Il sistema Wero di pagamento Europeo

Cos’è Wero, la risposta europea a Visa e MasterCard. Alcune grandi banche europee, come Bnp Paribas e Deutsche Bank, stanno partecipando allo sviluppo di un sistema di pagamento che ambisce a rivaleggiare con i colossi statunitensi Visa e MasterCard. Tutti i dettagli sul progetto Wero. Alcune delle banche più grandi dell’Unione europea, come la francese Bnp Paribas e la tedesca Deutsche Bank, hanno sviluppato un nuovo sistema di pagamento con l’obiettivo di fornire un’alternativa a Visa e MasterCard, le due società statunitensi che dominano il mercato delle carte di credito e di debito. Il progetto si chiama Wero, è sostenuto da una decina banche e società di servizi di pagamento – l’italiana Nexi e la francese Wordline, ad esempio – e sta venendo implementato in gran parte dell’Europa occidentale, spiega Bloomberg. Cosa fa Wero Wero – poniamo – permette a un utente tedesco di pagare il conto di un albergo in Francia utilizzando direttamente il proprio conto bancario, senza passare per una carta Visa o MasterCard. Se il sistema dovesse diffondersi, le due società potrebbero veder svanire almeno una parte delle rendite miliardarie derivate dalle commissioni che applicano ai commercianti europei. Le banche coinvolte nel progetto Tra i sostenitori di Wero, oltre a Bnp Paribas, Nexi, Deutsche Bank e Wordline, ci sono anche Crédit Agricole (francese), Société générale (francese), Rabobank (olandese), Ing (olandese) e Kbc (belga). È troppo presto, tuttavia, per considerare Wero un concorrente di Visa e MasterCard o anche dei numerosi sistemi di pagamento digitali. Ma il progetto ha anche un obiettivo politico: come ha spiegato Martina Weimert, l’amministratrice delegata di European Payments Initiative, la società dietro Wero, il sistema punta a costruire una “alternativa alle soluzioni internazionali in modo da offrire una scelta europea agli utenti e ai consumatori europei”. Ad oggi, infatti, l’Unione europea dipende da Visa e MasterCard – due società straniere, per quanto abbiano sede in un paese alleato – per la fornitura di servizi cruciali come quelli finanziari. La Banca centrale europea è consapevole di non avere abbastanza sovranità sui propri sistemi di pagamento. A spaventare le autorità dell’Unione, scrive Bloomberg, è stata la decisione di Visa e MasterCard di sospendere le loro operazioni in Russia dopo l’invasione dell’Ucraina, impendendo ai russi detentori di carte di utilizzarle all’estero e rendendo impossibili le transazioni estere nel paese. I servizi di Wero saranno disponibili sia attraverso l’app che tramite le piattaforme di pagamento delle banche aderenti come Paylib, il servizio di Bnp Paribas che conta oltre 35 milioni di utenti e verrà integrato in Wero. “I pagamenti sono una questione di volumi. Se non ha i volumi, non hai la capacità di essere competitivo” sull’esperienza utente, ha detto a Bloomberg Carlo Bovero, responsabile della divisione carte e pagamenti innovativi di Bnp Paribas. L’anno scorso Visa e MasterCard hanno gestito transazioni rispettivamente per 14.800 e 9000 miliardi di dollari. I precedenti L’Unione europea ha già provato in passato a prendersi degli spazi nel settore dei pagamenti, ma senza successo: il progetto Monnet, che puntava alla creazione di un marchio europeo di carte di credito, è stato chiuso per i disaccordi sul modello di business da adottare. La sua eredità è stata raccolta nel 2020 da European Payments Initiative, che tuttavia ha dovuto ridimensionare le ambizioni dopo l’uscita delle banche spagnole dall’iniziativa; si è deciso così di concentrarsi, almeno inizialmente, su un sistema di pagamento account-to-account in quanto più economico e di più semplice integrazione per le banche.
