#anytime I see any shots from this new live action movie it's just baffling to me how terrible it is #why would put muddy colored cliffs behind your protagonists that have muddy colors themselves???? #it all blurs together I can barely make out the shapes in the small preview
Yeah, 2010 has Toothless and Hiccup clearly contrasted against the sky and framed by the cliffs and trees, their shapes are clear and body language easy to read. The luminosity contrast becomes even more obvious when you look at the screenshots in greyscale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or if you blur them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2010 automatically guides your eye to what's important in this shot. 2025 LA on the other hand... the thing that stands out the most at first glance is, uh, the waterfall in the background probably?
There are other shots in the LA trailer that are also obviously lifted directly from the cartoon, but sometimes they just...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Congratulations, you have the centerpiece of your scene, this big, spiky, BRIGHT RED DRAGON taking up like half the screen, and you've managed to make it FADE INTO THE BACKGROUND!
In HTTYD 2010, the hue&saturation contrast of bright red against cool grey is making Hookfang really pop, and there's more luminosity contrast too. 2025 meanwhile is... flat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the camera angle and (simulated) focal length in HTTYD 2010 helps communicate that Hookfang isn't as threatening as he could be, and Hiccup at this point is (temporarily) in control of the situation. But the low angle that makes Hiccup look comparatively taller, also makes the shot more dynamic, like the balance could shift at any moment, and it makes Hiccup feel more like a potential, immediate target, too.
The camera angle in the 2025 LA remake trailer is just... there. It's better than some other remade 2025 shots we've seen (at least the important parts aren't weirdly almost out of frame, and the lines of sight of Hiccup and Hookfang guide the viewer's eye between each other instead of somewhere entirely random), but it's a lot... less... than the original.
also can i just talk more about how awful the cinematography/shot composition is in a lot of the live action httyd stuff we've seen so far. idk maybe i'm just missing something - i don't have any sort of formal education in filmmaking or anything like that - but a lot of the shots so far seem to be a straight downgrade from the original film. like it honestly seems like they don't know what they're doing. it's truly baffling
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ e.g., one of my favorite shots from forbidden friendship. in the original, both toothless and hiccup are positioned close to the center of the frame. there's a gap between them, which may seem like a small detail but it's one that means a lot i think. the gorgeous pink sky is behind them, while the surrounding cliffs and trees frame them. toothless' perked ear plates are fully visible, allowing the audience to get a better idea of the curiosity he's feeling. his wings are also cleverly hidden/tucked away behind his back, giving him an incredibly strong silhouette.
compare that to the live action version. hiccup is centered, with toothless close beside him - parts of his left wing and leg are literally behind hiccup. instead of them being against the sky with the cliffs and trees framing them, the cliffs/trees are directly behind them. the entire thing is more zoomed in, leading to things like toothless' ear plates being mostly out of the frame. toothless' silhouette also isn't as strong with his wings visible like that.
idk. it just looks bad. and don't even get me started on what they've done to the downed dragon lmao

Amazing Burglar or Awful Security?
I was thinking about the security on the Edge and how genuinely awful it is at keeping a certain Berserker chief away. It's honestly hilarious to me because Dagur just shows up out of the blue without even trying to hide. In "Family on the Edge," he had no idea the other Riders hadn't been told about him, so there was no sneaking involved. He just strolled on in (with a ship I'm assuming since he was sans dragon at the time) and didn't get noticed until Hiccup went back home. The guy even proceeded to stay the night without any of the Night Terrors being like, "Who the heck is this dude?" and causing a scene. He shows up easily for "Gold Rush" too and makes his presence known before they see him. Then in "Searching for Oswald...and Chicken," he shows up and gets through whatever security Astrid said she set up. So...I guess it's just bad. Or he's just that good where he can consistently get on the Edge. Heck, why limit it to the Edge? He was sneaking onto Berk too when he put the Dragon Root in the arena and around Outcast island when he wanted to get the Skrill back. I'm realizing an underappreciated skill of Dagur's is stealth. He'll just be behind you (might be right now) and you won't know unless he wants you to. It's as scary as it is impressive.

Alright I'm gonna watch the travesty that is the live action httyd. So I'm taking notes like for Lilo and Stitch, and I have the original script, and the original movie pulled up, just to be sure I'm not forgetting anything despite the original httyd being seared into my retinas since age 10
TL;DR written post-watch cause this became like 2,000 words, It's bad, it's horrendous. Pretty much everyone is slightly to horribly out of character, they're all mean and/or stupid. It's mostly the same movie, but every change is for the worse, and everything that's stayed the same is acted and directed MUCH worse.
Berk isn't their home anymore it's just some random island close to the nest, the Red Death isn't fireproof, they still fire into her mouth but there's no reason for it now unless you've seen the original, Astrid is emotionless through the whole thing, none of her anger, passion or any other emotion is here.
Toothless and the other dragons are much less intelligent. The CGI looks like a mobile game ad most of the time. Overall, not a single good thing here, don't bother watching it, let alone giving it money. Go watch the original, or read the books and ignore this fucking insult to animation and to How to train your dragon.
Right off the bat:
Tumblr media
"This, is Berk" no the fuck it isn't, that's a moldy pride rock. It's so ugly and, small.
Oh, the sheep isn't even real. What too pussy to use a real sheep? It's a fake one attached to a bell like someone wouldn't notice a real sheep bleating or THE GIANT FUCKING DRAGON TAKING IT. I guess the point was they're keeping the sheep safe from the dragons, then why put out bait? If the dragons don't see sheep they won't attack? Probably? Man idk, it's stupid
The opening monologue too, is just. Soulless. More brief and not an ounce of sarcasm or dry humor. Y'know, a big part of Hiccup's way of speaking
Stoick so far is alright. He's not NEARLY as imposing as his animated counterpart, didn't even recognize him at first. Even with real human proportion limitations, still think they could've done more in the costuming department, at least added some height to him cause rn Hiccup is like, up to his shoulder which just feels wrong
CGI so far looks horrendous, a shot of the dragons setting fire to the village looks like a fucking mobile game ad
Hiccup going to Gobber and that whole little scene is much more clunky here. They've removed basically all the sass and jokes from the scene, from BOTH sides. "They need toothpicks don't they" and "little-er" are gone The latter probably because they knew they severely miscast Hiccup cause this guy doesn't look like the scrawny little loser Hiccup is at the beginning of movie 1
Astrid coming out from smoke instead of walking in front of an explosion is just lame and screams "we didn't have the budget"
And on Astrid, Hiccup going on about how cool she is instead of just the delivery of her name letting us know he has a thing for her, is keeping up the trend of these fuckass remakes really struggling with subtlety and visual storytelling
Alright so Hiccup is a straight up moron now
First of all they're putting WAY too much emphasis on the Astrid thing, it wasn't acknowledged at all until a couple teasing comments from the CHILDREN in the arena, NOT Gobber Second of all, the launcher thing he built. Why the fuck does he firemit twice on purpose, at his fellow vikings? In the original it was an accident, he patted it, the mechanism was too sensitive and fired and hit a viking ON ACCIDENT
All the acting is so incredibly, and I hate using the word but there's no better one I can think of, cringe. It feels like a youtube skit more than a movie
And the delivery is horrible, especially on Gobber. In the original you could tell him and Hiccup were at odds but they still liked each other, Gobber came across as a silly uncle figure, who was still protective, and only became serious when he saw Hiccup was a danger to either himself(running out into a fight he wasn't ready for) or others(accidentally knocking a guy out with his launcher) here, Gobber seems to barely stand Hiccup and Hiccup is no better towards him
Okay just don't tell us the Monstrous Nightmare sets itself on fire, alright, HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THEN?? (I know because I'm me, but for general audiences it's a weird omission, if I didn't know, I'd assume it was just, accidentally on fire, not something it deliberately did) they didn't bother introducing the rest of the teens either, Hiccup calls them the fire brigade and focuses solely on Astrid, we don't learn the others names till later
The whole dragon attack is so slow and anticlimactc, and this is the last time I'm mentioning Hiccup's delivery, because it's awful. End of story, slow, over-exagerated, not an ounce of the charm and sass Jay Baruchel brought to the role
No talking fishbone rant and Hiccup imitating Stoick. 0/10
So, Berk is no longer their home. BERK IS NOT THEIR HOME. It's just, close to where a "key dragons nest" is… They're setting up for the 3rd movie where they just ditch Berk so it's not a plot hole aren't they? It just, gives so much less weight to everything. They're not defending their generational home they're just, camping out to kill dragons
This was no doubt done to explain the POC vikings, as "the best warriors from all around the world" but. They didn't need to do that. It's a fucking fantasy dragon movie, especially for the background characters, cast whoever you damn well please, you don't need an in-universe explanation that ruins the lore and significance of the main location
The great hall is also tiny and cramped now
Gobber doesn't stay to talk to Stoick, Stoick has to stop him from leaving the hall. Gobber is just an ass here. Fuck this whole movie, bury the script with some C4 and light it up
Okay they mention Valka, by name, that's a good thing, but it's the least I'd expect now that they know exactly where the story is headed
WHY IS EVERYTHING SO BRIGHTLY LIT THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST TENSE SCENES IN THE WHOLE STORY AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE GODDAMN TELETUBBIES HILL UP IN HERE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overzealous, excited teenager "I have slain this mighty beast!" VS generic protag guy "I DID IT!"
The shot of the reveal of Toothless' open eye gives me goosebumps, every single time. The atmosphere, the score, the slow camera movement and angle. None of that is here, it's just, oh, it's open btw here he is
Okay more of every character being meaner for no reason, why did Hiccup start to leave? In the og he immediately went to cut Toothless loose. Here he has to hear a whine then go back. Jackass
And Toothless doesn't pin Hiccup because the CGI characters interacting with the live humans is expensive and hard to pull off. Also GOD he's so SLOW and just. He feels like he shouldn't be able to lift off the ground, all his speed and agility are gone, and BCAUSE of said sluggishness we linger long enough on his tail to SEE IT MISSING HALF OF THE TAIL FIN BEFORE THE ACTUAL REVEAL. FUCK THIS MOVIES' COMPOSITION AND DIRECTION IS ASS
He doesn't even faint, he doesn't even stumble he just kinda. Looks at Toothless flying away, and sighs. He doesn't look like a guy who got attacked by the scariest dragon they've never even seen, he looks like a guy who saw his car getting towed
The conversation between Stoick and Hiccup is alright I guess, just a worse clunkier version of the original with worse delivery, not much more to say
Ooookay, dragon training, dunno what "trial of flame" is, dumb, will be ignoring it. They seem to be cause they call it dragon training half the time, anyway. Banter is OK, however, "daddy pulled some strings" is such a dumb line. Second, Tuffnut sounds so whiny and him and Ruffnut being held back, 4 years, makes them 19-20. That's. A pointless, mildly weird inclusion
They act childish as ever but they're that much older than the other teens. Again, utterly pointless
"Will you stop that?! You big bag of wool." And so, insulting Fishlegs, for his weight, was absolutely necessary apparently? Isn't this supposed to be the modern progressive remake that "fixes" and "improves" aspects of the original??
As far as I remember, Fishlegs was never made fun of for his weight, not in the first move at least. I don't wanna say with certainty without checking. But in this moment he definitely wasn't, and it further makes Gobber just, a jackass in this version
So. Gobber takes Hiccup's axe, emphasizing how important a shield is. Then Hiccup has to awkwardly tap his shield with his hand to make noise while everyone else still has their weapons?? Why??
Yet again I find myself, asking WHY. Why did we need the dragon manual scene to go on for so long just so Hiccup can simp for Astrid some more? So Astrid can further emphasize how Berk isn't their home and they don't care about it? So we can learn Hiccup and Stoick's house, their home, the home they lost Valka in, the home they cherished. Is like the viking white house and if one of them isn't chief they get kicked out?? The fuck is wrong with this movie??
Unsurprisingly the scene of Hiccup reading the manual is short, lame and without a fraction of the atmosphere and creepiness of the original. It's like he's reading a damn instruction manual and skipping to the part he needs to read
Seeing the ships get attacked is pretty neat, alright that one is a plus
They put the hesitation before the nose touch back, good. But forbidden friendship just, doesn't hit the way it does in the original, it's kinda. Boring, didn't make me feel a damn thing
Okay all the "us girls gotta stick together" is so fucking annoying YOU CAN SHOW THEM BEING FRIENDS WITHOUT POINTING IT OUT WITH OVERUSED MODERN TERMS. Show don't tell, dammit
Gothi standing there moving beads is also stupid and pointless, and her design isn't nowhere near as charming as the original(design being casting and costume)
Exchanging dragon nip for dandelions is also stupid
"Who's a good boy??" Ah so Toothless is in fact, a dog now. Good to fucking know. He seems so much less intelligent here as a whole
Test flight is just bad, bad camera work, bad cgi, bad everything. And no Toothless accidentally running Hiccup through fire in the end. Why remove it it was such a fun little gag
If I don't directly mention a scene, assume it's the same, but worse. That's how a majority of them are, same script with minor alterations and worse acting and animation I just don't have anything to say on those
Not faulting Nico Parker, she's doing the best with what she's got, but what she's got is a bad script and bad direction. Because Astrid seems so cold, and emotionless. Seeing the Red Death and saying "what is that" wtih a complteltly nerutral expression, she sounds like she's asking about an ugly shirt her friend is wearing
Also how do you manage to make the northern lights ugly? How is that possible? Beautiful blues teams and purples vs puke green
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Don't get inloved, my dad respects you too much" VS "make sure they don't find Toothless" So this Hiccup cares more about Astrid's reputation, not her, her REPUTATION, than he does about Toothless' life. Got it. SIMP. FAILTHY FUCKING SIMP What have they done to my boy.
Okay there was one neat shot of Hiccup's hand matching Toothless' paw when they're trying to climb up
"ASTRID GET BACK HERE. THAT'S AN ORDER." So, he's concerned about flaunting power and being right, not just, getting a kid out of danger. He's upset they're not listening to him, not that they could get hurt
Fight between Toothless and Hookfang is extended and I guess it's decently cool, but that, and the longer fight between Toothless and Stoick, just makes everything slower and more anticlimactic. The original was quick and snappy, this is just "we're filling time"
"You're not one of us. You're not my son." Cannot BEGIN to compare to "You're not a viking. You're not my son." Seriously the delivery, the line itself, hits nowhere as hard. I guess bringing up Valka is alright but feels a bit forced ngl
WHY DOES TOOTHLESS HAVE A FUCKING AMERICAN FOOTBALL CROTCH GUARD ON HIS FACE LMAO WHAT IS THAT
Tumblr media
Alright final battle, mostly the same but worse, HOWEVER, The occupational hazard line was removed, this one and the setup for it earlier
And Stoick, doesn't say "I'm sorry" nor does he tell Hiccup he doesn't have to go. No no he says he was "just trying to protect him" and that whatever happens up there he's proud. He doesn't apologize, he doesn't take accountability for being wrong
They got rid of "not fireproof on the inside" with the terrible terrors, and therefore, no explanation as to how or why Hiccup decided to fire inside the Red Death's mouth. Especially considering SHE'S NOT FIREPROOF. THEY BLEW HOLES IN HER WINGS AND FLEW THROUGH THEM FOR A COOL VISUAL, COMPLETELY FUCKING RUINING THEIR WHOLE LORE
(EDIT) I was mistaken, someone pointed this out and I went back to rewatch. In the original they blow holes in her wings too, but there it's much more subtle and it's small holes that get torn apart by wind instead, in the remake they just blow massive firey holes in her wings
Stoick apologizing and waiting to see Hiccup alive is alright, but they really should've kept it a father son moment, Astrid doesn't need to be there. Also, just he's alive. No "you brought him back alive" he still thanks Toothless later but that line was a nice acknowledgement to what he did
Well, the rest of it, is just the same, but worse. They acknowledge that Stoick and the others rode back on dragons, I guess that makes sense, it's alright
Snotlout has a non-subplot with his dad which was done much better in the show, not much else to say on that
And that was it. The live action How to train your dragon remake. In a word. Soulless. The same but worse. What they do change is for the worse, not a single person aside from Gerard Butler was cast appropriately, nor designed as far as costuming goes, they bend over backwards justifying the changes they've made and the movie is much worse for it
Every single character is also, meaner for some reason. Only Fishlegs is about the same but more whiny somehow. It's just. Bad, no other way to say it, it's bad. Gobber is the worst offender, he's an asshole to Hiccup, to the other kids, everyone. Hiccup is also so unlikeable and a genetic protagonist with bad delivery. By the end I couldn't give less of a shit if he made it or not cause he was annoying more than anything
Toothless is significantly less intelligent, agile and cool than in the original. Same goes for all the dragons honestly. Trash heap with bad cgi, bad acting and a bad script. I'll be happy when it's forgotten. And I hope the sequel gets canceled, but general audiences will make this at least an 800mil movie so that probably won't happen

Can you do poly Hiccup and male! Astrid x reader from httyd? Where the reader is from one of the islands Hiccup was discovering with toothless.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You want me to do what?!" you ask the two viking males in shock, trying to understand if they were speaking for real or just jesting with you.
You have met Hiccup and Astrid when they landed on your island with their dragons.
And you were the only brave to approach them and inquire if they are here to hurt your people.
After Astrid explained that they are simply exploring new places and that their dragons are harmless, you quickly became friends.
They would stay at your island for three months, and through those three months you have built a strong friendly connection with them.
Or at least you were the only one who thought it was friendly.
"We want you to return back with us to our home and become our bride" Hiccup repeats cheerfully as if it was a simple request.
"Marry both of you as in me having two husbands...?"
"Yes" Astrid confirmed, his eyes narrowing at your discomfort and hesitation.
The idea is absurd and unheard of especially if you are from a society that forbids such acts.
It isn't even allowed in viking society for a woman to have more than one husband.
But Hiccup is the next chief of the Hooligans and he can make things work between the three of you.
"I can't do that, this is insane and impossible" you exclaim in shock.
Toothless nods his head, agreeing with you, causing Hiccup to give him a warning glare.
"We spend three months together inside of your house, living, eating, and sleeping in that same house, what difference would it make if we got married?"
Hiccup is trying to convince you, but you stand your ground.
"A lot of difference"
Astrid smirks as you stutter out the words, your face heating up.
"You really think you have a choice in this matter? We will marry you whether you want to or not" the blond asserts, walking towards you to take you by force with him and Hiccup.
You back away before starting to run, however the two boys manage to catch up with you.
"Please, let me go, I don't want to" you plead with them, fear apparent in your glassy eyes.
"We promise to make you have the best time in the marriage"
Hiccup said, playfully, forcing you to get up on Toothless.

let’s talk about the hidden world
not the entire movie, because it would take forever to point out every problem in that monstrosity, but just the concept of the hidden world itself. there are many inconsistencies but i’ve narrowed it down to a few points.
1. it introduces some sort of “magic” into the httyd universe
let me be clear, there has never been any sort of “magic” in the httyd universe. dragons are not these mystical, magical creatures that httyd 3 makes them out to be, they are just normal animals. they think of dragons how we would think of lions or bears.
this is the issue with the writers suddenly trying to bring the books into the picture after completely ignoring them for a decade. they tried to incorporate the books into the third movie, but at this point, the books and the movies are so vastly different that they take place in completely different universes with completely different rules and completely different worldbuilding. the book universe has some elements of magic in it, the movie universe doesn’t, so the idea of a hidden world at the end of the earth where all dragons come from might have fit if it was included in the book universe (which it wasn’t even), but it just makes no sense in the movie universe, so them basing the whole ending of the movie and the whole concept of the hidden world on nothing but the prologue of the first book (yes i’m convinced that that’s the only part of the books they actually looked at) is so stupid and caused the writers to have to destroy everyone’s character to even make that ending work (which it still doesn’t).
2. the earth is flat now???
they have been making flat earther jokes throughout the entire franchise, it’s a running bit and it’s funny every time. but it’s not funny anymore if that’s what actually happens. the whole joke is that even these smart people think the earth is flat because they’re vikings, but if they’re right then it’s not even a joke anymore.
the movie httyd universe has always been just our normal universe but with dragons, but with them suddenly making the earth flat and adding in the hidden world, that completely changes everything we know about this universe up to this point.
3. stoick knows about the hidden world
stoick says in one of the flashback scenes that someday he wants to find the hidden world and “seal it up” to stop the fighting, and it even pretty much says that that was his mission the entire time. but, we know that that’s not true because he directly says what his mission is in the first movie, which was to “find the nest and destroy it” so the dragons will “find a new home” and stop bothering them. he’s not talking about the hidden world, he’s talking about the specific nest that the dragons that have been attacking them are coming from. he doesn’t know where the dragons come from and he doesn’t care where the dragons come from, he just wants them out of his face. he doesn’t see the dragons as the creatures that they are, he still just sees them as monstrous beasts that need to be killed for the protection of his village. he never cared about peace because he never thought peace was an option. if he did then the first movie would’ve have happened because he would have listened to hiccup in the first place. hiccup (and valka, but more on that later) is the only one who believed that peace was possible because he’s the only one who was able to see the dragons for what they really were. that’s literally the whole point, that everyone looked down on hiccup because of his differences when those differences are the reason he was the only one who could finally stop the war.
him being so different from valka is important, too. a lot of people overlook that and act like he’s exactly like her and the exact opposite of stoick when it’s much more complex than that (see my valka defense post). people blame valka for leaving but if you think about it you see that even if she stayed she would not have been able to do what hiccup did. she didn’t create peace with the dragons, she became one of them. hiccup was the only one who thought that humans and dragons really could coexist. httyd 3 makes it look like stoick thought that stopping the fighting was possible, when hiccup (not even valka) was actually the only one with that mindset at that point.
the fact that hiccup is so different from both his parents and yet so similar is a crucial detail in not only the plot but also his character in general, and the fact that they changed stoick’s mindset and tried to gaslight us into thinking that that’s how he was the whole time is crazy.
4. they find the hidden world almost immediately after they start looking for it
hiccup and astrid literally find it by accident while looking for toothless. they and the gang have been exploring very far outside of the archipelago for the entirety of race to the edge and they never even found valka’s sanctuary. valka has been out there for 20 years and she never found it. stoick suddenly has been searching for this thing his entire life and he hasn’t found it. and they find it just like that? boring. yawning. sloppy. lazy. they clearly couldn’t think of a more interesting way for them to have found it so they just decided to take the easy way out. idk how long it takes for them find it from the time that they leave berk, but it’s fast. way too fast.

A day in the life of Mason, httyd edition
Considering our days can be wildly different, rather than an average routine, I'll describe actual day from my last shift there💚
Most importantly, my coffee picture of the day
Tumblr media
Reminder: our dr is based on how to train your dragon, none of the original cast exists there, we don't live on Berk, and there are likely many dragon species that don't exist in the movies!
We woke up, around an hour before sunrise. Which would have been a little before 8am (winter). The fireplace in our room was almost burned out, and I was laying on my husband's chest. We woke up from the sound of children's feet running around outside of our room, for a moment just laying there and enjoying the last bits of our slumber and peace.
Our twins (and in that reality our only sons), were whispering rather loudly, clearly trying not wake us up, and I remember hearing Daeron chuckle quietly. We had our guess what they were doing, they like to sneak in their dragons into their room, especially now that said dragons sleep besides our house.
Eventually I told my husband I'd go check on them, if he could put some logs in both the fireplaces, and we shared a kiss before getting up. I walked into the living room, and my own dragon, Flicker was sleeping curled up near the fireplace. He opened one of his eyes like usual, and just grumbled a bit. I knew exactly why.
Surprise surprise, I walked into the boys' bedroom, to find them and their counterparts there, all with wide, guilty eyes. We went through the usual excuses like ''It's already morning, they didn't sleep here,'' and ''They were lonely outside.'' Honestly I wasn't really mad. We don't mind dragons in the house, Alcae and Stig are just a bit young still, and they have a tendency to chew on things that shouldn't be chewed on.
Made sure the kids, Soren and Oisin got themselves dressed, and it was cute to see them help each other with their hair. Daeron and I also got ready, all while Flicker (my dragon) was still sleeping (he's not a winter person- or well, dragon, which is unfortunate because it's almost always winter). By the time we were ready it was starting to get a little lighter outside, and we had made a plan for the day.
Rather than our usual breakfast, we proposed going out for an early flight, and visit one of the nearby isles. The twins absolutely love flying, and they soak up every bit of practical teachings that we show them. Theory? Not so much, but that's also not what vikings are known for.
Daeron went off to let Bjorn known we would be gone for a little while, and I helped the boys get their dragons ready. Considering their dragons are still growing we take off their gear every time we get home. A lot of people leave it on their older dragons for a few days, because well fitted saddles are not in their way, but can be a bit time absorbing to strap on every time. I also said hello to Frostfang, Daeron's dragon, who usually sleeps outside, as he's quite big and doesn't fancy the warmth that much.
Right before leaving we had to go back inside because the kids didn't dress warmly enough, and were stubbornly set on not being cold until a breeze hit them. When Oisin gave in, Soren folded as well, and they finally listened.
We went in the direction of Haste, watching the sunset on dragon's back. Although cold, it cleared up pretty quickly and it was a beautiful day to be out. I think all our dragons enjoyed getting some freedom, and we spent some time chasing each other, snatching the children off their dragons and practicing their balance, before going to a small bit of land for a break.
Or that's what they taught. Survival day means that we're gathering our own food. I explained to them how to find fresh water, and know you can safely drink it. And then we spent a while catching fish, making a fire and roasting them. Probably half of the catch got eaten by the dragons, but that's fair since they helped us.
They wanted to know some more tricks regarding balance. Their dragon riding is really good, but they're still learning how to keep their balance without being seated or using their hands. We spent some more time practicing, bothering Flicker by walking all over him, considering Alcae and Stig stopped sitting still after 10 minutes.
It was a lot of fun, definitely peaceful. And, I think if anyone is interested I'll have to make a part two because I just realised how ridiculously long this has gotten. If you came this far, thank you for reading, my apologies for yapping!💚

What Maybe Should've Been for HTTYD
So, I do have to admit for this ramble I'm about to go on: I haven't seen HTTYD 3, I didn't want to hearing how it went with dragons and humans splitting up, I didn't like that choice and felt it went against the themes of the first two films, where the two are stronger together over being in conflict and living separately.
Especially with the ending of the 2nd film with Toothless awakening more power because of his bond with Hiccup.
Tumblr media
So hearing where HTTYD 3 goes is a big head scratcher for me. I don't know how a majority feel about it, so hopefully I don't step on too many toes with this post, but there's info I recently learned and I just had to talk about the missed opportunity for this trilogy.
Originally, Valka was actually going to be the antagonist of HTTYD 2.

And this, I think, should've been kept. Especially knowing that the villain in HTTYD 3 is meant to be a take of "what if Hiccup had killed Toothless".
If this was kept, for the 2nd and 3rd film, Hiccup then would've been facing two sides of extremes that he could've been, two sides of what he could've become: the wily dragon defender or the cunning dragon slayer.
And I could see Valka as a solid antagonist, she would've shown expertly in this premise. She would see the dragons living with Vikings, be thrown off by it, can't forget the blood on their hands. And so she wants to take dragons away for safety. She doesn't trust the Vikings.
But she also can't help but want to reconnect with her son, to get him to join her, help her keep dragons safe.
Tumblr media
And as an antagonist, she'd have an easier time being redeemed, to have her views changed. Not only with Hiccup building a bridge for her to reconnect with the home she left behind, but the dragons themselves could've shown a want to be with people, that they are doing better.
And she could've been used as a means to build up the villain of the 3rd film, they could've been a threat that added to her extreme fears, and that 3rd film could've been the invasion of the dragon slayers, led by a dark mirror of Hiccup, a weak boy who slayed a Night Fury and was elevated by that experience.
As I have no attachment to Grimmel, and from what I've seen, he seems to function very similarly to Drago (specifically using dragons to attack), I'd probably vote just having the 3rd villain be Drago. Plus, in terms of his design, I think he has more going for him as a dark mirror of Hiccup, being disabled by a dragon as well in his youth, and you could go with the possibility that the dark cloak he wears is the skin of the Night Fury he killed.
Tumblr media
And personally, while I did enjoy HTTYD 2, I did feel like it was... off a little. Like there were two sorts of stories that were crammed together and weren't clicking well. Drago, for how much he was built up, was kinda lacking.
Tthis is what I think the HTTYD trilogy should've gone, Valka should've stayed as the antagonist of the 2nd film, and Drago the villain of the 3rd, with Hiccup facing two extremes he could've become.
For the story of domestication = bad and we need to let dragons go, if it had to exist, I feel that would've made more sense in a future film with a future generation, especially as domestication happens over time through generations. To apply that to Hiccup and Toothless in the 3rd film when the first two stress the strength of the bond, yeah that doesn't work for me. It feels very clashing in themes.

HTTYD FIC IDEA OMG PLS READ I THINK I ATE
HEAR ME OUT.
pls lmk if this goes hard or not (poll at bottom)
So Hiccup works in a forge, right? And he lost his leg to fire, right?? (Technically to Toothless, yes, BUT let’s be real—without the fire, it wouldn’t have played out like that.) And we can all agree that Toothless didn’t exactly get to him in time. There’s no way he wasn’t at least a little burnt.
Now imagine this: The Norns (the Norse Fates) are like: “Uh, wtf?? That wasn’t supposed to happen. That was NOT in his threads.” So instead of death… he wakes up with fire powers.
And I don’t mean “ooh, warm hands.” I mean sparks and flames and glowing fingertips and accidentally setting the bed on fire just by breathing too hard kind of powers. He panics. He runs away in the middle of the night with Toothless. No one sees where he went. He’s just… gone.
Meanwhile, back on Berk, the rune bones are giving the Elders weird vibes. Like... cosmically off. They’re flipping tables and blaming curses. Astrid and Stoick are devastated. But no one looks for him. The Elders literally forbid it.
So now we’ve got a runaway Hiccup with freaky fire powers and a dragon, wandering the wilds, trying not to torch everything he touches. The fire sword? A literal soul-forged weapon gifted to him by the Fates or the gods themselves, kind of as an apology like oops, you weren't supposed to have that happen sry. It lets him channel the chaos—finally gives him some control. The dragon scale armor? Yeah. That’s made from Toothless’s sheds. Fireproof. Helps him exist without accidentally combusting.
And THEN—he stumbles across a dragon sanctuary. A hidden island. Cue Valka, queen of dragons. She doesn’t recognize him at first (because armor, age, trauma, etc), but she takes him in, fire powers and all. Treats him like a son. They bond. Eventually they realize—yep. Mother and son reunion. And she loves him as he is. FIRE POWERS AND ALL!!!! They become family.
A couple of cute chapters about their new life and their new bond. Fast forward like five years, around the time of httyd 2, Hiccup does the occasional stealth flyby of Berk just to see if they’re okay. Never lands. Never gets close. Until one day… Smoke. Screaming. Berk’s under attack. He throws on the helmet, drops from the sky, and WRECKS the pillagers with fire and fury like something divine. The villagers call him “the demon.” They’re terrified.
But Astrid sees Toothless. And she knows. She runs after him as he’s leaving, and goes: “...Hiccup?” He turns. Lifts the mask. It’s him. She runs to him. He stumbles back— “Don’t come near me. Don't touch me. I can’t—I’ll hurt you.”
And she just... stops. “Okay. Then don’t touch me. Just talk to me.” They sit. They talk. She hears everything. And she’s like, “Come home. We can figure this out. You’re not cursed.” And Hiccup’s like, “The village would never accept me. The elders would all probably have a stroke.” Then she reaches for him. They touch. And she doesn’t burn. He doesn’t even realize the weight he’s been carrying until it’s gone.
He takes her to the island. He shows her his life. She’s in awe. They spend a few beautiful days together, just existing.
Then she’s like “Okay uh—if I don’t go back soon they’re gonna think I died.” So Hiccup flies her home.
He drops her off in the village square. Faceplate down. No one knows who he is. But he’s surrounded. Spears up. Shields raised. They’re ready to kill him to protect Astrid.
Then—Stoick walks up. Sword drawn. Ready to strike. And Hiccup? He lifts the helmet. And it’s him.
And Stoick just… drops the sword. Drops to his knees. Sobs.

How To Train Your Dragon Live Action PSA
Adaptation does not equal remake. The live action is not going to be word for word, scene for scene. It has taken inspiration from the animated version and made its own thing. Think of it as fanfiction. There are going to be differences, some small, some big. It's its own movie.
And yes, you can bitch and whine all you want to about it; just don't ruin it for those of us who are actually looking forward to seeing it, whether in theaters or at home. We don't care that it's a cash grab; we just want to see dragons again.
And I'm sure this goes without saying, but don't spoil it for those who don't see it right away. Not everyone can afford to see it the day, week, month it comes out. I don't care if we technically know what is going to happen, but there will be differences that don't need to be spoiled.
I really don't want to have to add HTTYD tags to my filter list because people can't behave on this site. This series means the world to me, and seeing nothing but hate for it is very upsetting.

“Disparate” — Chapter 6

ᛊᚾᛇᚱ
Somehow the two had ended up sticking together after training. Conversation was sprawled out, and random topics fluttered from their minds easily. (Name) wouldn't have ever expected to engage in conversation with Hiccup like she was now— it had only been three days since her mind suddenly flipped a switch, and it was still shocking how she'd suddenly eased into a semi-friendship with him.
The snow they trailed through went up to her ankles, while for him— it went up to the tip of his boots, soaking the leather in an uncomfortable cold chill. With training for the day over, they were free to do whatever they pleased— and since it was the first snow day of the year... everyone knows what that meant.
"Oh my Thor! We should build a snow Viking together!" (Name) suddenly cheered, stopping in her tracks and whirring to face the boy next to her, that of whom was slightly shivering thanks to his outfit that did not shelter him at all.
Hiccup paused to look at her with a flicker of hesitation, contemplating the idea thoroughly. It wasn't that he was opposed to the idea— it's just... he was unsure about it. He'd grown up without friends, watching the others play in the snow together that he'd never actually done so himself.
He didn't actually know how to build a snow Viking, not to mention he had a little project to get back to... but, did he really want to turn down an offer from the first 'friend' he'd had in ages? Well, they seemed to be becoming friends from what he could see at the very least.
Maybe it was time for him to join the snow day activities again. He did use to watch with such longing, staring from afar as the others pranced like foals in the snow, only to be shooed away any time he tried to join up with them.
With a bated breath, he nodded— the ever so slight curve of a smile rolling onto his face, stretching dimples into the apples of his freckle splattered cheeks. "Sure— just... I need to get my bigger coat," he accepted, gesturing to his house up the hill with his hands, and (Name) visibly brightened at his acceptance.
"Then let's go!" She chirped, grabbing onto his hand and dragging him through the snow, pouncing up the hill like an excited fox would when chasing after a rabbit in the snow. Despite the short distance, the trek up the hill did tire her a little— on top of training, jumping through ankle deep snow was a task in itself.
Hiccup's hut lay at the top of the village, next to the great hall and standing proud in all its two story glory. As the heir of Berk— it was only natural he lived up high, though... the reason wasn't really anything other than those of status lived higher up on the island.
Berk had a hierarchy— a little different than those found on the far away mainlands, but still rather similar at the least.
The farmers lived down near the cliffs by the paddocks, the constant stench of dung and straw plaguing their homes. Next came the regular citizens— living somewhere in the middle of the village for convenience. It was the easiest place to set up home markets and trade with one another in the town hall. Then came the warriors, those on Berk who were suited to guard lived up near the top of the island, leaving an advantage point for them and their families when raids struck. Then, the utilities would be just before the great hall. Things like the forge, carpenters and store houses were located up next to the chiefs house— and maybe it wasn't the best place, since the high vantage point allowed the dragons to sneak up with a lesser problem.
She had released his hand back to himself once they reached his doorstep, and he walked up to his front door— pushing it open and stepping inside. Snow was shook off of his boots with each step, and the small flakes fell onto the ground in a trail after him.
(Name) stood outside, waiting on the porch and peering inside as he went in. Maybe it wasn't the best idea, but she would get bored in the short amount of time standing out here— only focusing on the most exiting her mouth. So, she glanced inside, curiously taking in the furniture layout.
It was similar to her own families house, but it seemed a few things were changed. The loft, which in her own hut belonged to her parents, seemed to be owned by Hiccup— seeing as he crawled up the steps to the hanging spot above. The lower floor was a standard room, chairs centred around a fireplace— but one of them was a tall wooden throne, obviously belonging to the chief.
Her eyes stopped surveying the frigid insides of Hiccup's home, and instead focused on the boy who she could barely see in the dark upstairs, only the head of his slightly red tinted locks peeking through.
Hiccup had clambered up to his 'room', the open area loft containing both his bed— his desk and basically all his personal items within. A wooden chest held most of his things, and it was that chest that he walked over to, to begin searching.
He had pried open the lid, looking inside the cluster of items and peering through for what he needed. The box contained many things; a few small and old daggers, many sketch books and plans of inventions, both new and old— and finally, his winter clothes.
A thicker vest— the fur reaching the same lengths as the old one, but able to be buttoned up and the brown tousles of hair thicker than the other. Of course gloves were needed, if he didn't want his fingers to go a pale blue and fall of that is— and a knitted scarf given to him by one of the elder women many years ago.
He swapped his current vest for the newer and warmer one, feeling the warmth leave him as the already mellowed cloth was replaced by the newer vest— still yet to be warmed. The gloves slipped onto his hands one by one, muffling his palms in a gentle caress that kept his stiff hands from freezing off like his nose might.
Then finally, he pulled out the tangle of cotton from the chest, the red scarf slightly itchy from being worn over time, but he'd take an itch over hypothermia anytime. He tied it around his neck, letting the excess drape over his form before standing back up and letting the chest fall shut.
Instinctively, his gloved hand reached up and wiped at his cheeks, still dirtied from when they'd been pressed against the ground— and he managed to get the top layer of crush removed from his flesh, only leaving subtle stains of grey dusting his cheeks.
He turned, sauntering back down the steps and seeing (Name) still standing in the open doorway— awaiting his return. Her eyes turned to him once she'd heard the thuds of his steps, taking in his new appearance, and a stifled laugh got caught in her throat at the sight of him.
Honestly— he looked kind of funny, wrapped in the scarf produced from nalebinding. The newer and warmer winter wear looked heavy on him, but it seemed to have no effect on his pace as he stepped back outside into the freezing cold, shutting his huts door behind him.
"Done?" She asked, and in reply she received a confirming nod, the ever so smallest of smiles peeking out from beneath his scarf. "Then let's go—!" She squealed, grabbing his hand again and dragging him back down the slope, both of them now dressed in their winter wear.
She had pulled him along, his feet stumbling at first before they joined pace with hers and came to run in sync, both of them tumbling through the village hand it hand. To her, she just seemed excited to build a snow Viking with the boy— but Hiccup was a flustered mess inside.
It was no surprise to those around that Hiccup hadn't had friends for years, but a girl—? That was a whole different story. He didn't want to make it weird by getting all awkward, but he had to admit he was nervous around her, and maybe a little confused at his own feelings.
Just three days ago, she'd embarrassed him in front of the village— and technically, others had done that too... but what made her different was that she apologised. She actually apologised to him, and something about how she did so set something off in him.
He never expected an apology, let alone for that person who'd apologised to keep talking to him. Him. Hiccup the Useless had gotten a friend. It made him happy, an indescribable joy fluttering inside his heart at the prospect that after five years, he'd gotten a friend.
They ran past the upper layers of houses, trudging through the snow filled paths of the empty village together and slowly growing lower down and closer to the cliffs, the sound of distant waves bashing against the rocks below growing louder the closer they got.
Not only did sheep bleat, but laughs of a certain group grew louder, accompanied by short panicked screams.
The sheep pens were the common place for the kids to play and muck-around during winter, seeing as they harboured the most area, and the sheep and yaks stayed inside the barn during the cold months, leaving the paddocks a free for all zone that was taken up by eager kids.
Inside the wooden barricades walls of snow were built sloppily, crumbling when hardened and compressed balls of glittery snow bashed into it after being thrown. Snotlout hid behind one of these said walls, grabbing snow up within his hands and forming it into a lop-sided ball within his hands.
Next to him sat Fishlegs, the boy nervously peeking over the top of the wall— only to duck back down when a snowball flew right where his head had been, narrowly missing the helmet of the chattering boy.
On the opposite side of the two, Astrid was hidden behind her own wall— a pile of snowballs built and at the ready as she continued to make more, stocking up her supply and making sure that she'd never run out of ammo to throw in the direction of the enemies (Snotlout and Fishlegs).
In the middle, another wall was built, and it wasn't exactly easy to see who was on the other side, but from the identical horns sticking out, it was easy to assumed the twins hid behind it, plotting whatever menacing Loki trick they'd managed to come up with.
A snowball fight. A common tradition amongst the youngsters, and also a messy one. Sometimes the games would grow far too competitive, and someone would come home with a bruised face or ever a broken bone. No idea how that happens.
Anywho, (Name) and Hiccup weren't here to watch the others game, they were here to build a snow Viking.
She let go of his hand, approaching the fence and easily pulling herself over it, landing swiftly in the crunched snow on the other side. Hiccup approached the fence after, the wooden barricade nearly being as tall as the short boy— and he had to use a lot more force to lift himself over the barricade, rolling over and falling down into the snow, an unstable but working landing.
(Name) laughed as he pulled himself out of the snow, some flakes still caught in his hair and scarf. He shook his head roughly, tousling his hair but effectively removing most of the stray snow specks from his hair, the rest melting into him and disappearing into nothing more than water.
"That was graceful," she snorted, a smile stretching her lips wide from ear to ear forcefully, and to drown out the subtle embarrassment, Hiccup returned with his own sarcastic comment. "Thanks, I've been practicing," he shrugged, dusting off the front of his vest that also happened to pick up snow when he fell.
The two stifled their laughs and instead moved to a part of the sheep paddock away from the war between the others, stopping in their own peaceful undisturbed spot that was ready to be filled with a snow Viking.
"So uh... how do we build one?" He stood awkwardly, staring down at the ground with confusion— and (Name) took the liberty of explaining how to do so to him. "Just roll the snow into giant balls, and I'll explain from there," she began, already crouching down to the ground and beginning to roll snow beneath her palms.
He watched her, her form crouched low to the ground and gathering snow— observing how her hands scooped up some of the fluffy white flakes before trying to replicated her movements. He crouched, beginning to gather snow in his hands, the chill nipping at his fingers and stinging a little, but he kept gathering snow nonetheless.
They both looked like those yakdung beetles, slowly growing their balls of snow and rolling them larger and larger. (Name) began to roll her large snow ball easily, turning to have to push it with both hands as it grew too larger for only one hand.
Hiccup was following down the same path, rolling his own snowball through a winding trail and building it up until it reached his hips, the hefty ball being a struggle to roll now. He pushed it, and kept doing so until he reached back to (Name), stopping his ball right down on the floor.
"Is this big enough?" He patted the snowball, the firm and condensed ball reaching just above his hips, thanks to his extra rolling. (Name) stopped, staring at the large snowball with wide eyes, slowly nodding as she took in the fact he had managed to roll a snowball bigger than hers.
"That's perfect! So, now we just... stack— this one," she grunted as she began to pick up her snowball, lifting it up with a struggle before planting it firmly on the top of Hiccup's, forming the body of their snow Viking.
"Now, we need an even smaller one for the head," she finished, dusting off her hands that had become tipped with red as the blood began to congregate in the tips.
Over to the side, the group who'd been waging a faux war on one another noticed the duo happily rolling snow, turning to face the scene with curiosity as a temporary truce was formed momentarily.
"...Is that—? (Name) and Hiccup?" Snotlout gaped, blinking rapidly as if the scene before him would chance when he did so. The twins had moved out from their midway post, and had come to peer at the two building their snow Viking as well, curiosity swelling in the group.
"Ew. Why's she hanging out with him?" Ruffnut gagged.
"I can smell him from here," she continued, pinching her nose together as if to block out the 'smell' that was supposedly coming from Hiccup as she claimed.
"That's just me. I forgot to bathe again," Tuffnut shrugged nonchalantly, receiving an elbow from the girl, her bone slamming hard into the feeble side of his ribcage.
"You're disgusting! It's been five weeks," she sneered, shuffling away from her brother who merely pulled himself back off of the floor, shaking the snow off of him that had stuck to his clothing.
"Shut up you two!" Snotlout hissed, snapping at the twins and while they both sent him glares in response, they shut up anyway, letting Snotlout turn back around to watch (Name) and Hiccup hanging out together.
For one, he was shocked, very shocked. How could she choose to hang out with Hiccup over them!? That runt—. The scrawny little Hiccup the Useless. He just couldn't wrap his mind around it.
They were merely a few paces away, building a snow Viking together, on the first snow of the year! Did she forget how special this was! You're always meant to play with your real friends on the first snow of the year! Albeit... it wasn't a real tradition, something the small group had come up with— but it didn't matter! She was breaking friend code. And maybe a little bit of his heart too.
Snotlout kept his glare steeled on Hiccup, the boy wrapped in warm furs and smiling happily as they began to roll up a new ball of snow. So— disgusting. Hiccup didn't deserve to smile like that. Not in his books at least. He should've been sent off to sea when he was born. That's what Snotlout thought at least.
Though, it didn't matter how happy they were, they still won't be able to see what hit them.
"Ow!" Hiccup yelped, a rather heavy ball of snow slamming into the side of his face and dissolving on impact, whipping his head to the side.
He froze for a moment, registering the blow before turning his head to the distant snickers, spotting the group of other teens hiding behind the wall and giggling. Well— more precisely, Snotlout and the twins were giggling, Fishlegs was giving him a look of pity while Astrid was nowhere to be seen.
"Oops! Sorry Useless, my hand slipped!" Snotlout called out, and his obvious mockery pulled a frown out of Hiccup, the scowl tugging at his lips and brows, pulling them downwards.
"..."
"Don't worry! I'd expect it too!" He spat back, standing up to his full— but still small— height. A chorus of 'oohs' came from the twins, the giggles and snickering growing louder.
The two didn't seem to care who was getting hurt or who was throwing the punches, just as long as someone was getting hit in the process. "You might need some ice for that burn Snotlout," Tuffnut giggled, juggling a snowball within his hand as to add to the point he was making.
Snotlout snatched the ball from the other boys hand, resulting in a protest from the twin— but he couldn't even do much as Snotlout throttled the snowball in Hiccup's direction, once again hitting him bullseye in the face.
"Snotlout— what the hell!?" (Name) looked between Hiccup and the boy who was for some reason both agitated and aggressive, already preparing another snowball to be launched from his grip.
Hiccup was shaking more snow from his hair and outfit, the side of his face turning a subtle red thanks to the sting of ice burning his skin, not to mention the fact he'd just been hit twice in the side of the face with a snowball.
"What? Like I said! My hand slipped," he shrugged, not even sparing a glance to the girl protesting his actions, instead reeling his hand back to throw his newly formed snowball. As he readjusted his grip, he targeted his aim onto Hiccup again— and he was so focused he didn't even see the snowball heading his way.
It slammed it his face, throwing him off for a moment, and he turned in the direction the attack came from.
(Name).
She'd managed to quickly form a sloppy snowball and throw it at his head, just in time to stop his third shot. Already, she was gathering another shot, scooping snow within her hands and readying another ball.
"Stop protecting that loser!" Snotlout growled, dropping the snowball in his fit of rage.
"I'm not, my hand slipped," she shrugged, a smirk tugging onto her face as she pulled her hand back again, before swinging it forward and releasing her grasp on the new ball, successfully letting it fly towards Snotlout's face, making the boy duck.
"Snowball fight!" Tuffnut yelled, and it wasn't long before the silly scuffle between three teens turned into an all out battle ground between every one of them. Hiccup and (Name) had teamed up with one another, managing to form an alliance with Astrid thanks to her being (Name's) best friend— and the three had begun to plan their attack on the others.
"So... (Name), you distract them at the front here— while I'll sneak around the sides and ambush them... and Hiccup, you keep making more ammo... and I guess throw some if you want," Astrid grumbled the last part, but despite her reservations about the boy from earlier; and the awkward air between them, she had put aside her thoughts to win this game.
They weren't going to be beat by the others, now way in hel would she allow that. She'd rather get married off before she let Snotlout beat her in anything other than the Thawfest games.
(Name) nodded to the plan, easily accepting the planned out organisation of them all— while Hiccup seemed a tad disappointed, his shoulders dropping as he was appointed to stay back.
He could do more than stay back, surely. He'd find some way to make himself more useful than an ammo loader... he just had to get a good grasp on his surroundings.
"Alright, let's go," Astrid nodded with them in sync, and while Hiccup and (Name) began to get to work on their own plans, Astrid had begun sneaking around the side of the wall, using the twins middle grounds as her own hiding post to keep herself hidden.
The ground was made of tiny flakes, melting when they came into contact with the others hands— and Hiccup made sure to pack the balls heavy with ice, both keeping them from melting, and making sure the impact on Snotlout's face would be that much harder.
Taunts were thrown from either side, and the impact of snowballs from the opposing side kept slamming into their protective wall, thudding heavily and slowly but surely crumbling the snow barricade.
While Hiccup and (Name) were on the same team right now, they weren't exactly communicating with one another. They were both building their own ammo supply and planning their own ways to make the other side forfeit, making them the winners.
(Name) was focused on the job Astrid had given her, making sure to have plenty of Snowballs built so that she'd never run out once she got to rapidly throttling them through the air. Meanwhile, Hiccup was plotting down a plan in his head, working out various combinations of ways to get the other team without having to use his strength.
If he decided to try and out throw them, he'd definitely loose... so he'd have to make the cookie crumble some other way. Open attacks were a no go, he'd be spotted and sent right to the ground the moment he showed his face— so... he had to devise another way to unleash his attack.
If Astrid was working on creeping closer, and (Name) was currently working on distraction... he could build off of that. He too could use a sneak attack. After all, who would suspect two ambushes one after another?
First, he'd use most of his ammo... leaving only a few balls left— and making sure they thought he was refuelling. The snowballs were blindly thrown, seeing as he didn't want to risk becoming the main target and giving away his position.
He kept hiding, hurling snowball after snowball as well as he could without seeing, and he kept going even as he heard snickers of his terrible aim from the other side. Most didn't hit their mark, and he didn't really mind as he dwindled down to a low stock of only four snowballs, having had enough for his plan to roll into motion.
Next, he crept around (Name), using his small size to his advantage and peering around the corner. Snotlout and the others weren't visible, but he could see Astrid with snowballs in her arm, ready to jump around the corner— and he knew he had to be quick.
He scurried behind the middle break, hearing the twins bickering on the other side of the thick snow and making sure to keep quiet, keeping himself pressed tightly down.
Maybe there was one upside to being the runt... he could hide in places that others couldn't.
He waited, stilling for a few seconds before he heard a loud war cry, Astrid's voice bellowing as girlish shrieks were released from both Snotlout and Fishlegs' throat, the two being ambushed by Astrid.
He dashed, quickly using this small amount of window provided to him to stumbled around to the other side, a snowball already in hand and raised high above.
Astrid caught sight of him, her eyes widening in shock, and she only had time to register his presence before he threw the snowball, the close range compact ball of cold ice shrapnels slamming right into the side of the Snotlout's face, exploding and shattering into tiny specks upon impact.
Snotlout was still reeling from the aftermath of both Hiccup's and Astrid's attack, but once he noticed that not only had Astrid ambushed him— but Hiccup too.. he ever so slowly turned his head, nearly creaking his bones as he face Hiccup.
The small boy froze, another ball at the ready— and on instinct he launched it, landing right smash in the middle of Snotlout's face.
Oh Þór... he was probably dead.
"You're going to regret that 'Useless'," Snotlout hissed, slowly standing from where he'd been sat behind his own fortification. His anger simmered off of him in waves, and despite the stocky teen nearly being Hiccup's height— he certainly wasn't as skinny.
"Am I?" Hiccup smiled innocently, showing off his crooked teeth in a gesture to both find the situation somewhat humorous and tease the boy, which only resulted in Snotlout lunging for him like a rabid animal.
Hiccup cried in surprise, the shrill sound trilling in his throat as he leapt out of the way just in time, narrowly missing the ferocious hands that reached out for his, desperate to grab him by the stick like neck of his and strangle him until no more air remained in his lungs.
Snotlout scrambled back up, already running back for Hiccup, and so a chase began.
Maybe Hiccup wasn't strong, he wasn't so good at lifting things or throwing punches— but damn could his little legs run. The scrawny sticks that usually stumbled over his own steps, they carried him alone with the adrenaline.
He wasn't sure how he was avoiding Snotlout as the boy chased after him in a ferocious fury of embarrassment, desperate for revenge, but Hiccup wasn't stopping to find out. With adrenaline thudding through his muscles, he jumped the sheep paddocks fence— nearly slipping on the icy floor before regaining his footing once more.
Snotlout struggled a little behind him as well, and the two disappeared into the winding town of the village, leaving the snowball fight that had been interrupted by both of them. Mainly Snotlout.
"You think he'll catch him?" Ruffnut stared from her shared shelter with Tuffnut, staring at the spot afar where the two had been running around like idiots, and shrugs came from all around.
"Nah, Hiccup never gets caught, even in Hiccup hunting. He's so fast for someone so small..." Tuffnut muttered the last part to himself, shaking his head while swiftly picking up a snowball from the hundreds he and his sister had been crafting within their tower.
The ball was shoved into Ruffnut's face, and the girl whipped around to glare at the boy, a scowl on her face before she tackled him into the ground, shoving him into the floor and destroying the left side of their wall in the process as he wasn't pushed into the cold floor, eventually receiving a thorough beating from the girl.
❝Uh oh...❞
Night had fallen in a gentle caress over the land, gracing the soft snow filled 'wonderland' with the quiet of chirping crickets and the soft crackle of fire the class had come to sit around. It was warm, keeping away the biting winter breeze and forming a protective mellow shield around the chittering group, mist still exiting their mouths with every puff of air.
The chase from earlier today had ended with Hiccup somehow managing to loose Snotlout, and from then on— the boy had disappeared the rest of the afternoon, slinking away to a place nobody knew of, nor could find.
Though, despite his previous absence, now he sat around the fire with the rest of the others, roasting chicken over the open flame and pretending to ignore the dark scowl being sent his way by a certain Viking who still held a grudge over a few hits from earlier.
Gobber was boasting a story, using his hand(s) to act out as he continued to speak, recounting the events as if they were acts committed by Óðinn himself. The chicken on the other end of his stick seemed to be taking a trip through the air as the smith waved it around, and surprisingly— it somehow made his story all the more intriguing.
"T'en wit' one mighty twist— it took me hand and swallowed it whole! I could see the look on its face; I was delicious! That devil must've passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of those beasts took me leg!" His story was wild, and frankly— he spoke rather easily about the loss of him limbs, seeing them as trophies of his survival rather than organs to mourn the loss of.
Despite the engaging story, it brought on rather disturbing thoughts. Dragons were large beasts, vicious and unforgiving in the world they inhabited. They'd torn many limbs from the bodies of fellow comrades in arms, and most didn't make it out alive.
Gobber was lucky— that much was obvious. Maybe he was tough... that was an option too. But, to survive not only the huge amount of blood loss, but the fevers that were said to come after amputation? It was a feat, and maybe that's why he spoke so highly of the loss. It was a win, it was a win over those things.
They'd tried to knock him down, remove him from the battle field, but he'd gotten right back up, equip with more knowledge and an even heavier drive pushing him than before.
"Isn't it kind of weird to think that your hand was inside of a dragon? Like— if your mind had still been in control of it, you could have crushed the dragons heart from the inside!" Fishlegs bestowed the vivid imagery formed in his mind upon the others, blessing them with the description and now plaguing them with images of that idea.
That was just weird.
Not to mention impossible.
What kind of supernatural ideas is Fishlegs thinking of? The prospect of an amputated hand being alive within a stomach wasn't pretty, and nobody bit the twins wanted to delve deeper into that image, and thank fully— Snotlout stepped in, for once he was actually helpful.
"I swear to Þór! I'm so angry right now. I'll take revenge for your beautiful hand and your... beautiful foot!" He hesitated for a moment, but finished his sentence with as mighty of a determination as he had started, jutting his leg of chicken towards the fire before taking an angry bite out of it when he paused.
"I'll cut off the legs of every dragon I fight— with my face!" He declared, raising his hand holding the severed roast chicken in hand as if to make some sort of toast, hoping for the others around to join in; but he only got silence and disturbed blinks owlishly staring at his stood form.
Snotlout glanced around, noticing the crickets getting louder, even from where the sat high in the watchtower and took his seat again, a faint blush of embarrassment flooding over the apples of his cheeks as he did so.
"Ah ah! Not the legs. It's t'e wings n' tails yer want. If it can't fly, it can't get away," Gobber interrupted the boy, prying a piece of white meat from his own chicken leg and tossing it into his mouth, chewing the deliciously toasted meat within his mouth.
"A downed dragon, is a dead dragon," he finished, and the air seemed to grow thick, for (Name) and Hiccup at least. Hiccup knew why he grew tense at those words, flashes of only a singular onyx fin repeating in his mind, while (Name) remained curious over her empathy towards the idea, trying to brush it away as she drew her eyes to her chicken roasting over the fire.
"Righty'o! I'm off to bed. Yer lot should be too. We've got more trainin' tomorrow. In the afternoon, we move onto the big boys! Slowly but surely workin' our way up to the Monstrous Nightmare... but— who will win the honour of killing it?" Gobber's ominous voice sent a chitter of excitement wavering through the teens, giddy and hopeful to gain such an honour.
The old smith hobbled away after his short speech, leaving down the spiral steps of the tower— and had it not been for her observation skills, (Name) wouldn't have noticed how Hiccup slipped away just after him as well.
The group began to discuss who would win the honour, everyone obviously voting for themselves— leaning closer together as they bickered over who would bring their blade down on the dragons neck, ending its futile life. Though, (Name) had stood from her seat, brows creased and jogging over to the steps, watching Hiccup disappear at the bottom.
Just what was he up too?
No matter how much she was becoming his friend, that didn't rid her of suspicion.
He'd been investigating the Night Fury an awful lot since that fateful night, questions slipping from his lips, tugging at Gobber and the books he found for answers, and she couldn't help but be curious as to why.
Sure, he'd been obsessed with the Night Fury before, but that was about shooting it down. He'd claimed he took down the dragon, only for it to return next raid— never had he asked about its habits, behavioural patterns or if anyone had seen one.
Had he lied that day? Told her it had gotten away, when truly it hadn't? Had it attacked him? Was that why he was so reluctant to talk about it? Because it was another failure?
So many questions bombarded her mind, and she couldn't seemed to find an answer to any of them, chicken skewer still in hand as she trotted down the stairs, following after the vague figure of the boy as he disappeared into the night.
He didn't trek far, only walking his way through the village towards the direction of the Meade hall— and she assumed he may be going to be like Gobber had suggested, but that was ruled out when he worked his way into the forge.
The forge? What could he possibly be using the forge for this late at night?
There were no witnesses, nobody around to tell the boy to get inside— and the raids had finally ended for the season; winter being an era of safety for a few months, allowing them to replenish what was lost over the years past.
He was just in the forge alone, shuffling in and out of some back room she'd never really seen before, materials in hand and tools in his grasp. He moved with a fluent drive that made him out to be a skilled craftsman, but he was only an apprentice still.
He blew the bellows, brushing up the fire in the forge and relighting the dimming blaze, heating the coals slowly back up to their original temperature, smoke beginning to pile out of the chimney as the flames began to flutter alive with the oxygen feeding into it.
He kept going, clanging metal against metal and working on some sort of project that she could see from her view behind a hut— and as much as she'd like to spy on him all night, for reasons that will not be stated, she had to retreat back to her home.
Though, even as she returned to the comforting warmth of her hut, she didn't let up on the memories of him working away after hours in the forge. Wasting away inside the blacksmith as he hammered iron and cooled glowing metal.
She'd figure out what he was up to... after she became friends with him though— she still wanted to be friends with him.
...
Why were emotions so confusing!?

Been trying to put my thoughts all in order ever since I watched the live action Httyd yesterday. Had a night to sleep on it.
Everything of what I liked and didn't like is under the "keep reading" for the sake of spoilers and length.
Things I liked:
Mason Thames as Hiccup.
Nico Parks as Astrid.
Actually, I like how all the Dragon Riders were portrayed. Fishlegs in particular!
Toothless didn't end up bothering me as much as I thought he would.
I actually really ended up liking the design of the other dragons, of Hookfang in particular.
An even bigger Red Death!
Also the Red Death appeared red to me!
Astrid taking on the Red Death's teeth just to give Stormfly a chance to escape.
Phlegma, glad she had a more prominent role in this one. I didn't even know who she was in the animated movie.
The subplot of Snotlout and Spitelout that was ripped straight from the shows.
Nick Frost. (I also greatly enjoyed him in the Cornetto Trilogy)
The new backstory of Berk; not just a Viking tribe who came and made this island their home, but instead warriors from several different tribes who came together to fight for a single cause. So many different cultures mingling together, it makes me wonder how much of their cultures has stayed throughout the generations and which have evolved and intermingled.
Giving Astrid a new kind of purpose was interesting.
The implication that Stoick was keeping his eye on Astrid, which made her basically turning her back on him to stick to Hiccup's side even more meaningful. It's been confirmed that she, who came from nothing, stands to lose everything if she stuck by Hiccup and yet she still did.
That moment between Stoick and Astrid when they thought they had lost Hiccup. Nico Parks was so good at portraying Astrid who wanted to break down crying as well, but kept it together for her chief and the now grieving father.
I had to come around to the fact that it's basically a shot-for-shot remake, but the extra added scenes like the one during the first voyage to the nest were enjoyable.
It's a Live Action and so it's more grounded in reality, but it also didn't lose the typical Httyd thing of people getting thrown around and yet basically being fine.
I love Astrid as a lone wolf in the first animated movie, but I also love her when she's friends and hyping the other would-be Dragon Riders up.
I love that Hiccup and Astrid interact more prior to the Romantic Flight scene. It's like we got that delete scene from 2010 animated movie returned to us, even if she was a little bit mean, lol.
Hiccup wasn't used as a reason/threat to get the majority of Berk to go on that first voyage in the movie.
Fishlegs' cards already appearing in this movie and probably due to him making them after reading the Book of Dragons hundreds of times.
LOOOOOOOVED whenever Stormfly was on screen. I could just watch an hour of her flicking her spines at people. (Likewise, I could just watch Astrid cartwheel all over the place.)
The appearances of the Rumblehorns and the Skrills.
Forbidden Friendship.
It's no longer just an analogy, the Red Death is a queen dragon.
The Red Death's control over dragons has been confirmed as well. (Like how Stormfly had a hard time ignoring her.)
They kept Hiccup losing his leg! (despite the appearance of amputees played by actors who aren't amputees in real life, I still kind of worried, but they kept it!)
The outfits were cool!
The environment looked and felt more real and "accurate" to how Vikings lived. (no wooden bed with just one thin little blanket, lol)
Things I didn't like as much:
Surprisingly enough? Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick. I was very much in the camp of liking his return to the Httyd series in the live action, but for some reason I did not like Stoick as much in the LA as I ended up doing the first time I watch the first Httyd movie.
The pacing was off in places. Some scenes that should've taken their time went by too fast and some that were drawn out could've picked up the pace a little.
Test Drive in particular felt very long and the emptiness when they were falling, which should've felt jarring and suspenseful, felt awkward instead. I feel like that pause in the sountrack could've done with some muffled noises, maybe a rapid joint heartbeat. It's a cliche, but it's a good one!
Test Drive was also very hard to watch because of the near constant shaky cam. I felt myself becoming just slightly dizzy. ;-;
No idea how I feel about Astrid being the leader of the Dragon Riders instead of Hiccup. I mean, it is a concept very much started in the tv-shows and only implied in the movies. But still, it's "Hiccup and the Dragon Riders," no? ;-; It always felt so special to me because Hiccup was this outcast and now he has these ride or dies with him!
Toothless could have emoted more. (I really missed his threatening gazes and his realization when Hiccup was doing something to his tail.)
Toothless was clumsier? I legitimately wondered if there was something wrong with his wings as well, but that may just purely be a me problem.
The Book of Dragons was just kind of glossed over? The Thunderdrum and the Timberjack were mentioned, but all the others like the Whispering Death, the Skrill, the Changewing, the Boneknapper or what all of these dragons could do? Not mentioned.
I don't believe Toothless was trying to draw Hiccup this time. I certainly didn't see a face in it.
Toothless appears less powerful. (Or perhaps, that's just what it looks like because they tried to make the live action more realistic.)

What was it about THW that made Toothless a flop for you?
I've tossed all sorts of stuff around, so I feel like I'd really be repeating those posts, so I'll just sum it up for simplisity~
-Toothless is a dog in this movie. A horny dog. Not charming compared to the previous two movies.
-Toothless cares about nothing but the Light Fury. There's being in love, and there's being absent from the flock you're supposed to be guarding to go off on some date while your best friend is being left behind to fight the villain.
-Is Toothless an intelligent animal that understands humor, a hostage situation, high speed adaptation to human society, morality, and understanding humans almost on a human level or is he an instinct-driven animal and nothing more? We may never know because HTTYD preached the first half while THW was stuck on the latter unless plot device.
-Toothless gets this redundant super-power to go invisible for...reasons? Like, the Light Fury can't have anything original to her, Toothless MUST have it too because what originally made him unique is now absent and thus something has to be going for him, I guess.
-The dragons don't leave because they're safer in THW. Let's face it, the dragons leave because Toothless wants to be with the Light Fury and rule THW and since he's Berks' alpha, the Berkian dragons really have no say in it. The separation felt more like it was for Toothless, not all dragons.
-Toothless hardly even glances at Hiccup in this movie. His interactions with literally anything else not girlfriend material is actually at 0. Cloudjumper that Toothless just thought was the coolest new friend in HTTYD 2? Who's that? Who cares, new girlfriend.
Toothless getting a girlfriend isn't the issue. The issue is that apparently you can only have a best friend OR a girlfriend. Can't have both. I mean, just look at Hiccup. As soon as Astrid came onto the scene with that kiss after the romantic flight, Hiccup forgot about the rest of the gang for the rest of the movie and Toothless was forced to face Stoick alone until the very end where Hiccup suddenly learned how to be a warrior just a powerful as Astrid and saved the day. The pair then went their ways since Hiccup belongs on Berk where all humans true home is and Toothless can go somewhere else because one day the world will be ready for humans if you sit around and hope instead of educating others and fighting for it.
Yeah, lol, so basically for that last point, it was all about the fact that everything HTTYD stood for with Toothless being a major focal point is tossed to the side. I'm not against separation because it's for the best for all parties involved, but THW is NOT the movie that did that good and instead just made Toothless super unlikable and OOC to make it work. Want a good movie for that? (possible spoiler??) then watch The Wild Robot. Much better.

since httyd is trending again i’ve seen a lot of discourse about the hidden world so here’s my opinion.
as much as I PERSONALLY don’t like that hiccup and toothless get separated at the end (because it makes me cry like a baby), i think it wraps the story up nicely. my thing is i wish it wasn’t for a girl. hiccup and astrid have a relationship for the entirety of the last two movies, and hiccup never ever chose between them, he couldn’t it was his girlfriend and his best friend. and i don’t like how the writers dismiss toothless as some girl crazy teenager, cause he’s literally not.
hiccup and toothless were each others home for 6+ YEARS. i personally don’t believe toothless would have thrown that away for a girl and i wish the writers didn’t portray him like that.
HOWEVER, i do think toothless leaving at the end (in whatever way that would have happened) was necessary. hiccup giving him back his independence WAS necessary. AND the monologue hiccup gives at the end “there were dragons when i was a boy…” almost brings it to life. like it’s “canon compliant” with real life, if you will. it shows that there actaully COULD be dragons hidden somewhere, and that the events of all three movies are true, and we just don’t see them cause they’re waiting until we can all get along (which, let’s face it, is not now).
if you believe in that type of stuff, which i do, then dragons could truly be real somewhere and I like that idea better. that instead of it just being a movie franchise and complete fiction, it gives it that little bit of what if? what if they are real, and we just can’t see them get?
anyways i am actually the biggest httyd stan EVER and i approve the new LA so if anyone says its bad then they’re wrong.

So I learnt that with being Otherhearted comes this feeling, a place. Called your Hearthome-
It seems like it's just like...your place. Your space, environment, location, universe, world, wherever that is, that makes you feel the safest, the most welcome the most euphoric the most true to yourself. A place where you can just feel free and live how you want to live surrounded by the things that make you feel the absolute most happiest. A bit like the Species Euphoria, but with a place.
I think I have multiples of these, and then one true sort of main one. I dunno if there is a word within Hearthome that sort of separates those. But there are so many movie universes I would absolutely kill to be a part of, like the HTTYD universe, or things like Narnia, or this place at home irl, where we go on holiday a lot and is my favourite place to go on holiday.
But the place I truly feel the most at home and free spirited and euphoric is the beach. Any beach, really, but there is one specific one I think of. (I won't say the name because I'm not doxing myself xD) and I've known that for a few a couple years now. It took me soooooo long to realise, it was a real journey. But when I went there on holiday and then came back I found myself missing the atmosphere, the sounds, smells, sights, everything, soooooooo much!
So I'd say my Hearthome is the beach.

It's been a minute since I've posted non-dsmp art and I've done a lot of stuff lately that I'm proud of so- art be upon ye!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All three of these were made as adoptables - they have homes elsewhere now ^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is stuff for a work-in-progess universe that's basically the wild west with dragons from the httyd franchise - it's a BIG passion project that I hope to do things with in the future :) (Characters featured are my own, we have the unnamed Hushboggle/Rangler duo, Marrith and their speed stingers, and finally my boy Rem and his slitherwing Suture)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A wip reference sheet for my httyd fan-species, The Abyssal-Flashmaw, a deep dwelling dragon species who are often incredibly curious beasts when they leave the depths & some sketches of Mauler and Stalker, two newer OCs whose designs I bought from ac1dian on Instagram
Tumblr media
And a little character concept sketch for a new OC that's in the works, a goroun (<- aka just my take on a fantasy race that is JUST piglins imma be real) gladiator guy based on a red river hog!

Hey Mason! Thank you sm for replying to my ask again sweetest! 🫶🏻 I would personally love just ANY storytime whether that be sweet or wholesome or action or anything else, from your medieval or anyother dr lol as long as it's from you, because all your stories are SO fun to read haha 😆 I'm also up for whatever mundane things you wanna share 🥰 i would also love it if you could describe about things we don't find it here in this reality, for example ur experience with riding dragons or having a merman tail, the things we don't consider "possible" here. also, could you please describe more about the different style reality thing? It sounds so cool but I'm so confused lol, i would love to know more!
I'm looking forward to when u shift to a 2D reality 🤭
sending you sm love <33
Hello again Aiiyna!
I'll definitely keep in mind that majority of you people here don't have a preference for the kind of storytimes I post! Remember that you can also always ask me to describe something specific, I have no issue telling you guys about things I experienced, and if something's private I'll let you know!
I might make a ''A day in my life in [dr name] post sometime soon!💚
Riding dragons is one of the best feelings out there, although I might be a bit biased. It's incredibly freeing, and both extremely peaceful and adrenaline inducing, depending on what type of circumstances you're flying under. Although, admittedly, depending on the weather it can also be extremely cold. The wind cuts your face, your hands, and if it's freezing out, it can really feel like you aren't able to hold on anymore at some point.
But aside from that, it's still an experience I would want everyone to have. The feeling of muscle underneath you, and the thrill of unexpected movements. It's different from riding a horse, where you have quite a lot of control. Although if the dragon is behaved, you can feel their movements quite well, make them change their speed or directions, and keep them under control, it's still a huge animal, that, when it wants to do something, can't really be stopped. It makes it extremely thrilling, and more like a friendship than just a tool. There's a lot of trust you put into them, and having lived in places like How to Train your Dragon, but also places like my home reality, where dragons are used more like horses, I by far prefer the bond and type of connection with the dragons in httyd.
I trust Flicker, my dragon there, with my life. He feels every small movement in my body, and I do the same with him. It's more like we're an extension of each other. I could ride him without a saddle, without anything to hold on to, because I trust his movements enough to never fall, and if I would I know he'd catch me. In comparison, I have Laö in our home reality. He's a great dragon, but like I mentioned, more like a horse (like a random horse you occasionally ride). I would not comfortably ride him without any safety, and although we have a bond, it's nothing compared to what I have with Flicker. It's also not necessary in that place, but the feeling of riding a dragon you're deeply bonded with is the most free I have ever felt. I could talk for hours about my bond and backstory with Flicker.
(I'm a yapper I'm sorry)
Honestly having a mermaid or merman tail is quite fun from my experience. I have never actually spent a long time in a place like that, more just as a little trip that the kids got to choose. But regardless it's enjoyable! I think one thing that people are never able to recreate in this reality with mermaid tails is the strength of the muscle. I often see people posing while laying on their stomach, with their legs bent to make their tail stand up. From my experience, you cannot bend it that far. It's a really powerful muscle, and quite heavy too. It's hard to describe what it feels like, but, just like any other sea mammal, it gets hard to move when you're dragging your tail (partly) out of the water, whereas in the water you can powerfully and easily get around. The way the sun and water droplets reflect on it is also really pretty to see!
Lastly, about the different styles. This reality is just the 'style' we're born into, so we see this as realistic. But anything else is just as realistic and natural. When you're in a reality that has a different style, you obviously notice the difference, but it doesn't feel weird or abnormal. I guess the easiest to describe it would be as if there's a filter over reality. But of course there are so many styles out there, like anime, or cartoon, I assume that feels the exact same!
I hope this answers your questions!💚
