Freezing cold take for A Vision of Shadows, but I really, really hate Darktail. And I really like that I hate him because he's meant to be hated by the reader.

It hurts to read his scenes. It hurts to read him hurt the characters we care about and I find that very cool. I didn't even fully hate Tigerstar when he was still present in the books because I'd sort of gotten fond of him. Yes, he was evil and cruel but he was also pretty familiar and kind of a fun character.

But we can't tie Darktail to first arc nostalgia because he's a new villain who doesn't even have any background related to the clans (or maybe he does? I don't know, I'm still reading Shattered Sky). We haven't seen much of him but we've seen that he's a huge asshole. And we can't really justify his actions, either. He's just bad. He's awful. And I like that because it makes me want to tear up the pages where his name appears and set the remaining bits of paper on fire.
