Acrimony: Tumuli Shroomaroom (1997)

“Only three Whalephants remain in the Universe. They swim in the Deepest Temples of Space. They await the day when all knowers of the Stone are reunited and they will swim the Stella Tides of Earth and lead us all Home to Wode.  That blue star, far away.”

Acrimony’s sophomore swan song, Tumuli Shroomaroom, is easily a Top Ten stoner rock album of all time and, indeed … beyond time. 

Yes, it owes a great deal to Kyuss, and 1992’s epochal Blues for the Red Sun, in particular, but Shroomaroom not only validates the notion that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but extends and expands’ those legendary desert rockers’ groundbreaking efforts past horizons Kyuss never lived to see.

Everything one could ask for that was great and thrilling about ‘90s stoner rock is here: the sludgy riffs, groovy licks, and metallic kicks, the acid trips, psychedelic drips, and deep space rock excursions – all generously allotted to nine fantastic songs and, you bet I’m gonna tell you about them …

While lysergic travelogues such as “Vy,” “Find the Path,” and “The Bud Song” bang out pointed, bruising riffs amid bubbling sound effects, the beautifully stark “Turn the Page” sets its acoustic weapons to “stun mode” via delicate, interweaving lines.

While colossal, Earth-threatening asteroids like “Hymns to the Stone,” “Heavy Feather” and “Firedance” flame across the stratosphere for ten-plus minutes each, the anthemic, pummeling “Million Year Summer” condenses the purest stoner ingredients into just five.

But the album’s main event – for me anyway – is the positively thunderous, hilariously emphatic “Motherslug (The Mother of all Slugs)” -- a song so good they SLUGGED it twice -- and a raging, rolling, roiling, tribal ritual of intergalactic worship, culminating in glorious, power chord shock waves.

No song better epitomizes the mind-expanding, dimension-bending and now decade-spanning influence of Tumuli Shroomaroom, for which recognition continues to grow, as it does for its gone-too-soon visionaries in Acrimony: the grand shamans of British stoner rock.

Tiger Mask W (Last: 2): Naoto was unmasked by The Third and generally wrecked, but Takuma was spurred to his feet by dad. Takuma unleashed his new finishing move on both The Second and The Third, burying them to claim the tag match for NJPW.

Atom: The Beginning (Last: 5): A106 burned through an expensive part and also broke a borrowed spare while winning the semifinal. However, Dr. Lolo wanted to fight them at their best and gifted them a replacement.

Yowamushi Pedal: Next Generation (Last: 3): Onoda's climb to the front was aided by the respectful pack, although he had to turn down a free ride on the Midosuji Line. He's 4 1/2 minutes behind Teshima... can he catch up?

Re:Creators (Last: 1): After being told to "get in the damn robot" by budget Shinji Ikari, Sota was out of excuses to continue hiding what he knew about Altair's creator. Thus began a sad story of internet jealousy.

Attack on Titan (Last: 4): Eren couldn't transform into a Titan, but he was able to control them, buying the survivors time to escape. Armin and Jean hypothesized his ability, which was basically confirmed by Reiner.

Berserk (Last: 6): The gang's plan to relax in a beachfront cabin was rudely interrupted by spear-wielding alligators and some kinda whalephant which caused Guts to lose control. The fairy king is apparently a big deal.

Kamen Rider Ex-Aid (Last: 8): The revived Lazer delivered a soul-crushing "reason you suck" speech that caused Emu to snap and renounce their friendship with the now-standard beach brawl. Hiiro may or may not regret changing sides.

Kabukibu! (Last: 7): Everything was going smoothly for the Five Bandits, including fight choreography with the gymnastics club. So of course Riri got sick and forced them to either go with four... or recruit Ebihara.
