Gooood evening I heard you wanted some album recommendations for OC rambles :)

Now, to be fair, this album is a bit long (38 songs, oopsies) but it's my go-to album for when I'm driving. My mom had it on her usb stick in her car and it would play a lot when she picked me up from boarding school or drove me there, and now I'm continuing the tradition whenever I go to visit my parents :)

OK i'm finally properly getting to the album recs because my album listening process is long and systematic and makes sense to me. and i love getting music recs and wanted to take these seriously 🫡

so as we chatted i don't really do compilations for first listens because of artist intention with album and yadda yadda (+ i've been wanting to listen to manic street preachers for a while and i wanna honor the system™). so the album rec ended up being:

now onto the analysis/associations/oc writeup/commentary!

THE EVERLASTING - The Academy

as soon as it went the gap that grows between our lives i was reminded of the siblings having distanced themselves from each other... and that also brings to mind this bitter nostalgia for a better time, even though it might not even have been actually better — in the beginning / when we were winning / when our smiles were genuine.

IF YOU TOLERATE THIS YOUR CHILDREN WILL BE NEXT - Commando 105

guys it's literally about fighting fascists. who else would it be associated with. so if i can shoot rabbits, then i can shoot fascists. the entire song is about taking action and joining the fight or the future will be bleak; and if you tolerate this, then your children will be next. these guys were just normal people who enlisted to fight the nazis because they thought the same thing.

YOU STOLE THE SUN FROM MY HEART - Karan Hargreeves

fun fact this has become the favorite of the album at the moment! it was a hard one to associate, but i eventually settled on karan when i stopped seeing it as a song about romantic relationships (and then found out it's not about that anyway). to me it can represent karan's relationship with his family — but there's no / no real truce with my fury / you don't have to believe me / i love you all the same / but you stole the sun from my heart. he loves his family, has dedicated his entire childhood/teenage years to them, and that eventually destroyed his motivation.

READY FOR DROWNING - The Academy

so i've decided that their plot also involves the apocalypse like the regular umbrella academy storyline, so this song fits the general sentiment of grappling with the end of the world — so where are we going? / we're not ready for drowning. do i know how that apocalypse is happening? no. but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

TSUNAMI - Florence Hargreeves & The Academy

ok this one is not a perfect match but the more i thought about it the more i settled on florence. it's actually as much about her as it is about her siblings' feelings on her death; florence in the story is, more than herself, the shape of her absence in the others. so cries of for you, my dear sister / holding onto me forever and tied up to all these crutches / never far from your hands (very karan to florence coded i'll say) evoke the effect of her death on the family. the song might be darkly hopeful — the described tsunami washing over me is in its intention a feeling of relief — but i chose to interpret the imagery as simply something destructive that brings great change, as florence's death was to the hargreeves siblings. she was the leader to the academy and the glue to that family; her death destroyed whatever unity was there between them, and her absence haunts them still.

MY LITTLE EMPIRE - Guyta Hargreeves

not a perfect match, but i've decided on guyta; i don't think i have any character with real power as in authority or domain, but guyta's wish for control might approach it. my little empire / has risen and it's set / my little empire / is as good as it can get might be applied to her little moments of control during in academy times — specifically over ferris, something she held on to to keep that feeling. and now? i'm tired of being tired (...) i'm bored of being bored. where has her life gone? what does she have now? peace and quiet, which is something all her siblings want more than anything, but she misses the control more than she'd want to admit.

I'M NOT WORKING - Karan Hargreeves

listen. i'm not saying every song about depression is a karan song. but. he does fit the mold of typical depression the most; low self esteem, specifically tied to his academic self-worth — sweating out intelligence / like i don't know what it is —, or a sense of doom and hopelessness — i know what's coming / i'm not working.

YOU'RE TENDER AND YOU'RE TIRED - Maren Abramovich

in the last year or so (because thunderbolts* does not clarify its timeline), since the sentry project, maren has been... functioning, but not much more. you're tender and you're tired / you can't be bothered to decide / whether you live or die / or just forget about your life... to say she's tired would be an understatement.

BORN A GIRL - Karan Hargreeves

damn every song is a karan song now dude has protagonist energy. again not a perfect match but. this one was really hard to associate because of how direct it is, and i don't know if any of my characters actually fit the level of gender questioning/wondering of the song; but i eventually decided on karan especially because of how the song's lyrics at points remind me of his relationship with his own body. as in it's literally been changed and wounded, due to his powers, throughout his entire life, with dubious if any consent. so need a new start and a different time / something grows in the space between me / and it's twisting and changing this fragile body... and yeah maybe he does wish he had been born a girl / and not this mess of a man. maybe he does idealize a version in which he was born literally anything else than what he is (and maybe, just maybe, the idealized version is basically his sister flo).

BE NATURAL - Ridley Beck

FINALLY a ridley appearance in one of these i was hoping so bad for a song to remind me of her. as a true weird girl oc of mine she has a lot of problems with whatever the concept of Natural and Normal is, and her response to it is usually either cool nonchalance or utter rage. be natural / don't want any friends is her posture in the beginning of the show; keep it cool, do your thing, don't get in other people's business. and then problems add up (aka the entire plot of breaking bad lmao) and she's too deep in this shit for her best friend — been natural / for once in my life / now i'll have to swallow some pride / know that i should never give advice / but it's too late now to say goodbye. plus the descriptions of stunted/angry/not knowing what to do or what people expect you to do is some crazy ridley characterization, it's surely going into the playlist.

BLACK DOG ON MY SHOULDER - Ridley & Jesse

ridley feature times two love to see it (i miss my girl i need to rewatch breaking bad). it's no surprise that the breaking bad oc gets the dog metaphor song along with jesse pinkman dog metaphor guy himself. there's a black dog on my shoulder again represents depression, or problems that keep on weighing on you. and boy ridley and jesse have plenty. and it gets more complicated as in representing their relationship because their problems are intrinsically tied to each other and their friendship at this point. ridley gets herself in situations for jesse, which for her was unthinkable until that point — solitude the one thing that i miss / guess my life is a compromise. but she also knows how to save her own ass, as opposed to him, stuck in this abusive dynamic with walter white — am i coming back to you again / or am i stupid just by design / does it matter if you really ever know / this black dog is out of control. in a way it's also how ridley thinks about herself sometimes; when the hell did she become the person who cares and takes shit for other people? jesse pinkman is destroying himself and i keep coming back to help him? well, the answer is yes.

NOBODY LOVED YOU - Manny x Bucky

also debuting a mention of these two but they are the doomed relationship ever. two men in the front lines of world war ii living a romance already hid in its secrecy an air of tragedy; but at least they had these moments surrounded by friends, isolated from the outside world. but bucky's disappearance put an even more tragic end to their story. manny was left to deal with the grief, the memories of it — until bucky returns to himself in 2014, just after manny's death, in a cruel reversal of roles. so never had the chance to take you home / now there's no reason just another tomorrow and it's unreal that you're gone / but at least you belong and of course nobody loved you - like me.

S.Y.M.M. -

i feel like this one is about one too specific thing for me to associate to anything. like yes most of the other ones were about stories but in a more vague way, this one just doesn't take me anywhere else; but we've had a good 12 track run so far so i'm gonna call it at the last one :)

Ok see, now I need to rant, because wtf, this last chapter was heavenlyyyyy good

The communication between them was awesome, so honest and sweet, and you can feel the hesitance and love with pretty much every word and thought of theirs

Jin just keeps proving that he's a real one, an mvp if you will, I love his sense of humor, his ability to read and assure people, his dedication to gossip obvs, and overall we'll have to thank him for knocking some sense into oc, a true hero 🫡

Also the entire segment in the plane? I laughed out loud just thinking about the people near them trying to hear their conversation, like yes, the entire crew betting on them, witnessing Jk's simping tendencies, and praying on Sids downfall like the rest of us seems the only right way to react

And this part? "Someone on the plane gulped audibly and held their breath. He wondered if it was him." Like yeah no, that was me, don't mind me.

I'm ngl, the texts and threats did get me anxious for the rest of the chapter, like I kid you not, when Jk's grandma called, my mind went to the worst scenario possible involving Sid, but I was so relieved when it turned out to be one of her good days <3 so happy for jungkook btw

Another highlight? “I don’t really care how long it takes, to be honest,” he said. “I’m going to die yours.” No, stfu, these are my PARENTS, LIKE WHAT DO YOU MEAN, IM SKDDHDKSJDJ

He just keeps thinking and saying these things that make me squeal, and giggle, kick my feet and whatnot, ugh I love himmm, and with oc expressing her feelings more freely now aswell? Nah I'm not surviving this (their entire last conversation destroyed me, they're so mf cute, and yeah, they could not be just friends to save their livesss, love that for them)

But yeah, this turned out to be longer than I thought, but I just needed to get the excitement out of my system, I don't think you understand how much I adore this series, the characters and your writing, and I honestly thank you a lot for giving me these moments of happiness throughout the day

Understood! As a Narrow-Gauge Enjoyer, I will attempt to answer (with my best analysis, anyway) from a RWS-centric perspective. To preface, I'm not sure I would personally advocate for any of them having attachment issues, but I see where the argument could be made, and so I am analyzing it to the best of my ability.

(Surprising perhaps nobody, I was already working on this post before Aster tagged me in it 😄)

Before I rank them, though, I'm going to make the case for each group first (and stick it under a read-more because this got long).

Skarloey and Rheneas: This might come as a slight surprise at first, but I think it makes perfect sense. These two have been by each other's sides since they were made, with a mere few months' span between them, and have seen each other through the best of times and the worst of times. They've lived through wars, plural, together. And when Skarloey is in such terrible shape that he can only be steamed in an emergency, Rheneas pushes himself to the brink doing all of the work on the railway. There's a devotion there, born through decades upon decades of collaboration, of being the only two engines on your line.

In the text, Skarloey specifically talks about missing Rheneas very much when he's away being mended (he says this on the first page of "Skarloey Remembers"—missing him terribly, after only a day apart!) and how glad he is that Rheneas is coming home ("Passengers and Polish" shows that one). Rheneas talks about how at home he feels being in the shed next to Skarloey (and the text says that he's happiest when he's finally there). I don't think I need to go into the depth of their bond (in THIS post, anyway), but based on what we've seen, I think these two are strongly attached. Even in the show, they're often paired up to do things and in each other's episodes often, so they clearly have a propensity for sticking together that could hint at a strong enough attachment that one could call it an issue.

Sir Handel, Peter Sam, and Duke: When it comes to attachment issues specifically, I think that there's an interesting dynamic: Sir Handel and Peter Sam are both shown to be the types to HAVE strong attachments. Sir Handel LONGS for Skarloey to come back after he's sent away to be mended (there's such emphasis on him missing Skarloey at the end of "Old Faithful" that it's hard to overlook) and Peter Sam gets very upset over the idea that Duke might have been scrapped in "Duck and Dukes". Both engines also "never forgot Granpuff, and often talked about him when alone" (Granpuff).

It's clear that they both care deeply for the older engines who have positively impacted them as mentors, although they do not appear to miss each other nearly as much—after Sir Handel goes to the Tallylyn, he gets a warm welcome upon his return, but nothing suggesting that he was missed terribly much. (There's a line saying the engines were too busy to miss him, which... kind of says it all, doesn't it?) Duke also seems to have missed Sir Handel and Peter Sam, given how he interacts with them at the end of "Sleeping Beauty," but I don't necessarily think that he has attachment issues the same way, given his demeanor. If I had to guess, it's mostly because he was asleep for so long and likely didn't feel it as keenly as a result. If Duke was going to miss anybody, one would assume it to be Stanley (Smudger in the TVS), but in the books at least, he is not portrayed as really missing him and Stanley appears to be more of a cautionary tale than anything (no matter what the fanon—mine included—would like to have us believe).

Rusty, Duncan, Fred, and Ivo Hugh are not particularly shown to have attachment issues in any notable capacity (you could maybe make a case for Stepney and Rusty, but I think they're really more just friends. Their friendship does not feel like it steps into the realm of "issues") and I can't think of many/any TVS characters who seem to have such issues either, so we'll just keep them off this list.

THUS, FROM GREATEST ATTACHMENT ISSUES TO LEAST:

1. Skarloey and Rheneas (tied)

2. Sir Handel

3. Peter Sam

4. Duke

Skarloey and Rheneas, as mentioned, have been by each other's side for so long and clearly express missing each other. They also appear together a lot, almost joined at the hip. They've been through enough trauma and stress that the greatest constant in their lives is each other, and that, I think, makes them clear front-runners for possibly having attachment issues (to each other).

Sir Handel I have put above Peter Sam, because there are no less than two old engines that Sir Handel misses dearly when he's parted from, and given that my previous reading of Sir Handel is that he is an engine who highly values consistency and security, him having strong attachment issues only makes sense. That said, it's not as if he can't or doesn't want to leave the others; after all, he's been to the Tallylyn before and has been perfectly fine about it (eyepatch excluded). He also doesn't seem to miss Duke much while he's away being mended in "Patience is a Virtue".

Peter Sam does have them, of course, but it's mainly towards Duke, and when he returns, it's not a stretch to say that Peter Sam returns to his usual. He also didn't demonstrate much worry over going to the Tallylyn. Perhaps Sir Handel and Peter Sam's attachment issues have eased with time, now that they're reunited with their Granpuff and are in no danger of losing their home again.

Finally, as mentioned previously, Duke has been asleep, and while he's clearly happy to see his granchuffs again, there's definitely not the same level of anxiety or attachment issues, at least from the little that we can see.

Y/N WAKES UP nice and early with a blood sugar of 6.5 for the picnic her and her friends were planning today, including her loving boyfriend draco. y/n gets up from bed and changes into a long summer dress and heads downstairs to see draco packing all the food inside their picnic basket.

she walks up behind him and wraps her arms around his waist, kissing his cheek gently and smiling softly at the food he's packing. " morning, my angel " he turns around and kissing her on the cheek. " morning, draco. i see you're all ready for the picnic " y/n smiles softly at him, sitting on the counter of their kitchen.

draco chuckles softly and nods. " have you taken your insulin pump yet, y/n? " he asks her. " not yet cause i wanted to check on you but i was gonna do it now. " y/n sways her legs back and forth before draco lets out a content hum. " alright, my love. the drive there is about 25 minutes but since we're apparating it would be quick. "

y/n keeps that in mind and hops off the counted, walking over to their room, grabbing the insulin pump and gently sticking the needle into her stomach, she grabs a pair of biking shorts and puts the insulin pump in them to hide it, she grabs her insulin pump kit just incase and walks back to the kitchen to see draco all ready.

" ready to go, my love? " he lends his arm to her, y/n nods and takes his arm as he apparates to the park, seeing all their friends already there. they talk for about a few minutes before they start to eat, y/n remembers she took her insulin 15 minutes before so she starts to eat.

she finishes eating and decides to read a book, a few minutes pass and suddenly she feels off, her hands start to sweat, making the book almost slip off, the pages of the book becoming blurry and she feels as if everything starts spinning around, she leans onto draco as she feels weak and hot, she looks at all her friends, not wanting to worry anyone she doesn't say anything.

pansy, sitting beside y/n, notices something about her and taps draco's shoulder, draco looks at her and sees her pointing at y/n, he notices something off and puts his sandwich down, he looks over at y/n and it's become very clear, y/n's blood sugar is getting low. he immediately reaches into the basket for a bottle of juice and a few sliced apples he cut up, he packed everything y/n needed just incase this happened, everyone starts to realize what's happening and looks at y/n with worry.

draco hands y/n the juice as she lays there against draco's arm and she grabs it, drinking it slowly but surely, she grabs one of the apples and takes a bite out of it. " my love, did you take too much insulin ? " he asks seriously, a hint of worry laced in his voice. " y- yeah.." she says, looking down in ignomy, not daring to look into her boyfriends icy grey eyes.

he cups her cheeks into his slender pale hands, one of them ring-clad and staring into y/n's eyes. " y/n, listen to me. i love and care for you so damn much, i know you must've been scared to tell me but i wouldn't care. the whole damn world could be burning but i would worry for you and only you, my love. my beautiful love. " y/n smiles softly, still eating the apples and the juice her boyfriend gave her.

" i love you. " y/n says softly. " i love you more. now, just drink your juice and eat your apples. after that we'll check how y'feelin after 15 minutes, alright? " draco kisses y/n's head after she nods.
