All The Things (I Never Wrote)
Umbrella Academy
Diego Hargreeves/Vanya Hargreeves
Summary: She can hear the distinct clicking of the knife in his hand as it moves from side to side, between his fingers, precise and deadly.
Diego.
He had not lost the talent of being able to catch her by surprise.
Vanya enters her old room cautiously. She hadn’t set foot in there in so long it no longer feels like her own. Moving to her old window, pulling away the curtains to look out at the grounds. Feeling an odd sense of deja vu reminded of the times she would longingly look down at the other members of the Academy training, laughing at times to the utter dismay of their father, but together. While she could only imagine what it might be like to feel a part of something.

They would tell her how lucky she was that she was not forced to undergo the training regime that they were subjected to. Five was the only one who understood, would shoot her a sympathetic look whenever they left for another mission and she would remain at home. An ally in a lonely house until he disappeared leaving her alone.

“You left out some parts,” the voice takes her by surprise from the chair in the corner of her room, cast in the shadows, the sun streaming through the window unable to reach it. She swallows deeply, instead of on the figure in the corner of her room, on the sheet music still laid out on her desk. But she can feel his eyes practically boring into the back of her head.

She can hear the distinct clicking of the knife in his hand as it moves from side to side, between his fingers, precise and deadly.

Diego.

He had not lost the talent of being able to catch her by surprise.

She maintains her focus on the pile of papers, fingers moving over the paper, the softness beneath her fingertips, bringing back old memories she had tried to forget.

It was why she had written that book, hopeful that once she allowed those memories, her thoughts, to be committed to paper that she might be able to start to move on. To become her own person instead of living in the shadows of those around her.

“You read it?” she asks, catching his movement in the reflection of her vanity mirror as he shifts in the chair.

“The bits I could manage,” he replies, replacing the knife back into the harness across his chest. “A bit long and self-indulgent for my tates.”

She scoffs at the insult, he never did miss an opportunity to call her out.

“Well I didn’t write it for you,” she turns to face him, leaning back on the edge of her desk for support as she does so, “for any of you,” she clarifies.

He considers her answer giving a slow nod as he rises to his feet, moving across the room, and she is thankful that with the intensity in his eyes the knife is no longer in his hand. Her eyes flick towards the bedroom door, pondering whether to hold her ground or run away again.

“Didn’t stop you telling the whole world about us though did it?” The guilt feels heavy in her stomach.

“I wasn’t going to,” she admitted, casting her eyes down. She had looked at those typed pages in the weeks that followed pressing the final key. Whether now they were out if she needed to go further by sharing the story of her life with the rest of the world.

“It wasn’t about exposing you, or any of the others.” She had been angry, sad, confused when writing the memoir, but she didn’t place any blame on them, they were all just children. “It was about exposing him. The kind of man that he was. What he did to us.”

“Did it make you feel any better?”

“No.”

After it was published and she had done the obligatory rounds with it, and it was discounted in bookstores beyond the ridiculous, she had merely returned to her previous life. There was no grand retribution, she didn’t find herself in between the pages of her own book. She just moved onto someone else’s shadow and perhaps that was where she would always remain.
When she looks up he is standing right in front of her.
His hands move to either side of her resting on her old desk. He is closer than he should be. She resists the urge to reach out and touch the scar that runs along his temple, wanting to know who had left it there.

They were still teenagers the last time they were this close. She was as just as nervous then, her heart pounding in her chest as his hand had moved over hers, his thumb brushing over her knuckles, a touch that was surprisingly tender for him.

He had leaned forward to press his lips against hers. A sharp intake of breath and he pulled away, worry in his eyes that he had overstepped before she rose to her toes and returned the kiss feeling his lips curve in a smile against her lips.

The rest had been a series of late-night meetups, hushed whispers in corridors and hurried fumbles in the Academy's many, many hidden corridors.

But in the end Diego had always wanted to be a hero. To prove himself to a man who couldn't care less. And he had left to do just that, left her. Alone again.

He considers her carefully, as if he is not sure what to do, caught in the moment like she is. Before his face hardens again, forehead creasing.

“Good,” he pushes away from her, making his way to the doorway. The moment slipping past her again.

She hasn’t spoken to him, not really, in years and she feels the urge overtake her to ask him if she doesn’t now she doesn’t think she ever will.

“Those things I left out,” she speaks up, and he stops in his tracks, looking back over his shoulder at her. “Do you regret them?”

He pauses, his hand resting on the door frame,  a sadness falling over his face, “No.”
“Me neither.” Those moments however fleeting had been too special, too precious to share with the rest of the world.
Thank you for reading, also if you have any further suggestions or prompts I would love to write more for this pairing.

Prompt #51
Prompt: Climbing Into Trees And Sitting Up There Together As They Talk About Random Things
Vanya had to admit, watching the sunrise after late night patrols with Diego, snuggled together between tree branches, wasn’t half bad. And it was the only time they actually got time together alone; now that Klaus had accidentally outed their relationship to their siblings.
Their father had also learned about their relationship, but rather than try to force apart two of his most rebellious children, he simply told them to keep it out of his sight. Which was a bit difficult with cameras and other various recording devices spread throughout the house. But they managed.
And since they’d found that the easiest way to get time alone together was to be on patrol, and their father assigned more patrols when they’d misbehave, so Diego and Vanya we’re taking the fall for just about anything and everything they believable could.
Needless to say, Diego and Vanya had patrol together roughly three or four nights a week at least. With the exception of nights after missions.
Most of the time, when it wasn’t freezing outside, the two would find games or random things to talk, or mock, about. There were many games of i spy, hide and seek, tag, never have I ever, etc. Any game they’d never been allowed to play, or at least ever played together, would have many rounds and variations until they became bored with it and moved onto the next.
Their patrols would typically start shortly after they’d been dismissed by their father from dinner and would end just before they were expected to arrive at breakfast with the rest of their siblings and their father. Their father would randomly check in, trying to make sure they were doing what they’d been assigned to do from after dinner until half an hour after sunset, leaving them to their own devices for the rest of the evening.
And on the nights that the freezing air would seem to bite at their skin more than they were comfortable and were less willing to at least pretend or half-heartedly patrol, they’d skip all their games, ignoring all contact from their father, and just sit, snuggled together, in one of their favorite trees. Testing how far they’d get from the house before the cold had gotten to be too much.
There was one night in particular that was definitely among Vanya’s favorites.
It was in the middle of summer. On this particular night, there was a surprising lack of light pollution, enough so that they could see nearly triple the amount of stars in the sky than they normally could. It may have been due to the citywide power outage. The power grid or something, details, had overheated in the record high heat and hadn’t been fixed in hours. Apparently they needed some new part to fix it and it was about a five hour drive from the nearest city that had the right part.
The city had been lulled into near silence almost two hours earlier than it normally did; bars, restaurants, and all other businesses were all closed due to the lack of power. And as the almost silence settled around them and, despite the heat, Diego and Vanya we’re sitting close together on a tree branch.
That night they had been talking about starting their band again, or at least Vanya was. “We should start our band again.” Vanya said, watching the twinkling stars as she felt Diego shift next to her.
Diego, quite literally, popped up from where he’d been sitting in either shock or surprise, Vanya couldn’t tell, and as he turned to fully look at Vanya he asked, “What do you mean?”
Vanya, now also sitting up, said, “I just thought that when we had our band the first time, it was fun. And an escape, for both of us.” Vanya felt the heat of the blush as it spread across her cheeks as she continued, sliding a little closer to him, “And besides, it would give us some more alone time, outside of the house and patrol.”
Once again, Diego pulled away a bit, although this time, rather than looking either surprised or shocked he looked unsure, prompting Vanya to ask, “What’s wrong D?”
“Nothing’s wrong.” Diego quickly said, “It’s just…”
“Just what?” Vanya asked, “You know you can tell me anything.”
If it wasn’t for the near silence and Vanya’s enhanced hearing, she probably wouldn’t’ve heard Diego mutter, “I’m not sure if the band is something I want to do again.”
Oh. Okay.
From the look Diego was giving her, he was probably expecting her to take him not wanting to reform their band poorly. But she didn’t. And to be honest, Vanya herself was a little surprised at her almost lack of a reaction. “Are you, you know, okay?” Diego asked her.
“Yeah. Of course.” Vanya quickly replied, “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“It’s just, you seemed, I don’t know, excited about starting the band again.” Vanya couldn’t figure out where Diego was going with this as he continued, “And when I told you that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it again, you just, didn’t react.” Oh, right. “I’m just trying to make sure you’re alright.”
“Oh, thanks.” Vanya said, “Maybe we can-”
“Number Two. Number Seven.” Reginald’s voice screeched from their communicators, “Report back to the house immediately.”
Diego and Vanya shared a look, skeptical as to why he’d call them back to the house; because if it were for a mission he would’ve told them it was a mission. Begrudgingly, Diego pulled his communicator off his belt and asked their father, “What for?”
“I will have none of your frivolous questioning Number Two.” Their father bit back, they could practically hear the anger in his voice, probably with a glare on his face to match, “Number Two, you and Number Seven are to return to the house immediately.”
Once they were sure they’d be getting no more orders from their father, Diego and Vanya pulled themselves from the tree branch and started making their way back home. As they walked, Vanya asked Diego “Who do you think got in trouble?”
“Probably Klaus.”
“Yeah.”

The second Vanya walked in the door Diego could tell she was sick and now he's just trying to make her feel better. Not exactly how he imagined spending his evening, but what can you do for the ones you love? But of course, Klaus and Ben make a much (un)needed appearance.

Prompt #34
Prompt: Pressing Foreheads Together While Kissing For The First Time
If you had told thirteen year old Vanya that in fifteen years she’d be kissing a twenty-eight year old Diego, she’d have told you, that you are insane.
However, twenty-eight year old Vanya would disagree.
They both knew they shouldn’t. But they did anyway. Multiple times.
They still knew it was wrong. It should have been wrong.
The first time they kissed Diego’s side was bleeding and Vanya’s eyes were red and puffy with dried tear tracks still slightly visible.
Diego had been grazed by a bullet from his stupid patrol earlier in the evening.
Vanya’s, now ex-girlfriend, had broken up with her and was moving across the country in the next week.
He had climbed up her fire escape and knocked on her window while she was crying on her couch. He scared the shit out of her. She scared the shit out of him. For different reasons, obviously.
She dropped her blanket on the floor, leaving the tv running while she rushed to the window. Quickly prying it open she helped him into her kitchen. “What happened?”
His eyes flickered from her to her set up in the living room and then back to her. “Could ask you the same question.” His hand covering his side, blood licking his fingers.
Her eyes shifted towards where his hand was clutching his side. “How bad is it?” she was already moving to get her first aid kit from the bathroom.
“Not too bad.”
“What happened?” As she was returning from the bathroom, he pulled one of her kitchen table’s chairs over towards the window and waited.
She carefully pried his hand from his side, some of his blood spreading onto her hands. She didn’t care. It unnerved him every time. “I got shot at.”
She handed him a cloth that she’d grabbed in the bathroom, he firmly pressed it against his side. “And what’d you do to them?”
“What they deserved.”
“Of course.” She pulled the cloth from his hand after she’d opened the rubbing alcohol.
She soaked a section of a second cloth that she’d brought from her bathroom. “This is going to sting.” This was always his least favorite part, she always looked so apologetic when she gave him the same warning every time.
He nodded and braced himself for the imminent stinging.
It wasn’t the worst injury he’s had, or even the worst he’s come to her with, but by no means was it one of the smaller injuries he’s come to her with. Those nights he just didn’t want to be alone.
As she packed everything back into her first aid kit, he could see tears in the corners of her eyes. “Are you okay?”
She turned fully toward him. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” She was giving him a very practiced puzzled look. And he hated.
“You’re crying.” He watched her freeze, they’ve never talked about their personal lives during these little excursions, much less the emotions that they were both shit at expressing. She was always indifferent. He is always angry.
Diego grabbed one of her hands and pulled her towards him. “What happened V?”
“Nothing.”
“Bullshit.”
She managed to look at him for half a second before her eyes dropped to the floor. “Teagan and I broke up.” Oh. Shit.
“Are you okay?”
“I will.”
He lead them over to her couch, her gaze still on their feet and floor. He glanced at her tv, only to see some stupid romantic movie playing.
As much as he sucks at giving physical affection, he’s spent enough time with Klaus and Vanya, mostly Klaus, that he knows what they both preferred. He grabbed her other hand and gingerly touched his forehead to hers. Like he expected she almost immediately leaned into him, soaking up the given affection. There was a sudden warmth on his lips, and as soon as it was there, it was gone.
“I’m sorry I shouldn’t have done that.” He kissed her again. And again. And again.
They still knew it was wrong. It should have been wrong.
But it never felt like it was. So it wasn’t. And it never was.

Prompt #31
Prompt: I Got Scared At The Pitch-Black Haunted House And Accidently Grabbed Your Hand, Thinking It Was My Friend’s
Diego was never going to listen to Klaus again. Diego was never going to let Klaus convince him to do this shit again. More so, Diego was never going into a haunted house again.
Klaus has been trying to get Diego a girlfriend for the past two months. Setting him up on various blind dates. He even tried some double dates with him and Dave, but there was rarely a second date and never a third.
This time Klaus had tried to set up a group date between Diego and one of Dave’s friends Delores and this douchebag that was one of Klaus’s friends who went by ‘Five’ and some girl who looked like she was four years younger than the rest of them, Vanya.
Admittedly, Diego thought that Vanya was a lot cuter than Delores was. Maybe it was from Five flirting with both Vanya and Delores all night, which just annoyed him to no end. Or from Vanya profusely apologizing everytime she did something, which didn’t annoy him but just made him want to protect her. From who or what exactly Diego didn’t know, but that didn’t seem to matter.
Just as Diego was getting ready to call this ‘date’ of his to an end, getting himself out of another one of Klaus’s horrible ideas, leaving Five and Delores to their disgusting flirting, and letting Vanya out of this situation that she’s obviously uncomfortable with, meanwhile Klaus was too busy trying to make-out with his husband to notice Diego and Vanya’s discomfort. Klaus told them that they were heading to some haunted house bullshit.
For some stupid reason, Klaus seems to have always adored going to haunted houses, despite the fact that he is the biggest scaredy cat Diego has ever met. Despite Klaus’s claims, Diego is fairly certain Klaus only drags Dave around to these stupid haunted houses is so he can hold Dave’s hand when he gets scared. Which is cute, but it would be cuter if Diego didn’t get dragged along with Dave and Klaus. Diego ended up riding in Dave’s car with him and Klaus while Five followed behind them with Delores and Vanya. Klaus wouldn’t tell them where they were going, other than that it was to a haunted house.
The first part of the ride was oddly silent, especially with Klaus. None of them said anything other that Klaus giving Dave minimal directions to their next location.
The second part of the ride wasn’t nearly as silent as the first, especially since Klaus just put the directions onto Dave’s phone, letting the phone navigate the rest of their drive, and Klaus turned to face him, the unfortunately familiar smirk grazed Klaus’s face before he began to pester Diego about his date. “So, what do you think about Delores?” Wait what?
“Delores?”
“Yeah Delores, what do you think about her?” I don’t really know Klaus, haven’t talked to her much between Five’s flirting. “Do you like her?” Maybe, I don’t know. “You think you’ll go on another date?” We’d have to go on a first one dude. “Dave and I won’t go, -” Thank god for that. “-it won’t be as fun but still. So what do you think D?”
“Klaus, dear, leave him alone.” If there had been any reason for Diego to love and appreciate Dave, it would be for the numerous times he could get Klaus to, albeit temporarily, back off in his pestering. “First off, he can’t answer your question if you keep asking him a hundred more. Second of all, Diego probably needs to spend more time with his date before thinking about making any long term plans.”
After an annoyed huff from Klaus the rest of their ride was spent in blissful silence, barring the occasional direction streaming out of the phone’s speaker.
By the time that they finally got to the stupid haunted house, Klaus was practically bouncing off the walls of the car. It’s safe to say that Klaus hopped out of the car before Dave had time to properly park the car. “Klaus!” And Dave chastised him, apparently not for the first time about Klaus literally jumping out of the car.
As Diego was trying to hide his enjoyment of Dave chewing out Klaus’s dumbass, again, “How long have you known Klaus?” Somehow, Vanya had managed to sneak up on him and was now glancing back and forth from him and her shoes.
Keeping his eyes on Klaus doing his weird flirting shit with Dave, Diego replied, “Too long. Why do you care?”
“He talks about you alot.”
“What?”
“Klaus, he talks about you to me all the time.”
Pulling his eyes from Klaus disgustingly kissing Dave, settling on Vanya who was still looking at the ground, no longer glancing back at him. He thought about saying something back. ‘Whatever he said he’s lying’ ‘I don’t care’ ‘What did he say?’ Something along those lines, instead he walked over to Klaus and Dave, pulling Klaus away from Dave by the collar of his shirt and dragging him towards the stupid haunted house.
Sneaking a quick glance over his shoulder as he pulled Klaus along, he could see Dave following close behind, Vanya a bit after that, and Five and Delores were nowhere to be seen. Looking a bit more Diego could see that Five’s car was currently leaving the field it had been previously parked in. “Klaus.”
“Yes Diego dearest?”
“The other two are gone.”
“Five and Vanya?” Why was he friends with Klaus again?
“No. Five and Delores. Vanya is behind you dumbass.”
“Oh. Didn’t see that happening. So what do you think of Vanya?” Diego hit Klaus in the back of the head for that. Sneaking another glance at the remaining other two, Dave and Vanya looked to be talking, both having somewhat shy smiles, kind of like they’ve known each other for a long time.
“Is Vanya your friend or Dave’s?”
“Vanya is my baby sister.” Um what?
Diego had let go of Klaus’s shirt at this point. As Diego was processing why the hell would Klaus go on a double or group date with his little sister. Or why neither of them ever mentioned that Klaus had a sister. Or why Vanya hadn’t told him Klaus was her brother. Or why there is a ticket waving in front of his face. “D? You good?”
“I’m fine Klaus,” pushing Klaus’s waving out of his face, Diego took the ticket Klaus had been offering him. “Why didn’t you tell me that you had a sister? Or that Vanya was your sister?”
Klaus got a stupid smirk on his face, reaching a bit behind him and pulling someone over. Unsurprisingly it was Vanya. “My dear baby sister Vanya, why didn’t you tell our beloved Diego that we are siblings?”
Wriggling out his grasp Vanya turned mostly towards Klaus, while keeping an eye on Diego. “First, stop calling me your baby sister. I’m literally four minutes younger than you.” Wait, what. Not only were they siblings, but they’re twins? “Second, you literally told me not to say anything about us being related.” Of course he did. “And third, I didn’t even want to come. But you made me anyway.” Um, what?
“Why didn’t you want to come?” The question slipped out before Diego had realized he’d even wanted to know.
Dave stepped in between Klaus and Vanya, clearly used to them fighting or arguing or whatever they were doing, “Klaus loves haunted houses. Vanya hates them.” Oh.
Instead of elaborating any further, Klaus simply began leading their group into the haunted house. Diego could see Dave was lightly pulling Vanya with them, her reluctance to go into the building evident on her face.
Once they got into the haunted house and there hadn’t been any scares yet, Dave had drifted from Vanya to Klaus. But as soon as the first monster of some kind, it was a really bad vampire, Diego felt little fingers grasping for his. He didn’t have to look to know it was Vanya.
Regardless he looked anyway. “You scared?” Klaus had led Dave further up ahead of them, enough that Diego couldn’t see them anymore.
“Shut up.”
“You want to leave.”
“Yes please.”

Prompt #29
Prompt: Does That Line Ever Work For Ya?
D: What's a smart, attractive man like myself doing without your phone number?
Vanya had to keep herself from rolling her eyes. This guy, Diego Perez, would send her a really cheesy, stupid, obnoxious pick-up line every day.
If she was being completely honest, she looked forward to getting the awful pick-up lines every day. And she would never tell him this, but they did brighten her otherwise monotonous office work as some pompous asshole's assistant.
Stealing a quick glance into the windows of her boss's office, Vanya quickly typed a short reply to Mr. Perez.
V: Does that line ever work for ya?
She put her phone on her desk and pretended to peruse her emails, awaiting his reply. The quick ding pulled her back to her phone.
D: Every time V
Willing herself yet again to not roll her eyes.
V: Almost every time D. Nice try
Her boss's office door clicked open as she quickly dropped her phone back on her desk. "Ms. Petrov, could you assist me with something for a moment?" Shit, what now?
Vanya pushed herself out of her chair, standing for the absolute wreck of her boss, "Of course Mr. Johnson."
The two walked back into his office, and while she was reprimanded by her boss for using work time as personal time, whatever, all she was thinking about was D.
And when she returned to her desk there was another message awaiting her.
D: Mezzo's? @8?
Vanya didn't even attempt to hide her grin.
V: See you there

Prompt #25
Prompt: Hey! Jealousy Is When You Want Something You Don’t Have. I’m Being Territorial And That’s Protecting Something You Already Have!
If that disgusting blond rat didn’t get off of her in the next 5 seconds Diego was going to- “You really should be so jealous.” Of course it was Five. All of his other siblings have their own lives, even Klaus being sober and Ben being alive this time. But since Five is mentally 70-something but physically 25 like the rest of them, he still acts like he knows so much more than them.
“I’m not jealous.”
Five is one of the few people that would ever have the audacity to laugh, in disbelief as well, at him. “It’s not me that you need to convince.” And just like that, Five popped from being next to Diego to standing in front of Vanya and Blondie.
If there was one thing Diego hated, it would be that Five was right. Well first it would be Reginald, then it would be that Five was right. That little bastard is always right isn’t he?
But he isn’t jealous.
He wasn’t.
Maybe he is.
“D?” Fuck. Vanya. “Are you okay?” Of course he’s okay. Totally not jealous of that little rat, who was now scampering away, had laid himself all over her. He had one arm around her calm down. All he could muster was a nod since he currently couldn’t trust his voice.
They silently started walking back to their apartment, Diego couldn’t help himself but stew in his own thoughts about Blondie. Before he knew it they were already back to their apartment, which was only six blocks away from the theatre, but it had never felt like such a short walk before. “Diego!” Vanya was standing at the front door if their building, the door propped open, clearly waiting for him to get his head out of his ass and go inside.
He gave her a quick “Sorry.” as he hurried past her and into the building.
She met him at the stairwell. He always took the stairs. She would usually, almost always, join him. Their trek up the two flights of stairs to their floor wasn’t as quiet as the walk back to the building. “Are you sure you’re okay? It seems like something has been bothering you since we left the theatre.” She could always see right through him.
It makes sense, she’s one of the only people who can understand Five’s bullshit anyway. Wait, where is Five? “Where’d Five go?”
“He said he had ‘business to attend to’ and jumped.” Vanya pushed open the door from the stairwell into the hallway, he followed her back to their apartment halfway down the hall from the stairs. “You haven’t answered my question you know.”
Right. “Its nothing.” Bullshit. And based on the look on Vanya’s face, she didn’t believe him either.
She pushed the door of their apartment open, “You know Detective Hargreeves, you’re a pretty shit liar.”
Looking at the smirk on her face will never let him fight off getting a smirk of his own, “Touché, Mrs. Hargreeves.”
