quicker. With each blast of ice targeted his way, he hurdled balls of fire to counteract it. At the rate they were going, you soon lost sight of the match. As the time ran out and the mist settled, the sound of plastic shredding echoed off of the court. The heroes had lost. Chloe and Warren had won…somehow.
Smiling, you clapped at their victory. Chloe was a good acquaintance to have. You would call her a friend, but you never actually hung out outside of a classroom to know more about her. Either way, you were happy for her success.
“Carter! Pierce! Hit the showers!” The coach bellowed, sending two of the students off of the court. “All right…hot-head, Evans, choose your opponents.” The two turned toward each other, but you obviously did not have super-hearing. And at the distance from your spot on the bleachers to the court, you could not read their lips either. Typical for the suspense of waiting. “Davis and”—
Stilling in place, you quickly reviewed what Chloe had said. Your last name. You? Taking a breath, you stood and made your way down court-side. Well, this should be interesting, you thought. You and Chloe were hoping to team up, not square up. Oh, well.
Suited up, you and Damian Davis proceeded toward the contained combat area. The boy next to you fidgeted his hands together, pulling at the gloves haphazardly. “So, uh, who do you want to focus on?” He asked. “Chloe.” He nodded briskly before the pair of you stopped on one side of the court. Glancing at Chloe, you were a little surprised that she was already looking your way. With upturned brows, she mouthed an apology. You gave a tiny shrug and smiled sympathetically at her. Everyone had a chance to play, you just were not expecting to have your turn so soon.
“Hot-head, Evans! Heroes or villains?” Coach Boomer asked from his elevated seat. It was more like a lifeguard’s chair than anything. All to get a good referee’s eye view. “Heroes!” Chloe called up to him.
For a moment, all you could do was stare at the clipboard in his hands, not fully hearing what words came out of his mouth. Three minutes set up on the scoreboard above. Four last names tumbled onto the display under the HEROES and VILLAINS sections. “Alright, you know how this goes,” he began again. “Heroes, you will have three minutes to immobilize the villains and rescue the citizen.”
Anticipation stirred in your gut. Even though you were two months out of practice, you were sure that it would all come back to you. Preferably sooner than later. Hopefully.
“Ready…” You took a deep breath. As subtly as you could manage, you rotated your wrists. The drinking fountain just outside of the gym held all of the water you would need, and more. “GO!” Bending your knees, you expected what you saw. Chloe extended her arm in your direction. The seismic blast was small, but still impactful. A rush of air hit your chest, knocking the air out of your lungs. You tumbled backward onto the floor. Though the armor you wore was effective, it was not exactly a cushion.
“Ugh,” you groaned from the throbbing of your back. Time to play. Reaching behind your head, you sensed it. Water. You threw your hand forward as she watched you intently. The shrill of the crowd echoed in your ears as you sent a thick stream of water at her. She dodged it easier than you would have liked. Hopping up into a kneel, you redirected the water with a few waves of your hands. With a quick flick of your wrist, you whipped the water at her legs, knocking her over. You seized the moment and stood, only to duck. An orange fireball whizzed by a little too close. A glittery smoke chippered next to you, and you side-eyed it. “Got any ideas?” Damian asked, crouching beside you. “Uh,” you stared over at Chloe as she stood. “Can you do a jump-kick thing and”— The puff of glittery smoke returned and you quickly figured out why.
Tuck and rolling to the right, you dodged another fireball. When you sprung up, you ran at Chloe. As she eyed the suspended ‘citizen’, you took initiative. Swirling the water around you, you built momentum. The movement caught her attention or course. And as she raised her hands, you lashed the water at them with a loud THWIP. Strategy and understanding your opponent. It was slowly returning to you. Walking toward the center line, you continued watering down her gloves. It was better than being flung back onto the court again.
Off to your left, you heard an irritated Warren. From the repetitive pattern of chittering and puffs of smoke, you could have only assumed that Damian was teleporting around Warren in strategic annoyance. Though you were curious as to how your teammate was doing, you were a little busy.
Pushing and pulling the water, you and Chloe were at an impasse. She would use her powers to push the water away, but you brought the water molecules back together. Not sparing a glance, you supposed that there was not much time left on the clock. Narrowly missing another seismic blast, you looped water around her leg and tugged at the empty air in front of you. The yelp you heard as she fell, however, was not hers.
“Help,” Damian plead. The fear in his eyes showed as the smoke subsided. Looking to the left, you saw Warren ignite a fireball within his grasp. His stance was firm and prepared. Your eyes widened at the sight. Swiftly, you brought the water over to you to act like a flat shield between you and the oncoming attack. In an orange sizzle, the fireball made impact. the crowd roared from the bleachers.
“Save the citizen!” Warren called over to Chloe. Seeing her scuffle across the floor, you turned to Damian. “You got this.” With a nod, he left in a puff of hazy glitter. You stood and brought the water into undulating blobs to either side of you in a wide gesture. Unexpectedly, you locked eyes with Warren. In the moment of pause, you were both firm in your stance, but shared a glint of uncertainty in his eyes. The back of your neck prickled as someone shouted. “RIVALS!” The energy around you felt different. An unsettling sensation washed over you as a few others joined in. You took a breath anyway, and launched the water at Warren first. He leaned out of the way. Only one sphere of water smacking into his shoulder. The stray droplets caused him to blink, but it did not hinder him too much. As he threw a single fireball your way, you blocked it with a swipe of water. Bringing the water back around, you whipped away another as the quick succession began.
Sizzles and steam clustered between you until the buzzer sounded, ceasing your actions. You and Warren looked over to see Chloe holding the citizen mannequin. “Heroes win!” Coach Boomer announced out into the gymnasium.
Damian teleported next to you, a little out of breath. “I’m sorry. I tried.” “You did good,” you said, giving him an encouraging smile. His eyebrows curved up. It was as if he was not expecting such a reaction.
As the coach called for your team to hit the showers, you dispersed the water molecules into the air. There was no sense in taking the water with you. “Good game!” Chloe praised while the two of you walked away. You replied with a small smile. Though as you faced forward, you caught Warren’s eyes. Was that the smallest hint of a smile on his face? You were not sure, but it was nothing to worry about.
Lunch. It was not your next class, but it was next on your schedule. After a game of Save the Citizen, it was welcomed. It almost made it easier to dull out the surrounding chatter of students as you carried your tray of lunch. Aiming for a vacant table, you passed by Warren Peace. He sat on the side of a table that had his back facing you. Somehow, he was already finished with his lunch and reading a book. You wished you had time to read. The table in front of him was clear. As you approached, so did your friend Wendy, already sitting herself down. She waved you over.
“So, how’s your day going so far?” You asked, sitting in front of her. “Not bad. We’ve just been reviewing a lot of stuff from last year for now. I guess to make sure that we remember it all before moving forward to learn anything new.” “That sounds reasonable, I guess.” “And boring,” she said, poking at her food. “What about you?” You gave a dry laugh. “A lot of going over the syllabus, and what we’ll be doing this year. Personally…I’m really interested in Mad Science Lab. We’re supposed to learn more about superpowers. Like, their details, weaknesses, and stuff.” “Stuff, huh?” Roland walked over and sat beside Wendy. “Yeah,” you smiled at the sight of your friend. “And…so I overheard about you and fireman in Save the Citizen.” His brows rose in question, humored to find out what had actually happened. Wendy looked to you, and then glanced at the person in question behind you. “Something happened?” “Okay,” you sighed, preparing yourself. “He was on the Hero team with Chloe”— “The shaker, right?” Laughing, you enjoyed the feeling. It was a far difference between that and how that student shouted during the match. “She can make things quake and move by vibrations, yes.” “So…?” “I was paired with Damian, he can teleport”— “So cool.” “Kinda cute.” “And, I was against Chloe for a while…until I had to block some flying fire.” “That sounds mildly terrifying,” Roland cringed. “A little. I’m glad I have water,” you said before grumbling, “but then someone shouted rivals…so I don’t really know what that’s about.” Roland paused, drinking to squint at you. “…Fire and water?” “I meant, besides that,” you reasoned. “Maybe they saw something you didn’t?” Wendy offered gently. You shrugged. “Could be.”
Either way, you were not sure. Thankfully stuff like that did not last in school. Kinda like a one off sort of thing, where it only happens for that one time. You did not think you would have to worry about it.
Lunchtime came and went, and as you bid farewells and laters to your friends, you made your way to your next class. Language. And if you thought for even a moment that you would be ready for that class, you were in for a surprise.
Walking into your next class, you decided to sit up front near the door. It was not just because there was a water fountain just on the other side of the wall either. One student entered through the doorway and a smile swiped across his face in happy surprise. ‘Oh, hey.“ “Hi,” you greeted, watching as Will Stronghold sat at the desk to the right of you. “You were great out there today; in Save the Citizen.” “Not bad for the first day back?” You asked with a defeated laugh. “Come on, the way you lassoed the water around Chloe? And you made a shield out of water to block Warren? That was not bad at all.” He laughed and added, “I mean, at least you didn’t fall on your face like I did.” You cringed at the thought. “The redness on you face is gone though.” Will ducked his head down. The momentary embarrassment falling away. “I mean, yeah. And you really held your own against Warren.” “Yeah, well, I didn’t want to become a crispy potato chip so…” “Hah, I guess it comes with paying attention to how others use their powers.” Before either of you could continue, Damian scurried to sit behind you as class was about to begin.
Language for All Super Scenarios. You should have realized how the class was going to pan out to be. The class was either going to be fun and silly, or utterly ridiculous to you. The main objective for the class was going to be learning exclamation for various scenarios. It was proving to be interesting.
The bell ran throughout the school. It was finally time for Free Period. A time to reset, socialize, and further into the school year, a time to study and work on assignments. “Well, that class should be interesting,” Will said as you made your way out of the classroom together. “Golly, Stronghold,” you altered your voice, “do you really think so?” As he laughed, you wondered when those sort of Hero-like phrases would case repeating in your mind. “See you later?” “Sure,” Will said, looking hopeful. “What class do you have after this?” “Math.” “Oh.” He paused before asking again. “After that?” Not having your schedule completely memorized yet, you checked. “Uh…Secret Identity and Heroic Persona. Kinda a long name for a class.” He smiled and held up his class schedule. “Guess I’ll see you there.” “Cool,” you too smiled in pleasant surprise. It was nice to have someone to talk to in Hero Classes. “Later.” “Later.”
Making your way over to your locker, you were happy to have some free time during the day. Sure, it was turning out to be a day full of going over syllabi, but that was still a lot of new information to process. At your locker, you dropped off another new textbook. More like a floppy workbook. Those proved to be difficult to hold at times. At least your bag was lighter again. After stopping by a water fountain to refill your bottle, you sought out the exit doors near the rear of the school. Those set of stairs outside were always less crowded than the main one up front. As you went left, you headed toward the shaded walkway. It was much quieter there. You hoped no one would just so happen to take up your favorite spot there. Just in the shade, with a view of the school grounds. It was nice. Someone was there after all. Thankfully, it was Wendy and Roland. They sat on the concrete with welcoming smiles.
“Hey, guys,” you greeted, plopping down to join them. “Hi.” “How’s class?” Wendy’s nose scrunched up in thought. “Kinda feeling…” “Undervalued?” “That,” Roland pointed in agreement. “How about you?” Wendy asked, looking to you curiously. “Language class…not so practical—for me at least—but, holy exclamations, this is gonna be great.” “The sarcasm here is strong,” said Roland.
The small talk went on for quite a while. Together, you each gave your own insights on how your day had been progressing. As discussion topics lessened, you each took time for yourselves. Retrieving a book from your bag, you read for the remainder of the Free Period.
It was not long until the school bell rang again. After a farewell to your friends, you went to math class. The class was…well..full of mathematics. Afterwards, it was not until the class was ending that you remembered that Will Stronghold would be in the next and last class of the day.
Going around a corner, Damian nearly ran into you. “Whoops! Sorry!” He quickly apologized. “No problem,” you assured, the sound of squeaking shoes echoing in your mind. “Are you okay?” “Yeah,” he ran his hand over his hair, “sorry. Didn’t see you there.” You shrugged, continuing your walk to class. “Neither did I, my back was turned.” “So, uh, what’s your last class? Mine’s that secret identity one.” “Me too.” Relief clearly showed on his face, replacing the uncertainty in his eyes. “I guess we’ll get to learn about having a work and life balance.” “Probably.”
Getting into class was easy enough. Most of the students had yet to arrive, leaving the seat options open to your choosing. Not that the wooden chairs were that appealing. You sat at the first possible seat. Closest to the board in the front of the class, and the only exit. Kinda a win-win scenario. And as Damian took up the seat in the row just to your left, it was apparently no problem for him. Not everyone liked to sit at the front of the class. You understood why. There were many reasons.
As you were taking out a folder from your bag, Damian let out an awkward cough. “I-uh, I forgot to thank you—for earlier. Your idea for me to teleport while I was already in the middle of fighting was really helpful,” he rambled sincerely. “Thank you.” “You’re welcome.” You could not remember anyone ever thanking you in such a manner. Heck, maybe no one had ever taken the time to consider his powers. There was no way for you to know. And you were not about to ask a personal question like that. “I mean, you have the ability to teleport. No one but you knows where you’re going to appear next, right? So, you might as well use that to your advantage.” He rested his chin over his hand thoughtfully. “Yeah…my mom said that I should work more on being offense rather than using my powers as an escape.” “There’s no reason that you can’t use it for both,” you suggested. “But that’s ultimately up to you to decide.”
It was uncertain as to whether or not Damian was going to say more. But when his gaze glanced behind you with a moment of wide eyes, your attention redirected. Among the small influx of students entering the classroom, Will Stronghold entered the room. When he made eye contact with you, he smiled in recognition. “Ready for another class?” He asked. “I think so,” you replied honestly. You held no expectations for the class. But the mystery of it would soon be answered by another syllabus, you were sure.
Behind him, Warren Peace walked straight to the back of the room. And presumably, your row. The expression on his face was simply content. You could only guess that his day was going well since Save the Citizen.
As Will situated himself two seats behind Damian, a student looked to you as they entered the room. “Hey,” Kate smiled at you and Damian, “awesome performance in Save the Citizen.” “Uh, thanks,” you looked up for just long enough before she passed by the pair of you. It elicited a brief look of surprise exchanged by Damian and yourself. An awesome performance? Sure, it was a great compliment to receive, but was that all gym class really was at the end of the day? A display of powers? Before you could think too deeply on the subject, the bell rung, and the teacher took the attendance and attention of the room.
Secret Identity and Heroic Persona. The class was intended to give Sophomore students a head start on creating and balancing their future hero and civilian lives. It was never too early, apparently. From possible, and flexible civilian careers, to a hero’s headquarters. Honestly, who was going to fund and construct one of those? Much less any equipment. Blazers to super-suits, the syllabus listed. You had a feeling that you would be taking, and keeping, a lot of notes. Choosing a color for your super-suit seemed easy enough. Most hero class students already wore a certain color palette. It was a strange realization when the thought had occurred to you. Something like that could not be coincidence…right?
When the long list of subjects were finally read through, class was already over. It was a rare moment that a class did not drag on. Maybe it was because of your growing interest? The secrets behind creating and keeping the secrets were going to be revealed? Though you had found that you enjoyed what was to be the class, you always managed to pack fast. Pulling your bag’s strap over your shoulder, you held this sense of accomplishment. Another class complete. And now, so was the school day.
“Later,” a small voice to your left spoke up quietly. Damian. You smiled. He was still stashing away his things into his bag. “Later,” you said before standing up from the desk. Though, just as you did, you froze. You were staring at black fabric for a second. And as soon as you made eye contact, you were already automatically apologizing. You were staring into the brown eyes of Warren Peace. Breathing in an unfamiliar warm scent, your lungs stilled. The corner of his mouth curved up into the tiniest half smile as you continued to stare. It felt like the longest moment. An eternity. With a subtle nod to you, he finished walking out of the classroom. Soon after, Will Stronghold followed after him. “Later,” he waved to you, unintentionally helping to snap you back into reality. “Yeah—later.”
Finally, you left the classroom and briskly made your way over to your locker. With all of your new text and workbooks, you couldn’t leave them behind. Especially not when some work was assigned. There was always that one teacher. Though you were not entirely happy with the added weight to your bag, you found yourself smiling at the call of your name. Wendy and Roland reunited with you for the end of the day. “Ready to go?” Asked Roland. “Yep,” you said, spinning the dial closed on your locker. “Cool, then let’s go.” With a bounce of her locks, Wendy lead the way out of the school building.
“Day one back at Sky High, check.” Roland slashed the air with his finger. “And how many more to go?” Wendy asked with a teasing smile, hopping off of the last step. “Do you want a real answer? “From you? I—Oh, see you tomorrow, Layla!” Wendy waved at the grinning green wearing Layla Williams. The fellow sophomore was also headed to the buses lined up on the pavement ahead.
You could not help but the sigh contently. A day’s end was sometimes relieving. especially depending on how a day personally went. And even though there were over one-hundred more days to go before the end of the school year, you were hopeful. What could possibly happen?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
Jolting awake to the blaring of your alarm was one way to wake up. Not ideal, but definitely effective. It took you a moment that morning to remember why you set an alarm in the first place. “Oh…right. School day.” And so you went through your usual morning routine. A visit to the bathroom, maybe playing with the water in the sink, and leaving your room in search of breakfast.
Shuffling out into the the rest of the house in your pajamas, you made it to the kitchen. It must have looked like a peculiar dance routine the way you and your parents stepped around each other to obtain food. “Ready for day two?” Riley, your non-super parent asked. A dry laugh seeped through your smile. “Do I have a choice?” “Not really,” Alex, your secretly a superhero parent said, sipping their coffee. “Legally you’re a minor, so…” You huffed begrudgingly into your own glass. Riley reached a reassuring hand across the table. “It’s a new day. I’m sure the kids’ll be interested in other things. They’ll have to be more worried about themselves than chanting about a non-existent rivalry in gym class.” “I hope so.”
A breeze picked up and rustled the green leaves in the trees that dotted the groomed yards of the neighborhood. And as you waited for the bus to arrive, you knew that you would not be alone for long. Making their way up the sidewalk to you, your friends subtly quickened their pace. A rumble of a familiar vehicle and you soon knew why.
“Phew, we made it.” Wendy fixed her hair hastily. “I didn’t mean to trip on the way,” Roland mumbled off to the side. “Don’t worry,” you assured, “I will never leave without you.” His eyes shifted, looking between yours. “That was more emotionally backing than I was expecting.” “You’re my friends.” “And it has nothing to do with anything else?” “That aside,” you sighed as the bus rolled to a stop in front of you. “I just want a more normal day at school.” “Normal? There is literally no one that we know”— The door on the bus opened. —“or otherwise—Good morning—that would ever be considered normal,” Roland stated as you all filed onto the bus.
The noise on the bus was a little louder than you expected. It hit your ears in their excited buzz. Wendy peered around after the three of you sat down. “What do you think happened?” She asked beside you. You shrugged. “Who knows. They’re probably just talking about some of the freshmen’s powers.” “I kinda can’t wait,” she smiled at you.
At your locker, you nearly emptied out your bag. Only the necessities until you could visit your locker again. “Morning.” You turned to see Chloe. An unexpected visit for sure. “Hey, morning. How are you?” “Good,” she smiled, “thank you. I—uh, kinda wanted to ask you something.” “Sure.” “How are you holding up?” Your brows pinched together. “What, since gym yesterday?” “No,” she inched closer. “Your stand off with Warren Peace after school.” The words made your stomach flip. “Stand off?” “Yeah, after Secret Identity class. At least…that’s what I heard.” “No,” you closed your eyes at the memory. “That wasn’t a stand off. That’s not what happened.” “Well, that’s what everyone thinks.” “Everyone?” “Everyone as far as I know.” Groaning, you leaned against the lockers. “What a great start to the school year.” “It could be worse,” she reasoned with a shrug. “I don’t wanna know an example.” “Okay. Sorry about that,” she said earnestly, patting your shoulder. “See you in class.” You waved briefly as she walked away. And while the new information processed and revolved within your mind, you grumbled into your locker. “Great.”
Anxiously, you sat and waited in the History classroom. With your supplies already out on your desk, you fiddled with the corner of a page. “Hey,” Will Stronghold greeted, causing you to look up. It was not as cheerful as the day prior. There seemed to be an air of caution for some reason. “Morning,” you smiled. “You, uh, ready for class today.” Not that you knew him well. At all. But, he did appear to be acting strangely. “Yeah. Are you all right?” You figured that he was either attempting small talk, or there was a point that he wanted to get to. His eyes widened for a moment. “Yeah! Um…just checking up, yah know…it looks like it’s gonna be a busy year.” If there was a point, he never got to it once the bell rang.
History class went by well. Almost suspiciously so. After Chloe had told you about everyone supposedly talking about you and Warren Peace having a stand off, you expected something. Anything. But even as you left class and parted ways with Will Stronghold, there was nothing inferring about it whatsoever. Even so, it made you wonder if people truly believed there was a rivalry.
Striding through the next hall, you caught sight of the tall mysterious figure at the other end. Upon seeing the black and red attired student, you quickened your pace to class. You had no intention of literally running into Warren Peace. Much less in front of anyone. Granted, he did not get angry, but you wanted to avoid it either way. When you finally sat on the stool in Mad Science Lab, you should have felt more relief. At least going through your own routine helped. From your bag, you removed a notebook, the assigned textbook, and your preferred writing utensil. A spark of nerves zapped through your veins. Warren Peace entered the classroom. For a fraction of a second, your eyes met. Brown eyes looked at you with no disregard, almost a soft curiosity. You tore your gaze away, prompting yourself to stare meaninglessly at the class syllabus in front of you. As he made his way closer to his seat, you wondered. Did he know about the rumor? Did he care? Was he putting a stop to such talk, or did no one dare speak of it to his face? Feeling a sudden uncomfortable warmth wash over you, you tried not to panic. You did not want to make matters worse. Reaching for your water bottle, you took a few sips. A simple task. A focused task, blocking out the world. Cold water molecules were within reach. It was calming, familiar. Almost reassuring in a way. But when you were finished and put the bottle away, you felt that sense. A strange intuitive feeling. As if someone was watching you. You peered up in time to see a few pairs of eyes on you before those students looked back around. Sorry to disappoint, you thought a little bitterly.
Entering your line of sight, Chloe made her way over to the seat beside you. “So?” She asked in a whisper as she settled down. In your momentary confusion, your brows furrowed. “Class hasn’t started yet. Heh, don’t worry, you haven’t missed anything.” “How about you and Warren Peace?” “There is no me and Warren Peace. In any way,” you confirmed, wishing that you had lowered your voice a little bit more. An audible flip of a page turning sounded just beyond your classmate. The one in question was reading before the start of class. Chloe tilted her head. “No glares, no”— “Nothing.” “Huh,” she pursed her lips in surprise. “Okay.” “We’re just students in a class. And I hope everyone else can realize that sooner than later.”
The bell rang, ending the discussion. All focus resorted to the front of the room as Medulla entered. “Cloning, morphing, and shapeshifting,” he said. “That’s where we’re going to begin this semester. And, even if you have a power related to either of those, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to pay attention. You’ll be surprised by what you can learn.” He paused in thought. “Of course that never stops any heroes out there,” he rolled his eyes.
Cloning. The basics. Self cloning, the cloning of others or objects. Biological and not. How many per cloning replication. You had only ever seen one person clone themselves, and they were currently in prison.
When the bell rang, you stretched your hand. You were going to have to get used to writing notes quickly again. Or learn shorthand. Maybe one day you could just pass a hand over the paper, guiding ink across the page. With your stuff put away in your bag, you stood. In a word, you were somewhat ready for gym class. If ready meant possibly hiding between the bleacher benches or an entire aquarium far away from Sky High. With any luck, you would get to spectate, or at least not go up against Warren Peace. It did not help to think of that while you rounded the corner of the table, directly facing him. Don’t look, don’t look, you mentally chanted, seeing him wait for you to pass from the edge of your vision. Warren’s footsteps behind you echoed thunderously in your mind. The casual steps beat against your anxious thoughts. This is ridiculous.
Chloe waved and went to join a friend of hers in the hall. Now it was just you. You and the looming— “Hey.” Water sloshed as you whipped your head to the side. “Hi.” It was only Wendy and Roland. “Warren Peace is like…right behind you, by the way.” Wendy leaned close in a whisper. “Wow. Thanks for that,” you gave an anxious smile. “And you’re both ambushing me because…” “Because Hero Support class gets to sit-in on your class. New freshmen, remember?” Your shoulders lowered as you let out a breath. “Good, then there’s a chance I can sit on the bleachers for the entire class.” “Aw,” Roland frowned, “I wanted to see you win.” A laugh bubbled up unexpectedly. “I’d much rather survive class unharmed than win.” Nods of agreement were shared between them. Sometimes school really felt like survival. Powers or not.
Climbing up the bleachers, the three of you did not go that far. They wanted to have a good view of the court, but of course, the abundance of Hero class students limited that. The rest of the Hero Support class waved over your friends, inviting you all to sit with them. They were wide-eyed with smiles and excitement. Sometimes you forgot that their class did not get to have the same sort of classes; opportunities. Then again, they got to practice with a grappling hook last year, and you did not. It sounded really cool.
As the chatter around you marveled in the thrill of gym class, your attention switched. You watched as Coach Boomer settled into his seat, ready for the new day. As per clock work, the bell rung, and the coach blew the whistle. “All right! Let’s start!” He began, messing with the clipboard in his hands. “Stronghold! Peace!” The two filed down the stairs and eventually made their way onto the court. Their regulated armor and guards ignited nervous murmurs around you from the freshmen of Hero Support.
“Choose your opponents.” Before Will and Warren could even turn to speak to each other, a student shouted. It incited, progressively, others to do the same. The word—name—they gave felt like a literal hit to your stomach. They were shouting your last name. Coach Boomer looked over the crowd. His stern gaze eventually returned to the two on the court, waiting. Will glanced at Warren for a moment, and then called out both your name and another’s that you did not recognize. His tone was different than when he ever spoke with you. There was a sort of mask over it. A forced confidence.
Sighing, you partially turned to your friends. “Wish me luck?” “You got this,” Wendy nodded. A matching thumbs up from Roland helped to spark some hope. “Good luck.”
Trotting down the bleachers, someone caught up to you. “Hi,” she uttered with unsure furrowed brows. “I’m Rosana.” “Hey.” You offered a smile and likewise introduced yourself. “Is Save the Citizen more terrifying or fun?” Definitely a freshman. “Kinda in-between,” you said, taking a turn with the outfit changing partition. “But it really depends on who you’re up against.” Rosana poked and prodded at her arm guard. “Um, I can move metal…will that help at all? What can you do?” “I can move water,” you smiled, impressed by the simple thought of her power. “You can throw the newspaper stand, if you want. There’s a mailbox and a bench too that you can toss around.” The sound of your offer made her eyes widen. “At them?” “They’ll be fine,” you quickly assured. Let’s try not to scare them.
As the pair of you stepped onto the court, you got her up to speed. “Heads up though, Stronghold is strong, and can fly. Peace throws fire.” “Fire? But…” Rosana looked to you. Her face held every ounce of fear that you remembered from your first time, and more. Gaining a calm confidence, you nodded in your own decision. “I’ll handle him,” you said, taking your place on the court.
“Stronghold! Peace! Heroes or Villains?” “Heroes!” Will called up. The usual spiel ensued and the time on the board was set. Day two of Save the Citizen was about to begin. No pressure in having a newcomer on your team. You hoped that she could manage. Not so much for the game, but for herself. And as you subtly collected more water than you needed from the fountain down the hall, you hoped you could too.
“Go!” Rosana immediately gestured her hands toward the mailbox to the right of her, and directed it at Will just ahead of her. “Whoa!” Will dodged out of the way. His defensive maneuver led him a little too close to Warren. “Watch it,” Warren warned his friend. With his flaming arms up at his sides, he was distracted. And open for an attack. Water rushed to your sides. At the sight of everything, it looked a little too much in your favor. Pushing your palms forward, you aimed a torrent of water at your fiery opponent. “Ugh!” The water hit Warren’s chest, and sent him down, sliding across the floor, slamming into the wall at the far end of the court. The crowd roared in their excitement. With a few waves of your hands, you brought the water back to you. You kept it in constant motion, ribboning it around you. And as you were making your way toward the center left of the court, you heard a screech of metal. You dared not look over. To look away would be to risk being burned. That was something you wanted to avoid.
Warren picked himself back up and the crowd cheered again. Though, an inaudible chant began, neither him nor you took interest in it. His eyes remained on you, not the students in the bleachers. Igniting a single fireball, he threw it at you. The water within your control slashed at the flames, leaving a hiss of steam in its wake. Gradually, each fireball was thrown at a faster pace. You maintained a determined focus. Calculating and aiming to block every one. “PEACE! PEACE! PEACE!”
Debris flew across the court. There was barely enough time for you to dodge it before ducking under a ball of fire whizzing by your head. Your eyes widened. He was much faster than you had initially anticipated. “RIVALS!” The crowd roared through the gymnasium. There was that word again. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Or worse. Annoying, irritating, and audibly painful.
As another fireball ignited within Warren’s grasp, you tuck and rolled for cover by the large contraption in the middle of the court. The water looped through the air as you did so. A moment to recollect yourself. There was no fondness within you for dodging multiple attacks at once. Especially when they came from multiple directions. Swiping your hands in front of you, you created a flat water shield and stood. Steadily, you walked in Warren’s direction, seeing a morphed image of him through the water. A bright orange light grew in size before ripples of its impact with the water sizzled. Steam meant less water, and you were determined to keep as many water molecules together as possible.
The crowd chanted again as you took cautious steps forward. You were prepared to hold him off until the buzzer sounded, but something moved. Off to your right, Will Stronghold leaped up, his fist at the ready. “No,” you breathed out. You knew that move of his. It was either to dismantle you or your teammate. Redirecting the water, you focused every ounce of it at him. Before Will could hit the ground, the impact of the water sent him flying toward the wall. You could not see it happen though. By moving the water away from you so suddenly, left you unprotected. In the mere seconds of it all, you too were hit. “Ah!” A fireball previously aimed at your water shield, found you instead, knocking you off your feet. Sliding on your side briefly was by no means fun. Especially with no cushion or mat to land on. But why would Sky High have those?
“Ugh.” On the court floor, you could hear the other students counting down the final seconds. When you looked up, you saw that the mannequin was no longer in their entangled doom. Great, you thought, resting your head back down. “Heroes win!” The crowd cheered, and you could not hear your own grumble. —“ and Lopez, hit the showers!”
Rosana trotted over to you, concern in her voice. “Are you okay?” “Yeah.” Sitting up, you groaned and took ahold of her hand as she offered it out to you. With a smile, you stood. “You did good.” “But we lost.” Their eyebrows curved up in confusion. “I guess but…in the real world…or at least outside of school, it’s better to live another day. Yeah?” As you both turned to leave, she thought more deeply about the question. But as your eyes scanned the court, you caught sight of a smirking Warren, and consequently, Will. “Oops.” Warren did not hide his amusement toward Will as he stood with his hair clinging like a wet mop on his head. Absolutely soaked from head to toe. The sight elicited Rosana to smother a laugh beside you. “Do you mind?” He asked with a humored smile, extending his arms out to his sides. With a few waves of your hands, you collected the water off of the floor and Will. Doing so created a large blob of water to be suspended in the air before you dispersed the molecules. “Wow…” Rosana looked on in amazement. “That’s so cool.” You turned in your surprise, the both of you walking off of the court. “Wait until you see everyone else’s powers.”
Walking between the rows of tables, you were more than ready for lunch. You arrived earlier than yesterday. So much so that even Warren Peace was not sitting at his usual table yet. And he never ate school lunch. As you sat down, you hardly had time to reach for the bottle of water when Chloe slid into view. “Hey, you were great today! I never thought about using that Save the Citizen centerpiece as a place to take cover.” “Neither did I,” you laughed. She shook her head with a laugh of her own. “See yah.” “Later.”
Peering up from your lunch, you saw Wendy walking with Layla. Layla Williams was a fellow sophomore, and in Wendy’s case, Hero Support student. Not to fail mentioning that she and Will are very good friends. Heck, they even dated for some time after Homecoming last school year. “See you in class,” Layla and Wendy laughed happily, each going to separate tables. The happy redhead smiled when she caught you observing the pair of them. You had never really talked with her at length, but you smile back regardless. Your friend sat in front of you with her tray of food, a full grin on her face. “Hey, Warren,” Layla chimed up from the table behind you. “Did you hear what the crowd was cheering when you were on the court?” Wendy asked, fixing the collar of her shirt. “Unfortunately,” you said, taking an unnecessarily big bite of your food. Roland, somehow sneakily, sat down beside you. “I’m surprised you didn’t toss the water at the bleachers before you left the court.” The mental image of such an incident made you laugh. You liked the idea. “I’ll remember that for another time.” leaning over her tray, Wendy lowered her voice, “You kinda had Will in a puddle though. That was kinda funny.” “Guess I’ll find out in Language class next if he found it funny too.”
Despite the talk and good company, you found that you did not want to to talk about Save the Citizen. It was nothing terrible, but it was also…not fun for you. “So, how are your classes going?” “Not bad, we”— Roland paused, his face scrunching up as he held a potato chip. “What?” “There’s more salt in this than usual.” His superpower was more subtle. Not visible with the human eye. “Your power is so cool,” you complimented, taking another bite of food. “Not hero cool, apparently.” He grumbled dismissively. The negative reaction was not directed at you, of course. “You could potentially figure out if there’s something harmful in a food or…some other substance. Ingredients to foods and objects? Come on.” “I don’t think ingredients is the technical term for the bits and parts that would make up something like a…freeze ray.” “Still important.” “At least yours has purpose beyond a party trick.” Wendy added, staring down solemnly at her food. “Hey,” you caught her attention, and looked at her with the utmost seriousness. “Turning into a ball isn’t a party trick. Do you know the bruises that you could potentially give a villain?” Wendy ducked her head, trying to suppress a smile.
It was times like this that you were irritated by the separation of the two classes. On occasion, it made your friends think of both themselves and their powers as not good enough. All because there was a certain criteria. A criteria that each student’s powers had to meet to be classified as a hero. The criteria and specifics seemed to be unknown to everyone. Everyone, that is, except Coach Boomer. He had the only deciding vote apparently.
Finishing up your lunch, you busied yourself. Sure, you didd not need to make a mental to-do list of all the assignments that you would need to complete for tomorrow. It was a louder voice from the table behind you that distracted you. “Oh, hey. I forgot to ask. What’s it like to have a rival?” You instinctually froze, wanting to hide and remain unnoticed. You were not one for eavesdropping, but wow, that was a little louder than necessary. That aside, you did not hear Warren’s response. If he had one. “Dude,” Will said with distaste heavy in his tone. “What? You saw the way they fought. I mean, come on. Fire versus water…it’s like the epic showdown.”
Uncomfortably warm, you had heard enough. As you looked up, you were met with sympathetic eyes. Your friends knew every Hero Support student at that table. It was of no question to them as to who spoke. But it did not entirely matter to you, however, you were not going to say anything. Not today. With your bag strapped over your shoulder, you grabbed the lunch tray and stood. Keeping your eyes on the floor ahead of you, you weaved your way out into the empty aisle. You made sure to take quick strides as you avoided any and all eye contact with the students at the table in question. A great start to the school year, you thought, rather bitterly. Instead of simply practicing your powers, now its just a form of entertainment. Then again, maybe it was always meant to be set up that way. Either way, it was not the attention that you wanted. Heck, sometimes you did not want attention at all.
At your locker, as you shuffled through your textbooks, you could not help but wonder. If you and Warren did not have opposing powers, there would not be a problem. No problem, no strangely attentive situation, that lead to such uncomfortable feelings.
The ringing of the school bell jolted you out of your thoughts. Time for that Language Class…
“Hey,” Damian greeted. “Hey,” you smiled. The pair of you entered the classroom and swiftly got to your seats. He leaned over his desk in a hesitant low voice. “You’ve probably been hearing this for a while, but you did a great job against Warren Peace in gym today.” A new internal grumble rustled through you at the mention of his name. “Wanna trade powers?” You asked with a curl of your upper lip. “Hah,” Damian smiled, “I’m pretty sure that’s not a thing.” A few students trickled into the room before he spoke up again. “I have a question about your powers though, if that’s okay?” You swerved in your seat to give him your full attention. “Where does the water come from?” You smiled. Finally, a different question. “The water fountain in the hallway.” He looked on in amazement. “Ha, that makes sense. Like, I know where the water goes when you’re done with it.” “In a puddle on the floor,” Will said with a humored smile as he took his seat. “Sorry about that.” “Nah,” he waved it off. “It was refreshing…after being thrown against a wall.” You gave a sympathetic smile. “Again, sorry.” “Actually,” he cleared his throat quietly, “I should be apologizing to you.” You glanced over at Damian in your shared confusion. “I called your name when just about everyone was chanting it. I’m sorry. This whole rival thing between you and Warren”— The school bell rang. All talking faded as the teacher approached to begin class. I’m sorry, Will mouthed to you before you both turned in your seats to face forward.
For the next following days in language class, it was scheduled to endure—learn about exclamations of surprise. More specifically, happy, delighted, and all around positive forms of exclamations of surprise. Was homework assigned? Yes. Was it going to be one heck of a time? Possibly. It depended on how creative you were willing to get. And all of that creativity was due the next day. And, as class ended, you intended on getting started on the assignment during Free Period.
Strategically, you were waiting for all of the other students to file out of the classroom before you even stood up. You were beginning to think of examples to use for your homework, remarkably, but your thoughts were halted by a classmate stepping over to your desk. “Hey,” they said, your eyes not even looking up at them yet. “Great job in Save the Citizen. With your powers, you can block anything Peace can throw at you.” It took all of your will power not to grit your teeth together. “Heh, at least he only throws fire.” Honestly, you were very glad about that. He was enough of a challenge as it was. The student laughed, supposedly in agreement just before they left the room. “What’s their name again?” Damian asked behind you as you stood from your seat. “Oh, I have no idea,” you said over your shoulder.
Free Period. You were situated in your favorite spot outside. Quiet and alone. At least for the time being, you were sure. The time went by smoothly. Not many students passed through the walkway. With the exception of two who joined you for some time. Together, yourself, Roland, and Wendy worked on and exchanged some of your homework. Honestly, how many ‘golly’ and ‘wow’ sort of sentences could you really make? There came a moment when they had to leave, needing the extra assistance of fellow Hero Support students for an assignment they were working on. You had made attempts to help, but sometimes there came a realization that your classes taught different things.
Hunching over your desk, you hoped time would speed up for once to begin class. “Hey, Will,” you heard one student pass you. “How are you doing?” “Good, thanks,” he responded in kind. “Even after nearly being water blasted through the barrier wall in gym?” They laughed. “Hilarious,” will said, not humored at all by the remark.
As more students began to speak animately, you resorted to doodling in your notebook. If you could maintain a sense of invisibility until the conversation changed, you would be content.
“I still don’t see how you can stand teaming up with Warren Peace.” “It’s better than having fire be thrown at you,” they bickered amongst themselves. “And how would you know? You’ve never even been near him!” “Guys, come one,” Will sensibly urged them to stop. “We know you’re kinda friends with him, but you have to admit he’s”—
Walking through the doorway, was the aforementioned, Warren Peace. Eyes looking down at the perceived path ahead of him, his parted hair blocked anyone from getting a good look at him. You glanced up at the movement. It took more effort than you expected to not smile. Those students talked big at times, but by the lack of coincidence, they were afraid of him. Brown eyes. Warren peered up curiously, and it only took milliseconds for you to be staring at your notebook again. Your heart thumped in your chest and you mumbled a curse at the feeling. Class could not start soon enough.
Secret Identity and Heroic Persona class went well. Your hand may have cramped up a bit from writing down notes too fast though. But not as fast as you leaving the class. You arrived at your locker so soon that the halls were only a quarter full than they usually were. At least you didn’t forget anything in the process. You could not stand the thought of accidentally almost bumping into Warren Peace again. Rumors, you could not handle, no matter how small.
Home sweet home. The quiet sanctuary was one occupant short as one of your parents had to rush off for some hero business. It left time for the two of you to catch up on each other’s day. No matter how mundane, or otherwise.
“And you’re okay?” They exclaimed. Spinning around, they rushed up to inspect you with worried eyes. “Yeah. We have guards and plates on to protect us,” you assured. “I mean…landing on the ground is never fun either way.” They stared incredulously at you for a moment before returning to manage the food on the stovetop. “Let me know if you ever want to transfer school.” “Don’t tempt me,” you mumbled, reaching for a set of plates. “Do you wanna do my homework with me after dinner?” Their brows knitted together as they looked over at you. “Do you need help…or do you want to share what it’s like?” You smiled. “I wanna share some of the ridiculousness that I have to learn.” “Oh, no.” “Oh, yeah,” you exchanged laughter. “Could you give me an example?” “Yeah. In language class, we have to write twenty exclamations,of like surprise. Using the words that the teacher provided.” “Oh, well, that doesn’t seem too bad.” “Like, golly, what a showdown! Or something with wow-wee.” “Oh, man…I couldn’t,” they shook their head with a humored grimace.

Warren Peace x gn!Reader: Rivalry Part 3
Word Count: 3,238 Warnings/Notes: The series continues. A frustrated Reader who is feeling a little inadequate from losing to Warren Peace all week in Save the Citizen. Mild Heroes and Hero Support commentary, original characters, including but not limited to existing student characters in the film, gender neutral reader, and Save the Citizen combat. Summary: Here we continue with the Reader’s first week at Sky High. It’s Friday and the Reader is tired of losing to Warren Peace in Save the Citizen. With some planning and some anxious hesitation, is it possible to win against the hothead in gym?
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~
“Happy Friday!” Roland tapped over spiritedly to the bus stop. “Who are you, and what have you done with our friend?” Wendy laughed. “What? Am I not allowed to express my joy that the weekend is in sight?” “Oh, you totally can,” you assured with a smile. “We just weren’t expecting a whole dance number to go along with it.” “Well,” he grinned, “we all have our hobbies.” “And I’m sure you, out of the three of us, are more excited that it’s Friday,” Wendy said, nudging your arm. “Ha, I might jump onto the bus at the end of the day,” you said, causing your friends to laugh in understanding.
The past week had been repetitive, to say the least. Each morning in gym, you or Warren were called upon by popular demand to fight opposite the other. Save the Citizen was filled sporadically with a rivals chant by many who enjoyed the sight. As the days past, you found yourself growing annoyed by too many things. Overwhelmed. The chanting, the students’ desire to have this imagined rivalry entertain them, and Warren. Warren Peace. The one student that you knew without a doubt that you had no problem or negative connotation with, now annoyed you. The sound of his name, the scorching fire. Your powers were opposites. It was easy for them to cal it a rivalry, but how could it be when he won each time against you? It was not so much of a competition as it was you beginning to feel like a failure against him. And he never said a word about it. Was he enjoying it? Did he see you as a bother, or hardly a challenge at all?
Gradually, as your school day began, your annoyance soured into an anger. It infuriated you more. Fire was the hot, angry, and destructive one. Water was calm, clean, and soothing. Your thoughts revolved around that up until Mad Science Lab. It was then that you began your daydreaming stage. Strategically, you attempted to plan out how to possibly win in Save the Citizen against Warren Peace. At least you had not missed anything important in class while you did so.
The bell had no sooner rang when you turned to Chloe in your seat. “Hey, do you think we can team up in Save the Citizen?” You asked, much to her surprise. “Sure, if Coach doesn’t already have someone in mind. You think you’re playing again today?” You shrugged. “Why break the streak? I’ve played since Monday.” You both stood. By that time, Warren was already making his way out of class. There was no more time for hesitation. You were ready. You had to be. It was time to really practice your powers.
Adjusting your shoelaces, you noticed Chloe shifting on the bleachers beside you. “Nervous?” “Anxious,” you admitted, pulling at the tube socks going up your legs. She nodded in understanding. What you had planned was one thing. Facing the coach sometimes, was another.
“Alright!” coach Boomer called out from his seat overlooking everyone and everything. “I know it’s the first Friday of the year, and you’re a little excited.” He typically sounded unimpressed, likely from previous years as a hero. “So…I’m feeling a little generous today—but”— The crowd paused their delighted chatter. “That doesn’t mean this’ll be any easier. Alright, so who would like to volunteer to be first today?” Beside you, Chloe confidently raised her hand high. “Evans!” The coach scribbled down in acceptance on papers in his hand. “Pick your teammate!” With a stilled breath, you too rose your hand. Your last name nearly echoed out into the gymnasium with the faintest hint of approval at the team-up before he called your both down.
As the pair of you walked onto the court in your suits and gear, you could feel the rising adrenaline. —“and Evans, choose your opponents!” Hardly half a second went by before a growing number in the crowd started to chant. “Peace! Peace! Peace!” Coach Boomer only rolled his eyes. Despite the insistence of the other students, Chloe still turned to you for the final word. With a single confirming nod from you, she looked back up at the coach. “Peace and Pierce!” The crowd roared in anticipation. Coach Boomer, however, mumbled something under his breath. Both boys stood and made their way down off of the bleachers. It gave you and Chloe enough time to plan before they were on the court.
“If they’re standing close enough to each other, can you push them at the same time?” “Yeah. Even if they’re not, I’ve got two hands.” “Cool,” you nodded, feeling a growing sense of urgency. “I was thinking of water whipping at the rope to free the citizen.” “That’ll work?” Chloe asked with fascinated eyes. “It should…after a few tries. More of a slice than what I usually do.” “First time?” She asked, a small smile on her lips. “Yup.” You rested your hands on your hips. “I guess we’ll find out,” she said as the two boys walked onto the other side of the court. The two had barely set foot into the walled arena before the crowd began to chant. “Rivals! Rivals!” You sighed, no smile to be seen on your face. “Here we go.”
Coach Boomer silenced the crowd, his annoyance seemingly equal to yours. The usual exchange panned out between your team and the coach; selecting to be the heroes. When the arena was set, and the board above was properly labeled, it was time. Standing parallel to Chloe, you were ready. You drew the water toward the court as the coach prepared to start the game. You had to be ready. There was no turning back now. Not even when your eyes flicked over to Warren. His stance mirrored yours across the court, and his eyes held yours. Your heart thudded against your chest like a strange alert, and the coach called out for the game to begin.
Chloe threw her arms out in front of her. The clear ripples of the seismic waves hit the boys and sent them flying backward to the furthest end of the court. Water soared over them as you brought the liquid into play. There were only a few short minutes, you might as well make an attempt to cut the rope with what time you had. Chloe could easily take care of your opponents in the meantime.
As you made your slicing attempts, Chloe made her way over toward the boys. Passed the center line. She stood between you and the pretend villains. Slashing the water at the thick rope, you saw both boys stand, and could have sworn that you started to stress-sweat if you were not so preoccupied. Skillfully, Warren threw a fireball, but Chloe easily extinguished it with a single hand gesture. Jason, however, got seismically pushed into the mailbox that he was within feet of grabbing. The flipping and tumbling over and the sound of crushed metal did not sound pleasant. Glaring at the water in front of you, you nearly mistook Warren’s growl for your own frustration. Through more waves and hand gestures, you finally got the water thin enough. Seeing the first glimpse of a fray in the rope, you smiled. Success was within reach.
Warren aimed multiple fireballs at Chloe. Only one managed to get through to her. “Ah!” She put a comforting hand to her shoulder. In her pause, Warren yelled over to Jason. “Stop them!” There was only reason for him to be referring you. And how Jason “six arms” Pierce would stop you was not processable in your imagination at the moment.
From the side of your vision, you could see Jason run forward. All arms swinging in his pursuit, he dodged and tuck and rolled away from Chloe’s seismic attacks. Once out of her range, she was forced to focus on Warren. With a few waves of your hands, you redirected the water away from the rope. The thin band of liquid revolved into a short torrent, connecting to Jason as he launched himself at you. Holding your hands out, you stilled the water, suspending him mid-air in a blob of water. His face twisted in his utter confusion. “What?” Putting your whole body into the motion, you swung your arms around and propelled the water straight forward. “Whoa—Ahh!” He cried out before crashing into Warren with a hefty splash, and knocking both of them to the ground.
Readjusting her stance, Chloe looked over her shoulder to you. “You got it?” She asked. “Working on it!” You said, bringing the water back to your previously ongoing task.
Begrudgingly, Warren shoved Jason off of him. “Try to handle her instead,” he directed his teammate to Chloe with a gesture of his hand. Igniting a new fireball in his hand, he threw it at Chloe. While she ducked under the flaming attack, he ran around her and toward you.
Glancing up at the clock, you tried to shove away the rushing anxious feeling in your gut. Short quick slices to the rope, that was your focus. Half of the rope had been cut through, and with it, a growing sense of accomplishment. It was there, at least until you heard a harsh breath and a familiar whoosh of fire igniting. Turning halfway around, you managed to drop to your knees to avoid the oncoming attack. “Ow,” you cringed. The water likewise fell, caught within your invisible grasp as it cascaded in front of you. A wide ribbon of liquid blocking another two sets of fireballs. Warren stepped around, trying to break through your barrier. The view you had of each other blurred by the undulating wall. It was all about timing with Warren. He could ignite a fire within fractions of a second, but even he had to take a moment to actually aim and throw it. So, within the shortest of pauses as his last fireball sizzled against the water, you pushed it all forward. Every water molecule maneuvered under your command around Warren. Entrapping his entire body and binding his arms to his sides, you could now see the other clearly. His dark eyebrows curved upward, your actions unexpected. But oddly, not angered or annoyed, even as you stood.
“Ten…nine…eight…”— The crowd of students began to count down to the end of the game. Your breath caught in your throat at the sound, but mentally scraped together a follow-up plan. “Chloe!” You called out, entrusting her despite not having her within your sight. Warren growled, reigniting his flame though it quickly flickered out, evaporating the water within its reach. To have all of the water evaporate was a worse case scenario for you. Sure, you could bring the molecules back together into a liquid form, but that would take more time than it would for him to create another flame. Throwing your arm up, you swept the water off of him. It was a final effort to slice at the rope. You hoped that with all of the momentum, it would work. And after a strangely satisfying sound, it did. The water made a clear slice to the last half of the connecting fibers. And with a rush of pressurized air, the “citizen” flew off to the side and out of harm’s way.
For a split second, you saw Chloe going toward the “citizen”, but the sight was quickly lost to you. Landing face first on the floor was not a part of your plan. The thud echoed in your ears, but did not hurt more than the heavy weight on your back. “She’s alive!” Coach Boomer announced. “Heroes win!” “Ugh,” you groaned, making a failed attempt to move. Heavy footsteps approached with an equally threatening tone. Warren. Reaching down, he pulled Jason off of you. “That was excessive.” Once you managed to roll onto your side, your back popped. Fantastic. Directly in front of you, legs geared with white shin guards moved. Kneeling to your level, Warren’s hair hung loose, framing his features. His eyes quickly looked you over before locking onto your face. “Watch your back next time,” he advised as you moved to stand. Maintaining eye contact, he stood up with you. The words he used did not settle well with you. Such a phrase was always in a negative context. A threat. And as his low voice echoed within your mind, your upper lip curled. “Watch your front,” you spat, seething under your gear. With the growing anger warming you, you tuned to join Chloe, who was smiling joyously. “We won!” She beamed over the booming crowd.
Warren, however, stared after you for a moment. His brows knitted together in thought, and held there even after the coach called him and his teammate off of the court. Well, that didn’t go as planned.
“Did you really beat Warren Peace today?” Wendy asked, sitting down in front of you at the lunch table. To your right, Roland scanned you with his eyes. “I don’t see any scorch marks.” Yawning, you said, “Yeah. He’s fast…but I have to be faster.“ Seamlessly, your two friends peered at you with quizzically squinted eyes. “How many rounds did you go?” “I don’t know.” You paused to take a swig of water, much to their current impatience. “But I do know that I’m going to be sore this weekend.” “Oh, wow.” “Well, if it makes you happy,” Wendy began, “you missed some interesting stuff in Hero Support today.” When your eyebrows rose with interest, she continued. “We were getting a head-start into next week’s lesson: retrieving.” “It sounds awful,” Roland groaned. “I bet you can guess who names all of these things.” “Anyway,” Wendy sneered lightly at him, “we were learning how to properly tuck and roll to retrieve an object—weapon or otherwise—for a hero.” “How’d you do?” You smirked. “The best tuck n roller in the class, obviously.” Roland said in a tone reminiscent of already old and known information. “You’re a trip.” “No, that’s what Zack did. The tall one that glows.”
There was a pause in conversation as the three of you resorted your focus onto your lunches. As the minutes went by, you knew it was only a matter of time until one of your friends asked for specifics about Save the Citizen. You couldn’t blame them. Hero Support did not get to attend often. At least they could, especially since they were not allowed to play.
Looking up, you saw Wendy glance behind you. “You would warn me if something is behind me, right?” You teased, gaining her attention. “Of course,” she said with such sincerity. “We learned that last year.” “I meant as a friend,” you clarified with a small smile. “Oh,” she laughed, covering her face with her hands. “Either way, I’d appreciate knowing too. I’m sitting next to them,” Roland gestured a thumb in your direction. Wendy shrugged. “Yeah, well, I was just trying to figure out if you know who was looking at you.” “Me?” “Yeah,” she confirmed in amazement. “What happened in gym today?” Shoving down the emotions as they threatened to resurface, you kept your answer short. “I’ll tell you during Free Period.”
Language class came and went. It was a wonder if you would ever not be surprised in one way or another by that class. If you could have framed the shared expressions that you, Damian, and Will had at one point, you would. Though, once class had ended, you were surprised that Will had not mentioned anything about gym or Warren Peace.
Free Period had arrived, and you were taking your time. The sounds of shoes echoing off of the floor and the usual hum of teenage chatter filled the hallway. As you stood at your locker, you leisurely exchanged textbooks out from your bag. Taking quick strides to reach you, you could practically feel your friends’ excitement.
“So…what happened in Save the Citizen?” Wendy asked, clutching a textbook eagerly. You looked in time to see Roland’s mischievous smirk. “Did you soak him like you did Will?” “No…not exactly,” you reached back into your locker. Not that you needed to. “It kinda started way before class started. Um…I’ve just been felling…less.” “Less?” “Like I’m not good enough,” you stared into your locker, “or at least not doing or trying enough.” “From losing to Warren Peace every day?” Hearing it like that left a bad taste in your mouth. The sound of his name had quickly become quite the irritant. “Yeah. That.” You closed your locker to give them your full attention, as opposed to staring into a metal box. “So, I was planning—daydreaming—of what I could do differently. Find an advantage, if I can.” They appeared a little dumbfounded at your words. “You have water…you could just keep splashing him or something,” Wendy offered. “I know, but it takes time to get the evaporated water back into a liquid form to use it…and by that time, he can throw at least three fireballs.” “Oh.”
“Long story short,” you said, swinging your leg out dramatically in your turn to walk down the hall, “uh, Chloe volunteered for us to be first. We chose to be heroes, finally, and before she could name our opponents…the class did.” “Ouch,” Wendy sympathized. “Heroes can be rather…pushy and demanding,” Roland added. “Ha, no kidding,” you lead the way out the back of the school. “So, Peace and Pierce were against us, and by the time they were on the court, me and Chloe had a plan: she would keep them busy—for as long as she could—and I would try to get water to slice at the rope.” “Slice?” Beside you, Roland grimaced. Leaning in closer, Wendy asked, “Can you do that?” “Honestly, it was my first try. It took a few attempts to get it to work though. That one’s on me, obviously. And…Chloe was greta, but eventually I heard fire behind me”— “Terrifying…” —“and I dropped down to avoid his fire…uh…and I shielded myself before wrapping the water around him. The time was almost up and he was evaporating the water, so I yelled out for Chloe, and used the last bit of water to cut the rope. She pushed the pretend citizen to safety, and…I don’t know what else happened because Jason tackled me from behind…still upset about that.” “Tackled?” Wendy asked as the three of you sat down in your usual spot outside. “That sounds like a foul.”
“Yeah,” you sighed before glaring at the ground. “And, uh…Peace took him off of me and told me to watch my back next time.” “Whoa, ominous.” “So, I told him to watch his front.” Placing her hand on your knee, Wendy sympathized. “I can’t believe he actually said that to you.” “It’s a little uncalled for in a classroom setting.” In the midst of his commentary, Roland pulled out the contents of his school bag. “At least it was only at school…” “Agreed.” You nearly laughed. Dryly, of course. “So…I guess you two are rivals now.” Crossing your arms, you didn’t have to look at Wendy to know her face looked wary. “It sure looks that way…Rude.”
