ENTRY 2

This week for class my first poem is due. The topic is “Why I [blank]” with the first word of each line being the same for the whole poem. The example poem from Major Jackson is “Why I write poetry” with each line starting with “Because”. I am currently brainstorming possibilities for my poem after we have been given leading statements for 9 out of a minimum of 15 lines for the poem. During class we discussed how when reading poetry not to assume that the poet is the speaker. This allows for the poet to write about topics that they may not have experienced, or use them as a metaphorical piece to portray a different experience or feeling. This can be useful when I am formulating my poem to help connect the different experiences I have had or want to explore with the overall theme of the poem of why I “do something”. Creative writing isn’t the easiest topic for me to write about, but having these tools in mind with a starting off point has helped me formulate some techniques I want to include in my poem. The book, “The Poet’s Companion”, that I am reading for class has also helped with thinking about how poets write and what kinds of methods they use to display their messages in their writing.
