The Metaverse: Part 3
The past few years have involved many changes in journalism as a result of the metaverse and attempts to cover it and the social changes that result from it. Firstly, experts believe that journalists may begin to conduct interviews while physically present in the metaverse instead of doing zoom, phone, or real-life interviews. This was seen in the 2022 Olympic where journalists interviewed athletes in a virtual studio. This was also seen in sports journalism in Eurosport where a self-described digital virtual “cube” was utilized to interview athletes and celebrities in a life-like digital studio, as explained in a Reuters 2022 article. This will enable jounalists to be able to interview people who are otherwise inaccessible or hard to be in person with, whether it be because of conflicting schedules, travel issues, security risks, etc. This will allow the public to get more diverse interviews (China Daily, 2022). There are also computer programmers who predict that a new invention known as “7G Journalism” will evolve, which will be media and news stories that are transmitted directly into people’s brain through micro chips. This would enable the media to transmit news content 24/7 to humans from satellites directly into microchips implanted in their brains. This could potentially then solve the issue of some communities having lack of access to the internet or metaverse advancements if they have chips inside of them that give them the latest news, as depicted in a 2022 China News Daily article. Journalism can also continue to utilize NFT’s as they have been used to create financial profits for newspapers and magazines. For example, The New York Times sold an article as an NFT for $800,000 and journalists can continue to use NFT’s in the metaverse to protect from copyright infringement and create financial revenue for struggling newspapers and magazines and to attract new users (Reuters, 2022). By supporting newspapers and magazines the metaverse contributes to more distrubition of news to a larger audience, which can further reduce inequities in knowledge about the metaverse. Finally, the metaverse will significantly alter the way that content creation is related to journalism. Many journalistic outlets and news agencies are using social media apps like Meta, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok to share news with a larger audience.
The metaverse will change the face of social media and thus content creation, thus transforming the way that journalists will utilize these outlets to create news content. AR and VR as significant components of the metaverse will enable journalists to make news content that is more interactive and engrossing for users. Users may be able to feel virtually present in an interview with a celebrity or politician, feel that they are physically present in different parts of the world and different events shown on the news, and they may be able to participate in chat rooms following news content that resemble real-life interactions. Changes such as this have already begun with social media apps such as by Meta creating their new app called “Polar”, which allows creators to create AR effects and filters onto their social media content. Journalists can use this feature to make the news more interactive for viewers. The metaverse will also increase public access to AI tools such as video editing, animation, and music created through AI. Journalists can then use these AI created features to make more immersive news stories that leave a lasting impression for viewers. Other apps being released like “Presence Platform” and “Promethean Ai'' likewise allow creators such as journalists to create mixed-reality video content and build virtual worlds to better educate and inform viewers. Journalists can even use these platforms to take their viewers through tours of virtual replicas of events or places in the news from far off countries. All of these metaverse related advancements can enable journalists to ironically better explain and better educate the public on the metaverse as explained by expert F. Fatemi in Forbes magazine. These advancements can also be utilized to create news and media that promotes positive social changes such as equality. Thus, these innovations give journalism more tools to play a role in making the world more equal and people more humane.
The arrival of the metaverse is introducing the world to new frontiers in the possibilities that technology can afford us. The developers of the metaverse are attempting to create a world that is as complex and nuanced as the real physical world, and it will have as much or even more ramifications than the Internet has had on social change. The metaverse will trigger large amounts of social change involving varied facets including economic distribution through metaverse financial opportunities, cyber crimes, and physical and mental health. For this reason it is imperative that journalists serve as the main educators of the public concerning the metaverse and spread awareness of it. Only by doing this can journalism prevent the metaverse from creating larger societal inequalities. Journalism is already beginning to use the metaverse and its associated facets to improve the field of journalism, and by continuing to utilize these new technological features it can continue to make a difference in people's lives. By impacting the public's digital lives they can massively improve the public's real physical life, and this is why it is so imperative for journalism to remain on the pulse of the rapidly changing world of the metaverse.
