John Mitchell Jr. was aptly described as "a man who would walk into the jaws of death to serve his race." Mitchell -- newspaper editor, entrepreneur, city councilman and candidate for governor -- was one of the most respected black leaders of his day. [RTD]
A fascinating individual. The Shockoe Examiner has an interesting post from 2012 about Mitchell’s grave in Evergreen Cemetery. Alas for the old bank building, it’s former location now rests under the Richmond Convention Center.

Main Office of the Negro Development and Exposition Co. U. S. A. also Clothing and Gents Furnishings Mr. I. J. Miller, Proprietor 528 East Broad Street
Just down the street from Richmond Dyeing, Scouring and Carpet Cleaning Works!
Giles Beecher Jackson was the first black attorney certified to practice law before the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. With Daniel Webster Davis he co-authored a book entitled The Industrial History of the Negro Race of the United States, where he mentions I. J. Miller gent's furnishing store, with a stock of $10,000.
He also created the Negro Development and Exposition Company, which secured $150,000 to produce the Negro Building, exhibitions by and about blacks, for the 1907 Jamestown Tercentennial. That he was unsuccessful in converting this into a National Museum for Colored People, it was nevertheless one of the earliest attempts for a dedicated museum of this kind. An amazing story you can read here.

Not the same building by any stretch. The wooden church building was constructed in 1899, and served two different congregations until it was destroyed by fire in November 16, 1966.
Church Hill People’s News has a post that discusses the complicated history of this church. It describes a schism between Fountain Baptist and what would become 31st Street Baptist between 1913-1915, how Fountain Baptist lost the property, and how 31st Street Baptist acquired it at auction. One can only imagine the high drama.
The church itself was rebuilt between 1968-1969 at a cost of $300,000.

Junius Erasmus Byrd. History of the American Negro, Virginia Edition A. B. Caldwell. 1921.
312 East Broad Street
The name of Junius Erasmus Byrd, attorney, has for years been identified with the professional and business life of Richmond. His name as attorney has perhaps attached to as many charters of incorporation as that of any other colored lawyer in the city. While he bears an historic Virginia name he is, in the best sense of the word, a self-made man.
In his practice he has specialized somewhat along business and commercial lines and has helped organize and promote what have become some of the most prosperous financial, insurance, and beneficial organizations in Richmond. At this time (1920), he is attorney for the Mechanics' Savings Bank. Mr. Byrd is more than a lawyer. He is a man of judicial and logical mind and has the courage to look a situation squarely in the face, whether it is favorable or not. For years he has been a careful student of racial conditions. He is familiar with every phase of social and political life among his people and is not unmindful of the dangers which confront the nation. He is not, however, a pessimist but believes that a program can be worked out which will make for the benefit of conditions now and for permanent progress in the future. Kirkmyer Motor Company “Authorized Ford Agents” Night and Day Service, phone Rand. 3467. 710-12 E. Grace Street, Richmond, Va.
Ford The policy of the Ford Motor Company to sell its cars for the lowest posible price consistent with dependable quality is too well known to require comment. Therefore, because of present conditions, there can be no change in the prices on Ford cars:
Runabout... $500.00 Touring Car...$525.00 Coupelet...$650.00 Sedan... $775.00 Truck Chassis... $550.00 These prices are f. o. b Detroit.

Kirkmyer Motor Co. 710 East Grace Street. Randolph 3467.
Richmond Motor Co., Inc. Tenth and Broad. Randolph 407.
That nice, pastoral look for Kirkmyer Motor’s is a bit out of step with East Grace Street’s urban setting, but let’s chalk that up to the feeling of freedom you get when you drive a Ford. As for hooking up with one of their peppy roadsters, remember, the price is the price. No haggling allowed.

Nickel Savings Bank (new site) and office of Dr. R. C. Brown, Dentist Cor. 29th and Leigh Streets
Urban Set, a hip-looking bridal shop, owns this building now and says that the wrought iron bars are original. There are bars visible in the 1907 photo, but it’s so grainy it's hard to compare. No shade at Urban Set’s claim of authenticity!
Dr. R. C. Brown was the Historian for the Old Dominion Dental Society, a fraternity of dentists that then became the Tri-State Dental Association and the Interstate Dental Association, before settling on the National Dental Association.
Coincidently, Richard Tancil, founder of the Nickel Savings Bank, was formerly in the medical space, graduating from Howard University with a degree in medicine in 1882, and practicing at Freedman’s hospital in D.C., before settling on a new life in High Finance. (newafrican77)

Smith & Hicks Incorporated Transfer Fire Proof Storage for Household Goods Furniture our Specialty Largest Moving Vans in the South Crating, Packing and Shipping R. R. Trackage Call Madision 971-972 Distributors of White Motor Trucks Service Factory. Mechanics Employed
Large Users Prefer White Trucks The great oil companies, well-known packers and brewers, big department stores, national public service corporations, government and municipal departments, large transportation companies whose experience covers a wide rang3e of trucking service, prefer White Trucks.
They know the value better than any one else and they buy Whites in larger quantities and at a higher purchase price than other trucks command.
The White to-day is the dominant truck of America. In annual sales it outnumbers any other make two to one.
The small truck user, who has never had experience with a high-grade truck, and can form no conclusion of his own, can very profitably heed the example of well-known concerns who know what a given truck is worth and buy Whites in preference to any cheaper make.
The White Company, Cleveland
Smith & Hicks, Inc. Richmond Distributor Service Station: 1609 West Broad Street
The White Motor Company was an American automobile maker that found success outside of Detroit. They started making trucks for Uncle Sam during World War I, continued during World War II, and eventually fell into bankruptcy and the waiting arms of Volvo. (Encyclopedia of Cleveland History)
For the record, while the Times-Dispatch can’t be blamed for the advertising content it was handed, 1609 today is the Firehouse and is the same one that depicted on the Sanborn 1905 maps. Must have meant the Auto Repair “service station” next door at 1611-1613.
