When I was in fourth grade there was a group of girls in fifth grade who were notorious bullies. I broke my foot over winter break that year and came back to school on crutches. As I got better, I tried to return to my favourite sectionof the playground, only to be chased off by those girls who didn’t want to deal with me.

The next day at lunch, those girls happened to sit at a table with my older sister, an eighth grader. They started talking about the annoying girl on their part of the playground and my sister just asked: Do you mean Cora? They said yes. She told them, That’s my little sister. Leave her alone.

That day I came home and told my mom how those girls had completely left me alone and let me use the playground! I was surprised to find that they actually never bothered me again while I went to that school, even when I was being bullied by so many others!

I don’t even think my sister liked me that much at that point. Our parents got married when she was 11 and I was 8 and it took about a year for her to really embrace the idea of having a stepsister. But even before she decided that she still protected me just by telling them to stop.
